The art of patterning reaches far beyond the design world. We are surrounded by patterns in our everyday life from the trees of nature to the cells that fill our very own body. The organic patterns of life are the same that I am drawn to graphically, the ones that do not perfectly repeat but rather vary in size and space. The objects within the pattern are their own being, but together they form a concise identity. Patterns do not necessarily have to act as the background to the image; some become a part of the main event in their own subtleties. At times patterns have the ability to deliver emotion and direction within a design in the most secretive form. Patterns that are able to be seemingly unknown. You may not recognize some as being a pattern without putting more thought into what it means to be a pattern. I am greatly interested in how each object within a pattern reacts and interacts with its counterparts. A curved shape that fits perfectly into the dented piece to its right, an abundance of words stack on top of each other to create a texture that isn’t perfectly geometric and repetitive. Repetitive. An interesting word used when discussing patterns. As a lover of patterns I find that I am more drawn to the ones that have repetition but are not necessarily strict repeats. What interests me is repetition in subject matter, objects, and imagery, but not repetitive in space and size creating more of what would be considered a wallpaper type of image in its uniform qualities and dimensions interest me. The organic pattern has the ability to deliver emotion that is unique to the message being sent or the idea being portrayed. Hand drawn hearts multiplying and growing in size around a girls head can show not only an abundance of love, but it shows HER abundance of love. Varying sizes and shapes creates a much more personal message than strictly set hearts in a row stacked on top of each other. A perfect pattern creates a love song to whatever the subject matter may be. The designer is repeating a collected idea, when we see something being repeated it oftentimes translates into an idea of importance to the subject matter. We are drawn to these elements and the way that they are able to add dimension and oftentimes depth to the overall design.

The patterns that I am specifically drawn to have an interesting way of connecting with other elements of design that excites me personally. For example I am greatly intrigued by using collages as a way to pattern. Through the process of collecting, cutting, and pasting, a design can take on an entire new identity that excites the viewer. The other patterns that appear often connect with color blocking and textures, two ideas that I continuously find myself book marking and collecting. I have always found color blocking to hold a strong presence within a design, and by using patterns to deliver this idea the designbecomes alive; a sense of motion is created. While exploring patterns you are able to discover numerous ways of incorporating hierarchy, movement, and excitement into your work. There are hundreds of alterations that can be made to one pattern that can completely change the way it is perceived, from the way it is created (from illustrator to pen and ink) to the negative space that the elements are held together by, patterning as a whole creates countless possibilities when exploring your design.
