Lexplorations Welcome to Lexplorations 2018! Registration Information

TUITION AND DEPOSIT • A $30 non­refundable deposit PER CLASS (applicable toward tuition) will hold your child’s space until May 30, when the balance is due. If the balance is not paid by May 30 your child’s space in the program cannot be guaranteed. • You may choose to send only the $30 deposit per class (per child) or the full tuition with the completed registration form. • Grade level refers to the grade your child will enter in September, 2018. • You may pay by check, Visa or MasterCard. LOCATIONS Classes will meet at Estabrook Elementary School (117 Grove Street) and Lexington High School (251 Waltham Street). Confirmations will be mailed (including room locations) in June. DROP­OFF AND PICK­UP Lexplorations programs meet from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm unless noted . Children should not be dropped off without an adult prior to 9:00 am. You must pick up children promptly at 3:00 pm. A late fee of $1.00 per minute will be charged for students remaining at the school past 3:10 pm. CLASS SIZE • Class size is generally limited to 12–15 students, depending on the age group. • Most classes have a minimum enrollment of 6 students. We will notify you if your child’s program must be canceled due to low enrollment. Students in canceled classes often find other Lexplorations programs of interest in which to enroll. • If a program is filled, you can request that your child be added to a wait list. PROGRAM CONTENT Programs that repeat are the same in content unless specifically noted in the description.


Lexplorations CANCELLATIONS, CHANGES AND WITHDRAWALS • All money is returned if LCE cancels a class. • A $15 Switch Fee will be charged for each change to a child’s registration. • If you withdraw from a program at least 10 days prior to the start date, tuition will be refunded minus the $30 per class, non­refundable deposit. • If you withdraw from a program less than 10 days prior to the start date, all tuition, including the deposit, per class, will be forfeited. SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE • Limited scholarship assistance (up to a 50% reduction/$500 family maximum) is available for Lexington residents. Please call for details. Lexplorations Estabrook Before­School Drop­Off Grades K­9 Students must be enrolled in a Lexplorations program to participate in the Before School Drop­Off. Lexplorations early drop­off program provides supervised play in the gymnasium from 8:00­9:00 am. Younger children will be accompanied to their regular classroom at 9:00 am. This before­school program is held at the Estabrook School only. LCE does not provide transportation. Pre­registration required. Estabrook After­School Care Grades K­9 Students must be enrolled in a Lexplorations program to participate in After School Care. LCE offers supervised activities and play, from 3:00­6:00 pm, with time for a parent­provided afternoon NUT­FREE snack. Children have the opportunity to enjoy both indoor and outdoor play. Lexplorations Grades K­2 *Where I Live: Our Community with Arthur & Friends Grades K­1 Dani Turner Estabrook Marc Brown and PBS’s famous aardvark, Arthur, lives in a very friendly community, just like Lexington and its surrounding towns! Come learn about the community you live in. Each day, we will read and discuss different books from the Arthur series. We will practice mapping skills and learn about important community helpers in our towns. We will also write thank­you notes to some of the important community helpers that we want to recognize. Games and arts & crafts activities will support the social studies learning that we do together. We will also view videos of the popular PBS series, Arthur, so we can see these community helpers in action! July 30 ­ August 3 $295 code: 5ARTH *Super Scientists Grades K­2 Erica Smith Estabrook Explore the scientific world as we experiment with chemistry, physics, electricity and properties of water. We will get our hands dirty as we make Oobleck, funny putty and sidewalk chalk. We will learn about physics and gravity as we study the art of making paper airplanes and other air­powered toys. We will be viewing episodes from the Magic School Bus to support learning. Learn how to make wonderful great crafts such as beaded jewelry, DIY puzzles, collage, tie­dyed tee shirts, bubble wrap sea creatures, clay creations, keepsake boxes and lots more! When not crafting, you will listen to story time, create your own pictures, and play various group games. Each day has a specific theme, such as “Beach Art” and “Flower Power!” and will include some activities and crafts that match the day’s theme. Lexplorations Grades K­2 *Zumba Kids Travel the World Grades K–2 Renae Stockton Nichols Estabrook Dance, shake, giggle, and groove in a Zumba® class created just for kids! Lively routines choreographed to Latin, Hip­Hop, and radio hits will combine music and movement into kid­friendly steps that are easy to learn and fun to perform. Each day will feature a 45­60 minute Zumba® Kids class, followed by activities, books, and videos that will explore the countries that the music and dances come from. Students will get a sense of what it would be like to live in these other countries, and will capture their learning through a world study journal and world­themed art projects. Learn about American history and what it was like to be a child long ago. You do not need to own or bring any of these dolls to join the fun. All dolls (not only American Girl dolls) are welcome! Each day we will also have a sports­related arts and crafts session, and some time to watch a short cartoon or film which focuses on sports and wellness. For half the day, we will safely experiment with common kitchen chemicals to produce science experiments, such as erupting volcanoes and growing crystals. We will also examine other scientific processes including fermentation and energy transference, through the creation of foods including pretzels, ice cream and chocolate chip cookies. We will record our findings in daily lab reports. During the second half of the day, we will explore the adventure offered through the language of story. We will also work toward developing and improving the basic skills necessary for reading well while making stories come alive through art projects. We will look at a variety of sources for inspiration, such as famous artists, nature, books, and more. You will bring home a lot of new artwork to fill your home art gallery! Grades K­2 NEW Kelly Torpey Estabrook Junior Scientists hop aboard the Magic School Bus for exciting and engaging scientific journeys. Each day we will investigate a different theme such as weather, insects, plants, water and the solar system, with different activities, read alouds and experiments. Scientists will have a chance to reflect on their journey through science talks and journal writing. Lexplorations Grades K ­ 2 *Messy Science Grades K­2 Anne Duffey Estabrook Make fun, cool, messy, and beautiful science experiments! We will learn simple engineering with catapults, race tracks, and towers. Make slime, flubber, and lemon volcanoes, and learn about simple chemical reactions. We will create science­based artwork including salt painting, puffy paint, and making crystals. We will log our scientific predictions and the results of our experiments in our science journals, and have science talks about why reactions occur, and how the scientific method works. Science in the early childhood classroom goes so well with play, art, and discovery. Let’s combine them all for a week and have some messy science fun! Design and create all week long as you work on arts and crafts projects, ranging from simple to more complicated projects that take a few days to complete. Projects may include decorating and painting wooden crafts, ceramics, calendars, coffee filter butterflies, aprons, sand art, and creating projects using beads and gimp. Our day will include a short movie after recess to give everyone a chance to cool down and relax before starting another activity. Each day is filled with science, stories, games and crafts as we learn about the ecology of this special place. What adaptations do animals have? How do you make it rain in a jar? Lexplorations Grades 1 ­ 2 *Magical Math Grades 1­2 Amy Shew Estabrook If you want to have some fun this summer, join us for some “magical math”! Play some great math games, like Sum Swamp, Rat a Tat Cat, Loose Change, Money Bags, Sudoku, Fire Station Dalmatian , Blink , and more. But we won’t just take math sitting down – we’ll also play some active games and have a “mathemagical” scavenger hunt! We will be entertained by a few brief math videos that teach concepts about money, telling time, and estimation. An estimation station will be part of each day, as well as some fun mathematical crafts. All of our magical math knowledge will culminate in the creation of your very own board game. You’ll get creative as you make props, and do craft and beading projects that correlate with the stories we read. We will also write, illustrate, and publish our very own silly story! In­class games will allow us to further explore Seuss’s famous way with words. In addition, we will explore science with planting and experimenting. We’ll also watch some cartoon video versions of books and the motion picture, Horton Hears a Who! Join us for a week filled with exploration, imagination, learning, and Silly Seuss fun! You will discover that coding is all around you, and create your very own code based game at the end of the week. We will start by exploring some human coding concepts as a pre­tech activity to activate your thinking. Then we will move onto laptop computers to transfer your new coding understanding and skills, and to build your unique game. Join us in Silly Science to engage in a variety of science experiments (including building and erupting volcanoes) using common household materials. We will even put on our engineer hats as we explore the laws of motion to design and build our own roller coasters. Join us as we try to answer the question “how many kinds of slime are there?”. Learn the logic behind creating codes, techniques to decipher them, and how to invent your own private code. Spy School teaches physical skills, problem solving, teamwork, and critical thinking within the framework of the exciting world of a spy. If you answered YES, then get ready for a week filled with fun, creativity and…HARRY POTTER! After you are sorted into your house, you will create your own Monster Book of Monsters, learn how to make a potion out of household items, and even design your own wand. The story will provide inspiration for our activities and adventures which we will document in our journals. So hop on your broomstick and join us for a “wizarding” week. Lexplorations Grades 3­5 *Artists & Authors Grades 3­5 Danielle Griffith Estabrook Calling all artists and authors! Create a fictional story that is developed, illustrated, and bound by you! In this jam­packed week you will produce your own picture books and learn creative writing strategies. Write, revise and edit your own creative fiction story using strong leads, descriptive language, and powerful narrative suspense, with endings that will leave your audience wanting more books by you! Choose different colored cotton yarn, design a stripe warp, thread the loom and start weaving your scarf. Finish by either adding a twist fringe to your scarf or sew your project into an infinity scarf. Learn how to use scratchboard to create striking black and white drawings of some of your favorite creatures. Scratchboard is a medium used by illustrators to make beautiful detailed images that resemble woodcuts or engravings. It is perfect for drawing animals with fur, feather, and fins! Using a pointed nib, lines and shading are scratched into black ink, revealing the white clay background underneath. The result is a bold black and white image that can be colored later with inks or pencil if desired. This workshop will take you through the process of choosing and sketching your subject, transferring the sketch to scratchboard, and making a variety of marks with different nibs to build your final image. Starting with the early use of barter, our journey of money will take our hero Farmer Fiona through the use of gold, paper money, and towards a future where she may not carry any currency at all. Along the way we will learn about the role of banks, interest rates, credit cards, blockchain technologies, and the importance of saving, managing, and making good choices in our own future financial lives. Students will play finance based games, and participate in various hands­on exercises to experiment with their new found skills in the world of money. July 16 ­July 20 $295 code: 3BART *3D Design & Printing Throw Down Grades 8­9 Lisa Contre Lexington High School Working in teams, students will learn the engineering design process, (brainstorm, building, testing, revaluating and revising) by responding to various design challenges. Students will learn how to use 3D modeling software to respond to the design challenges and how to prepare their files for 3D printing. At the end of the week each student will be able to take one object they designed home. Tuition is slightly higher for this program due to increased expenses.
