A Message From Jordan Jiskra Congratulations on making it to the State Championships! My name is Jordan Jiskra and I was fortunate to play youth and high school hockey on the boys’ teams in Bottineau. When I started playing hockey there were no girls’ teams in North Dakota. If I wanted to play the only choice that I had was to play on the boys’ team. This definitely was not a bad thing; it was a challenge and it ultimately helped me develop into a better hockey player. Growing up, I would say to my parents and grandparents that I wanted to be a rocket scientist and go to school at M.I.T. At the time I don’t think I had any idea what a rocket scientist did; I just really wanted to go to M.I.T. I didn’t go to M.I.T., but I ended up going to school at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, which is not too far away from M.I.T. Not only was I going to get a great education at an Ivy League school, but I was also fortunate to be recruited to play Division I ice hockey there as well. Playing for a Division I hockey program was a dream come true for me. My family did a lot to support this dream that I had put a lot of time into pursuing. In order to meet as many other female players and coaches of women’s teams, I attended girls’ hockey camps in Minnesota in the summers. It was at these camps that I met some women who were on college teams and college coaches and started to get my name out there as someone to watch. While I was at these camps I was told about trying out for the National Development camps in Lake Placid. I went to the tryouts in Minnesota and was picked to represent the Minnesota/ Dakota regions at Lake Placid. I met a lot more college coaches at the development camp and ultimately met Coach Digit Murphy who recruited me to play and still coaches the Brown University Bears women’s ice hockey team that I played on 11 years ago. I worked really hard at the camps and talked to the coaches and college players and learned as much as I could about their colleges or universities. I wanted to play at the next level after high school and I made the commitment to work hard to attain that dream. I have my parents to thank for helping me to reach my dream. If it wasn’t for them encouraging, supporting, and driving me to camps and tournaments in Minnesota, sometimes during blizzards, I would have never met the coaches or players of these colleges. It’s definitely not easy and nothing is ever just going to be given to you, but if you have a dream to play at the next level of hockey and you have the support of your family or friends anything is possible. It is a great time in women’s ice hockey; there are so many more colleges and universities that have a women’s hockey team now than when I went to school that are looking for the next upcoming players and that could be you! Good luck to you all in your State tournament and keep working hard towards your goals and dreams!
