HONORED TO BE A KNIGHT Letter from President Sandra R. Young

The Seniors win the PowderPuff game and celebrate with their medals! The Annual Report this year represents more than a year gone by. This issue of Knightline celebrates our generous donors and shines a light on the uKnighted spirit of our community. Things once taken for granted; a crowded lunchroom, a full audience, and laughter in the halls have all been welcome and on display this season.

competitions. They have been volunteering with enthusiasm for service projects, and participating in events such as the homecoming dance, and powderpuff football. It’s terrific to see them taking advantage of the much-needed opportunities to cheer, laugh, and celebrate being a student at LC.

Since the school year began, the halls at Lexington Catholic were once again alive and filled with enthusiasm. Having our students, together in one space, was a welcome sight to see after 18 months of hybrid learning. Our SGA Leaders chose the 2021-2022 school year theme as, “Embrace the Moment” And our students are doing just that!

The pandemic has taught us all that we must live life to the fullest and appreciate the small things. We give thanks for the many gifts we have, as we Embrace the joy of the holiday season.

Students and their families have been “showing up” for each other at performances, events, and athletic

Director of Annual Giving

here is something exciting and fresh about the first day of school…seeing your friends after a long summer break, getting your books and syllabi, finding your locker, and anticipating the year to come. As a 2004 alumna of Lexington Catholic, I am reliving my “first day of school” but this time as a new employee. I recently began in the role of Director of Annual Giving at Catholic and I could not be more thrilled. I am now able to work for the school that brought so much joy, education, and lifelong friendships to my life. Catholic education is important to me for many reasons, but especially because of my parents’ influence and passion. Many people know my father as the man with his name on the football stadium, but what people may not know is that my dad worked many jobs in high school to afford his own Catholic education. That is why it was so important to him to give back and help students have the opportunity to attend a Catholic high school. It is an honor and privilege to help carry on his legacy here at Catholic. For the Fords, Lexington Catholic is a family affair. My four brothers attended Catholic, (Kevin ’94, Joey ’97, Jeffrey ’98, and Justin ’99), my niece is a current freshman (Sydney ’25), and God willing, my three children will attend here one day. This school and its mission are near and dear to my heart and it’s a privilege to work here. Once a Knight, always a Knight! Annual gifts to our uKnight Fund are the engine that drive innovation in the classroom and promote affordability for every student at Lexington Catholic. Tuition dollars alone do not cover the cost of a LC education. Your support is so important to help ensure my alma mater remains a viable option. Gifts to the uKnight Fund support our school operations including tuition assistance, class materials and new program resources. I invite you to stop by campus and say hello or give me a call/send me an email. I would love to catch up and chat about what our LexCath students are up to today. Go Knights! 4 / KNIG HT L I N E

Contributions to the uKnight Fund support our tuition assistance program. But… Did you know that uKnight donations have recently funded new equipment for our cafeteria, professional development for faculty, computers, smart boards, and other technology for classroom instruction? The uKnight Fund has sustained the High Marks Center and also provided the needed resources to implement our school psychologist position; that has made a tremendous impact on our students. Annual gifts are the engine that drives innovation in the classroom and affordability for every student at Lexington Catholic. Tuition dollars alone do not cover the cost of a Lexington Catholic education. Unrestricted donations made each year by parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends fund immediate needs and essential programs at Lexington Catholic. WINTER 2021 / 5

Leading the Way from Principal Mathew George

T

he Sisters of Charity of Nazareth who served as leaders of this school after the merger of St. Catherine’s Academy and Lexington Latin School, recognized the power of education and the transformation it would have on the citizens of Central Kentucky. Over the last two years during this pandemic, much like the Sisters, we have witnessed a transformation of how Catholic education is delivered and sustained in the Bluegrass area. As we have had to change with the times, the pandemic has given us time to reflect on where we are as a faith-based institution. Despite the challenges of social distancing, virtual learning, and other terms and concepts unheard of 2 years ago, we are a much better school having come

together the last two years to tackle the issues caused by COVID-19. We have been able to sustain and continue a quality education for the 750 students in our building. The pandemic has allowed us to make much needed changes in our technology infrastructure, allowed us to look at our academic offerings and curriculum, and explore best practices in day-to-day classroom instruction. Because so much of the world has gone “virtual,” we have had the opportunity to introduce dual enrollment classes for our juniors and seniors to better prepare them for online college courses. Through partnerships with Catholic University of America, Franciscan University, and Grand Canyon University, our students can earn college credit before stepping foot on a college campus via university online education platforms. Because of this opportunity, students are also able to take courses we would not traditionally offer such as American

Sign Language, a fifth-year foreign language, or upper-level engineering or business courses. Professional development has reinvigorated our teachers to look beyond our current capabilities and prepare for the classroom of tomorrow. This past academic year, 100% of our faculty participated in some type of “off-campus” professional development. This was a first in the school’s history. Virtual conferences have enabled all of our teachers to participate in learning opportunities with a variety of professionals, peers, and experts from all over the world. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff, thank you for your continued prayers and support. Know that each of you remain in my thoughts and prayers for good health and safety. In His Name, Mr. Mathew P. George, Ed.S. Principal

New Vice Principals Lead the School in the 2021-2022 School Year The end of the 2020-2021 academic year saw many changes not only in our teaching and learning, but in our staffing as well. Dr. Katherine Gartland has assumed the role of Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs, and Deacon Brendan O’Sullivan is the new Assistant Principal for Student Life. We are thrilled both have stepped into new roles of leadership at Lexington Catholic. Both have a commitment to their faith, the students, their colleagues, and the school community that will serve us well as we prepare for the next phase of our school’s history.

Director of Special Academic Programs

MEREDITH MULLINS

After 15 years in the English classroom, I began a new role at Lexington Catholic this August. As Director of Special Academic Programs, I oversee the Exemplar Scholars Program, our new Programs of Emphasis, and dual enrollment. I’m also in charge of organizing the applications for the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY). In addition, I am in the process of initiating a dual credit partnership with one of our local universities. Luckily, I am also still teaching one section of Honors American Literature! It is no secret that the pandemic wreaked havoc on education. The restrictions limited what could be offered, and our Exemplar Scholars Program was no exception. One of my main goals for this year is reinvigorating the program by bringing back the Leadership Speaker Series and mentorships while also brainstorming and initiating new ideas. For the first time, we have faculty advisors who head each of our special areas: Math, Science, and Technology (Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Boyd), Fine Arts (Mr. West), and Liberal Arts (Mr. Geraci). This fits with the program’s hands-on approach and “These dual enrollment adds additional support to ensure student success. courses allow our students Madison, Director of the In September, Sarah University of Kentucky’s Graham Office of Career to earn college credit and Management, kicked off our Leadership Speaker explore a wide range of Series by presenting on “Building Your Personal academic disciplines.” Brand.” We next had Mr. Jeffrey Terhune, CPA, speak on leadership and faith. He had a long career in the military and also holds degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Leadership. Recently, Dr. David Eaton, Program Manager at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research, spoke to our MST students about what it means to be a scientist. Our own Stephen Dorsett will be presenting to our Fine Arts students about his current art exhibit and what it means to be a professional artist. We have several other speakers in the works that I will be announcing soon. Unfortunately, due to a lack of bus drivers, field trips are still postponed, but we hope to get them going in the spring semester. I’m also extremely excited about our new Liberal Arts track. We have designed a curriculum that is truly humanities-based, allowing our students the most well-rounded, holistic education. In addition, these students will participate in community-based activities including an annual group service project that they create and execute each year. They will also partake in a jobembedded internship their junior year and present this experience at their senior showcase. The Programs of Emphasis (POE) is also new this year and a way for our students to pursue a passion or interest in Air and Space, Engineering, or Business. Students follow an academic pathway to eventually ‘major’ in one of these areas. Unlike our Exemplar Scholars Program, there is no application, and there are no additional requirements aside from the course load. We are currently looking at adding other ‘majors’ in the future. We have partnered with Grand Canyon University to offer additional online, asynchronous courses that enhance the offerings in our POE. These dual enrollment courses allow our students to earn college credit and explore a wide range of academic disciplines. Lastly, we are continuing to work on offering dual credit courses at Lexington Catholic High School. We hope to roll this out next fall. Most likely, the dual credit courses will be taught by our own faculty, and students will receive both high school and college credit at the completion of the course. This saves parents thousands of dollars and prepares our students for the rigors of higher education. I’ve truly enjoyed my first few months in this new role and am excited for the future of LC’s academic programs! WINTER 2021 / 7

Dear Future Knight Families, Lexington Catholic offers an outstanding, college-preparatory high school experience. The Class of 2021 earned more than 27 million dollars in merit and talent-based scholarships and logged over 14,000 service hours in the community. Lexington Catholic offers something for every learner, with 23 Advanced Placement (AP) classes, and the highly respected High Marks Center for Learning Enhancement. At Lexington Catholic, we recognize and appreciate that students learn differently and that a one-size-fits-all approach is not effective. Students at Lexington Catholic can explore their passion in one of the Programs of Emphasis or receive additional tutoring, mentoring, and support from the High Marks faculty. Of course, students do not have to be part of a special program to benefit from the high-quality education that Lexington Catholic provides. All students are valued for their unique needs, skills, and talents and will be given what they need to grow, thrive, and succeed. We encourage you to explore your options at Lexington Catholic and see firsthand the exceptional educational experience LC provides. Warm regards, Anna Mullis, VP Enrollment Management and Marketing Lea Anne Box, Admissions Counselor Leslie McGraw, Admissions Coordinator

GROUNDBREAKING B October 25, 2021 Thursday, October 28, 2021 was a special day for Lexington Catholic. The Building A Better Future Campaign, Phase 2 held its Groundbreaking Ceremony on campus. Representation from leadership, faculty, staff, and campaign lead donors were present, as Father Norman blessed the space behind Alumni gym. The moment was significant in achieving what began over a decade ago through conversations on the need for new science labs. As the school consulted for a feasibility study in 2015, we learned that donors to Lexington Catholic wanted this project, along with other improvements in aesthetics and added space. We also gained appreciation for the generosity that our donors provide to other diocesan initiatives and other philanthropic causes in Central Kentucky. Thereby making our development efforts more difficult and challenging expectations. We recognized the need to be strategic and patient in this process. The Campaign had many stops and starts, through the transition of administration and the global pandemic. Yet, we continued our

10 / KNI G HT L I N E

efforts to bring in new donors. Thank you to every individual and family that has contributed to this project , no matter the amount.

“This is another critical step in the dream of so many supporters of Lexington Catholic. It is an important investment in the school and the school’s mission…. many believe deeply in the mission of Lexington Catholic and are willing to support its development and growth.”

The gratitude extends beyond our donors and school leaders. Pearson & Peters architects have dedicated countless hours to the planning, drawing, and revising of the vision established, to arrive where we are today. The fundraising, timing and the design had to be in balance and they understood this. Jeff Pearson and Maureen Peters altered the vision over the years, but remained focused on the things our faculty shared with them as crucial needs to address: • • • •

Growing infrastructure for technology Expanding space for our High Marks Program Designing science labs for enhancing STEM curriculum Improving space for 21st century learning

In selecting Dean Builds to manage the construction, we have another

Bishop John Stowe. OFM Conv.

dedicated partner that we know is looking out in the best interest of our students and school community, in quality and safety. The new space will allow Lexington Catholic to continue as a leader in academic excellence and open new doors for partnerships outside our constituency. Over the next 24 months we will continue efforts to bring in additional donors to fund the project. So the school can remain in a solid financial position for years to come. We hope you will consider a gift to this campaign, to enhance programs, services and the environment that will elevate future graduates of Lexington Catholic.

From the Alumni Council Chair

KEVIN FORD As a 1994 alumnus and now a current parent of a freshman, it is an honor to be the chair of Lexington Catholic’s Alumni Council. Since I joined the council in 2019, I have been able to be a part of many exciting and engaging events including Keeneland tailgates and happy hours. Working with the council has allowed me to interact and reconnect with other alumni while also giving back to the school. The Lexington Catholic community is a special one. My closest friends are still my fellow classmates. I also enjoy working the “Chain Gang” for the football games. It is so much fun to be on the field on Friday nights and see current students in action. My siblings all attended Catholic and it gives us a chance to connect with something meaningful outside of our family. Now, my daughter is carrying on the tradition as the next generation. The Alumni Council represents alumni and gives a voice to our needs but also provides volunteer opportunities to help the school advance for years to come. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any ideas or suggestions to engage our alumni community. We welcome anyone who has an interest in joining the council. Help us make Lexington Catholic the best it can be for our future generations of LC alums! WI NTER 2021 / 15

FROM THE DESK OF ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Dave Nurnberg We were very excited about the fall we had in Lexington Catholic Athletics. To begin with, our new Play Like a Champion Today program hit the ground running. I am very proud to say that we had almost all coaches go through training in the program. We are now sharing weekly character education notes, and are gathering end of season surveys for all sports to gage our progress. I look forward to seeing the benchmarks we set to continue to improve each season. On the field we had a very successful fall. Volleyball and boys soccer both had strong seasons and made postseason pushes. Girls soccer made it to the state quarterfinals before losing

Girls Tournament December 18 - 21 Boys Tournament December 26 - 29

to the eventual state champions. Both boys and girls golf had team members advance to the state rounds. Football finished the season with a 9 and 3 record in the second round of the playoffs. Finally, volleyball, boys soccer, and girls soccer all won 2A State Championships back in September; and our girls cross country won the KHSAA State Championship for their division. Winter sports are in full swing of seasons. Bowling has already begun competitions. Boys and girls basketball, archery, and cheer and dance have started strong in the middle of their competition seasons as well. We’re looking forward to seeing their successes this season.

HOAGIES 2.0 We are bringing Hoagies back on April 23, 2022! Stay tuned for all the information. We want our alumni to come back home, volunteer and join in with our friends, parents and students as we have fun together and serve our community! It is a unique, communitybuilding, wonderful, and much celebrated LCHS tradition! HISTORY NOTE: The first Hoagie Sales were launched in September 1977. Inspired by the promise of a hoagie holiday (half-day off from school before Thanksgiving), the student body sold over 9,000 hoagies in their first year and netted $5,300. In 2019, we sold almost 38,000 hoagies and made over $120,000.
