Welcome to Lexington Catholic High School For 68 years, athletics and extra-curricular activities have been an integral part of our mission to educate the mind, spirit and body of the young men and women who walk onto our campus. It gives me great pleasure to welcome each of you to this 2019-2020 Lexington Catholic Knights athletic season. This community is proud of its student athletes for representing the ideals and mission of this institution. For many years, our teams have found success both on and off the field, as well as both academically and spiritually. We thank you for your attendance and support of our players in today’s matches. Fall 2019 Athletic Program As I begin my first year as President of Lexington Catholic High School, it is my privilege to be part of many distinguished programs at our school. We have much to be proud of as we nurture the mind, spirit, and body of each student and highlight the commitment each student makes as they participate in the robust extra-curricular programs. The commitment the student-athletes make to their teammates and the school is prime example. The coaching staff and student-athletes represent our school with integrity, sportsmanship, athletic success, and a winning tradition that is the standard for sustained competitive excellence in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I was born in Lexington, Kentucky. After high school, I attended Georgetown College and graduated with a Communications and Media Studies degree. Shortly after, in 2010, I began working in the education field. I went back and received my master’s degree in Education. I started working at Lexington Catholic High School in August 2018, in the High Marks department. I began coaching the LCHS Dance Team in May 2019. I look forward to the amazing things this team will accomplish this year and am honored to be their coach!

Varsity Football Coaching Staff NIGEL SMITH, Head Coach Nigel Smith is in his second year as head coach of the Knights and the fourth head football coach in the program’s 27 season history. Coach Smith has football roots that run very deep in Lexington. He graduated from Bryan Station High School in 1997, where he played football and was an All-City Honorable Mention at the quarterback and defensive back positions. He went on to play college football at the United States Military Academy at West Point, before transferring to the University of Kentucky. He was on the Wildcat teams that played in the ’98 Outback Bowl and the ’99 Music City Bowl. Smith was named to the 2002 All SEC Academic Team, and received his Bachelors’ degree in Education from UK, and his Master’s degree from Georgetown College. He also played professional football in the Arena Football League with the Lexington Horsemen in 2002 and 2003. As a standout defensive back, he was the leading tackler on the team, and set the Horsemen record for most solo tackles in a single game. In 2003, the Horsemen won the Indoor Bowl IV (the National Championship for Arena Football). Coach Smith begins his sixteenth season on the sideline; 2nd as Head Coach and his 9th as the Defensive Coordinator. He also teaches Social Studies at Catholic, serving as the Chair of the Social Studies Department. His wife, Cynthia, also teaches at LCHS in the Science Department. They have two sons, Shaun, 12, and Eric, 9. What I enjoy most about Lexington Catholic? “This is a place that you have to bring it every day,” says Smith. “If you are afraid of the challenge, you’ll shrink in the light of success.”


Varsity Football Coaching Staff KEVIN BRUGGEMAN - Assistant Head Coach, Knights and Rovers, Special Teams Kevin enters his 27th season coaching at Lexington Catholic High School. Kevin is the only person that has been involved in every football game played by Lexington Catholic. He was a player on the very first two seasons and has been a coach the other seasons. He currently is the Assistant Head Coach, Special Teams Coordinator, as well as the Knights and Rovers coach. Coach Bruggeman is a Lexington Catholic alumni, graduating with the class of 1993. While a student at Lexington Catholic, he was a fouryear letterman in baseball, and a two-year letterman in football. After graduation, he continued his education at Eastern Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education: Sports Management. He began his coaching career with the Knights while in college, and has also coached in professional football with the Arena Football League’s Kentucky Horsemen for 4 seasons. Bruggeman currently teaches Physical Education at Lexington Catholic, as well as serving as Associate Athletic Director. He is married to Ann Tramontin-Bruggeman ‘93, who also works at Lexington Catholic. Kevin and Ann have two kids, Tony age 7 and Lucy age 5. What I enjoy most about Lexington Catholic? From the first 2 seasons as a player and all through my 27 years of coaching, the most exciting thing to me is the fact that we do not back down from a challenge. We have played some of the state’s most historic teams and will continue to do so. The fact that we have built a program that is one of the states finest gives me great joy.

KEVIN BAILEY-Assistant Coach As a former player and coach, Coach Bailey brings both experience and knowledge to the coaching staff. Coach Bailey is excited for the opportunity to work within the football program and assist in the development of these young men on and off the football field. Coach Bailey is also a teacher within the science department at Lexington Catholic High School. He is the proud husband to Jennifer and father to Beck (7) and Sid (6). Coach Bailey is a graduate of Lexington Catholic High School (1999) and the University of Virginia (2003), where he gained valuable experience on each football team.


Varsity Football Coaching Staff DANIEL BOWLING - Running Backs, Freshman Coach Daniel Bowling has been part of the Lexington Catholic staff for the last 12 years and is the running backs coach for the varsity Knights. Coach Bowling is a 2007 graduate of Lexington Catholic High School, where he lettered in football for the Knights. Daniel roamed the Lexington Catholic football field as a linebacker and played on the other side of the ball as an offensive lineman. He chose the University of Kentucky to continue his post-secondary education and graduated with a degree in Social Studies Education. He completed his master’s degree in education at Georgetown College. He teaches Government at Lexington Catholic. What I enjoy most about Lexington Catholic? “It’s a real pleasure to work with players and coaches that are fully invested in the future of the program.”

MIKE BROWNELL – Assistant Coach Mike is entering his 16th year coaching football; 13th year at Lexington Catholic. Coach Brownell works with both the middle school and high school programs. Mike owns a State Farm Insurance Agency in Lexington. Mike and his wife, Anne, have four boys, all played or are currently playing football at Lexington Catholic. Justin (2014) Carson (2018) Joshua junior QB and Camron 7th grader at Christ the King playing Middle School Football. Mike and Anne also have a 3 and 1/2 year old granddaughter, Isabella. “What I enjoy the most about Lexington Catholic?” Being a part of the great tradition at Lexington Catholic football is an honor. I enjoy working with the kids and learning from the outstanding coaching staff at LCHS. The most rewarding aspect is watching the kids we coach learn life lessons through football and become better men.


Varsity Football Coaching Staff JODI DIRAIMO - Assistant Coach Jodi DiRaimo has been involved with the Lexington Catholic football program since 2000, when his son Bobby (Class of 2011) attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and played in the Lexington Catholic Flag Football Program. Now in his 18th season, Coach DiRaimo is still going strong, and on the sidelines for every Knights football game. DiRaimo was born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, and played football in his younger days during the “leather helmet” era. He was a graduate of Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, VA. He was an All-State football player in high school, then went on to play for the University of Rhode Island in college, and professionally with the Providence Steamrollers. Coach DiRaimo is also a retired professional chef, having been owner and operator of Bravo Pitino’s, Giuseppe’s and Jodi DiRaimo’s Italian Cuisine. His passion for food still drives him to prepare meals for the Lexington Catholic football program, including several meals for the full team during the year. Jodi’s wife, Karen is retired from Farmers Bank & Capital Trust in Frankfort, and his son, Bobby is a former LC Offensive Lineman. “What I enjoy the most about Lexington Catholic?” “Coming from the old man on staff; I have worked with a lot of coaches in my days, but this group of guys at Lexington Catholic are no doubt devoted and passionate with our football players and staff. I miss George Ewen.”

TRENTON FIELDS - Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach Trenton Fields is entering his 4th year with the Lexington Catholic Football program and ninth year as a high school football coach. Coach Fields was the offensive coordinator at West Jessamine and Tates Creek prior to coming to Lexington Catholic. He will coach quarterbacks for Catholic this fall and was named Offensive Coordinator. Fields played football at Woodford County High School and graduated in 2007. He was a four year letterman and voted team captain twice. Trenton graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2012 with a degree in secondary social studies education and finished his master’s degree in special education in 2016. Trenton is married to Amy Fields and they have a four year old son named Eli. Amy is an English teacher at Tates Creek High School and they currently live in Versailles. What I am enjoy most about being associated with Lexington Catholic Football Team? “I enjoy the pressure to win that goes along with coaching at Lexington Catholic and the high expectations that are placed on the players.”


Varsity Football Coaching Staff DARIUS HUGHES – Assistant Coach will be entering his first season with the Lexington Catholic Knights football. Darius played football and baseball at Lafayette High School and then continued his baseball career at Kentucky State University. This will be his second season coaching football coming from coaching at Woodford County middle school and he has coached baseball for two seasons at Lafayette High School. Darius has expressed how excited he is to be able to work with these kids and this season.

RON KELLY - Strength & Conditioning, Defensive Line Coach Kelly begins his 14th season with the Knights. Coach Kelly was born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto, Canada. He played high school football for Lorne Park Secondary School in Canada and earned a scholarship to Western Kentucky University. As a Hilltopper, he played linebacker/defensive line and helped WKU to a 10-2 season in 1997. WKU advanced to the second round of the playoffs. He was voted a team captain that season, as well as defensive MVP. After his senior season at Western, Kelly was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League in 1998. After he was released, Coach Kelly began his teaching and coaching careers at Applewood Heights Secondary School in Mississauga. He was head coach his last four years with a record of 40-17. During the summers he was defensive co-Coordinator for the Etobicoke Eagles of the Ontario Varsity Football League. Coach Kelly earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a minor in Geography from Western Kentucky University. He received his Honors Specialist in PE and Health from the University of Western, Ontario in 2002. He currently teaches Physical Education, Health at Lexington Catholic. Varsity Football Coaching Staff ROB RUMPKE- Linebackers, Head Freshman Coach Rob Rumpke is entering his 22nd season as a Lexington Catholic football coach and his 15th with the high school team. Coach Rumpke coaches varsity linebackers and serves as the Defensive Coordinator of Freshman and JV teams. His experience is invaluable in preparing some of our younger play-ers to compete among the best in the state. Coach Rumpke grew up playing football in Cincinnati. He was names an All-City and Best Defensive Back in the Greater Cincinnati League (GCL) in 1976, playing for, Roger Bacon H.S. and went on to play and letter 3 years at the University of Dayton. After graduation in 1980, Rumpke returned to Roger Bacon to coach defense, while also working for the Cincinnati Reds. He is currently President/CEO of Bluegrass Tomorrow, an 18-county vision-ing, planning, organization. His son Marc is a freshman at the University of Dayton where he is continuing his football career and Michael (33) who starred in football and baseball at LC, also played baseball in college at Furman, Navarro Junior College and the University of New Orleans. Coach Rumpke’s wife Linda is a Vice President for Columbia Gas of Kentucky/NiSource. What I enjoy the most about Lexington Catholic? “I truly love Lexington Catholic and this amazing coaching staff, and the hundreds of kids over the years. I do this as a way to give back to a game that taught me so much about how to live my life, and service to our Lexington Catholic Community that has given my son and family so much, and service to our Church and God. There is no more important work than to help mold and develop young men and to be a role model in their lives so they can Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It. That’s what we teach in football and that’s the most important lesson in life. The lessons of the football field, the wins, the losses, the personal improvements, the failures, the discipline, the hard work, the teamwork… it’s a four-year life boot camp.”


Varsity Football Coaching Staff JAQUAR SANDERS -Wide Receivers Louisville native, JaQuar Sanders, started playing football at the age of 6. Through hard work and dedication, he became a high school standout at receiver earning regional and statewide recognition for his skills and leadership on the field. JaQuar then went on to play 4 years for his hometown school, the University of Louisville where he then graduated from in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in Communications and also a minor in Sociology. Upon graduation, JaQuar moved to Atlanta, Georgia and joined the workforce. After spending 2 years in Georgia, JaQuar was picked up by the Lexington Horsemen in 2005 and played with them for 5 seasons. Since the final season of the Lexington/Kentucky Horsemen, Coach Sanders has been working tirelessly to improve his skills as a mentor and coach. Co-owning an Arena team the Bluegrass Warhorses and Offensive Coordinator for a local Semi-pro team the Lexington Red Dragons. JaQuar has coached 16 years at the high school level 15 of those as an assistant at Lexington Catholic High School. JaQuar Sanders, also known as, Jag, to most, lives in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife Brittney and 2 children, Kadynce and Koldyn.

TERRY SCHICKEL – Assistant Coach With the 2019 football season, Terry Schickel will be an assistant coach with the Knights program for his 20th season. Coach Schickel is a native of Louisville, Kentucky and graduated from St.Xavier High School in 1984. After graduating from St. Xavier, he went on to attend the University of Kentucky and graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Marketing. Coach Schickel has been married to Julie Amato Schickel for twenty six years. Julie is an alumni of the Lexington Catholic High School. Terry and Julie have three daughters; Emily, 25, Erin, 21 and Anna, 17. “What I enjoy the most about Lexington Catholic?” “I enjoy watching these students develop into fine young men.”


Varsity Football Coaching Staff DAN SPANISH - Kickers Dan Spanish begins his 12th season with the Lexington Catholic Coaching staff, but his football experience goes well beyond that. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1967, where he lettered in football for three years. After college, he returned to his high school alma mater as an assistant coach for seven years. In 1974, Spanish began a twenty-nine-year career as a head coach at Connellsville High School in Pennsylvania. While at Connellsville, his team won several conference championships, enjoyed four undefeated regular seasons and won the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Championship in 1991. He coached 3 years at California University of Pennsylvania, working with the offensive line and kickers. In 2006, he moved to Lexington with his wife, Brenda (a Lexington Native) and joined the Lexington Catholic staff. Coach Spanish has a distinction of participating in the Pennsylvania Big 33 All-Star Game as both a player and a coach. He was name to the New Castle All-Time Football Team and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He was named conference coach of the year four times and in 1991 was chosen as WPIAL QUAD-A Coach of the Year by the Pittsburgh Press, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the National Football League.

TYLER STURGILL – Assistant Coach is a graduate of Tates Creek High School. Coach Sturgill went on to play 3 years at the University of Pikeville as an Offensive Lineman. He is assisting with the Linebackers in his first year of coaching.


Varsity Football Coaching Staff MIKE SMITH - Athletic Trainer Mike is beginning his 3rd year with the Lexington Clinic and the Lexington Catholic football team. He is an Athletic Trainer, Certified (ATC), receiving his certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association. Mike received his Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine from Mount Union University and Master of Science in Athletic Training from Indiana State University. Mike has over 20 years of experience in Sports Medicine with athletes at the professional, collegiate, high school and youth level. He comes to Lexington from OSU Sports Medicine. Mike worked most of his career for the Houston Astros Baseball Club in the minor leagues as an Athletic Trainer before being promoted, as the Strength & Conditioning Coordinator.

DR. DAVID DOME - Team Physician You may not recognize him walking the sidelines at a Lexington Catholic football game, but Dr. David Dome is an important part of keeping, and returning our boys to fully healthy and playing the sport they love. If a parent has to see him, they know it’s probably due to a serious injury. But they also know that their son in in excellent hands, and will be fully healthy once Dr. Dome is finished with him. Dr. David Dome received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky. He completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, South Carolina and a fellowship in Orthopedics Sports Medicine at Lipscomb Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee. He is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Dome is a team physician for numerous colleges and high schools in central Kentucky including Lexington Catholic High School, Bourbon County High School, Transylvania University, and University of the Cumberlands. He began his sports medicine career as a Certified Athletic Trainer and currently maintains that certification. Dr. Dome’s interest lies in the arthroscopy of the shoulder and elbow. He has been affiliated with Lexington Clinic since August 2000.

DAYNA BASTON - Head of Football Operations

Dayna begins her 6th season with the Knights where she helps with equipment, filming and administrative duties. A native of Lexington, she graduated from Lafayette High School and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Kentucky. While attending UK, she was a manger for the University of Kentucky Football Team. She currently is employed by UK College of Agriculture. “What I enjoy the most about Lexington Catholic?” “Lexington Catholic has a great tradition of excellence both on and off the field. Soccer Coaching Staff Jonathan Kincheloe Varsity Knights Head Coach Coach Kincheloe is a Lexington Catholic alumnus where he was a four-year varsity player who made the All-State Team twice and also achieved All-Region and All-District recognition. He attended Transylvania University where he again was a four-year starter, was awarded four-time MVP and earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-American honors. Since 2005, Coach Kincheloe has played for the USASA “Kentucky Wanderers”, the Kentucky Mens State Amateur Champions in 2005, 2006 and 2007. He recently played professionally on the Louisville Lightening indoor team and served as team captain. He was selected to the 2010 All League and All-Star team. Coach Kincheloe holds a USSF National “C” license and has coached with the Lexington Football Club since 2002 as well as the Kentucky Olympic Development program. He led LFC’s ’95 boys team to the 2009 state finals. In 2007, he served as the Transylvania mens assistant coach and from 2008-2011 he held the position of Lexington Catholic girls varsity assistant coach. This is Coach Kincheloe’s sixth year as Lexington Catholic’s boys varsity head coach. Mr. Kincheloe is the Assistant Principal for Student Services and Director of School Security at Lexington Catholic. He has been married to Brooke, his wonderful wife of ten years and they are proud parents of daughters Charlie Grayceann and Hunter Michelle.

Girls Soccer Coaching Staff

Lady Knights Varsity Head Coach TERRY QUIGLEY Terry Quigley has been a teacher and coach for over thirty years in Lexington and St. Louis. For the last 27, he has been the head coach of the Lexington Catholic Lady Knights, the 2002 State Champions. During his tenure, the Lady Knights have made 10 appearances in the state final four, winning in 2002 and losing in a shootout in 2005. In addition to the state title, under Coach Quigley, the Lady Knights have garnered 7 state runner-up titles, and have advanced to the region final 23 times, winning the region title 13 times. He and his assistant coaches have also been fortunate to coach many talented and exceptional individuals, of whom 87 were All-State players. Coach Quigley coached the Lexington Catholic boys’ soccer team from 1984 to 1998, as an assistant and head coach. In his two-plus seasons as the boys head coach, the Knights made two appearances in the region final, winning one region title and advancing to the state tournament. Mr. Quigley was the founder of the Kentucky High School Girls Soccer Coaches Association (“KHSGSCA”) and served as president of the organization from its inception in 1992 until 2007 After having taught Math for many years, Mr. Quigley is currently an Assistant Principal at Lexington Catholic High School.


Girls Soccer Coaching Staff

Katie Gray Frances Katie returns for her third year as an assistant coach. Katie is an alumna of Lexington Catholic, where she was a four year Varsity starter. She was named second-team All-State her junior year and first-team All-State her senior year. She was a member of the 2001 State Runner-up team and the 2002 State Championship team, where she had an assist and scored the winning goal. Katie played two years at Miami of Ohio before graduating from the University of Kentucky. During her soccer career, Katie was a member of the Kentucky Olympic Development Program and played for both the Kentucky Kickers Soccer Club and Lexington Football Club. Katie has gone on to attain two Masters Degrees in Education and is beginning her tenth eleventh year as an elementary school teacher. She is also the mother of a seven year old son, Charley.

Girls AssistantVarsity Coach Megan Skinner Megan starts her third year with the Lady Knights team. Megan’s coaching experience began in 1995 coaching 10 years with the University of Nebraska and she has been the Girls’ Director of Coaching and Player Development for two different youth soccer clubs in Nebraska and Kentucky. Megan currently coaches club with the Lexington Futbol Club (LFC) serving as the Girls Academy Director and U17 coach. Megan holds a USSF A coaching license and has also previously coached on the ODP Region II staff. During her playing days, Megan was a four-year started for the University of Creighton, Captain, and 1994 MVP (senior year). Megan is married to UK Volleyball Coach Craig Skinner and has three children, Sophie (15), Izzy (12), and Eli (10).

Volleyball Coaching Staff

Ashley Federle - Head Coach Ashley began coaching in 2013 as the Head Volleyball Coach for the Lady Knights. Under her leadership, the program has improved their record as well as increased numbers in participation and talent. This includes 5 college signees with 4 of them being Division 1 players. Ashley is actively involved in growing and developing volleyball in Lexington. During the off-season she is the Youth Coach for Lexington United Volleyball Club and Volleyball Performance Coach with Operation Athlete. Ashley was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She attended Marshall University earning a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management and Marketing, A Master’s degree in Athletic Administration, and a Master’s degree in Physical Education. She teaches health and physical education at Lexington Catholic. She is married to Adam Federle.
