Office of the President October 2011 Welcome to another stellar season of Spartan hockey and our third season at our newly refurbished Spartan Arena. Please check out our Pro Shop, interior renovations, and the improvements to the mezzanine area overlooking the ice, Including our new state of the art fitness center and amenities. Steve Wolf, Spartan Arena Director, and his able assistants Dave Manfredi and Mike Anderson at the Arena, along with a number of part-time staff members, have done a great job sprucing up and maintaining a very high quality facility, available not only to our women’s and men’s hockey programs, but also to Castleton students and staff and our extended family throughout the Rutland region.

President David Wolk

A Message from the President of

I remain especially proud of our students, coaches, athletic administrators, staff members and our volunteer Blue Line Club, all of whom are doing it right. Fred and Jennifer Bagley lead an amazing BLC group,, some of whom devote an almost full-time commitment to this important endeavor. Together, this is one incredible team. Our student athletes have contributed in many impressive ways to the Rutland area, including year-round work as mentors in the schools and as volunteers in the Learn-to-Skate programs, storm cleanup, senior citizen assistance and a myriad of other outstanding service projects.

Our athletes have a much higher overall grade point average, retention rate and graduation rate than the general student population. They volunteer countless hours in the community. Yes, unlike most professional athletes, they are role models. We have invested in them because they deserve it, and because they hold the key to our future. Please join me in enjoying another fantastic season of Spartan hockey. Respecfully yours,

David S. Wolk President

www.castleton.edu/athletics/mhockey

You have before you a uniquely outstanding group of young men who are highlighted and showcased on these pages, on the ice and in our community. Head Coach Alex Todd has done a spectacular job growing this program, attracting and educating well rounded gentlemen who know that at Castleton, a non-scholarship Division III college, student comes before athlete. Our shining example is what you have in your hands: a program that comes to life through the graphic design and creativity of our players. I want to more specifically mention Lindsey Gullett, who has shown his impressive leadership in many ways on and off the ice. I may not let him graduate.

he Castleton men’s ice hockey program rose to new heights during the 2010-11 season and looks to build on that success as the team prepares for the upcoming year. Last season the Spartans found themselves ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation before finishing with a program-record 22 victories and an overall mark of 22-4-1. The nation’s ninth-ranked team also concluded the season with a school-record 15-game win streak, a perfect 11-0 mark on the road and victories over national powerhouses Norwich and Middlebury. In addition to all the impressive team marks, Castleton was honored with its first AllAmericans in program history. Then sophomore, Josh Harris was named

an ACHA first-team All-America while senior Stuart Stefan was named to the third team. This season the Spartans return nearly their entire roster and head coach Alex Todd has high expectations for his squad. “With the vast majority of our team returning, experience will not be a question mark like it was coming into last year,” said Todd. “If we use that

experience to get better I feel that we should be as good as we were last year.” Todd’s list of returning players begins with Harris, Castleton’s lone returning All-American. The junior was a revelation last year as he finished tied for first in the country in both points per game (1.85) and assists per game (1.26). Harris also scored 16 goals and his production was part of an offense which was the secondhighest scoring in nation, averaging 4.56 goals per game. In addition to his All-American status, Harris also toted home the New England Hockey Writers’ Player of the Year Award as well as ECAC East Player of the Year. Hoping to help Harris on offense this season are juniors Justin Alonzo and Dan Bell, as well as seniors Cody Ayers, Lindsey Gullett and a multitude of returners. Alonzo served as one of Harris’ linemates last year and finished third on the team in scoring with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 total points. Bell was fourth on the team with nine goals and dished out 14 assists as well. Ayers scored eight times and had six assists while Gullett, a two-year captain, brings leadership and versatility, with his ability to play two-way hockey. With all of the offensive firepower, it may seem that the Spartans simply out-score their opponents. But, with a stifling defensive unit which allowed just 2.26 goals per game, good for sixth in the country a season ago, Castleton can also win the lowscoring affair. The defense is led by its upperclassmen, including senior Tyler Atkins who dished out 16 assists a year ago and has developed into one of the most complete defensemen in the conference. Juniors Brad Barber and Brett Zeggil also return and were

Dan Bell, Jr. Forward 10/11: 9 g - 14 a - 23 pts

part of a penalty-kill unit which was sixth best in the nation, allowing just 20 goals in 142 opportunities (.859). Castleton split goalie duties between Erick Cinotti and Seth McNary last year and each performed well, finishing with at least ten victories apiece and a save percentage of over .900. Cinotti saw action in 16 contests, finishing with a goalsagainst-average (GAA) of 2.00 and a .919 save percentage last year en route to an All-New England honor. McNary was tough in goal as well, posting a .904 save percentage in 13 games with a 2.40 GAA.

In addition to the wealth of returners, the Spartans also welcome five newcomers into the fold. Headlining the group are freshmen Brian Greene and Ryan Frost. Greene comes

Looking at his overall roster, Todd sees a squad which has had success but is looking to take the next step.

Brett Zeggil, Jr. Forward Assistant Captain

“When you get denied a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament (the Spartans narrowly missed an at-large bid last season) the message is clear that we have to get better,” said Todd. “The addition of five freshmen who have the ability to contribute right away gives us plenty of depth, and our improved schedule should help our strength of schedule as well. With heath and a little luck we should be a

very good team this year.” The Castleton schedule will look vastly different this season as the ECAC East and NESCAC will no longer participate in a crossover contests. The Spartans have added a road contest with Plattsburgh State (January 6) and a trip to Plattsburgh’s Cardinal Classic where they will take on Utica in the opener December 30.

25

Coach Alex Todd began his hockey career in Rice Lake, Wisc. and played until his junior year of high school, when he left to play his senior season in Dubuque Iowa, in the USHL. After the USHL coach Todd played four years at Union College in the Division I ECAC Hockey League. Upon graduation, coach Todd signed a professional contract with the Fresno Falcons in the West Coast Hockey League, (WCHL, now the ECHL) and played for them from 20012003. In his rookie campaign Todd picked up where he left off at Union with a stand out rookie season, earning Rookie of the Year honors for the Falcons, as well as being voted onto the league’s “All Rookie Team”. The ideal end of his rookie season came when the Fresno Falcons earned the league’s playoff title and where named Taylor Cup Champions. After two more years as a professional one in the WCHL and one year in the CHL, coach Todd made the decision to hang up his skates, and work on the other side of the bench. His coaching career began at Utica College in Utica, New York (ECAC West NCAA D-III). After a successful first year in college hockey as a coach, Todd began working with USA hockey and its summer development programs. To date, he has assisted with USA hockey player development camps in the Central States District, and the Mid America Bantam Camp. Coach Todd has also been involved with the USA Hockey national festivals coaching at

each level, the 14’s, 15’s, 16’s and 17’s for the last eight years. Coach Todd’s six-year tenure has been marked by many firsts for the Castleton men’s hockey program, beginning with 40-216 record at home over the last five years and an overall mark of 86-42-14 during the same five-year span. Last season the team reached new heights and raised the bar for future squads. The Spartans finished with school-record 22 victories and an overall record of 22-41, highlighted by an astounding 11-0-0 mark on the road. When the dust settled on the season, Todd was named ECAC East Coach of the year, and had the distinction of coaching the first ACHA All-Americans in Castleton men’s hockey history. Despite the considerable success on the ice, the numbers that coach Todd is most proud of are his team’s accomplishments off the ice. The Spartans have led ECAC East in All-Academic Team selections for three of

2011-12

the last five years, own a team average GPA of 3.40, and are the three-time winners of the President’s Cup for the highest GPA of any Castleton winter sport team. Coach Todd and his players are also very involved in the local community and to date they have raised and donated over $18,000 and countless volunteer hours to local charities in the Castleton and Rutland community. Heading into the 2011-12 season coach Todd is looking to improve on last year’s success, by going further in the league playoffs and maintaining the team’s presence on the national stage. Coach Todd lives in Rutland with his wife Ali, daughter Abigail and their two dogs Bauer and Delaney.

T

he 2010-11 season for the Castleton Spartans was a year that stamped their name among the top contenders in division III hockey. It was a year that saw the Spartans ride an abundance of youth, along with a couple of hot hands and timely scoring, to find themselves among the USCHO’s top 15 in the country on a weekly basis. However, all of this momentum that built up throughout their storybook season came to a screeching halt on March 4, 2011 as the Spartans fell in the ECAC East conference semifinals. It all started for the Green and White during the second last weekend of November when the Spartans embarked on a road trip to Saint Anselm College and New England College - a road trip the team had never came away from with more than one point to their name. It was an obstacle that even the best of the Spartan teams in the past could never overcome. The Spartans were a combined 0-11-5 in 16 games versus these two New Hampshire rivals.

with under a minute to go in the extra frame. The guys jumped on a bus the following day and headed to Norwich for a non-conference matchup with their in-state rivals. After trailing by a goal on two separate occasions, the Spartans showed their resilience and battled back with two 3rd period power play markers from Josh Harris and Justin Alonzo to force overtime for a second straight evening. Nick Lazorko then picked the perfect time to score his first college goal as he took a feed from Lindsey Gullett behind the net and got the puck up and over Norwich goalie, Alex Dubois, to send the Spartans into the Christmas break at 6-2-0. The Castleton men’s hockey team sat on these wins over the break and used them as more fuel for their fire. As the Spartans got back to their winning ways in the month of January, a new trend was slowly building momentum among Castleton fans everywhere. The Fist Pump Frenzy emerged as Spartan fans watched their team rattle off 11 straight wins in the month of January, propelling the team to number three in the national rankings. Sitting on an 18-2-1 record, Norwich was slated to return to Rutland for a conference tilt to ultimately determine the final conference standings heading into the playoffs. With the Fist Pump Frenzy creating energy with the local fans, The Cadets abruptly spoiled the party at the Spartan Arena as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period. This was a lead that the Spartans could not come back from as they fell 5-2 to the number four nationally ranked Cadets.

Senior Captain - Stuart Stefan Third Team All-American First Team All-Conference

The Spartans continued to roll from there. They hosted their annual Rutland Herald Invitational the following weekend. Again, this was a tournament that they had never won and settled for 2nd place in each of the three previous years. The team used their early season momentum and cruised to 5-1 and 7-1 wins en route to their first RHI championship. At 4-0, Castleton started turning some heads and other teams began to take note. Colby and Bowdoin came to Rutland for a conferenceinterlocking weekend and stole two wins out of the Spartan Arena to make them 4-2. The final weekend before Christmas break saw the Skidmore Thoroughbreds come to town for a Friday night bout with the Spartans. The home team erased an early two-goal deficit and came away with a 5-4 overtime victory on the power of senior captain, Stuart Stefan’s breakaway goal

The fifth seeded Babson Beavers were the Spartans’ next opponent. The two clubs met earlier in the season and saw the Spartans skate to a 6-1 win. However, Coach Jamie Rice and the Beavers had given the Spartans trouble in the past and this game proved to be no different. Castleton fired shot after shot at Babson goalie, Zeke Testa, but couldn’t find a way to solve him. By the end of the first period, the Spartans trailed 2-0. Babson notched a short handed goal just five minutes into the second before a late period resurgence saw Castleton score two goals in forty-two seconds to make it 3-2 after two periods. The Spartans came out firing in the third, but a bounce the wrong way against them took the wind out of their sails as the Beavers stretched their lead to 4-2. First team all-American, Josh Harris, made it 4-3 on the power play, but that was as

close as the team from Castleton would come. As a team, the guys were left with virtually nothing to show for their efforts. Individually, the Spartans were well represented as sophomore forward Josh Harris was recognized for his phenomenal season. Harris was named firstteam all-American, first-team all-conference, ECAC East player of the year, New England college hockey Div II/III player of the year, the Joe Concannon award winner as the top American born player in New England, while leading the country in points per game and assists. Senior captain, Stuart Stefan, received third-team all-American, first-team all-conference, Div II/III New England college hockey all-star honors, while finishing second in the country in power play goals. Freshman goalie, Erick Cinotti was lauded with secondteam all-conference honors and Div II/III New England college hockey all-star recognition, while Coach Alex Todd received the ECACEast Coach of the year as well as New England college hockey Div II/III Coach of the year awards. The Spartans placed 10 players on the conference all-academic team in Jonathan Lafrance, Stuart Stefan, Tyler Atkins, Cody Ayers, Lindsey Gullett, Seth McNary, Justin Alonzo, Brad Barber, Dan Bell, and Brett Zeggil, and also won the Presidents Trophy for the third year in a row with a team GPA of 3.40. The team’s story book season had come to an end. Coach Todd and the Spartans finished 22-4-1 overall, were the second highest scoring team in the country at 4.56 goals/game, had the fourth best power play in the country clicking at 29.9%, and had the fewest amount of losses as any team in the nation. With the loss of graduating captain Stuart Stefan and defenseman Jonathan Lafrance, the 2011-12 version of the Spartans will look awfully familiar to the Castleton hockey faithful as the season kicks off on November 4th at home against the University of New England Nor’easters.

However, this year told a different story. The Spartans were more prepared mentally and physically than they had ever been and stormed their way to 2-1 and 4-2 victories to start the season 2-0 for the first time in eight seasons.

The Spartans rebounded from the loss with three more wins and finished the regular season at 22-3-1, the most wins ever in the school’s history. Finishing as the second seed in the conference, they were matched up against the seventh seed, New England College Pilgrims. Winning in the playoffs was something that had eluded the Spartans in previous seasons and they knew that this year had to be different. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, Coach Todd’s team fired off five straight goals to advance to the ECAC East semi-finals for the first time since 2007.

he Castleton men’s hockey team have always prided themselves on their level of physical fitness. They believe that in order to be successful, you must first be willing to commit yourself off the ice to give yourself a chance to win on the ice. The combination of Dr. Lara Carlson from 2005-2008 and Al Jean from 2009 to present have instilled a work ethic into the Castleton Spartan hockey players over the years that have helped them build a high level of fitness throughout the off-season and maintain it during the season. The numbers that are listed on the your left reflect the efforts of some of the top athletes that have been a part of the Castleton men’s hockey program. The work ethic that is required to be at the top of each of these categories is something that a Castleton hockey player can take pride in and gives others a goal that they continue to work towards each and every season.

T

he Castleton men’s hockey team does not only take great pride in their efforts on the ice, but also for their efforts in the classroom. Since Coach Alex Todd came to Castleton just over five years ago, the Spartans have been among the conference leaders in ECAC East All-Academic team representatives with 46 award winners in the past four seasons alone. Our feature graduates from 2011 are examples of this dedication to the team’s studies as they were standouts among their classmates for their department of study.

The Castleton men’s hockey team have featured some of the top Castleton studentathletes on campus over the previous seasons. They continue to set high expectations for their level of study and take pride in their achievements so far.

(May 6, 2011) - CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Commissioner of the ECAC Rudy Keeling announced today the ECAC Men’s East All-Academic team for the 2010-11 season. This marks the tenth year that the conference has named an all-academic team. A total of 91 student athletes representing all ten of the ECAC East teams earned this honor based on outstanding performance in the classroom. To be named to the all-academic team, the student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and have competed in at least one-half of his team’s contests during the current season (a goaltender must have played at least 33 percent of his team’s minutes). Left: Lindsey Gullett (Communications), Dan Bell (Business Administration), and Brett Zeggil (History and Political Science) pose with President Wolk at the annual Presidents dinner. Students who achieve a 4.0 grade point average in the fall semester are invited to the annual supper where students are acknowledged for their accomplishments in the classroom.

The Presidents Trophy is an award that is presented by Castleton President, David Wolk, at the conclusion of the fall, winter and spring sport seasons. The award is given to the Spartan athletic team who maintained the highest overall team grade point average during the play of their competitive season. In 2009, the men’s hockey team made history by becoming the first male sports team in Castleton history to receive this award with an overall team grade point average of 3.35. In 2010, the team repeated this feat by achieving a 3.28 grade point average to top all winter sports teams once again. Then in 2011, the team made it three in a row by recording a team grade point average of 3.40. Shown below is Senior captain Stuart Stefan receiving the Presidents Trophy from President Wolk.

The men’s hockey team is very actively involved in the RAHA (Rutland Amateur Hockey Association) as well as the Learn-to-Skate program. In 2005, the team started what is now the annual Skate-a-Thon in order to raise money to make a charitable donation.

During the first skate-a-thon, the team raised $8000 to go towards the hurricane Katrina relief fund. From 2006 to 2009, the team raised and donated a combined $5500 towards the Rutland Learn-to-Skate program Shown above are Castleton men’s hockey Castleton Elementary school mentors of 2010-11. Senior Gift Tradition

Senior Gift Tradition This tradition is something that has built the Spartan hockey program into what it is today. Each year the outgoing seniors give back a little something to help improve the furture teams in years to come. Starting in the 2006-07 season, the Spartans senior class presented the team with a cd player for the locker room, given by Joe Huchko and Rich McKenna. In 2007-08, Matt Link, Travis Martell, and Tyler White donated the Spartans Playoff Shrine. The Playoff Shrine is extremely important to the team as each player places a personal item of signifcance into the shrine prior to the playoffs that will then travel with the team as a reminder for what the team is playing for. The 2008-09 senior class consisting of Jay Seals, Marlin Froese, Andy Brolsma, Craig Richardson, Ryan Bartlett, Jared Lavender, Brandon Heck, Jeff Lazeren, Mike Anderson, Ross Carmichael, and Jeff Swanson donated a set of black Spartan jerseys to the team to be worn during non-conference games. In 2009-10, the graduating class of Nick Westcott, Evan Romeo, Kirk Bolduc, and Eric Curtis gave the team a new glove drier which helps the team dry out their gloves between periods and during road trips. Last season’s grad class of 2010-11, Jonathan Lafrance and Stuart Stefan donated a team iPod to the dressing room so the team would always have a reliable source to play music before and after their games and practices.

www.castleton.edu/athletics/mhockey

This season, the 2012 graduating seniors of Lindsey Gullett, Tyler Atkins, Seth McNary, and Cody Ayers along with 2011 Terry Moran Builders Award recipient, Josh Englebretson, have been working away at making improvements to the team’s locker room. This effort of embracing the team’s history is something that these graduates hope that future Spartans will appreciate as the program nears its 10-year anniversary.

As the Castleton men’s hockey program nears its 10-year anniversary, more players are having success in hockey after their years in a Spartan uniform. Former Spartan captain Jared Lavender (CSC 05-09) is entering his third full season with the Missouri Mavericks of the Central H o c k e y L e a g u e ( C H L ) . During his first two seasons, J a r e d Jared Lavender Missouri Mavericks, CHL amassed 17 points (2 g, 15 a) and 73 penalty minutes in 94 professional contests. The Cleveland Heights, OH native was a member of the Mavericks during their inaugural season in 2010 and played a key role last season as they finished fourth in the Turner Conference.

where he currently plays in Germany for the Crimmitschau Eispiraten in the Bundesliga. During his time with the Ice Bears, Martell quickly became a fan favorite as a hard-nosed defenseman. In two seasons he racked up 198 penalty minutes while chipping in with 6 goals and 44 assists in 113 games. Martell currently sits first all time in defensemen scoring at Castleton. Omar Pacha (CSC 07-10) is entering his second full season of professional hockey. Pacha broke into the professional ranks last season with the Huntsville Havoc of the SPHL collecting 34 points (7 g, 24 a) in 56 games played. His outstanding rookie season was acknowledged with first team All-SPHL honors and All-SPHL rookie team honors. More recently graduated defenseman, Jonathan Lafrance (CSC 07-11), followed Pacha’s similar path as he signed a contract with the Huntsville Havoc of the SPHL for the 201112 season. At the completion of the Spartans playoffs in the spring of 2011, Lafrance joined the Havoc for their final two regular season games and dressed for both of the team’s playoff contests in a best of three series defeat. Huntsville head coach, Randy Murphy, commented in a press release, “Jonathan will be in his first full season as a professional with us. He proved when he came to us late in the year that he can be a steady defenseman who is tough to play against, we are happy to have Jonathan back and look for him to be a solid part of our defensive core this

Last year’s senior captain Stuart Stefan (CSC 07-11), will start the 2011-12 season off also with the Huntsville Havoc of the SPHL. Stefan leaves the Spartans as arguably one of the top players ever to wear a Castleton jersey. The two-time most valuable player currently holds five Castleton scoring records including most goals (54), plus/minus (+45), power play goals (23),

Thank You The Castleton men’s hockey team and staff would like to thank all of their very supportive sponsors. Without your help, the GAMETIME media guide would not have the success that it continues to gain each season. As a graduating senior, I would like to thank the parents of the Spartans’ players as well as all the local businesses that have shown such great support to the production of GAMETIME over the past three seasons. I’ve met many great people through the creation of these media guides and have been fortunate enough to get a first hand look at how much the local community members and businesses truly appreciate and love this team. Thank you!
