INSIDE THIS ISSUE: UNVEILING THE FUTURE MEET COACH NICK BAISCH 2022-23 ANNUAL REPORT
M I N D + S P I R I T + B O D Y
From the President
ROB RUMPKE
As I write this letter, I am finishing my first four months as full-time president of Lexington Catholic High School, and I feel absolutely blessed to be here. I have learned through the years that good leadership is all about empathetic leadership and collaborative decisionmaking. In other words, we care about each other, who we are as people, as Christians and Catholics. We care about our families and other off campus and volunteer activities that are important to faculty and staff--because that’s what makes us tick and energizes us. Furthermore, we appreciate the opinions of others--we listen--and we take all thoughts and views into consideration when making important decisions. This is the management philosophy we’ve now introduced at Lexington Catholic and it’s positively charging our faculty and staff and changing the culture in our building. This is working perfectly with our new President-Principal management model, and a recent Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington approved new set of bylaws for our LCHS Board of Trustees. Speaking of buildings, we were so excited about the dedication and ribbon-cutting of our brand new $11 million 25,000 square-foot capital expansion on September 14. This expansion includes the Dr. Pearse & Deirdre Lyons Science Center, focusing on chemistry, biology, and STEM disciplines, and the O’Brien Family High Marks Center, which provides support for students with learning differences and offers
tutoring and academic support for all. This building represents our new unique marketing proposition of who we are at Lexington Catholic, and who we will be in the future. The job is not done as we still have $3 million to raise needed to close the project with no debt. A huge thank you to Mathew George our principal. This building project was dropped into his lap last year at this time when he took on the duties of President, as well as Principal. Without his steady management and guiding influence during that time on the new building we wouldn’t be where we are today. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mathew. Our athletics program at Lexington Catholic continues to be a shining beacon of the “Champions Made Here” mantra, and we’re thrilled with our new Head Football Coach Nick Baisch, and our new Boys’ Soccer Coach Todd Bretz. One clear change is we are encouraging designated donations to your sport or specific athletics project. We have funded and are installing new turf on our outdoor athletic fields over Christmas break, and we are fundraising for new LED lights, new fences for baseball and softball, and many other improvements to locker rooms and the field house. In conjunction with these fundraising efforts, the Diocese has also approved planning for a new grotto honoring our Blessed Virgin Mother Mary. You’ll be hearing a whole lot more about this in the future. In closing, I am looking forward to keeping the positive momentum going throughout this 2023-24 academic year, and to serving you in the future. I was truly called to be here. May God bless you and your families, and may God bless Lexington Catholic High School. Warm regards & blessings,
Rob Rumpke, President 2 / KNIG HT L I N E

Letter from Principal
MATHEW GEORGE
T
he opening of the Dr. Pearse and Deirdre Lyons Center for Academic Excellence and Science Wing is the culmination of a decade of dreams, dedication, and perseverance. Over seven decades ago, principal Sr. Celine Maria, SCN. opened our school to educate the whole student in “Mind, Spirit, and Body.” The teaching staff of the time, made up of the priests of the Diocese of Covington and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, may not have foreseen the technological and educational innovations of today, but their timeless dedication to providing each of our students with individual attention and unwavering academic support in a Catholic based education has become the cornerstone of our success. They laid the foundation for what has become a thriving school that continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of our students.
On behalf of our students, the administration and the faculty and staff, I would like to extend our gratitude to those whose unwavering support and guidance made this expansion possible. We are especially grateful to Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lexington. His belief in our mission and steadfast support have allowed us to flourish and expand our ministry beyond the confines of Clays Mill Road. I would like to express our appreciation to Dr. Steve Angelucci, our former President, and Mrs. Sally Stevens, my predecessor and former principal. Dr. Angelucci’s visionary
Over the past few weeks, I have reflected not only on the past seven decades, but also the remarkable journey of the past ten years. Our school has grown in both size and reputation. We’ve seen our students excel in academics, the arts, and sports. We’ve celebrated their achievements and successes as a school community. The opening of this new space not only made us reflect on our past, but it’s also about looking forward. The new classrooms and science labs allow us the opportunity to explore and implement exciting new programs and courses, while we maintain our commitment to providing a well-rounded education. Our students, both current and future, will experience a more handson and collaborative approach to their spiritual and academic growth. This new space will reflect not only our commitment to academics, but our ministry to continue the charism of the religious that staffed our school at the beginning. Many symbols and reminders of our faith traditions will be incorporated into the new edifice as a constant reminder that the mission of this school is rooted in “the ideals an moral values of the Gospel.”
approach and devotion to his alma mater have set the stage for the remarkable growth and innovation we see today. Mrs. Stevens’ commitment to nurturing and fostering a collaborative learning environment are a driving force in our approach to educating the next generation of Lexington Catholic Knights. My thanks to the dedicated faculty and staff, both past and present, who have shaped the mind, spirit, and body of generations of students. Their tireless efforts will continue to be seen in the students who have walked our halls and in this new space. Each of our students’ success is in part due to their work and commitment. Finally, to each of you, please know that you have the gratitude of our student body, the faculty, staff, and administration, and the many who will benefit from your generosity, prayers, and support in the future. As we celebrate this milestone, know that each of you continue to be in our thoughts and prayers and we are truly honored to carry on the legacy and mission of Lexington Catholic High School.

The O’BRIEN FAMILY HIGH MARKS CENTER Letter from
High Marks Director
Brandi Larkey
T
he O'Brien Family High Marks Center represents a pivotal moment in the history of Lexington Catholic. This innovative space has not only expanded our academic support capabilities but has also brought new hope and opportunities to countless families, especially those with students who learn differently and require tailored academic support plans. It is a beacon of inclusivity, reinforcing our commitment to providing the highest quality education to every student, regardless of their unique learning needs. Over the past decade, we have witnessed an exponential growth in the number of students with diagnosed learning differences at Lexington Catholic High School. Currently, one-third of our student body benefits from the invaluable services offered by High Marks. This growth is a testament to the indispensable role High Marks plays in our educational community and the lives of our students and families. Your generosity has played a vital role in enabling us to meet this increasing demand and to provide a nurturing environment where every student can thrive academically. The O'Brien Family High Marks Center not only enriches the educational experience of our students but also makes Lexington Catholic High School an attractive choice for families who may have otherwise overlooked Catholic or private education due to concerns about their child's specific learning needs. Your philanthropic spirit has significantly enhanced our school's ability to make a difference in the lives of those who may have felt marginalized in other educational settings.
“This innovative space has not only expanded our academic support capabilities but has also brought new hope and opportunities to countless families, especially those with students who learn differently and require tailored academic support plans.”
In addition to expressing gratitude on behalf of our entire school community, I would like to extend my personal thanks for your vision, dedication, and generosity. Your commitment to the betterment of our school and the broader community is truly inspiring. The O'Brien Family High Marks Center will be a lasting legacy of your kindness and goodwill, one that will continue to impact generations of students at Lexington Catholic.

UNVEILING THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION SCIENCE CENTER AND HIGH MARKS CAPITAL EXPANSION
S
eptember 14, 2023, marked a historic day for Lexington Catholic High School as the institution celebrated the grand opening of its brand new Science Center and High Marks Capital Expansion. The event was a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and unwavering support from the school’s community, and it was a momentous occasion that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on education in the region. The festivities commenced with a celebration Mass, presided over by Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., setting a tone of reverence and gratitude for the occasion. The spiritual connection was meaningful, signifying the importance of faith and education intertwined at Lexington Catholic. Following the Mass, guests gathered in the rotunda of the new High Marks facility for the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony. Principal Mathew George and President Rob Rumpke, both instrumental figures in the realization of this dream project, stepped forward to share their heartfelt words of appreciation. They expressed their profound gratitude to the generous donors and tireless individuals who had made this vision a reality. One of the most poignant moments of the evening came when Mrs. Deirdre Lyons took the stage. Her passion for science education was evident as she announced that her family and the Alltech company had generously donated 15 state-of-the-art science labs to area schools. “These new facilities will take Lexington Catholic to the next level in the quality of education we can provide, especially as it relates to the STEM discipline and experiential education for our students, which will allow them to prepare for jobs that do not even yet exist,” stated President Rumpke. The sentiment reverberated through the crowd, underscoring the transformative potential of the new Science Center and High Marks Capital Expansion. As a testament to the school’s commitment to its educators, the faculty and staff of Lexington Catholic were the first official group to tour the new facilities in the afternoon of September 14. Their excitement was unmistakable, and their anticipation of the opportunities these state-of-the-art spaces would provide for both them and their students was infectious. The spirit of inclusion continued on Friday, September 15, as all students had the opportunity to tour the new facilities. The day began with a student-led ribbon-cutting ceremony, orchestrated by the SGA Senior Officers. This symbolic act illustrated the student body’s enthusiasm for their new learning environment and the tangible progress the school had made towards enhancing their educational experience. In the words of Principal Mathew George, “This is a moment of pride and promise, and we are excited to see where the journey takes us from here.” The future indeed looks brighter than ever for Lexington Catholic, where education knows no bounds, and dreams are limitless. 10 / KNI G HT L I N E

EMPOWERING OUR ATHLETES INVESTING IN ATHLETIC FACILITIES
Lexington Catholic boasts a rich history of athletic success, and our current athletes continue to make us proud. Over 85% of our current student body is actively engaged in athletics, participating in one or more Lexington Catholic teams. However, our athletic facilities are in need of attention and investment to match the talent and dedication of our student-athletes.
PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE LEGACY BUILDING REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS
The Lexington Catholic Legacy Building stands as a symbol of our proud history and tradition. To continue effectively serving our community and providing the best possible education to our students, the Legacy Building requires critical repairs and improvements. SUPPORTING LEGACY BUILDING REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTS 1. Infrastructure The building’s infrastructure, including heating, cooling, and electrical systems, needs updates to ensure the safety and comfort of our students and faculty. There is currently a critical need in our Todd Theatre to repair the lighting, at a cost of around $18,000. 2. Aesthetics To maintain the charm and appeal of the Legacy Building, investments are needed for cosmetic enhancements, such as interior and exterior renovations. 3. Learning Environment Creating a conducive learning environment is vital. Contributions can help us modernize classrooms, install state-of-the-art educational technology, and provide students with comfortable and inspiring spaces.
SUPPORTING ATHLETIC FACILITY NEEDS AND IMPROVEMENTS 1. Renovations Our athletic facilities demand enhancements including state-of-the-art LED lighting on the outdoor athletic fields, new fencing on baseball and softball fields, upgraded locker rooms, and top-of-theline equipment to keep pace with our competition. 2. Safety Ensuring the safety of our athletes is paramount. Donations can assist in improving field conditions and equipment, reducing the risk of injuries, and keeping our athletes in peak condition. Investing in our athletic facilities not only fortifies our sports programs but also elevates the overall experience for our students. Your generous support can make a profound difference in the lives of our athletes. Donations can be designated to specific athletic teams or athletic-related needs.
Preserving the Legacy Building is not merely an act of preserving our history, but also a commitment to offering the best possible education to our students. We earnestly call upon our cherished alumni and generous donors to rally behind our beloved institution. Together, we can create a brighter and more promising future for Lexington Catholic. THE TODD THEATRE
Since its inception in 2002, the Todd Theatre has been a thriving center of creativity and inclusion for our students and the wider community. Over the years, it has played host to numerous exceptional performances by our talented theater, choir, and band students. The stage has witnessed heartwarming moments and become the cherished home of countless memories for our students. Beyond the realm of Fine Arts, the Todd Theatre has been a versatile space, accommodating Mass, faculty meetings, ESP guest speakers, athletic team gatherings, and much more. It truly is a space for everyone at Lexington Catholic. However, as our beloved theatre has entered its third decade, it’s clear that it needs some attention. Much of our current lighting system, dating back to the theatre’s construction, is showing its age, with many components broken or nearing the end of their functional life. Furthermore, advancements in stage lighting technology have rapidly evolved in the last two decades, and we want to ensure our students have access to industry-standard equipment. We are in urgent need of an upgrade to enable our students to continue shining on stage. To address this pressing need, we have set a fundraising goal of $18,500 for the Todd Theatre lighting upgrade. We believe with the support of our generous community, we can turn this vision into a reality. Your contribution, regardless of its size, will have a profound impact on our students’ lives and the quality of the performances they deliver. If you are interested in making a donation or know someone who might be willing to support this cause, please reach out to Anna Wagner Mullis, our Vice President of Advancement, at 859-277-7183 or via email at amullis@lexingtoncatholic.com. Alternatively, you can send a check made out to Lexington Catholic High School, earmarked for “Theatre- Lighting.” Additionally, on Tuesday, November 28, during Giving Tuesday, the Lexington Catholic community will unite in a 24hour giving event as part of #iGiveCatholic, raising funds for theatre lighting repair. #iGiveCatholic donations can be made online. Keep an eye on social media for more #iGiveCatholic information. Your contribution will not only enhance our theatre but also empower our students to pursue their passion for the arts. We warmly invite you to return to campus and join us for one of our outstanding shows or concerts during this school year. Your presence is a wonderful way to experience the positive impact of your support firsthand. Louise Wagers Bieschke ’67 and her husband, Patrick Bieschke ’67 met while attending LCHS. They were in Lexington recently and reenacted their first meeting. The picture is in the exact spot in the same hallway where Louise walked up to Patrick and said, “You’re Pat Bieschke, aren’t you?” And they have been married 54 years! Three of their children, Mark ‘89, Erik ‘90, and Christina ’99, are all LCHS alums. Their oldest brother, Joe, died in his junior year and would have been Class of ’88. They return yearly to present the award they established in memory of their son, Joe Bieschke, at the Academic Awards Banquet in May. They also make time to play in our golf outing every other year and have faithfully supported the golf outing with their hole sign “In Memory of Joe Bieschke and Tom Keough”, from the previous outing, The Principal’s Cup, to the current George Ewen uKnight Cup for over 20 years. After leaving Lexington in 2003, Louise and Patrick have lived in Southern California, Virginia, and Texas to be near their children and grandchildren.
Frank Taylor ‘82 was named by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ Club (KTFMC) as their 2023 Ted Bates Farm Manager of the Year. Taylor is a second-generation Farm Manager of the Year; his father Joe Taylor was honored with the award in 1976.
Kate Whitman ’18 returned home to Lexington after graduation from Saint Louis University and started a chapter of a non-profit organization called Once Upon A Room (OUR). OUR provides personalized hospital room makeovers to promote happiness and healing in the lives of critically ill and extended stay pediatric patients at the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Witnessing the joy and delight on the children’s faces upon seeing their new room makeovers is a heartwarming reminder of the impact that OUR-LEX has on the lives of these young patients. Two other LCHS alums have joined Kate in working with this nonprofit, Lily Giles ‘20 and Hannah Carlisle ‘22.
McKenna Geoghegan ‘14 married Matt Lundgard of Louisville (Trinity HS) on August 26, 2023, in Lexington.
Monica Rios ’15 married Anthony Donigian on May 19, 2023. They were the first wedding in the new chapel at St. Peter Claver. The wedding was celebrated with Father Norman Fischer. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Donigian!

James (JB) Krimm ’03 Is with the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority. He and Mary Sheppard Krimm were recently married and moved into their new home in Cross Hill, SC. JB received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Presbyterian College in South Carolina in 2007.
Stephan Morgan ‘03 is a federal agent living in Lexington with his wife Michelle, son Nathaniel, and soon to be baby. Tami Dobbins ‘92 Tami Dobbins is an interior designer at KPC Architectural Products, a full-service furniture dealership. She primarily works with libraries, education, and corporate entities, handling everything from space planning to furniture and finish selections. Tammy created the designs for the new space and stepped outside of the traditional classroom design, selecting furniture and finishes that not only paid homage to the tradition at Lexington Catholic but also reflected its future. “It’s always special to create a space for future students, but even more so when you personally have a past with the space.” She knew the space needed to embody academic excellence while also providing flexibility for lectures and collaborative learning spaces. Therese Graham Mathews ’74 lives in Louisville. She plays piano for St. Bernadette Church and teaches piano in her home. She and her husband, Jim, have 3 grown children living in Round Rock, Texas; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Simpsonville, Kentucky. Therese and Jim enjoy traveling and visiting their children and 5 young grandchildren (#6 due in August).
Alumni Knight 2023 was a heartwarming reunion, bringing together graduates from various classes for a night of cherished memories. The event saw the class of ’63 celebrating their 60th reunion in the Charlotte Lundergan Commons, while the class of ’73 marked their 50th in the cafeteria. Alums from ’68, ’78, ’83, and ’93, along with others from different years, gathered in the O’Brien Family High Marks Center, sharing stories and catching up. Alums traveled from far and wide, including Florida, Illinois, California, Tennessee, Nevada, Missouri, and even Germany, joining their Kentucky counterparts. Principal
Mathew George led a tour, guiding them through the school’s new and original facilities. The night continued with an exciting homecoming football game, where alums cheered on the Knights to a resounding victory over Pendleton County. The festivities continued with a lively dance in the Alumni Gym, featuring music from different eras and a spirited dance contest. Your presence reaffirmed the strong foundation of our school, and we deeply appreciate each one of you. Thank you for making this Alumni Knight truly exceptional!
