In this Issue The excitement is always alwa high around the office when it’s time for the fashion issue. Everyone happily scans disc after disc of fashion collections. What trends do we choose? What looks tell the best story of the season? How will the fashion review relate to the fashion story? This time around it was simple: we had gotten our Tim Burton-inspired Alice in Wonderland fantasies out of our system, so it was on to more elegant and regal settings. What better icon of style to epitomise that feeling than Grace Kelly herself? With an exhibition about her style currently showing at the Victoria & Albert museum in London, and Vanity Fair having ha dedicating one of its recent issues to her and her legacy of style, it was an easy decision. For art, we checked in on the comings and goings of the Art Basel fair. Fine Art Advisor Michele Quinn, walked us through the rarified world of art during the four-

da affair. day Travel brought us back to our own backyard, Abu Dhabi. Wanting adventure but a slice of home led us to Anantara’s Qasr Al Sarab located in the Empty Quarter. With sunshine, endless sand dunes, pools, sumptuous buffets and relaxing spa treatments, what more could we really need? Our very own Adam Zacharias worked up a hunger while exploring Ho chi Minh City in Vietnam and shared his tasty adventure, meal by meal. Cultural Distinctions caught up with artist Mouna Hatoum in Beirut to find out what makes her tick and what her latest installation is really all about. With each issue of INDULGE, we encourage our readers to reach out to us and share their thoughts and ideas, so do enjo en y the issue and drop us a line at indulge@khaleejtimes.com Stephanie Rivers, Editor, or INDULGE or,

For fashion purist, film costume design and Edith Head are synonymous. There have ha been many designers who were more elaborately creative, perhaps more original, but no other costume designer has done more for this art form. Her design ethos was simple, costumes should support the character, er rather than er, compete with it. Ahead of her time, Edith understood, more than most, that clothing was not just adornment but a powerful means of visual communication between the character and the audience, working in conjunction with the sound and other visual elements of a film. During her storied career, career Edith worked and collaborated with several movie directors, the most notable being Alfred Hitchock. Head was costume designer on most of Hitchcock’s films, both at Paramount and later at Universal Pictures. A few of her more high profile Hitchcock films were: Notorious, the 1946 film starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman and To Catch a Thief, the 1955 film starring Grant and Grace Kelly. lly Here her trademark lly. style and deft hand were now discernible. The waists were nipped — later to be known in fashion circles as wasp waists, the skirts fuller and dresses fitted from shoulder to hem in a Grecian-column effect. eff The women she dressed, both in character and in life, were beautiful, strong and unafraid to embrace and use there femininity femininity. Edith dressed some of the biggest female actors of their day; da Grace Kelly, lly Gloria Swanlly, son, Mae West, Dorothy Lamour, Lamour Barbara Stanwyck, Audrey Hepburn, Olivia De HavilHa land, Elizabeth Taylor Taylor, ylor, Anne Baxter and Shirley McLaine. She is credited for creating the hour glass, figure-hugging outfits that West was notorious for wearing, as well as the clinging sarong skirt that Lamour wore in several films, a trend that carries through to today. da day. In the film Sabrina, who could forget Hep-

Head’s film career credits began with the silent film The Wanderer in the early 1920s and carried through to the black and white Steve Martin comedy, comedy Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid in the 1980s. Along the way, wa Head designed countless wardrobes for films, television mini-series and even designed the Women’s uniforms for the United States Coast Guard. She won her Academy Awards for The Heiress, 1949, Samson and Delilah, 1950, All About Eve, 1950, A Place in the Sun, 1951, Roman Holiday, Holida 1953, Sabrina, 1954, The Facts of Life, 1960, and The Sting, 1973. Little is truly known about Edith Head, outside of the steely persona she exuded. The origins of her birth are vague, with most biographer accounts and remaining records verifying California; It is known that she was married twice — once to Charles Head for thirteen years and to set designer Wiard Ihnen for thirty nine; that she graduated from Stanford University; worked as a language and art teacher; and was known for her bowl-cut blunt bangs and neat chignon at the back, oversized round black glasses, red lipstick and her penchant for skirt suits. Her famous persona was the basis for the wise-cracking superhero costume designer Edna in the Disney animated film The Incredibles, a tongue-n-cheek homage from Disney to one of the greats of movie history. ory ory. EMPTY QUARTER

BY ADAM ZACHARIAS

Nestled among the Villa Modas and the Zumas of the world, sits pretty a classy abode of stylishly mounted photographs. Yes, we are talking about the Empty Quarter — the only gallery solely dedicated to showcasing contemporary works of photographers of our times. The photos that fill this space are categorised into various themes ranging from The House, Fog n Darkness, Un Canny Places, Safe Playground Pla etc, with each of the exhibits solely the rendition of the artist to the subject under their lens. “The best part of these pics,” Elie, the director of the gallery, gallery says, sa “is that no digital tampering has been done to any of these. It is exactly as seen through the lens and as manipulated by the cameras.” One photo that was the most enigmatic of them all, was that of a portly man, deep in conversation with his business partner, partner is completely unaware una that he is being photographed. The photo is shot through the leaves lea of a tree as though a child is peeping with all his innocence. There are many photos like this one, that resonates with one’s life and catapults your imagination to great lengths. There is something for everyone here and its timing (that extends till 10 PM) lets not only the privileged crowd but also the working class, take a sneak peek into the world of photography. ography ography.

FASHIONABLE READS THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF STYLE

Nina Garcia’s The Little Black Book of Style, is an affectuous aff read on putting oneself together without the preachiness of ‘what not wear’ rules. She gives the reader a good look at her not so humble beginnings and why confidence is the sexiest accessory a woman can have. ha Nina knows a thing or two about fashion, she was the Fashion Director of Elle Magazine USA US and serves as a judge on the popular Project Runway Runwa show. show The book is illustrated by Ruben Toledo, who was a brilliant pick as he too knows a thing or two about fashion, his wife is Isabella Toledo, the former head designer for Anne Klein and her eponymous label. At 144 pages, it is a delightful and informative read that every fashionista-in-training should have ha on her bookshelf.

POOLSIDE WITH SLIM AARONS

“I’m only interested in taking pictures of attractive people, doing attractive things, in attractive places,” legendary lensman Slim Aarons once quipped. An ethos, he stuck with throughout his entire career. career Flip through the aesthetically beautiful Poolside and you will find a stunning array arra of vintage photos of wealthy, wealthy beautiful jet-setters doing just what Aarons liked: lounging, lounging splashing and sashaying sasha about in their seemingly glamourous well-connected lives. The pools are the main character of the book, but it is the tanned, slightly toned who’s who of society of that day da — social swans C.Z. Guest, Babe Paley Paley, ley, Lilly Pulitzer and Cheryl Tiegs, to name a few — that truly captivate.

INDIA, IN WORD & IMAGE

Where every turn dazzles more than the turn before. Where every nuance speaks of pageantry and celebration, of gods within gods, of maharajahs and past glory, glory of a sense of life and wonder unlike any other place on earth. It is a heady forward, albeit a truthful one, in author Eric Meola’s book on his beloved India, captured through his lens and shared through his experiences . It is also an apt description of a country noted for its beauty, beauty its heritage, its politics, poverty and populace. This visually beautiful table top tome captures the essence of things that India is known for: from the Pushkar fair; to buffalo buff crossing the Yamuna River; to the Temples of Tamil Nadu and more. Meola’s approach and lens, leaves lea the reader visually satiated, yet wanting more.

A Dublin thoroughfare at night (Dublin 2), is dedicated to prehistoric and medieval Ireland. While there, do take in the excellent new exhibition, “Kingship & Sacrifice.” The National Museum of Decorative Arts and History in Collins Barracks (Benburb Street, Dublin 7), houses an eclectic collection with historical relevance, notably the uniform Michael Collins was shot in, as well as an exhibition on the Easter Rising. 5PM Walk through St. Patrick Pa ’s Cathedral. St. PatPa rick’s is Ireland’s largest church and the National Cathedral - this special status was conferred on a church were no bishop actually has his throne. Founded in 1191 by Archbishop Comyn the building was substantially renovated between 1844 and 1869 with moneys granted and raised by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness. Visitors will thus find a neo-gothic cathedral with mixed architecture that reflects the original façade from the 1100s and the renovations from the 1800s. Also see the Boyle Family Tomb. The tomb is from the 17th century, century with the mementos dedicated to Turlough O’Carolan the Harper and Douglas Hyde, the first President of Ireland. 8PM Ta a walk on the wild side in the The Temple Take Bar The Temple Bar area, was originally a run Bar. down part of town to earmarked for a railway railwa terminus that was never built. Mornings are very slow in this area of town to but by evening time, the area is bustling with natives and tourists alike. SATURDAY, 11AM Become one with the arts with a visit to The Na-

Ireland’s National Gallery is a “must see” for anyone interer erested in Irish and European art history. ory Opened ory. in 1864, it is home to approximat appro ely 500 major works of art on display displa - among them Hogarth, Gainsborough, Poussin, Monet, Degas, Goya, Picasso, Caravaggio, Cara Brueghel, Vermeer, rmeer John rmeer, and Jack B. Yeats. Part Pa of the Gallery’s collection was bequeathed by George Bernhard Shaw Sha so pictures, busts and statues of the writer are prominently featured. The Gallery has recently expanded with the addition of the “Millennium Wing”whichfeaturesIrishartistsandportraits. 2PM Relive history with a visit to Kilmainham Jail (Inchicore Road, Dublin 8). The Kilmainham Jail is one of Europe’s most notorious prisons and has been preserved in working order. order Eternally cold and bare cells bear mute witness to the harsh prison life faced by inmates. In Irish history Kilmainham Gaol comes only second to the General Post Office - here the leaders of the 1916 rebellion were executed. Built in 1789, the jail has housed many a criminal and resistance heros. Robert Emmet spent his last days da here, Charles Stewart Parnell did time and the last prisoner, prisoner in the early 1920s, was none other than then Prime Minister, er Eamon de Valera er, himself. Upon his release in 1924, Kilmainham Gaol was shut down permanently. permanently Restored in the 1960s, it now acts as a museum of punishment as well as a memorial to all “martyrs” that ever spent time here. 5PM Visit Dublin Castle. Dublin Castle, is not a forbidding fortress that one may ma expect nor a fairy-tale image either, either with its patchwork façade, a style that reflects its many evolutions and renovations throughout the centuries. The defensive character is gone but the beautiful gardens and impressive state rooms more than make up for it. Originally built in the 13th century the Anglo-Norman castle burned down tury, in 1684. Sir William Robinson then developed

plans to re-build it without major defensive installations and with an eye on providing the government with a fine contemporary home. Thus present-day -da Dublin Castle was born. -day 7:30PM Stroll through Phoenix Park. Phoenix Park is the world’s largest enclosed municipal park and becauseofitssize, itcantakedays da togetthrough days it - from the magnificent residences of the Irish President and the Ambassador of the United States to the quaint cricket and polo fields, from Ashtown Castle to the Garda Headquarters and from the herds of deer roaming free to the animals in Dublin Zoo it is not to be missed. Dublin without Guinness is like Milwaukee without ... you get the the point (or pint)! Nowhere is Guinness more the center of attention as in the Guinness Storehouse. Based at historic St James’s Gate (Dublin 8) this is part of the original brewery. brewery The exhibitions include the brewing process, the Guinness transportation system and a pipeline much maligned by thirsty but thrifty Dubliners. Young Arthur Guinness took over the St. James’s Gate Brewery in 1759, agreeing on a payment pa of £45 per year - and time is running out! His lease was fixed for 9,000 years, so try to get here before the year 10759.

plethora of iconic monarchs have ha swa swayed in and out of notoriety over the last century, century but no name has quite the resonance and enduring popularity in as many varied collective spheres as Grace Patricia Kelly. lly lly. The pretty Philadelphia girl who went to LA in search of fame, eventually won an Oscar and attracted the attentions of a European prince, is a story that screams ‘Walt ‘W Disney serial’, but not one many could have ha foreseen when confronted with the thousands of similar looking young women who made the journey from the rest of the country to Tinsel Town at the same time. It is therefore testament to her abilities as an actress, her astounding beauty and style, which saw sa her plucked from obscurity and put on the fast-track to a fairytale existence, albeit one that ended in ill-fated tragedy and far too soon. This September will mark the passing of 28 years since Her Serene Highness, The Princess of Monaco was taken from this world. Yet, almost thirty years on, her image remains very much at the forefront of pop culture. Her spirit, of course, lives on through her movies. Perhaps the best known, High Society, Society is pla played nearly every holiday holida season and The Country Girl (for which Kelly won her Academy Award) is a brilliant reflection of 50s cinema and frequently repeated on television. Despite her success onscreen, Kelly retired from acting at the early age of 26. By then, married to Prince Ranier III, it was deemed her duties in Monaco take priority and that movies were no longer a viable activity for a royal. Duties for the princess included charity work and raising a family. family Again, owing to Kelly’s effortless eff charm and character, er her er, charities flourished. Family life, on the other hand, was another matter. Constant rumours persisted about the prince and princess’ marital relationship and the effect eff it was having ha on their children. Despite steadfastly never talking about her private life, these rumours kept her in the newspapers and public consciousness, not always alwa for the right reasons.

It could be argued that the predominant reason for Kelly’s lasting appeal, however, however was her influence on fashion and the designer world’s embrace of her true Hollywood and adopted European regal glamour. When interviewed on red carpets from various award ceremonies, countless starlets have ha intoned that Kelly was their muse for the evening’s ensemble. In fact, her name has become synonymous with a bygone allure and led to many commentatorsscoringactressesonanalmost, ‘how far do they capture the Grace Kelly look’ scale. The mere mention of her name conjures up images of feminine elegance, magnetism and is a symbol for the golden age of film and how stars were traditionally perceived. During her time on screen and even more so when she became a princess, all the major fashion press held her as the epitome of style at the time. Vogue hailed her as a breakthrough artist who, in spite of her tender age espoused the virtues of womanhood rather than create the illusion of the bedazzled girl next door, door which was popular at the time. Her figure-hugging, expertly cut day da outfits were almost as popular as the evening gowns she wore to functions. Walking along the streets of Paris or Monte Carlo, Kelly’s look was crisp and fresh, functional yet impeccably coutured. One-off suits tailored especially for her by Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior made affluent society women scramble to design houses in an attempt to recreate her image. Later Jacqueline Kennedy would revisit a similar style to the same effect. eff It was a comparable story with Kelly’s formalwear One- piece, lace over satin, slim A-line, wear. corset back gowns with short cap-sleeves were her speciality. speciality Kelly wore silk and satin, accentuated by her elaborate collection of jewellery, jewellery as easily as most people throw on beachwear. beachwear Photographed on a countless number of occasions, each item she wore was a piece of fashion history in itself and entered showbiz folklore. This was no more apparent than with her wedding dress, perhaps the most formal of formalwear made by Oscar-w wear, Oscar inning costumier Helen

Rose of MGM. 300 yards of Brussels rose-point lace, 100 yards of silk net and a three foot train all studded with pearls made up the astonishing gown and is still revered as one of the most stunning bridal creations ever designed. Aside from Kelly’s inspiration as a model, for whom designers fell over themselves to cut clothes for, for she is also credited with fuelling the modern appetite for accessories. Chiff scarves and oversized horn-rimmed Chiffon sunglasses were staples and a fascination with handbags led to a long term professional relationship with Hermes. When pregnant, Kelly demanded larger and larger bags to hide her expanding baby bump. For this unique behavbeha iour Hermes named the distinct model she carried the ‘Kelly Bag,’ which sells to this day. da Costing upwards of $5,000, it is still the bag that has the longest waiting list for Hermes in the world. Kelly was a patron of Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, yet also wore Cartier and, as a result of her close relationship, became an integral part of Hermes’ branding. She was fiercely loyal to the designers she admired and famously never threw anything away. ay Even when her image briefly went out of ay. style in the heady late sixties and early seventies, Kelly would not conform and to her credit rode out those few years maintaining what she saw sa as her dignity and ultimately coming out on top as her popularity grew once again. That popularity continues to soar to this day. da Modern designers continuously bring out new Kelly-inspired creations that always alwa manage to garnernotoriety. oriety Sixone-of-a-kind oriety. one-of one-of-a-kind dresseswere recently created in her honour by the fashion powerhouses of today da - Oscar de la Renta, Ralph day Lauren, Vera Wang, ng Carolina Herrera, Ralph ng, Rucci and Zac Posen – in order to be auctioned off for the Princess Grace Foundation, each of which had a starting price of $2000. With an everlasting beauty, beauty glamour and elegance, it is unlikely Grace Kelly’s universal appeal will ever be seen in someone again. It is for that reason that her image will endure and designers will always alwa hold her as the pinnacle of couture success.

An audience that is resistant to traditional advertising mediums. The films circumvent the traditional medium of television commercials and their high cost. A 30-second commercial can cost upwards of $1,000,000, plus the hassle of distribution rights, networks and air times, while an online film can cost approximately $60,000 to produce, without the hassle of distribution rights, costs, etc. Fiscal inspiration, indeed. Due to lower costs of productions, fashion houses are also more daring with concepts and offerings. off With the fast paced, short attention span ‘had it three seconds ago’ generation, as well as advanced product launches like Apple’s iPad, digital technology and the Internet have ha become intrinsic with the success of a fashion brand, especially a luxury one. Brands have ha to look to new mediums to move people and to

Digital technology and online, allows the brand to broaden its reach, allowing its customer, omer or omer, future customers, to interact with the brand. Their short film, 2-minutes not counting credits, focused on life as a journey, journey taking a close look at everyday everyda things people do, at the hopes, dreams and aspirations of individuals. The result was a rich short-film that stirred the viewer’s emotions with hauntingly beautiful imagery and music — guitar — in a wash of cinematic verve. It made one stop and think, question, a feat that was the purpose of the film but also a wonderful subtext without hammering home the brand messaging. Marni’s arty and obscure release in January 2010 was a 2-minute stop-motion video vignette done in collaboration with video artist Rohan Wadham, featuring two white porcelain almond-eyed dolls. The short was one part art installation vibe and one part eerie Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas style, with a touch of film noir thrown in. The viewers observe the two dolls finding their wa across a white frozen tundra and to each way other by the film’s end. The message was unclear was it about solitude and finding oneclear, self? Regaining what one has lost? Or just simply art for art’s sake? That maybe ma the answer in itself, to make you question and wonder, wonder as that is what art is about. The New York clothing retailer, retailer Steven

Alan, comes only second to Lady Blue Shanghai with their 8-minute long minisode which presented his Spring/Summer 2010 collection via Vimeo, a video-sharing website last September. Messaging and branding here was truly subtle, as the only acknowledgement of the brand and what the film may ma be about was during the opening credits. The film showcases a couple’s day da in the country, country doing romantic and everyday everyda things that two people in love do: enjoying the summer weather and the drive, unloading the car, car eating, riding bicycles and spending time together. It did not tug on heartstrings, nor evoke any emotional stirring but showcased the brand’s luxe-cumhomey vibe efficiently and effortlessly effortlessly. ortlessly. Chanel has made several more minisodes since the initial Chanel No 5, with an updated Chanel No 5 featuring French actor Audrey Tatou on a train, with chance meetings and just-missed moments between two strangers, whose lives are intertwined on a train. The branding is the usual style of Chanel with the double C logo appearing on doors, sidewalks and the like. Ms Tatou has the kind of face that is expressive, open and beautiful and an ingénue appeal that draws dra the viewer in. Karl Largerfeld, creative director of Chanel also has recently created Remember Now, a passionate look at gilded youth with a touch of Frederico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. The film looks at a man (French actor Pascal Greggory) revisting his beloved Saint-Tropez after nearly 30 years. Fashion has a tendency to mirror life, so many of the inspirations behind these mini cinematic features are previous films, think Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, Lolita, Brigette Bardot, Truffaut, Lynch and Hitchcock, as much for their content as for their look and feel. Prada mined Lolita for its Riviera Love, which promotes their new line of sunglasses and Chanel’s wove a Fellini back-story into Remember Now. Forward thinking brands are already grasping the obvious of three-dimensional fashion and the visual rewards it can bring. The creation of these film noir-inspired short-films are making the medium the hottest new accessory for a brand and its ability to evoke emotions, visually stimulate the viewer and promote itself.

The past years have ha had various degrees of critical success in terms of the quality of the work shown; this year may ma yet prove that this exhibition program model may ma have ha extended beyond its relevance. With far fewer large scale productions and the predominance of video installations, it can feel more like a critic on the current economic situation, with less money for large-scale productions, than a statement of the political or social relevance of the work itself. fore I began inspecting what the nearby street carts had to offer off . As well as the aforementioned squid, two common snacks on sale are steamed ‘banh bao’ buns and the French-influenced ‘banh mi’ baguette sandwiches (Muslims beware though – both these stomach fillers are likely to contain pork). While either provides a nourishing nibble between meals, picky eaters may ma be disadvantaged by the ‘lucky dip’ manner in which both ‘banh bao’ and ‘banh mi’ are usually served. Depending on each individual seller, seller the former may ma contain anything from egg to chicken to vegetables within its puffy puff dumpling, while the latter will likely be overloaded with ingredients including pate, chili peppers, assorted meat, cucumber and mayonnaise. ma If you’re after a lighter snack, try quail eggs. You won’t even have ha to go looking for this delicacy, as they’re sold in small plastic sacks by wandering vendors throughout the city. city A word of warning though: be it sunglasses, books or monkey nuts, Saigon street vendors tend to favour fa the hard sell and can sniff out a fresh-faced tourist from a mile away. ay Whatay. ever you want, don’t let yourself be pushed around and try to ensure you’re paying pa a fair price, even if it only means the difference diff of a few thousand dong. Vietnam is famed for its sugary iced coffee coff (‘ca phe sua da’), also readily available from carts dotted all over Ho Chi Minh. Mixing black coffee coff with sweetened condensed milk, the refreshing beverage is poured over ice and can be bought in clear plastic cups for the equivalent of two dirhams. If that doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, most restaurants offer off

banana or pineapple fritters, along with ice cream for a traditional dessert. If you do have ha a cheeky hankering for something a little more familiar, familiar pizza is a familiar item on restaurant menus – although it may ma set you back a little more than a local dish – or you could try the delicious full English breakfast at a pub (imaginatively titled ‘Le Pub’) in District 1. But let’s shun such frivolities and get back to the issue at hand. A staple part of my holida diet was the widely available ‘banh xeo’, a day crepe pancake indigenous to southern Vietnam which is filled with chicken, shrimp, bean sprouts, lettuce and spring onions. And ‘pho’ also demands a mention – possibly the most famous of all the nation’s foods, it’s a noodle soup which contains thin strips of chicken or beef, alongside spring onions, ginger vinegar, ginger, vinegar pepper and chili. Ensure you don’t leave lea the country before you’ve tried it. When it comes to fast food, the socialist

republic nation has so far managed to resist the globe-strangling might of McDonald’s or Burger King (the most recognised explanation is that the government fears their introduction would devastate the country’s farming industry). One of the few Western chains to have ha successfully set up shop is KFC, although rumours are abuzz that Subwa will be coming way to Saigon in the near future. But overall the Vietnamese are a lean and healthy people, with few obesity problems (this rule seemed to change when it came to my neighbouring passengers flying into and out of Ho Chi Minh, but that’s another story). This is largely thanks to their reliance on simple dietary customs – filling up on fruit and veg, steamed rice and unprocessed meats, while shunning rich, creamy sauces and super-sized portions. So although you may ma eat like a king in Saigon, you won’t end up looking like Henry VIII after your visit.

my wish list of activities. In short, paradise. Well, as it so happens, Paradise was just across the desert. Thanks to the recently opened Anantara resorts inAbuDhabi—theQasrAlSarabandtheDesertIslands Resort and Spa — three hours drive from Dubai to Qasr Al Sarab and a short flight to Sir Bani Yas for the Desert Sands Resort and Spa. The Anantara chain is known for their luxurious resorts and beautiful locations, so I was happy to see that two were within a stone’s throw of my home in Dubai. Destination set? Check. As I began my drive to The Qasr Al Sarab resort in the Liwa desert, my driver warned me it was a long journey so I should just relax, sit back and enjoy the ride. Although I believed him, in my mind I wondered how long could it really be when it was just outside Abu Dhabi? The journey was indeed long but it was a scenic route with changing landscapes and long stretches of desert. Despite the long stretches of sand, there are

a few things to see along the route if you travel tra before nightfall, including the car museum, which one may ma not know existed before taking the drive. It was a wonderful wa to start my mini holiday. way holida In my solitude, I had time to clear my head and de-stress before arriving at my destination. Ha Having arrived in the evening, just as dusk gave ga way wa to night, I was treated to a beautiful visage of a surreal quality when my car turned into the long entryway quality, entrywa of the Qasr Al Sarab, a 212-room citadel awash in amber lighting from the lamps lighting the path along the way. wa The resort, opened by the Anantara Group last NovemNo ber is located on the fringe of the Empty Quarter, ber, er an er, endless sea of sloping sand across the southern part of the Arabian desert, with dunes extending as far as Saudi Arabia and Yemen. There was a slight hiccup in the check-in check process with the wrong room appointment but it was soon cleared up and I was delivered to my one bedroom villa door. door Upon entering the villa, one is taken in by the sheer size of it and the beauty of the private plunge pool, garden and the desert dunes just beyond them. The sounds of the night were in full swing, as crickets chirped and winds blew creating pleasant ripples in the pool’s water. er er. The bedroom offered off the inhabitant two closets (surely a woman designed this), a king-sized bed built of sturdy wood and just the right mattress density that begged for a siesta to be had, and access to the plunge pool, lounging deck and gardens. ing tube roomy enough for two but the perfect floatation tank for one. The living room, dining room and small stand-alone kitchen, were all well appointed rooms with the cosy comforts of a home. The one bedroom villa is perfect for a small family, family romantic for two and completely sumptuous for a party of one. The resort and its offerings off are a wonderful blend of old-world charm meets modern day da luxuries, a combination hard to beat. Morning came quickly (or perhaps slumber slowly) but it was off to start the day’s da adventure, with an early morning dune drive. The drives are one of the most popular excursions of the resort, where you get to test your inner resolve and nausea level against the sands of time. A 4x4 takes the guests out and tackles the sand dunes navigating na turns, various dune sizes, salt flats, vegetation, small creatures and the like. There are two types of drives, hard and soft. Translation? Hard being the more daring take to the dunes approach, becoming airborne at certain intervals and tackling very sharp inclines; a soft drive is a more calm ride with some thrills but your buns and back will not suffer suff quite as much. A note of caution: it is best not to eat prior to either drive as one may ma feel queasy or worse during the course of the ride. For those feeling especially motivated and

not minding the early morning hour, hour there is the 5am desert walk. Here, guests get to be one with nature on a guided walk across the sand dunes. The walk allows you to see up close and personal the vegetation, the animals, the varying sand colours and the difference diff underfoot of the varying sand densities. The camel trek across the dunes is another popular excursion at Qasr Al Sarab, where from the back of your camel, one is perfectly situated

to take in the desert valley views and sunsets. Thefirststepastheysay sa isaloo-looorinthiscase say a lurch forward, as camels get up from the back legs first then front.
