STELLA WORlD’s FIRST SOLAR POWERED FAMILY CAR
INTRODUCTION Imagine a solar car that drives your whole family, a car that is so intuitive that everything is immediately obvious. Imagine a car that is free to drive. Cars have not changed much in the past 50 years. Most of them still run on petrol, pollute, cost a fortune to refuel and have dozens of confusing buttons and switches that require your attention. We are Solar Team Eindhoven: A team of young people that was confronted with these frustrations on cars, but we are even more inspired by the endless possibilities that a car provides. The greatest possibilities appeared to us when we considered the car as a machine that does not only bring you from home to work, but gives you freedom and joy. With Stella it is now possible to enjoy driving without being held back by emissions and high fuel costs. We want to show the world what the car of the future looks like. We believe the future is not just about improving cars, electric cars or solar cars. We believe the future is about improving the way you feel when driving a car. It is about joy without polluting, it is about freedom with your whole family and it is about safety through intuitive control. Meet Stella: She is the world’s first family car powered by solar energy. She won the Cruiser Class of the 2013 World Solar Challenge. We tried to fit everything that is special about her in one document. Kind regards, Lex Hoefsloot Team Manager Solar Team Eindhoven

User-car interaction We thought of Stella as an opportunity to change the perspective on electric cars and driving in general. There were several frustrations we targeted with a fresh view on user-car interaction: growing amount of buttons, safety and the user experience of an electric car.
INTEGRATED TURN INDICATOR The turning light indicators are activated by squeezing the steering wheel. The wheel is aware of the steering angle. Squeeze the part of the wheel that is at the side of your intended direction, no matter what the steering wheel angle is.
Steering wheel interface The steering wheel covers all the necessary buttons to control Stella while driving. A LED ring supports the use of these buttons by indicating their state so they are easy and intuitive to use.
Simple start Stella is ready for departure by a simple turn of the key.
Regenerative braking
Stella features to types of braking, mechanical and electrical. To keep braking intuitive and efficient both are integrated into the same braking pedal. The amount of energy generated during braking is displayed on the lower part of the LED ring on the steering wheel.
Haptic feedback
Touchscreen
Stella’s speedometer is tangible. Parts of the steering wheel will expand or shrink depending on the speed of the car. A GPS system in the car is constantly aware of the legal velocity limit. This limit is compared to the user driven speed. When driven too fast the haptic feedback modules will expand, when driving too slow the modules will shrink. This enables the user to constantly keep his focus on the road.
A touchscreen in the dashboard of Stella features all secondary functionality to adjust any settings of the car. It also displays the current state of Stella: errors, warnings, state of charge, date and time and powerflow between all HV components.
Interior lighting The LED strip is responsive to actions of the user. The user gets feedback about the state of the car within the periphery of his vision. Without losing focus on the road or demanding extra cognitive effort.
Smart Cruise Control Stella features a smart cruise control function in which the speed of Stella can be determined by computers based for example on weather, traffic and route data.
Drive-neutral-reverse
Easy and intuitive to use knob to switch between driving modes. Simply put the car in drive to start your trip.
safety & road legality ROAD LEGALITY
Stella is approved by the Dutch road authority to drive on the Dutch roads. In order to reach this permit, the car had to meet all the requirements on electrical, structural and product safety. This means the car is not only prepared for an accident, the car also provides the driver with early warnings when components are not functioning and the car provides the driver with all front and rear lights people are used to. On top of that the climate within the car can be controlled with a heater and adjustible ventilation.
