KNIGHT SPIRIT A Letter from President Sandra R. Young

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, As we prepare and wait for the coming of Jesus, I have been thinking about the candles on the Advent wreath and their meanings: HOPE, LOVE, JOY, and PEACE. As a school, community, and country, I believe the Advent wreath symbolizes the foundation we as Catholics need to see the good in our everyday lives and the opportunity for a metanoia during these challenging times. Through introspection, we as a community can find the strength and resolve to support one another. The halls of Lexington Catholic have not been the same since March, but I have HOPE that we will soon return to “normal.” We are all grateful for the hard work our faculty has done, and continues to do so each day, to provide a quality education within a hybrid model. I am also thankful for the support the Board has given the school as we continue to navigate this school year. Thank you to our 2 / KNIG HT L I N E

outgoing board members: Marty Canning, Barry Kowalik, Susan Macke, Cecilia Page, and Linda Rumpke for their years of service and sharing of time, talent, and treasure. Welcome to our new Board members: Stephen Amato, Kevin Mussler, and Brandon Potter; I look forward to our future work together. I am grateful to Cindy Hamm, outgoing-Chair and current member, for her service and guidance. Thank you also to Robert Benvenuti, Chair, and Susan Lancho, Vice-chair, who have answered the call to provide new leadership. LOVE comes in many forms: love of God; love of family; love of school… I have witnessed the love the students at Catholic have for one another. Before we know it, they will be proud alums. Our Alumni Council, as you will read in this issue, has welcomed some new members with a LOVE of LCHS and commitment to the school. I am excited to see this partnership grow as they show their LOVE in action.

The wonderful picture on the cover of this magazine reminds us of the JOY we saw on the faces of the Class of 2020 with their families on graduation day. A graduation we will not forget! Thank you to the entire “village” of Lexington for helping us celebrate the Class of 2020. When I think of PEACE, I think of Father Norman, LCHS Chaplain. Father has such a wonderful way of bringing all of us together – alumni, families, students, and staff. On May 27, I had the privilege to attend his ordination anniversary Mass and celebrate God’s gift of Father to all of us. He is such an intricate part of our fabric and, in this issue, you will see a collection of his Instagram photos as a small sample of how he touches our lives. I sincerely wish that there will be hope, love, joy, and peace in your lives this Advent Season, while you hold the baby Jesus close to your heart.

H O NO R I NG FAT H E R RO B E R T J . B U E T E R , S . J . 194 2 - 2 019 by Kathleen Quigley Heroes are more likely to wear a cape than a collar, but in the summer of 1990, an unconventional and unexpected hero arrived at Lexington Catholic, adorned in the traditional Jesuit apparel, collar included. That summer, Lexington Catholic was looking at opening the school year with its lowest enrollment since 1951, when St. Catherine’s Academy and Lexington Latin merged to become Lexington Catholic High School. Like its mascot, Lexington Catholic was in dire need of a true Knight to confront the problems that threatened the school’s very existence. “Lexington Catholic needed a leader with a vision, and a leader with the conviction to see that vision come to fruition,” said Danny Haney, who was the Athletic Director of the school when Fr. Bueter arrived, “and miracle of miracles, there he was.” Now, nearly thirty years later, the Lexington Catholic community is mourning the unexpected loss of its former school president Fr. Robert J Bueter, S.J., who passed away after a brief illness, on Dec 2, 2019. For Fr. Bueter, his assignment at LCHS (from 1990 to 1999) was one that he would refer to as his most 4 / KNIG HT L I N E

beloved. After serving as principal for a year, he established the Jesuit administrative model and served as president for the remaining eight years. As president, Fr. Bueter helped raise enrollment at Lexington Catholic from 325 to over 750 students. The buildings and grounds were expanded, adding classrooms, a garden with fountain, a baseball field, a field house, weight room, a practice field, and bleachers. He greatly improved and expanded the athletics program, including instituting a football team. In honor of all he did for the school, Lexington Catholic built the Robert J. Bueter, S.J. Athletic Center in 2000. After his assignment at LCHS, Fr. Bueter pursued a doctorate, and generously served the various works in service of the Catholic church and his brother Jesuits; most notably as associate director of the Lumen Christi Institute (2003-2006), and as the associate director of Xavier University’s Center for Catholic Education. In 2013, Bob eagerly returned to Lexington Catholic at the request of then president, Dr. Steve Angelucci, where he served as a consultant in the advancement office. Current LCHS president, Sandra Young, had

even carved out a space for him in her office, so he would have a place to work when he came in. He was still working on ways to increase alumni and past parent involvement in the school to the end. In appreciation of all of his efforts on behalf of the school, a celebration of life service was held in the Bueter Gym on January 15, bringing together his family, friends, and the LCHS community to remember and honor Fr. Bueter’s lasting impact on the school and on our lives. Bob is survived by his two sisters (Mary and Kathy), one brother (Bernie), and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, who affectionately knew him as “Bobby.” He is mourned by the entire Lexington Catholic community.

Women’s Leadership

Celebrating and Inspiring the Young Women of Lexington Catholic with the Inaugural Women’s Leadership Event How do you build the next generation of women leaders? You help them understand concepts and terms by showing them examples of women who have a long history of leadership, breaking barriers, bettering their communities, and mentoring others. You encourage them to find their voice. …and you throw in a live performance from a Broadway star. The inaugural LCHS Women’s Leadership event set the stage, literally, for a leadership series that will inspire and empower the next generation of leaders. The event’s emcee, Dr. Emily Bonistall Postel, moderated a Q&A session with the special guests, drawing connections between their experiences and relating them to the lives of students in the audience. Councilwoman Kathy Plomin helped us understand the concept of representation by discussing the Breaking the Bronze Ceiling initiative. In honoring the progress made and the progress still to come, we capture women’s impact on history. Judge Pamela Goodwine spoke of her journey to the bench, providing an inspiring example of breaking barriers and teaching us what it means to shatter the glass ceiling. LCHS alumna, Laura Bell Bundy, discussed the inspiration behind her new album Women of Tomorrow. She gave a special live performance of her song “Get it Girl, You Go!” showing us that sometimes to raise your voice, you have to use your voice. The event brought these concepts to life, teaching us not only about the world in which we live, but about who we are and want to become. In the future we plan to engage the young women of Lexington Catholic, opening their minds to unlimited possibilities, through a Women’s Leadership Symposium. Dr. Emily Bonistall Postel says, “Future events in the leadership series should require sunglasses and sneakers because the future is bright and there’s shattered glass on the ground.”

Mathew George Principal

As I reflected on the start of my third year as principal of Lexington Catholic High School, I realized the events of this past spring have not only made us a stronger school, but a stronger community as well. March 13, 2020, changed the history of our school and the world around us. That evening our school shifted its day-to-day operations to address the COVID-19 issues plaguing our community. From March through May, Lexington Catholic High School, like many schools, conducted all instruction virtually away from the brick-and-mortar building that many of you called home during your years here. During these challenging times, this school community has remained flexible. This pandemic has also allowed us to venture into new avenues of instruction, technology, and a new mindset to meet the needs of 21st century learners. We have been able to provide limited in-person instruction since the start of the 2020-2021 academic year. The hybrid schedule that was adopted in response to COVID-19 allows us to have half our student population on campus, every other day. Students are still given the opportunity for face-to-face instruction with their teachers, interaction with their peers, and the many resources available to them at LCHS for their academic success. Through this, we have made significant improvements to our technology, which allows us to continue to provide all students with instruction in a virtual platform as well. Students learning virtually still mimic a normal school day, following their schedule, appearing online in uniform, and having the opportunity to meet with teachers one hour a day for office hours. Though nothing can replace in-person learning, our students continue to

Learning During COVID-19

receive the rigorous instruction and coursework that you did as students at LCHS. Despite the limitations put on us by the pandemic, we have still introduced new programs in engineering, implemented a block schedule, begun standardized test preparation in our courses, and have begun a Liberal Arts track to our Exemplar Scholar program. These programs, along with continued professional development for teachers, aid in maintaining the high-quality education this school has been known for. We, as a school community, appreciate your continued support, while we continue to provide a robust, faith-filled education to our current students. Know that each one of you remain in my thoughts and prayers during these uncertain times.

FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION ANNA MULLIS New Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing I am honored to serve as the new Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing at Lexington Catholic. My experience as Principal of Seton Catholic School, and administrator at Sts. Peter & Paul Regional Catholic School and Sayre School gives me unique insights that I hope will translate to expanding Lexington Catholic’s established footprint in our community. Challenging times offer opportunity. I find it exciting that today’s world allows for us to try new things, and present ourselves to prospective families and the community in ways that we would never have tried or considered in the past. There is something freeing and inspiring about those sorts of limitless possibilities. As you might imagine, this enrollment season is like no other. For the first time, the High School Placement Test (HSPT) is being administered online at our partner schools as a part of their regular school day for our incoming 9th grade students. This allows for a safe testing setting, for students to take the HSPT in their natural learning environment, for Lexington Catholic to deepen our ties with our partner

schools, thus strengthening our existing close bonds and further strengthening the bridge of understanding and collaboration. I am excited to share with you a new initiative we are adding – the Liberal Arts Institute for Excellence. This is a new addition to the Exemplar Scholars Program that has been successful in the Fine Arts and Math/Science/ Technology offering. The Liberal Arts Institute will seek students who desire a rigorous fouryear academic curriculum to develop critical thinking skills based in reading and writing. This area will concentrate on how a student sees our society, and how they can make it a better place, with an emphasis on our Catholic faith. The Liberal Arts Scholars will have the opportunity to engage with local professionals to help them on their journey. This will culminate with a Senior Project to showcase their skills. The application window for the Liberal Arts Institute for Excellence, and all of our Exemplar Scholars Programs, is October 6-December 11. Once again, I am honored and humbled to serve you. Please reach out to me. No question is too big or too small.

In early June, Dawson started feeling the symptoms herself. “It felt like I was drowning. I took myself to the ER and started this journey I didn’t think I would be on.“ Within 12 hours of being treated on her own floor, they decided she was getting worse, and needed to be airlifted to Nashville. Molly spent the next 17 days on a ventilator. “Plasma is one of the things that helped save my life”. Three months after recovering, Dawson is now making history. “She’s the first person we are collecting convalescent plasma from, who received convalescent plasma as part of her therapy when she was hospitalized,” said Medical Director of the Kentucky

Blood Center, Dr. Dennis Williams. Williams said this plasma is part of a therapy where they collect antibodies from patients who had COVID and have now recovered. “It’s a very powerful donation to be able to collect from one person to treat four others,” said Dr. Williams. He said they are still studying the convalescent plasma transfusions, saying anyone who gets a transfusion is monitored closely after. Molly’s dream as a nurse is to save lives any way she can. While she can’t work currently, she can help in other ways while she is recovering. Molly wants to encourage you to wear your mask and donate blood when you can.

FUTURE

Moving Forward Lexington Catholic High School is pleased to announce the hiring of Lexington-based construction company Dean Builds, Inc., to serve as the Construction Manager for their Capital Campaign Project, which will start later in 2020. In October of 2019, Lexington Catholic High School launched its public campaign Building a Better Future. The initiative will construct a 28,000 sq. ft addition on the back corner of the existing building, behind the Alumni Gym, for an expanded High Marks Center, new Science Center and Student Commons area. Dean Builds has a distinguished history of working with local organizations and a unique understanding of the needs of educational institutions. Recent work includes Sayre School, Berea College, and the University of Kentucky. Lexington Catholic President, Sandra Young, stated, “Our Capital Facilities Committee interviewed many companies both nationally and locally and felt that Dean Builds was the perfect fit for this project. Their commitment to quality, history of safety, and working within a confined footprint is essential for our school community and neighborhood.”

Lexington Catholic has also retained the local architectural firm, Pearson & Peters Architects of Lexington. They have a long-standing relationship with both the school and the Diocese of Lexington. Pearson & Peters has worked with Lexington Catholic for approximately 22 years, having designed the second-floor addition in 1998, the Fine Arts Center and Gymnasium in 2000, and other various projects over the years. The engineering consultants will be N3D Consulting Group for Mechanical and Electrical, Poage Engineers & Associates for Structural, with EA Partners for Civil Engineering. The project will address critical infrastructure needs and allow the physical space to accommodate 21st century STEM programming, with modern labs designed by Alltech, including an additional outdoor science classroom. Mrs. Deirdre Lyons, co-founder and director of corporate image and design at Alltech says, “We are delighted to support the students at Lexington Catholic in exploring the world around them through a scientific lens. It is our hope that this modern and inclusive learning environment will inspire the next generation of change-makers. We at Alltech believe that education is the primary catalyst for success and that progress is driven by insatiable curiosity.” The project will additionally include expanding the current High Marks Center which accommodates learning differences. The space will meet the increasing needs in this area for both individual and group learning. The project will initiate with the demolition of [3] houses and corner parking construction at the corner of Clays Mill & Stratford Drive on property owned by the school. President Young states, “With so many great companies in our corner to help execute our vision, we are excited to get started and know that the result will be a mark of excellence for our school today and for future generations.” WI NTER 2020 / 19

Knights Step Up to the Challenge Thank you to everyone who participated in our uKnight to Serve Challenge. We raised over $122,000 in 8 weeks! Net proceeds from the challenge will be approximately $115,000, helping to replace the funds raised through 2019 Hoagie Sales. Additionally, we gained 259 donors to the uKnight Fund over the prior year. While we did not achieve the 100% participation we hoped for, under the current circumstances we are so pleased. We appreciate the many businesses that provided incentive giveaway items. Along with dress down themed days, and cookies from our cafeteria staff, these lifted our spirits. The foundation for success in all private secondary schools is a robust annual fund. Our uKnight Fund provides resources needed for academic programming, student services, and the tuition assistance so many families rely on. 20 / KNI G HT L I N E

This challenge kicked off our efforts to raise $465,000 through June 30, 2021. If you did not have the opportunity to participate during the challenge period, you can do so anytime on our website or by contacting our Advancement office.

Everyone’s participation allowed the school to donate 5% of the proceeds to support the Catholic Action Center, almost $5,000. We are glad to be able to support so much through the uKnight to Serve Challenge.

GIVING BACK Diana Clark

Director of Annual Giving We began in the Fall of 2020 the celebration of Lexington Catholic’s 70th year of educating young men and women for service to their faith, their families, and to the world they are growing up in. You will see throughout this magazine, that your generosity has been a cornerstone of our work. Faculty, students, and staff have the resources to explore the intricacies of academia and the joy of personal and spiritual formation. This is possible because of you in the present, and decades of donors who have come before that, have believed in our Mission. There would be no today if it were not for you. There is a tomorrow because of your sacrifice. You might ask “what have our donors provided?” Each gift, small and large, has contributed to so many opportunities. We are committed to a personal

educational experience for our students, who are challenged to succeed by an outstanding faculty. This past year, we provided over $700,000 in financial assistance. Many a Lexington Catholic education was made possible

by you. We are committed to spending money on the school’s most important asset-our people. Salaries and benefits for faculty and staff are more than 65% of our total budget.

Our students continue a long tradition of “giving back” to the marginalized in our society. You enable this to happen. You continue, through your financial support, through volunteer efforts, and most importantly, through prayer, to strengthen that mission each year. We hope that whenever you are in the neighborhood, you will stop in to see first-hand what is new, what is creative, and what possibilities the future holds. Philanthropy is key to sustaining Lexington Catholic’s exceptional educational experience. Every student, along with every member of the faculty and staff, benefits from the gifts we received both last year and in the past. We work hard to be exemplary stewards of these gifts, and we thank you for supporting Lexington Catholic.

Students taking part in Kona Ice day as a thank you for supporting the uKnight to Serve Challenge.

“It was an easy choice for us to decide to give to Lexington Cathoic because LC gave us so much - strong academics as well as an emphasis on values and faith. Between athletics and social events we also had tons of fun. We developed strong friendships we still maintain today. We consider ourselves blessed that we were able to see all three of our children and our son-in-law graduate from our alma mater. The Thompsons love LC!”

alum of Catholic, I had great experiences inside and outside of the classroom, made lifelong friends, developed strong relationships, and was given a solid academic and spiritual foundation for the future. “I support Catholic education because it provides our children - our future - not only with a solid education but also with the tools to be upstanding, decent, and moral Christian men and women. Living in a culture that increasingly strives to secularize every facet of life, a Catholic education is more important than ever.”
