Castleton Spartan’s Hockey 2010-11

President's Messaage President David Wolk

A Message from the President of

Office of the President November 2010 Welcome to another stellar season of Spartan hockey and our second season at our newly refurbished Spartan Arena. Please check out our new Pro Shop, interior renovations, the improvements to the mezzanine area overlooking the ice, and the special new Blue Line Club seating in the bleachers. Scott Dikeman and Dave Manfredi at the Arena, along with a number of part-time staff members, have done a great job sprucing up and maintaining a very high quality facility, available not only to our women’s and men’s hockey programs, but also to Castleton students and staff and folks throughout the greater Rutland region. I remain especially proud of our students, coaches, athletic administrators, staff members and our volunteer Blue Line Club, all of whom are doing it right. Together, this is one incredible team. Our student athletes have contributed in many impressive ways to the Rutland area, including year-round work as mentors in the schools and as volunteers in the Learn-to-Skate programs, storm cleanup, senior citizen assistance and a myriad of other outstanding community service projects. You have before you a uniquely outstanding group of young men who are highlighted and showcased on these pages, on the ice and in our community. Head Coach Alex Todd has done a spectacular job growing this program, attracting and educating well rounded gentlemen who know that at Castleton, a non-scholarship Division III college, student comes before athlete. Our shining example is what you have in your hands: a program that comes to life through the graphic design and creativity of our players. I want to more specifically mention Lindsey Gullett, who has shown his impressive leadership in many ways on and off the ice. Our athletes have a much higher overall grade point average, retention rate and graduation rate than the general student population. They volunteer countless hours in the community. Yes, unlike most professional athletes, they are role models. We have invested in them because they deserve it, and because they hold the key to our future. Please join me in enjoying another fantastic season of Spartan hockey. Respecfully yours,

David S. Wolk President

New Team. Same Dream.

Season Outlook

ver the past three seasons, the Castleton men’s ice hockey team has been upset by a lower seed in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) East Quarterfinal round at home.

a look into the 2010-11 Season

Headed into the 2010-11 campaign, head coach Alex Todd wants to overcome that trend. “Every year we want to host playoff games,” said Todd. “This year, our top goal is to take advantage of home ice in the playoffs and advance to the semifinals.” In order to reach that goal, Josh Harris and ECAC East All-Conference Honorable Mention Stuart Stefan may have to replicate their scoring output from a season ago. Last winter, Harris led the club in points finishing the season with nine goals and a team-leading 19 assists. Stefan was the main goal scoring threat for Castleton lighting the lamp 16 times while adding

The Spartans will also need some of their younger players on the squad to emerge on the defensive side of the puck. “The team will be young this year, but with our top scoring forwards returning our focus will be defense and helping out our goalies,” said Todd. Alex Todd Head Coach

Spartan Coaching Staff

Union College ‘01 58-57-16, 6th Season Rice Lake, Wisconsin

Coach Alex Todd began his hockey career in Rice Lake, Wisconsin where he learned the game and played until his junior year of high school then he left to play his senior season in Dubuque Iowa, in the USHL. After the USHL coach Todd played four years at Union College in the Division I ECAC Hockey League. Upon graduation coach Todd signed a professional contract with the Fresno Falcons in the West Coast Hockey League, (WCHL, now the ECHL). Coach Todd played for the Falcons from 2001-2003. In his rookie campaign, coach Todd picked up where he left off at Union with a standout rookie season, earning Rookie of the Year honors for the Falcons, as well as being voted onto the league’s All-Rookie Team. The ideal end of his rookie season came when he helped Fresno earn the league’s playoff title and were named Taylor Cup Champions.

19

After two more years as a professional one in the WCHL and one year in the CHL, coach Todd made the decision to hang up his skates, and work on the other side of the bench. Coach Todd’s coaching career began at Utica College in Utica, New York (ECAC West NCAA D-III). After a successful first year in college hockey as a coach in which Utica won the ECAC West Title in 2004-05, he began working with USA hockey and its summer development programs. To date, coach Todd has assisted with USA hockey player development camps in the Central States District, and was the camp director for the 2006 Mid America Bantam Camp. Coach Todd has also been involved with the USA Hockey national festivals coaching at each level, the 14’s, 15’s, 16’s and 17’s for the past six years. In the summer of 2005, coach Todd was named head coach at Castleton, inheriting a team that had gone 0-44 in its two seasons of existence. In coach Todd’s second season, the team continued their improvement with a final record of 17-6-4 (most wins in program history), getting the school’s first ever national ranking as high as #8 in the country. The 200708 team started slow but finished on a program record 10-game unbeaten streak and earned its first ever home

playoff game. The 2008-09 season marked the final season of coach Todd’s first full recruiting class. The Spartans made a successful trip to Germany and Austria for preseason, earning a 3-1 mark overseas. The Spartans finished the year with a 159-2 record hosting an ECAC East Quarterfinal game for the second year in a row. Coach Todd’s first five years have been marked by many firsts for Castleton and the men’s hockey program including a home record of 33-26-8 over the last five years and an overall record of 58-57-16 in the same time. However, the stats that coach Todd is most proud of is his team’s accomplishments off the ice which include leading the ECAC East in all Academic team selections for the last four years (9, 13, 14, and 10 respectively), a team average GPA of 3.35, and having his players raise and donate over $14,000, and countless volunteer hours to local charities in the Castleton and Rutland communities. Heading into the 2010-11 season coach Todd is looking to improve again, with a large and talented freshmen class ready to take Castleton to the next level and a core of returners, the Spartans will be very competitive in the ECAC East and look to establish themselves further in the league playoffs and maintain their presence on the national stage. Coach Todd lives in Rutland with his wife Ali and their two dogs Bauer and Delaney.

Castleton Spartan’s Hockey 2010-11

With a combined total of just eight juniors and seniors, this youthful team kicked off the ‘09-‘10 campaign at home on November 20th versus the Saint Anselm Hawks. This was the first game played by the men’s hockey team under the new arena title, Spartan Arena. The Spartans hosted the annual Rutland Herald Invitational with participating teams being the defending national champion, Neumann Knights as well as the Tufts Jumbos and Becker College Hawks. The Spartans found themselves in the finals, only to come up short against the sound play of goaltender Scott Barchard and the Jumbos from Tufts. Sophomore forward Lindsey Gullett was named to the all-tournament team with 5 points (2 g, 3 a) in the two games on the weekend. The Spartans proved to show their youth and inexperience during the 2009 portion of their schedule as they stumbled to a 1-5-2 record heading into the Christmas break. However an inspirational come from behind tie at the Aud in Utica seemed to give the team a push in the right direction. From then on, the team went 8-2-4 into February to cruise their way up the standings in a dog fight for second place. During this 14 game run, as the team had their success, individuals on the team were being recognized as well. On January 11th, Artie Hollinger was named the ECAC East goalie of the week. During that week, Hollinger was 2-0 including his first career college shutout versus the Wesleyan Cardinals.

The following week, Ben Schoeneberger was named the ECAC East rookie of the week. Ben recorded three points (2 g, 1 a) in three games as the Spartans tied Geneseo and beat UMassBoston and Babson on the road. February 8th saw the ECAC East rookie of the week awarded to Dan Bell and the ECAC East player of the week go to Kirk Bolduc. During the weekend, these two players helped lead Castleton to 8-1 and 9-1 victories over Southern Maine and University of New England. The team battled down the stretch and found themselves as the third seed heading into the ECAC East playoffs. On February 27th, the Spartans faced off with the visiting New England College Pilgrims. Although Castleton was the higher seed, they had only tied their opponents earlier in the season. The game turned out to be a disappointing one as Spartan fans went home having seen their last hockey game of the season.

sophomores Lindsey Gullett, Tyler Atkins, and Cody Ayers. The team also received Castleton’s Presidents trophy for having the highest team grade point average amongst all other Castleton winter sport teams. The men’s hockey have now received this award for two consecutive seasons and still remain the only male team to have won the award. Overall, the team finished 9-12-5 with a conference record of 7-9-3. The Spartans were grateful for all the support they received over the course of the year and look forward to returning to the ice for next season.

Despite the season coming to an end, the Spartans had a few individuals recognized for the year end awards. Artie Hollinger was named to the conferences second team ballot as juniors Stuart Stefan and Omar Pacha were given honorable mentions. The Spartans continued their success in the classroom for another season as they landed ten members on the ECAC East all-academic team. Receiving these honors last season were seniors Kirk Bolduc, Nick Westcott, and Evan Romeo; juniors Jonathan Lafrance, Omar Pacha, and Stuart Stefan; as well as New Team. Same Dream.

T

he Castleton men’s hockey team have always prided themselves on their level of physical fitness. They believe that in order to be successful, you must first be willing to commit yourself off the ice to give yourself a chance to win on the ice. The combination of Dr. Lara Carlson from 2005-2008 and Al Jean from 2009 to present have instilled a work ethic into the Castleton Spartan hockey players over the years that have helped them build a high level of fitness throughout the off-season and maintain it during the season. The numbers that are listed on the your left reflect the efforts of some of the top athletes that have been apart of the Castleton men’s hockey program. The work ethic that is required to be at the top of each of these categories is something that a Castleton hockey player can take pride in and gives others a goal that they continue to work towards each and every season.

Orthopaedic Care THE PRACTICE OF

Sports Medicine Sports injury management, rehab and training are a focus at the Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic. At both our main campus and our adjunct facility, the Killington Medical Clinic, we design and deliver programs that make use of the most advanced sports medicine techniques in practice today— programs that train the entire body, rather than just treat the injury. Through our leading-edge iSPORT program and our association with the Rutland Regional Medical Center, the VOC has brought injured, world-class athletes, Olympians and active sports enthusiasts back to top performance. Visit our Patient Education section on the web at vermontorthoclinic.org.

We Are... SPARTANS! Up against the rock ledge behind the baseball backstop is a 10ton monolith of Vermont Verde Antique, a green serpentine marble, with a Spartan head carved on its face and a message in Ancient Greek. The new symbol of Spartan Pride was a gift from President Dave Wolk in honor of his wife, Dr. Diane Wolk. In a message to coaches and student-athletes, President Wolk wrote, “You can now establish your own new traditions that will be so special for your teams and for you. Spartan Pride: it’s the gift that keeps on giving, and I’m honored to share it with you.” - October 9th, 2010

Castleton Spartan’s Hockey 2010-11

Academic Excellence he Castleton men’s hockey team does not only take great pride in their efforts on the ice, but also for their efforts in the classroom. Since Coach Alex Todd came to Castleton just over five years ago, the Spartans have been among the conference leaders in ECAC East All-Academic team representatives with 46 award winners in the past four seasons alone. Our feature graduates from 2010 are examples of this dedication to the team’s studies as they were standouts among their classmates for their department of study.

Shown above are Castleton Men’s Hockey graduates of 2010; from left to right Kirk Bolduc (06-10), Eric Curtis (06-10), Jeff Alexander (06-09), Nick Westcott (06-10), and Evan Romeo (06-10) with the men’s hockey athletic trainer, Josh Englebretson.

The Presidents Trophy is an award that is presented by Castleton President, David Wolk, at the conclusion of the fall, winter and spring sport seasons. The award is given to the Spartan athletic team who maintained the highest overall team grade point average during the play of their competitive season. In 2010, the team repeated this feat by achieving a 3.28 grade point average to top all winter sports teams once again. Shown below are the 2010 Castleton men’s hockey seniors receiving the award from President David Wolk.

Community Service

Spartans in the Community Involvement in the Community

O

ver the last five years, the Castleton men’s hockey team has raised and donated over $14000 to local clubs and charities in the town of Castleton and the greater Rutland area. Along with this, the team has donated countless hours of their time to help a variety of different clubs and organizations. A few of the recipients of the team’s efforts have been: Calrendon Elementary School, Castleton Elementary School, EEE Head Start in Rutland, Lothrop Elementary in Pittsford, Boys and Girls Club of Rutland, United Way of Rutland, Rutland Regional Field House, Rutland Amateur Hockey Association, Cutting Edge Women’s Hockey, Rutland City Storm Clean Up, Green Mountain Senior Games, Paramount Theater, Castleton Public Library, Lion’s Club Auction, Castleton Career Fair, and Camp Kehoe Spring Cleanup. Aside from their efforts on the ice and in the classroom, the team’s actions in being involved in the community is something the team feels is equally important. Coach Todd and the team believe that community service is important to enable themselves to give back to the area that has supported them so well for the first 7 years of their existence. The men’s hockey team is very actively involved in the RAHA (Rutland Amateur Hockey Association) as well as the Learn-to-Skate program. In 2005, the team started what is now the annual Skate-a-Thon in order to raise money to

make a charitable donation. During the first skate-a-thon, the team raised $8000 to go towards the hurricane Katrina relief fund. From 2006 to 2009, the team raised and donated a combined $5500 towards the Rutland Learn-to-Skate program and the Rutland Regional Field House. In 2010, due to the college’s purchasing of the Field House, Castleton State College saw the importance of the Learn-to-Skate program and decided to fund it themselves. The hockey team decided to take the funds that they had annually donated to the LTS program and created a scholarship to help support a selected youth hockey player in the RAHA program who might not otherwise be able to afford to play the game.

Castleton State College - Relay For Life The Castleton men’s hockey team participated in the college’s Relay for Life last spring. The team was required to perform a 12 hour relay where they would walk a path through the Castleton campus between 4 pm and 4 am. The team went with a superhero theme where they were to help fight cancer. The designated walkers wore superhero capes that had names of personal friends or family of the team who have been affected by cancer written on them in their memory. Organizer of the team, Lindsey Gullett said, “the lighting of the luminaries was pretty overwhelming to see. To visually see something that represents the number of people who have been affected by cancer, just from the people who were at the event, was truly special. It’s an easy motivator to make you continue on in your relay throughout the late hours of the night.” Overall, the 16 members of the men’s hockey team raised $2000 for cancer research.
