January 2018 News, events and support opportunities for trans people, including non-binary people, across Scotland. Happy new year to all our T Monthly readers! What does 2018 have in store? For me, I have mixed feelings about January and can often find it hard to get motivated. I’m happy for others to make suggestions, but really it comes down to what feels ok for me at the time. Keeping this in mind, I’m hoping T Monthly will do just that, provide you with plenty of options and suggestions of how to get involved, so that you can choose what’s right for you at the time. If your group or organisation supports trans people, then let us know what you are up to. T Monthly has nearly 1000 subscribers and we know that many of you are sharing information through your own networks, so thank you. Our subscribers include individuals, health professionals, community group leaders and social network administrators who can all help share information. Please do make sure we make the most of these monthly e-bulletins and let us help you promote your events, groups and opportunities for trans and non-binary people far and wide across the country. Just contact me via jules@lgbthealth.org.uk or call 0131 523 1104. Looking forward to this month’s activities, we’re hosting Equal Recognition Reform Consultations at T times in both Glasgow (13th Jan) and Edinburgh (20th Jan). The Scottish Trans Alliance and Equality Network are calling for the reform of the Gender Recognition Act and we’re inviting you to contribute to the consultation. In addition to these group responses, the consultation will be greatly enriched by your individual response too, so to help you do this, the Scottish Trans Alliance have provided guidance here. If you’re keen to get active but in a supportive environment, LGBTQ Yoga sessions run in both Glasgow (starting 16th Jan) and Edinburgh (starting 20th Jan), so please do visit our website for more details. Into February we’re excited about the very first Sextival in Glasgow, the LGBT Swimming sessions beginning again in Edinburgh (including an amazing Queer Pool Party for LGBT History Month) and a community discussion in Edinburgh inspiring conversations about LGBT identities and the D/deaf community. Later in March we have a Self-acceptance skills workshop, which you now can book now here. Download the programme and we hope you’ll find something that’s right for you. Here’s to happy new beginnings, Jules If you’d like to promote your own activities, group or events for trans, including non-binary people through T Monthly, you can contact me via jules@lgbthealth.org.uk or by calling 0131 523 1104, I’ll be happy to help The submission deadline for the next edition is 26th January.

Facial Hair Removal Survey! Earlier this year the Scottish Trans Alliance formed a working group to look into improving access to funding for facial hair removal. The group is preparing a report to be used to lobby for improved funding. As part of this report, they need to collect information about the experiences of Scottish people in accessing facial hair removal. If you are impacted by this service, or may be in the future, please take a few minutes to complete this short survey and help us to show the NHS what the community wants and needs from them. Please share this link with anyone who might also be impacted by access to NHS hair removal services - https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ZLY56F2

Equal Recognition - have you say https://consult.gov.scot/family-law/review-of-the-genderrecognition-act-2004/ Scottish Trans Alliance and Equality Network are calling for the reform of the Gender Recognition Act. We are calling for the Scottish Government to recognise trans people’s right to self-determination. We know that achieving these calls will not resolve all trans equality and human rights issues – there is other work to be done. These three calls are key strategic priorities and are all within the power of the Scottish Government to act upon. Three calls for trans equality: 1. Introduce legal recognition for people who do not identify as men or women The law should be improved to provide legal recognition and identity documents to people who identify as other than men or women. No one should be forced to have a gender listed on their birth certificate or passport which does not correspond to how they actually live and identify. Many countries already legally recognise that some people do not identify as men or women and provide them with legal documents, such as birth certificates and passports, which respect their non-binary gender. (Having a non-binary gender identity is not the same as being a physically intersex person.) 2. Remove the psychiatric diagnosis requirement from legal gender recognition

Trans people can change their gender on their passports and other day-to-day documents without having to see a psychiatrist. However, the process to change legal gender on a birth certificate requires an applicant to receive a psychiatric diagnosis and to provide a detailed psychiatric report about their life history, current circumstances and identity in order to prove that diagnosis. This unnecessary and intrusive requirement undermines the personal autonomy of trans people because it places psychiatrists into the inappropriate role of gatekeepers to legal rights. Psychiatry should be about helping people improve their mental health and not about deciding which trans people merit access to their human rights. 3. Reduce the age at which people can get legal recognition of the gender they live as Currently a young person under the age of 18 cannot apply for a gender recognition certificate to correct the gender listed on their birth certificate. This undermines their self-esteem, violates their privacy and exposes them to discrimination. Significant numbers of young people are living successfully in a new gender with the full support of their parents and school teachers. Although they could easily satisfy all of the conditions required to receive gender recognition young people are discriminated against because of their age.
