Our most popular employees are lovable Canine Ambassadors who welcome guests and create a ‘paw-sitively’ wonderful home away from home. The popular Canine Ambassador program began at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in 2003, with Mavis, a Golden Labrador/Retriever cross, who was later joined in 2007 by Beau, a Yellow Lab. In 2016, Mavis and Beau set their sights on the dog day of retirement, and the hotel welcomed Ella, a five-year-old Labrador/Golden Retriever mix, and Elly, a five-year-old Black Labrador. Beau originally trained as a service dog, while Mavis, Ella and Elly, were trainees with BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, however, their social personalities found them all better suited for careers in the hospitality industry. Furry friends are always welcome at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver with pet-friendly amenities including in-room dining and welcome treats.

V ANCOUVER

The essential guide to Vancouver

Vancouver is dazzling! It’s generously endowed with natural splendor, snow capped mountains, temperate rainforests and the ocean! But it’s also a vibrant city with a glassy downtown and dozens of unique neighbourhoods to explore!

As the largest city located on Canada’s west coast, Vancouver is both naturally astounding and abundant in arts, culture, and diversity. For visitors, it’s a year-round treasure trove of activities and experiences. It’s possible to go boating in the morning, skiing in the afternoon, and watch your favorite band performing in the evening.

Vancouver is meant to be experienced outdoors. Thanks to its temperate climate, the city has its fair share of lush outdoor spaces, the largest among them being Stanley Park. After you’ve strolled some of its nearly 1,000 acres, visit some of the city’s other beloved outdoor attractions like Queen Elizabeth Park or VanDusen Botanical Garden. For a real thrill, take a walk across the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which hovers 230 feet above Capilano River. When you’re ready to refuel, you’ll have your pick of delicious market eats at Granville Island and Lonsdale Quay.

The hotel staff have compiled a list of recommended activities to help you experience the area’s most popular attractions in Vancouver and hidden treasures! Visit our concierge team for more information.

EVENTs IN VANCOUVER

From the Polar Bear Swim on January 1 to New Year’s Eve celebrations, Vancouver’s calendar is filled with festivals and other exciting events. Remember that dates and details for an event can change, so be sure to confirm dates and times before making travel plans.

FOURTEENTH FLOOR HERITAGE SUITES

Experience an unparalleled level of luxury in the newly restored Fourteenth Floor Heritage suites of historic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

The restoration project was undertaken by CHIL Interior Design, who drew inspiration from a former era defined by luxurious travel, visiting monarchs, elaborate garments, brocade fabrics, and royal tapestries. The design commemorates the city’s

monumental Royal Visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, who officially opened and stayed at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in 1939.

Careful attention was paid to preserve the hotel’s extensive list of heirlooms on the fourteenth floor, which included: its guest room doors, made in 1939 of English harewood with bronze inset doorplates; the elaborate bronze hallway doors; the African Sapele wood paneled walls of the elevator lobby accented with solid bronze inlay strips; and the English black walnut veneer-paneled walls of the Lt. Governor Suite originating from a single walnut tree and so skillfully matched that the same markings may be traced symmetrically around the entire room.

All guests staying in the Fourteenth Floor Heritage Suites receive Fairmont Gold privileges and access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge.

Up Close & Personal

With Debbie Wild

Les Clefs d’Or Concierge at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

W HEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A CONCIERGE AND HOW DID YOU START ?

I never really ‘decided’ to become a Concierge, a friend of mine who was a Concierge at another hotel told me about a position available at Hotel Vancouver and thought I would really enjoy it. As it was just a 3 month temporary position, I thought I’d try it out and I have now been here over 23 years!

W HAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL AND CAN YOU DESCRIBE A NORMAL DAY FOR US ?

We are basically a ‘one stop shop’ for guest assistance whilst travelling. We recommend tours, give restaurant recommendations and make reservations. We help with courier shipments, flight changes, source hard to find objects, arrange baby sitters, book private transportation and much, much more! A typical day would involve welcoming and guiding guests to their meeting rooms, telling guests about our Canine Ambassadors,

Elly & Ella, answering e-mails and phone calls, assisting guests in planning their stay and keeping current with events/happenings around the city.

W HAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF SPEAKING TO A CONCIERGE OVER SEARCHING THE INTERNET ?

You create a valuable connection and receive more detailed and informed information by speaking to a concierge directly. We know tips and tricks that you might not always get on the internet, and have valuable relationships with partners around the city.

W HAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT BEING A CONCIERGE ?

I love helping people and making sure that they have the best possible stay in our beautiful city.

W HAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES THAT YOU FACE AND WHAT IS THE MOST SATISFYING OR UNUSUAL

THING YOU HAVE DONE FOR A GUEST ?

As Vancouver is constantly growing it can be a challenge to keep up with all the changes happening. Having said that, Concierges love a challenge as it means learning something new, finding out the answer and ‘making it happen’ for our guests. I have been a witness to several guests at their weddings, walked celebrities’ dogs, bought dress shoes for a guest as she only had her tennis shoes with her, to name a few fun things.

W HAT PLACES DO YOU GENERALLY RECOMMEND ?

I love recommending cycling around the seawall. We are lucky enough to boast an amazing walking/cycling path surrounding downtown Vancouver which takes you around magnificent Stanley Park and False Creek. Gastown is also a must-see and is well known for its whistling steam clock and mix of souvenir shops, indie art galleries and décor stores in Victorian buildings.

Discover

Vancouver’s Neighbourhoods

This guide will give you the insider information you need to familiarize yourself with Vancouver’s neighbourhood and decide which one (or multiple) is right for your visit...

1 HASTINGS-SUNRISE

Where the 4 minute mile was broken by the Empire games, Hastings-Sunrise is best known as the home of the Pacific National Exhibition. Made by hand in Vancouver since 1946, you can visit the historic Dayton factory. Dayton Boots are made with the best of everything. The best leathers and Goodyear Welted, durable soles and quality hardware. There’s something special about owning a pair of Daytons.

2

7 DAVIE VILLAGE

Rainbow flags and sunburst banners adorn the lampposts in this lively neighbourhood in the heart of downtown’s dense West End. Known internationally for its thriving community of gay and lesbian residents, Davie Village offers a chilled out vibe for people during the day and thumping clubs and street life at night.

GASTOWN

Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, Gastown grew from a single tavern founded by John ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton back in 1867. Today, the historic Gastown is on most visitors’ lists as its cobbled streets are home to attractions such as the steam clock (which is actually from the 1970s and not as historic as it looks), and there are plenty of trendy boutiques and restaurants to enjoy an afternoon or evening here.

GRANVILLE ISLAND

In the early 1900s, Granville Island was home to factories, plants and sawmills. Things are a little different todayGranville Island is both a locals’ favorite and a huge draw for visitors. The Granville Island public Market acts as a hub of activity, but it’s also one of the city’s most important cultural districts with theatres, artisan workshops, craft studios and much more.

3 OLYMPIC VILLAGE

Starting life as the home to the athletes that took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics, Olympic Village is now sometimes overlooked as a tourist attraction even though it’s got some of the city’s best patios for sunny drinks and the seawall stretches to Granville Island and beyond. Family-friendly attractions such as science World and False Creek Ferries also make this newer neighbourhood well worth a visit.

FAIRVIEW 4

Sometimes called south Granville or False Creek, Fairview is the name for the neighbourhood that covers Granville Island and the southern stretch of Granville. Home to the popular public market, this area is also the street to visit for cultural events such as movies or the theatre, as well as a plethora of art galleries and antique shops in the area.

5 DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER

Downtown Vancouver is not exactly a neighbourhood of its own, but the city center should be on any sightseeing list as it’s home to the Vancouver Art Gallery and other attractions such as Robson square, which hosts free dance events in the summer and ice skating in the winter months.

6 LOWER LONSDALE

Situated on North Vancouver’s vibrant waterfront with views of Vancouver’s stunning downtown skyline to the south and soaring North shore Mountains to the north, Lower Lonsdale is one of North Vancouver’s oldest and fastest growing urban neighbourhoods. The Shipyards District in Lower Lonsdale has quickly become a hub of independent shops, restaurants and more.

8 CHINATOWN

Established back in the 1890s, Vancouver’s Chinatown has been humming busily for more than a century with vivid colours, exotic cuisine and a vibrant culture. No visit is complete without spending time at Dr. sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden - the first of its kind to ever be built in Canada!

9 GRANVILLE STREET

Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Street is where you’ll find Vancouver’s main downtown entertainment district.

20 THE pREsTIGE | FAIRMONT HOTEL VANCOUVER
THE pREsTIGE | FAIRMONT HOTEL VANCOUVER 21

KITSILANO

Kitsilano’s golden beach is a summertime hotspot for volleyball players, swimmers, kayakers, and sun worshippers. “Kits,” as it’s known locally, is mainly clustered around the beach and the shops on West 4th Avenue and West Broadway.

11 KERRISDALE 12

15 COMMERCIAL DRIVE

A culturally rich and authentic neighbourhood, Commercial Drive - also known as The Drive - is one of the best and most colourful shopping, dining and nightlife districts you will find in the city; and boasts home to Vancouver’s own 8 block officially designated Little Italy, representing more than 60 years of Italian heritage.

16 YALETOWN

ROBSON STREET

With BC place stadium at one end, stanley park at the other, and the city’s best-known shopping precinct in between, Robson street is a must-stroll for most visitors to Vancouver! Being right in the heart of the downtown core, you’ll find yourself walking right alongside locals on their way to the office.

Kerrisdale’s main shopping area is known to many as the “village.” It’s only 20 minutes from Vancouver’s downtown and offers more than 200 diverse shops and services along quiet tree-lined streets. 13

WEST END

Tucked up tightly against the city’s downtown core, the West End is one of the easiest neighbourhoods for visitors to explore, getting a real taste of how real Vancouverites live! These days, it’s an incredibly diverse area, home to the city’s gay community (centred around Davie Village), heritage homes, and around 40,000 people living in high-rise apartments. The parks and beaches are the main attractions, but the people-watching and dining come in close behind. Summertime sees hundreds of thousands of people flock to English Bay to watch the Celebration of Light, a free international fireworks competition that lights up the neighbourhood every year! Head here early if you want to bag a spot on the beach as it gets pretty crowded as the day goes on.

COAL HARBOUR

Vancouver is known as the City of Glass, and the glinting condos of Coal Harbour are a prime example of why and how it earned this moniker. Close to the attractions of Canada place and the nature of stanley park, Coal Harbour is starting to attract foodies to the neighbourhood with clusters of new restaurants.

Located on the Canada Line Skytrain, and close to downtown, Yaletown covers a couple of blocks of converted warehouses. Here you’ll find chi-chi boutiques selling fashionable threads for your furry friend and fancy beauty establishments from blow-dry bars to brow places. The waterfront parks are a big draw in Yaletown. The city’s seawall runs right along the water, connecting two of the biggest green spaces: David Lam park and George Wainborn park.

17

PUNJABI MARKET

As the cultural focal point of the City of Vancouver’s Indo-Canadian population, at the Punjabi Market you’ll find new immigrants along with grandparents bringing the second-generation grand kids for a taste of their homeland.

18

MOUNT PLEASANT

Mount Pleasant (aka Main street) is one of the more hipster-oriented neighbourhoods in the city. Located just a short transit ride or walk from downtown, Main Street stretches through Mount Pleasant, and visitors come here for cheap eats, vintage shops, and some craft beer! This marks the boundary between Vancouver and ‘East Vancouver.’

19 STEVESTON

The theme of transformation is a big part of this former fishing village’s bold history. Once one of the largest fishing ports in the world, the shipyards in this neighbourhood in the south of Richmond have become museums and historic sites, where visitors can explore the depth of fishing’s influence on the area.
