Welcome to Pantherland
Community support gives Panthers the advantage By Keith Sparks, Sports Editor The Liberty Hill Independent Just about every young athlete on the planet dreams about playing in front of packed stadiums and arenas at some point. On Friday nights, whether it be at Panther Stadium, in the gym, or at a rival school, you can find elementary and junior high athletes hanging on the fence, imagining what it would be like to wear the purple and gold varsity uniform in front of a packed house. Those who have climbed the ranks to the varsity level are living out their dreams every Friday night, and the Liberty Hill community plays a huge role in that. Head Football Coach Jeff Walker highlighted how important the community’s support is to his team, a favor that he hopes to return by putting a successful product on the field. “It’s great to have the stands full, because it means so much to these kids,” Walker said. “As coaches, it doesn’t matter whether anybody’s there on either side. We’re
LH_FB PROGRAM_03.indd 1
focused on what we’ve got to do, but for the kids, I know it’s huge when we come out that second time and they run on the field to play and the stands are loud, people are all over and standing along the fence line, it makes it fun. It’s definitely more fun to play in front of a big crowd, and we hope we can be worth the price of admission.” While it’s relatively common to have a stadium full of fans during home games, what sets the Liberty Hill community apart from most is their willingness to travel to away games in droves. Head Volleyball Coach Gretchen Peterson said that on the road, especially, just seeing some familiar faces in the crowd can make a big difference in her team’s confidence. “We have really great parents and extended family, grandparents, brothers and sisters that travel really well, even to tournaments,” Peterson said. “We have a really good volleyball team, and it’s always nice to see familiar
faces in the gym, whether it’s at home or away games.” On the field, Walker said it’s clear that a packed house has an effect on his football players’ energy levels, and the support serves as a well-deserved return on investment for the athletes who work so hard during the week. Particularly during neutral-site playoff games and away games, Liberty Hill’s well-traveled fan base gives the Panthers an advantage that few teams have.
“Oh, there’s no doubt it does (give you an advantage),” Walker said. “It’s not going to make it a win or loss, but it’s just great to have the support of the community. I can’t stress that hard enough. Just people that don’t even have kids or alumni that played here 10, 15 years ago going to our games and supporting and backing these kids that work extremely hard day-in and

Anything for the Panthers A message from Jeff Walker, LHISD Athletic Director
The Liberty Hill Athletic Department is excited to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year. We are very fortunate to have dedicated coaches leading our student-athletes as well as a strong network of support from our community, staff, alumni and parents. We will continue to strive for achievement in all girls’ and boys’ programs where we have had deep runs in the playoffs in almost every sport. I will do my best to continue fostering an environment of excellence in our athletic programs. I believe athletics is the window to our school and is designed to further the educational development of young men and women through participation. The commitment, dedication and respect for others experienced in athletics will serve as a foundation of each student’s continued growth and life-long learning
A message from Jonathan Bever, Liberty Hill High School Interim Principal
experience. Athletic success is most often measured by wins and losses, but the success we take the most pride in is the valuable life lessons that student-athletes learn. I believe strongly in the value of high school sports. I love seeing students build friendships, create lifetime memories, celebrate their successes and learn from their failures. I enjoy getting to know the student-athletes, helping to provide opportunities for them to gain leadership skills, learn about being part of a team, help them deal with adversity and appreciate the importance of good sportsmanship on and off the field. Support from our school board, faculty, administrators, parents and the community make our success at Liberty Hill possible. Liberty Hill is truly a special place because of all of you. On behalf of all the coaches and athletic trainers, we want to thank the parents for giving us the opportunity to
I am looking forward to a new and exciting year at Liberty Hill High School. I am honored to work with the students, staff and community of Liberty Hill ISD. My passion has always been the students and seeing all the success that takes place with hard work and determination. My goal as we move forward is to promote a culture of excellence for all stakeholders as we learn from each other to work for the future. Let us begin by evaluating what we have, determining what we can improve on, and identifying what we need to change. It is my sincere desire to provide the leadership that will facilitate a clear vision, as well as supporting students, faculty and the Liberty Hill community. I commend all of our coaches, sponsors, student-athletes and performers for their daily efforts to compete at their highest level possible. We have set high goals for our students, both in the classroom and in the competition arena, with the knowledge that these daily challenges serve very favorably

in the overall development of our capable students and leaders of tomorrow. As we look forward to a successful and rewarding year at Liberty Hill High School, I want to invite each of you to continue supporting the Panthers by attending the many events throughout the school year. I believe that with your support the students of Liberty Hill High School will be successful and will accomplish all that they set out to do. I often tell people, “Everything our students touch, turns to gold.” In reality, our students are great at what they do and with the continued support of this awesome community, the sky is the limit. Community Continued from Page 3 day-out. There’s no doubt when we go to away games, it’s neat that we’ll sometimes have as many as the home team. I know the kids notice it. I know these young men appreciate everybody showing up and being loud and having some Panther spirit.” Behind enemy lines, jeers from opposing fan bases can force the visitors to waver by making them feel uncomfortable. Luckily for the Lady Panther volleyball team, Peterson said their fans travel so well that they’re nearly as comfortable on the road as they are at home. “I think when kids feel comfort-
able, they’re more confident, so I think it definitely allows them to feel confident and to be more sure of themselves to go out there and play hard, because they know that they have people there that support them and care about them,” Peterson said. “It definitely allows for them to feel more confident away from the safety of our own gym.” The Liberty Hill community has long been known for its unconditional support, from summer travel games to Friday night football games. Clearly, it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
