Embrace | Municipal Services Building Kowloon City, Hong Kong
EMBRACE Being an arm of the hill to embrace
Kowloon City has been developing during these decades and transition of residential typology is easy to be observed. Along Junction Road, we can experience the gradual change of terrain and the density of educational institutions. Among the institutions and residences, it is abnormal to spot a christian cemetery in the middle of the city. However, with the blocking of greenings and its stepping-up design, it is hard to be discovered. Besides the density of these programmes, greenings and sport facilities in Kowloon City are more than sufficient comparing with other districts in Hong Kong except flat and flexible outdoor spaces. Under the inspirations from the hidden cemtery and the lack of outdoor spaces, the concept of “embrace has come up. Our site is exactly next to a hill and the cemtery, also between schools and residences. There-
fore, a similar design method like the cemetry, stepping- down, was then utilized as the design principle for the municipal services buildin. More than that, the building was aimed to merge into the greenings nearby like an arm of the hill stretching out for enclosing a flat and flexible outdoor space while separating it from Junction Road. The design of the municipal service building was aimed to be simple, clean and functional but also can be elegant and landmarking. White columns and floor slabs, walls with wood cladding and curtain walls are the main features which can keep the outlook to be simple and strong. It is hoped that the building can be a role to gather all ages of people at different times and be an embrace for all of them.

To achieve the merging of the design into the site, there are four main features which were taken from the site: portico, a corridor-like space providing shelter for pedestrians and acting as a buffer zone; leve difference, a method of creating semi-open space; sense of belonging, residents need a proper gathering space; flat and flexible space, necessary for different stakeholders like schools, community centre, etc to hold various kinds of events. These features are imperative that drove me to design a municipal services building which is not only functionally responsive but also takes up a role to create coherence within the community.

From the sections, it can be observed that the building is laying between the hill and the cemtery, portico facing Junction Road can be a buffer zone for the market and shelter for pedestrians. Double-height market with curtain walls and wooden walls is giving another layer for the plaza behind while porosity of the building is enhanced. Food court is spatially
and physically connected with market by a spiral staircase which can turn the market space more dynamic. Plaza is separated with the road by a covered space while connected with sports hall by big staircase with seatings and greening and market aside.

ZigZag | Collective Housing Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong
ZigZag Blurring the boundary between Yau Ma Tei and Jordan
Zigzag is a form generated from diagonal and horizontal lines, it is unique to be observed in Yau Ma Tei and Jordan due to the intersection of the city grid. The zigzag form helps define two open spaces which are entirely designed for the residents and the people working in market. Around our site, there are only one open space for the public and it is mostly occupied by people living in Yau Ma Tei, and also the hawkers working at night will bring noise and untidiness to the place. By the engagement with the highway, a comfortable garden space can be provided for
the residents from both Yau Ma Tei and Jordan. The zigzag form breaks the boundary between Yau Ma Tei and Jordan but also gives a strict boundary between garden and market place which are two programmes with completely two different properties: Quiet and Busy. The blocking with setback and different floor height, enhancing the engagement with natural light and ventilation, creates vertical connectivity between residents. Lastly, the idea of shared kitchen and living room can create more flexible interior space in accordance to the willingness of the residents.

Site A -Intersection| Site Overview |
Concept of my design is derived from the activities happening at daytime and night time and it must be the most unqiue part of the site. From the photos below, it can be observed that all activities happened at daytime are in in the south side of the site while all happened at night in the East side. Therefore, Shanghai Street becomes an invisible boundary.

Blossom | Education Centre Da Nang, Vietnam
Blossom Gradual stretching-out of the hill
Climatic response and structure are two important topics for all architects, understanding of the local climate can help provide the best solution of architectural design for the site. Da Nang, a city of Vietnam where the climate is hot and humid, is populated and near the sea in East. Prevaiiling wind comes from the eastern side during Summer, sun angle is approximately 50 degrees in the morning and 70 degrees at noon. To start with the design, the massing is placed according to the site topogarphy so as to reduce the direct influence to the forest, also
it can help merge into the forest with wooden building material. However, it is hoped that the education centre does not hide but also stretch outwards to express its engagement with the river aside. Meanwhile, courtyard space and mock-up tesing area can be provided for the users. Never ignoring the climatic response, pitched roof is used for the frequent rainy days while it can block most of the direct sunlight to the interior. Last but not least, the skylight can reach the interior through the tip of the roof smoothy.

Hide & Seek | Pavilion London, Unite Kingdom
Hide & Seek Corrugated Board Pavilion
Hide & Seek Pavilion is completely made of corrugated boards that highly express the variation of light effects and connections between inside and outside through changes of openings. The basic unit of the pavilion is conceptually from origami by folding a flat corrugated board with five cuts. With the basic unit, it can be varied with different angles of folding the corrugated boards, from the least at the bottom to the most on the top. The connection between each column is very simple by interlocking with each other and fastening by plastic strips. However, the height
of the columns will urge their collapse inwards, thus result in structural failure. Therefore, a long strip of corrugated column with triangular configuration is penetrated through columns alternately. To create the atmosphere of hide and seek, two semi-circles with ascending and descending height are interlocked so as to achieve layerings. More than that, the openings of two semi-circles are reversed in terms of direction, so that the visitors can experience different kinds of light effects by going in from two entrances.
There are too many walls and the space will be crowded.
It has a circulation which go through the pavilion and large space in middle.
From small corridor to large center space inside the pavilion.
Walls are too close with each other and light can penetrate.
Two curves with different heights. The outer wall will be shorter so the pavilion will be more open and welcoming.
The pavilion is open towards the front.
