Welcome to Lexington Catholic High School For 69 years, athletics and extra-curricular activities have been an integral part of our mission to educate the mind, spirit and body of the young men and women who walk onto our campus. It gives me great pleasure to welcome each of you to this 2020-2021 Lexington Catholic Knights athletic season. This community is proud of its student athletes for representing the ideals and mission of this institution. For many years, our teams have found success both on and off the field, as well as both academically and spiritually. We thank you for your attendance and support of our players in today’s matches. We continue to pray for the well-being, health, and success of all the student athletes participating in today’s game. Enjoy today’s game! Mathew P. George Principal
Fall 2020 Athletic Program These are unprecedented times for schools across the country and we are pleased our student-athletes have been able to take the field and court. There was much to be proud of this season as we watched our Girls’ Soccer, Boys’ Golf, and both Cross Country teams compete at the state level. The commitment the student-athletes make to their teammates and to Lexington Catholic is wonderful and showcased in the way they have trained and competed. The coaching staff and student-athletes represent our school with integrity, sportsmanship, athletic success, and a winning tradition that is the standard for competitive excellence in Kentucky. Barry and I have enjoyed watching our teams compete both in-person and on PrepSpin. Thank you all for giving us a reason to cheer! I will continue to keep all of you in my prayers. Go Knights! Mrs. Sandra R. Young, President

Varsity Football Coaching Staff Nigel Smith, Head Coach Nigel Smith is in his third year as head coach of the Knights and the fourth head football coach in the program’s 28 season history. Coach Smith has football roots that run very deep in Lexington. He graduated from Bryan Station High School in 1997, where he played football and was an All-City Honorable Mention at the quarterback and defensive back positions. He went on to play college football at the United States Military Academy at West Point, before transferring to the University of Kentucky. He was on the Wildcat teams that played in the ’98 Outback Bowl and the ’99 Music City Bowl. Smith was named to the 2002 All SEC Academic Team, and received his Bachelors’ degree in Education from UK, and his Master’s degree from Georgetown College. He also played professional football in the Arena Football League with the Lexington Horsemen in 2002 and 2003. As a standout defensive back, he was the leading tackler on the team, and set the Horsemen record for most solo tackles in a single game. In 2003, the Horsemen won the Indoor Bowl IV (the National Championship for Arena Football). Coach Smith begins his seventeenth season on the sideline; 3rd as Head Coach and his 10th as the Defensive Coordinator. He also teaches Social Studies at Catholic, serving as the Chair of the Social Studies Department. His wife, Cynthia, also teaches at LCHS in the Science Department. They have two sons, Shaun, 13, and Eric, 10. What I enjoy most about Lexington Catholic? “This is a place that you have to bring it every day,” says Smith. “If you are afraid of the challenge, you’ll shrink in the light of success.”
Varsity Football Coaching Staff KEVIN BRUGGEMAN - Assistant Head Coach, Knights and Rovers, Special Teams Kevin enters his 27th season coaching at Lexington Catholic High School. Kevin is the only person that has been involved in every football game played by Lexington Catholic. He was a player on the very first two seasons and has been a coach the other seasons. He currently is the Assistant Head Coach, Special Teams Coordinator, as well as the Knights and Rovers coach. Coach Bruggeman is a Lexington Catholic alumni, graduating with the class of 1993. While a student at Lexington Catholic, he was a four-year letterman in baseball, and a two-year letterman in football. After graduation, he continued his education at Eastern Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education: Sports Management. He began his coaching career with the Knights while in college, and has also coached in professional football with the Arena Football League’s Kentucky Horsemen for 4 seasons. Bruggeman currently teaches Physical Education at Lexington Catholic, as well as serving as Associate Athletic Director. He is married to Ann Tramontin-Bruggeman ‘93, who also works at Lexington Catholic. Kevin and Ann have two kids, Tony age 7 and Lucy age 5. What I enjoy most about Lexington Catholic? From the first 2 seasons as a player and all through my 27 years of coaching, the most exciting thing to me is the fact that we do not back down from a challenge. We have played some of the state’s most historic teams and will continue to do so. The fact that we have built a program that is one of the states finest gives me great joy.
MIKE SMITH - Athletic Trainer Mike is beginning his 4th year with the Lexington Clinic and the Lexington Catholic football team. He is an Athletic Trainer, Certified (ATC), receiving his certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association.
