BLACK AND WHITE COMPOSITION Spring 2011 John Fairey

1

My very first designed studio at Texas A&M was with the infamous professor John Fairey. The whole semester was focused around a single word one chose to describe themselves. I chose the word “harmonious”. I chose this because I have always been known amongst my friends as the peace maker, always trying to achieve harmony between others and myself. This is a quality I value in myself so I thought that exploring this concept visually would prove to be very interesting! This project was the first of four to come. All of which were to revolve around the word “harmonious”.

The objective of this project was to create a composition that encompassed the feeling of harmony. The challenge was to do so by only using four basic shapes. We were only allowed to manipulate the scale and form of these shapes.

3

This project was the last of the four project sequence in Professor John Fairey’s class. While still encompassing the essence of the word “harmonious” the objective was to design an urban living environment. This was the first building I have ever designed, and I had of fun doing so. The client, who we called “Madam X” had very specific design specifications. Through these specific suggestions came interesting solutions solved through design. Demands included: no more than 8,000 cubic feet, an open floor plan, water collection and storage and Madam X’s bed must

not be seen from any point in the house while the door is open. This design came about from a series of handmade models. The final model is also all handmade cardboard, paper and various wooden pieces.

AIAS CULTURE CHANGE NURSING HOME designed in collaboaration with - Kendall Clarke Susan Rodiek

7

A close friend of mine, Kendall Clarke, and I worked on this nursing home renovation project together practically all semester. The project, being heavily program based, was like nothing we had designed before. While keeping 45% of the existing building we created comfortable living “clusters to promote socialization amongst residents as well as a home like feel. Located on the next page are the four posters Kendall and I submitted to the competition board at the end of the studio. As a class we all worked very closely together having pin-ups at least once a

week. This clearly benefitted out sophomore level class well, two teams from the studio placed in the competition, one of which took first place!

LASERED BY LINDSAY Summer 2012 personal project

11

In school we have the amazing opportunity to use the laser-cutter. Which is a truly exciting tool! I started making things for fun and giving them as gifts to family members and friends. That summer I decided to sell my designs because I was having so much fun making them. I joined a mem-

ber based studio in Austin when I was living there. Not only are the designs mine but all of the branding and photography was done by myself as well. Also, the blown glass shown in one of these pictures was made by me too.

FALL TRELLIS

designed in collaboaration with - Remote Studio 2012 Fall2012 Lori Ryker

13

As required by the college, in the third year students are to participate in a study away program. I chose to attend the Remote Studio located in Jackson, Wyoming. I chose this program because it gave me the unique opportunity to actually build something I was a part of designing. I love being outside and working with my hands. I love the mountains. And if have an unstoppable passion for working with people, more specifically designing with them. This program was everything I could ever want! It is hard to put into words what an amazing experience this was.

That fall, we designed an entire park. There were four main attractions, each of which represented the seasons, which it what really amazed us about Wyoming, they have four seasons! This first piece in the piece that represents Fall. While seated on the trellis bench, a view is framed of the cottonwood treeline. This aperture accents the changing colors of the leaves throughout fall. We really wanted the users of this park to take a minute to sit and really soak in the beauty that surrounds them.

SUMMER BOARDWALK

designed in collaboaration with - Remote Studio 2012 Fall 2012 Lori Ryker

19

This boardwalk is our interpretation of the summer months in Jackson. The boardwalk was heavily influenced by the curve in the stream of water that flows through the site. We wanted to utilize this, and enhance the experience of this stream. The boardwalk creates a playful space to enjoy the overflow of water that tends to happen in the summer. I considered this project amongst the rest we designed and built to be the one i was most responsible for in designing. We designed and redesigned this one and made a countless amount of models between the six of

us who participated. Concerning my duties more specifically, I was head in charge of communication! Not only is design and build a huge part of the program but coordinating delivieries and getting estimates is too! Before and during construction I developed relationships with our steel, landscape, and timber vendors and coordinated deliveries and received estimates etc. Because of my love for people and making connections, this was really a great job for me.

VESSELS Fall 2012 Lori Ryker

24

The creating of these vessels was one of my favorite parts of the Remote Studio program. I loved it because this is extremely different than anything I had ever done in a studio before. .The first vessel you see here was my first assignment at the Remote Studio. This piece is extremely personal. The assignment was to create a piece using only natural materials found on property. Hand tools were allowed, but absolutely no power tools. This vessel is made from one block of wood found on the property, and various plant pieces harvested in the area. Also, to hold it all together I had to collect

tree sap from trees. That was fun! This piece represents my spirit. On the next page you will find another series of vessels. The next vessel assignment required that we create randomly and in our environment. These were made during our various trips to Utah and in the Wyoming back country, or just in town! Later we were to observe our random vessels and draw conclusions about our design process. Through this I discovered that while designing I am constantly thinking about how my designs will eventually be photographed.

REVERIE VESSEL

designed in collaboaration with - Alyssa Johnston Fall 2012 Lori Ryker

28

This vessel was the last installment in our vessel assignments. This was designed and built by myself, and Alyssa Johnston. In our assigned groups, Lori gave us a few specific guidelines for this design. Our piece was to be permanently installed in the park while only spending 150 dollars. We were also allowed to use whatever we found on the Remote Studio grounds. Also each team was given a word that our piece had to encompass the feeling of. Our word was “reverie. When thinking of reverie we were inspired by the day dream aspect of the word. We wanted to create

something that prospectors could get lost looking at and become somewhat mindless. We were inspired by the landscape and the beautiful lines created where the mountains touched the sky. This was the driving force of our design. We decided to create a wind chime because of their ability to sooth through calming sounds. When sitting in front of the chime and looking towards the mountains in the back, the copper tubing lines up perfectly with the skyline behind it.

NATATORIUM EAST 6TH STREET- AUSTIN designed in collaboaration with - Cyndee Moody

Fall 2013 Mark Odom

30

Senior integrated studio at Texas A&M is take in the first semester of student’s senior year. Students are required to develop a full design, which includes an in depth knowledge of the building’s structural system. Our given program was for a natatorium on 6th street on the east side of interstate 35. Our driving concept for our design was to give each program of the building an indoor and outdoor quality and to let all of these spaces exist harmoniously. While doing so we also were really interested in pushing the boundaries of public and private spaces. Throughout the

project we overlapped public and private areas to create an unusual and alluring crossing of programs. Cyndee and i designed together all semester using many handmade models. All decisions were made together. I am responsible for all of the renderings, diagrams, floor plans and sections. Cyndee produced the structural AutoCAD file, and I was responsible for the exploded structural diagram.

GENERAL STORE

designed in collaboaration with - Yessica Soto Spring 2014 Gregory Luhan

42

This project is still in progress. This is my last semester as an undergraduate and we are doing a really exciting project! In West Liberty Kentucky in 2012 the town was hit by two devastating tornadoes back to back. As a class this semester we are proposing a master plan for rebuilding West Liberty. We are in contact with the locals and they are very supportive of our efforts. Each team of two has a building to design, while making sure all of the programs develop appropriate relationships with each other. Not only are we physically rebuilding this town, but we are also trying to encourage the people to take advantage of their resources. Sorghum is a huge crop in west liberty and there is no place for the people to buy it right now. As a class we have extensively researched what goes

into every step of the sorghum process. In other teams we were to research the making of a product and develop an understanding of how we can make the process of making these products a sustainable effort. As well as how the town could benefit from every part of the process. Right now the information may look a little disjointed but at the end of the semester it will all be published. To the left is a diagram that displays our general program. On the next page are diagrams concerning the Sorghum process. Then are the rest of the documents produced in the desinging of the general store.

Like I said before in teams we each investigated a sorghum related product. Caitlin and I investigated sorghum syrup. We made a public service announcement that disscusses the way the syrup is made and how the waste from each step of the process gets used in some way. The diagram to the left, I created, and it was the base of our video assignment. Located below is the logo I designed for the sorghum syrup.

GRAPHIC DESIGN Spring 2014 Gavin Braman

50

I currently taking a graphic design class. While I thought I knew all Illustrator and InDesign I find that I am learning something new everday! These are the only two projects we have done this far. Next we are doing a branding project, which I am really excited about!

52

LETTER FORM ICON AND PATTERN

This project was the first in my first graphic design class. The assignment was to first create an “icon using only one letter form. Then to create a black and white pattern using this icon, and then a colored version of the pattern.

Here are some examples of various photography work of mine. I have been taking pictures since high school when I got my first DSLR camera. These images include pictures from trips, commissioned photo shoots and some random shots from my day to day life. It is a hobby I am passionate about. I find that I really love taking pictures of children and I love to photograph my dog, Liam. I think I enjoy photographing them the most because behind the lens they are the most genuine. They do not pay attention to the fact that I am taking their photograph, and that makes for better captures.
