Special Election held in Samar MATUGUINAO, Samar --Only 167 of the 285 registered voters in Brgy. Nagpapacao has casted their votes during the Special Elections held Saturday in the said barangay here. Contrary to what happened on May 9 where a Vote Counting Machine was set ablaze by suspected members of the New People’s Army, the Special Election on Saturday was very peaceful, Samar Police Provincial OIC Director P/SSupt. Rommel Bernardo A. Cabagnot said. The police said that during the May 9 elections 232 of the 285 registered voters casted their votes that day. But after the incident on May 9 many of the residents had left their houses fearing for their lives if the armed men will return to the barangay and would continue to sow fear. The result of the special elections paved way for Mayor Melissa Dela Cruz to win her second re-election bid while her sister, Carmel Dela Cruz, got elected as the town’s vice mayor. Melissa of the Liberal Party received 2,479 votes while her rival Aran Boller of the Nacionalista Party, only got 1,829 votes. In the vice

mayoralty race, Carmel got 2,443 votes or 623 votes more than what her rival, Adong Florencio got. Police and military fully secured the special elections in Nagpapacao village, resulting to a peaceful and successful holding. The special election started at 8:20 a.m. and ended up before noontime. Matuguinao is almost an hour single motorcycle ride from Samar’s main highway, passing through a mix of paved and bumpy road. Nagpapacao village is more than two hours hike from the town center, crossing rivers and mountain terrain. The Commission on Elections declared failure of election in the village after seven bonnetwearing men in camouflage stormed the precinct after the residents casted their vote and shortly before the closure of the polling precinct. The armed men, believed to be private armies of a mayoralty candidate, burned the vote counting machine, shaded ballots and other paraphernalia and burned them outside the polling precinct. The military were patrolling in a nearby village when the incident took place. RCD

mayor from p. 1 clear reason given why the Dela Cernas resigned from their posts. But sources closed to the family revealed that fear for their lives after losing in the election was the probable reason. Due to the resignation of Dela Cerna, incumbent but outgoing Vice Mayor Norman Mesina and incumbent and outgoing No. 1 Municipal Councilor Catalina Tolero took their Oath of Office as Mayor and vice Mayor of this town. Dela Cerna lost the election against mayor-elect Rolando Espinosa with a wide margin of votes. Both Dela Cerna, incumbent mayor and Mesina incumbent vice mayor run against Espinosa but lost.

Sources requesting anonymity told this writer that even vice Mayor Mesina and Councilor Tolera were hesitant to accept the post because there is only few days before their terms end. But they cannot refuse because they are bound by the law. They can face legal problem and possible imprisonment if they would not accept it. New San Pedro Barangay Chairman also took office before a DILG officer. Days before election, Albuera town was placed by the military under the category of “Area of Concern” and this was the reason why a battalion of military from the 78th IB was detailed in the said town. Opinyon

New set of leaders The President of the Republic is new. And there will be a new set of leaders, except at the Supreme Court. There will be a new Senate President, Senate Pro-Tempore, Senate Majority and Minority Floor leader. In the House of Representatives, a new Speaker of the House shall be elected. There will be a new coalition. New majority bloc shall be formed. Committee chairmanships will be at hand. Opposition will be only a bite number. In the senate, Liberal Party will no longer be the dominating political party, and definitely, PDP-Laban will be leading the new majority bloc. Frank Drilon’s dream of staying as the Senate President will wane because Coco Pimentel will emerge as the new senate leader. That is, if Senator Alan Peter

Cayetano will agree. The opposition, including the Office of the Vice President (that is, if Leni Robredo have truly won) will always be at the watchful corner, will always bark at the administration, find fault at Duterte’s administration and possibly destroying the image of the President in advance of the next political race in 2019. Good if Marcos emerges as the winner of the Vice Presidency, because if Robredo truly have won, she will never say something good about Duterte. The new set of government leaders should agree to make Duterte’s administration invincible particularly in pushing for the re-imposition of the Death Penalty and his crime-busting activities. The men around Duterte should have one mind in fighting against crime. Otherwise, the campaign against crime will never be successful under his administration.

Bati ang Ormoc tungod kay nahimong “Most BusinessFriendly City in the Visayas”. Hindang caves, wild monkeys and zip line frequently visited by tourists

HINDANG, Leyte --- Number of tourists visiting the caves in this town, is increasing. The added attraction which made the tourist consider the place as good place to visit, is wild monkeys and the zip line. Department of Tourism in Eastern Visayas considers the place as “Must See sight” because of the beauty of the nature displayed in the area. The cave is in Brgy. San Vicente, a half kilometre walk from the national highway. Natural cave scenery, such as stalactites and stalagmites are rich inside the cave. Tourists also love to see the monkeys but feeding them is now prohibited. The zip line was installed at the highest portion of the area. It is now the only functional zip line in the province of Leyte after the Agas-agas and Albuera ziplines stopped operating. It has a distance of 740 meters and a height of 100 feet from the ground. Admission fee for a ride is P180. Said tourist destination is considered income-generating government enterprises of the town.
