Summer Reads
Here is a great book series to get into if you want to have something leisurely to read over the course of the summer. Veronica Roth created the series of Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. They are all quick reads (should take about 5-8 hours to read the entire thing) if you’re a speedy reader. The First of these books is Divergent. It sets the entire series up and has a lot of important information about how society works at this point in time. This book takes place in the future in the area that the Sears tower currently stands, but they have a fence for some reason like they are keeping something out of the area. This is the base of the story and is very important to the story. Also the movie to this book stays relatively true to what the book says which was surprising for a book turned movie
The Second book in this series by Veronica Roth is a lot of conflict. This section is primarily about surviving through the antagonist who will stop at nothing to succeed. This one is a little longer read than divergent but not by much. The main conflict seems to have been resolved and this is also where you learn about the larger conflict at hand and realize that what has just happened to the main character Beatrice Prior is just the beginning of all of the issues she will have. When I comes to post apocalyptic stories this one gets very creative and has a wonderful twist at that the end that make the entire book worth the time it takes to read.
Summer Resources Summer can be boring. After all the fun and freedom of the school year you return home to rules and regulations. For some you even have to avoid expressing your queer identities. Well in this section the resource center there is a wonder pamphlet created just for these times call What Next? Navigating Summer Away From Your BGSU LGBT* Student Community. In this you will find many things. These include but are not limited to:
• Boredom • Reassurance • Coping Methods • Reflecting • Reaching out to others • And much more
LGBT Pride Month Cleveland
Pride in Cleveland takes place every summer next to the Rock n Roll hall of fame and Lake Erie. It is a large park but still very secluded. They have a section for the LGBT youth (16-24) of Cleveland specifically so college students can roam between all locations in the park depending on how they are feeling. There are many vendors on the route to and in the park who sell all sorts of crazy things that can be a fun novelties to some people. Overall it’s a good celebration of the community. The date for pride is June 27th.

Columbus Pride, also known as Stonewall Pride, is one of the largest pride celebrations in Ohio. Know for being an incredibly fun and ridiculous party. There is a ton of stuff to do during this time. This is a special pride in the area because its actually a 3 day festival hosted over the weekend of June 19th Toledo
Similar to Columbus, Toledo Pride is also a weekend long celebration. Its very conveniently held in late August (28-30) So Students returning to campus can go an celebrate. Last year 18000 people joined in on the fun and festivities that happen in our local area.
Rainbow Days Recap The resource center held multiple events throughout all of Rainbow Days. They all had great turnouts and were a lot of fun for everyone who attended these events. Lavender Graduation- Jo Campbell from Higher Education was the Keynote to this event. She spoke about how the graduate could think about their futures and how they could become impactful in the world through their chosen field of work. There was also the presentation of the Allyship and Friendships award to the Wood County Library and First Presbeterian Church in the Bowling Green Community. Overall it was a great way to honor the graduates LGBT Karaoke- This was a fun event. It was a group of undergraduate and graduate students singing solos, duos, and trios. There was even back up dancing to some peoples songs. Although the musical selections did not extend beyond the early 2000’s the music was memorable and some of it was just funny Not So Straight Skate- This is always a fun event for the students. The musical choices were something that multiple students talked about loving. Since it was partnered with SMART we got to be on the main ice this year. With so much space it took a long time to get around for the inexperienced skater. Overall it was quite a bit of fun
Have a great summer
