Environmental Issues in Tibet:
DO: Conserve water:
Don’t let the faucet run while you are washing or cooking. Don’t leave water running when it is not in use. Promptly repair any leaks.
DO: Conserve electricity in your home:
Don’t leave the lights on when they are not needed.
Unplug appliances in between use.
Buy energy efficient electrical equipment.
Rapid glacial melt; release of Green House Gases
Large-scale deforestation; consequent soil erosion & flooding
Unchecked mining (gold, chromium, copper, etc.)
Improper disposal of nuclear waste; cancer-causing contaminations of water and soil
Damming of headwaters of the Yangtze, Mekong, Salween, and Brahmaputra rivers
Grassland desertification, contraction of wetlands and drying of lakes
Loss of biodiversity

DON’T: Throw your garbage on the ground:
DON’T: Burn your garbage. It’s illegal!
Littering is harmful for many reasons:
Plastic and foil materials such as bottles, bags, wrappers, and caps DO NOT BIODEGRADE over time. Garbage materials contain chemicals that leach into the air and groundwater, harming human health.
DO: Take your garbage to a designated dumpster site, or sign up for curbside collection: Contact your local government to find out where you can take your waste for proper disposal or to determine if your city has door-to-door collection service available.
When you burn garbage, harmful pollutants are released into the air. Plastic materials (such as water bottles, chip and biscuit wrappers, and plastic bags) and aluminum release dioxins when burned. These very harmful chemicals transfer from the air into water, eventually polluting the food chain via bioaccumulation by plants and animals. Dioxins have been linked to many negative human health effects. Dioxins can damage fetal health, interfere with cell development, and cause cancer. Not to mention, burning trash is illegal in India!
Burning garbage = Bad for Air Quality, Bad for Health
DO: Reduce the amount of garbage you produce:
Reuse plastic water bottles.
Reuse plastic and foil wrappers and bags.
Contact your local government about recycling opportunities in your city.
Be aware of packaging and the waste that it creates. Reduce where possible.
