The following is a collection of my work from the past five years at Iowa State University. It is the result of much iteration, success, and growth. With each project, my understanding of the built environment expanded and matured. These explorations have guided me to understand that architecture is much more than an object but rather a powerful experience that has the potential to change and move people. Building upon this work, I hope to continue striving to make simple and thoughtful designs that can be easily understood and also make a tactile differences in others’ lives.

Kevin Nordmeyer Nestled in a forest on the edge of a slopping site, The University of Iowa requested design proposals for a new outdoor education facility. The building was to be integrated into their 485 acre complex, and the program called for five flexible classrooms that could transform into a large event space, offices, and a storm shelter. The design for this center was inspired by the natural transformation the site would undergo with the changing of the seasons. A path to and from the building was also developed to frame views and enforce the idea that the building was just a node to be discovered amongst a much greater network. Situated on a vacant lot in the heart of downtown Boston, the task was to design a new jazz venue for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The program called for two theaters: a 1,200 seat acoustically designed main hall and a flexible 300 seat experimental hall as well as additional support spaces. The design approach aimed to lift the public spaces to create a plaza on the ground floor that enforced the connection between the water and downtown Boston created by an existing pedestrian bridge. Vertical circulation was used as a way for people to experience the opposite sides of the site, and the linear design of the main lobby emphasized the connection being implemented on the ground floor. Theater Design The balconies were meticulously designed to allow for clear sight lines to the stage. The back wall is the result of this design and is a focal point in the lobby. The non parallel side walls and the ceiling cloud, designed with the help of Ecotect, allow for great acoustics throughout the theater. acoustical analysis diagrams

The New York Foundation of Arts requested design proposals for a new artist in residence facility to be built on an abandoned corner lot in Soho. The challenge was to balance live work spaces on a tight site. Also, the ground floor was to maintain a public presence. The program we developed was inspired by the lack of recycling in the area. The ground floor was designed as a recycling drop off center. As a way to educate and inspire the public, the artists would use recycled objects to create their art. The floors were programed with individual units where artists could live privately, as well as many communal spaces to encourage collaboration, the display of work, and the sharing of ideas. 0 4 EXPERIENCE INDUSTRIAL OBJECTS MUSEUM Columbus, IN . Fall 2011 . LaDan Omidvar The city of Columbus, Indiana is known for its innovative contributions to industry and modern architecture. They were seeking to build a museum to display some of their work. The site choosen to be developed was tight and uniquely neighbored by I.M. Pei’s Library, Eliel Saarinen’s First Christian Church, and Columbus’s visitors center. The concept for the Museum was derived from the idea of design process. When designing it is important for someone to have outward influence, be able to look back on where they have been, and have a space to reflect internally on their designs. The design of the Design EXposed (DEX) museum was based on these three stimuli. Partner: Reed Counts

05D E L I G H T RECYCLED OBJECTS LIGHT FIXTURE Furniture Design . Spring 2012 . Chris Martin The assignment was to create a light fixture inspired by a recycled object. After finding a box of discarded magazines, the concept for this project took shape. The design intent was to make a simple fixture that would look beautiful on or off. Another goal was to maintain the integrity of the magazines while displaying them in a much different and elegant fashion. The steel base, chord, and electrical fittings for this lamp were also found objects, making the fixture a beautiful assembly of discarded parts.
