T

he Lake Houston region consists of several growing communities. From golf courses to country living and from upscale mixed-use developments to signature shopping, the Lake Houston Area has it all. But when someone says they live in the Lake Houston Area, what does that mean, exactly? Located in the northeast quadrant of the Houston metropolitan area, just 21 miles from downtown Houston on Highway 59, the Lake Houston Area includes Atascocita, Humble, Kingwood, Summer Creek and portions of East Montgomery County, all of which are currently experiencing robust population and economic growth. Current population of the entire area is 250,000. With the recreation of Lake Houston and the San Jacinto River, the proximity of Bush Intercontinental Airport and the Port of Houston, and the quality of its many subdivisions, the area has proven to be a strong attraction to newcomers. Abundant health care and exemplary schools add to the appeal while developments like Kingwood Parc, Kings Creek, Generation Park and Grand Texas Theme Park offer promise for years to come.

ATASCOCITA (77346) Population - 56,147 Rush hour drive to Downtown - 40 minutes Most of the individual subdivisions in Atascocita feature their own parks, swimming pools, tennis courts, and easy access to recreational facilities. Additionally, area residents can enjoy two recreational facilities. Located on more than 120 acres, the Lindsay Lyons Park/Sports Center features a playground and barbecue pavilion, in addition to numerous DWKOHWLF ¿HOGV Bordering Atascocita on the east, Lake Houston plays a vital role in the area’s recreational offerings. Summer Creek is the newest community in the Lake Houston Area and offers illustrious housing options, a plethora of shopping and restaurant options, numerous places of worship, quality education choices and a growing array of medical and dental offices. It’s no wonder this booming community at Beltway 8 and West Lake Houston Parkway has become one of the top communities in Houston. Summerwood is home to a 150-acre nature preserve and 17 acres of lakes. Parks, playgrounds, paved trails and picnic areas spread through the community. Fall Creek residents enjoy the natural grandeur of the Golf Club of Houston, home of the Shell Houston Open, and a broad spectrum of amenities, from hikeand-bike trails and catch-and-release fishing to a resort-style aquatic center, greenbelts with walking trails and tennis courts. The Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to assist with professional developments in all of these outstanding communities!

reation and implementation of a Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program is one of the Lake Houston Economic Development Partnership’s most important endeavors. A BRE program is important because it is the most effective and simplest means of creating new jobs through expansion and retention of local businesses. It can also be the easiest

and most effective means of attracting new industries and jobs to the Lake Houston Area as a result of positive word of mouth from existing businesses. This article is designed to help those businesses decipher what payroll solution is best for them. You got your business off the ground, grew enough to hire an employee or two, and now, you have to pay them. Do you know what you’re doing? Many new business owners don’t. Even established business owners who’ve done SD\UROO IRU \HDUV PD\ GHFLGH WKH\ QHHG WR ¿QG D PRUH HI¿FLHQW RU FRVW HIIHFWLYH V\VWHP /XFN\ IRU \RX WKHUH DUH D variety of payroll practices that can help you. Your payroll provider should deliver the value and service you need to run your business effectively. Whether you use the do-it-yourself method, work with a CPA, or have a computer software program, you’ll want to make sure you understand the pros and cons of each option.

do it yourself manually One of the cheapest ways to start doing payroll is to do it yourself. There are very few start-up costs, and little personnel and equipment are necessary. You also have full control. 18 | Lake Houston Business Matters

the bad news is – you have full control. You will need to calculate the payroll each pay period; ¿JXUH RXW IHGHUDO VWDWH DQG ORFDO WD[HV DQG SD\ WKHP WR WKH correct governmental entities in time; track voluntary deductions like health insurance and 401(k) contributions; SUHSDUH DQG ¿OH TXDUWHUO\ UHSRUWV DQG SURFHVV : V DW WKH end of the year. It’s also easy to make mistakes, and you’ll need to keep up with any tax law changes to make sure you’re in compliance. For example, do you understand how health care reform affects your business? If not, DIY might not be the best choice for you.

use computer software Depending on how tech savvy you are, you may want to consider using computer software to manage your payroll. There are desktop and online versions available – some that you buy outright and some that cost a small monthly fee per employee or per payroll. Though these systems initially take some time to set up (while you input your employees’ pay information, bonuses, withholding information, etc.), they require less time after start-up and can calculate payroll virtually error-free. After setup, you’ll have 24/7 access to your payroll and the ability to run reports to get a more comprehensive view of your data. Some payroll systems also include the ability to incorporate employee HR information, so you can easily access this information in one place. If you choose a good payroll provider, you should also have access to a dedicated payroll consultant, 401(k) plans and compliance assistance, in addition to the payroll software itself. Some payroll providers have multiple direct deposit options, along with an employee self-service site where employees can review their pay stubs, end-of-year data and company documents anytime. As with most software, there is a learning curve to mastering it; however, once you’re trained, your other staffers

can be taught to input the weekly hours and salary changes so you have backup. Keep in mind you’ll be in charge of computer maintenance and upgrades, which will take care of technical issues and update information such as tax rates and other compliance changes. Some payroll systems offer free upgrades and some require fees, so ask before you buy.
