Saying goodbye isn’t forgetting After 12 years in school, we’ve finally reached the end of our journey, which we celebrate on Graduation Day. It’s exciting to realize how large of an accomplishment this is. We deserve to be proud. But honestly, it’s a little bittersweet. Our lives as we know them are changing. We’ll be around new people and places, be forced to be our own advocates and maybe even start financially supporting ourselves. Graduation marks the end of our childhood and opens the door for so many new opportunities and experiences. One of the most important things for us right now is to learn to communicate, to establish your confidence. It’s not that there aren’t people still supporting and pushing you, but they won’t necessarily offer help and
advice without being asked. In high school, we see the same people every day, so we’re forced to be together and it’s easier to connect and interact with peers and teachers, but once we graduate, it’s up to us to make sure we keep the connections we need in order to be successful and happy. However, a common misconception is that once we graduate, we become adults. Suddenly, we’re on our own. But, we’re not adults. Not yet, at least. Just because we are legally considered adults doesn’t mean we are ready to act alone. Even though college gives you freedom and responsibility, it’s still guided. College is a built in time for young adults to learn to be successful while living on our own. It’s a buffer region. Despite thinking we
know everything, we really still know nothing about adulthood. We have responsibilities now, but college is a time where we can learn to handle and manage those responsibilities in an appropriate way. And as we go into adulthood, realize that every connection counts. This is a transitional period, so don’t burn bridges. Connect with as many people as you can before you leave, because you never know where you’ll need connections down the road. Tell a girl you don’t know that her dress is pretty, or tell a freshman on the baseball team that he has great potential. You never know when you’ll need the help of that person down the road. It’s unnecessary to become attached to these people, but interacting and being pres-
ent are really important in the remaining time left. It’s simple networking. Don’t waste possible connections, just because you’re “waiting” for college. Don’t wait to interact with others because you think you’re never going to see them again. It may be true that you won’t see these people again, but it’s not worth it to waste a helping hand. Graduation marks the beginning of a chapter. However, we need to keep in mind that although we are starting a new chapter, the old ones aren’t erased. People see college as “starting over.” We should really learn to see it as a progression though. We’re building and improving on ourselves and our current lives, not disconnecting ourselves from them completely.

Future Lancers receive advice Sarah Altermatt: Enjoy your time here. Go to the sports games and the dances. Lukas Anderson: Take easy classes, and pass as much time as possible and do the activities or you will regret it in the long run once you graduate. Kyle Bayer: I didn’t get anything for doing well so I’d say keep being you. Mizzou is tough when it comes to scholarships. They don’t give anything unless you’re one of the best. Danielle Biernacki: Life’s short so live it up! Brian Boucher: Take classes you will enjoy. Theresa Brands: Do not have more difficult classes second semester senior year than first semester. Senioritis is a real illness. Monica Carron: Don’t text in Mrs. Whit’s resource room. She looks friendly, but she’ll bite. Hope Chorzel: Take flex classes and stop procrastinating. Alex Chung: Take senior option. Dominic Corvington: Don’t be shy. Part of what makes high school great is becoming friends with people of all backgrounds. Katie Czolgosz: My advice is take Finite math as a senior with Mr. Krull. Chris Emge: Do as much as you can with the time you have. Carly Farinella: Take Willard’s class. It will change your life. Abigail Finder: Don’t try to grow up too fast. Just take it slow and enjoy your life right now. Kyle Glennon: E.L.E. Everybody love everybody. Kayla Hall: Join clubs, go to as many sports events as possible, work hard to get a high GPA, appreciate your teachers and cherish the time spent with teammates and friends. Tim Heath: Take challenging classes that you enjoy. Thomas Heney: Don’t pull out of the parking lot in the middle of December with all your windows rolled down
just so people can hear how loud your music is. Andrew Higgins: If you see an intruder in the building, dial 99611. Nicole Hoog: Second semester senior year get all A’s or else you’ll regret having to take finals in May! Christine Jackson: Yes, the papers are free. Just take one. Brittany Jacobs: Enjoy every last moment of your senior year because it goes by way too fast! Alyssa Johnson: Before you worry about what others think of you, you have to know who you are for yourself. Brooke Johnson: Try to stay focused last semester of high school. Exempting finals will be worth it. Grace Kiely: Enjoy high school while you’re in it! It sounds stupid, but I am actually sad that I am graduating. I’m going to miss this place. Yoon-Jae Kim: Invest in gold and diversify your stock portfolio. Jesse Knickerbocker: Run! Tyler Kohl: Do your best work always. Luke Kreienkamp: What happens in high school stays on Facebook. Andrea Lanning: Work hard and enjoy every moment! You’ll never be in high school again! Richard Lu: You must be swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, with all the strength of a racing fire, mysterious as the dark side of the moon. –Mulan Jordynn Martin: Do not take any time for granted because high school flies by! Make the most of the time you have here! Katelyn McConnell: Don’t wish your time away and hurry to grow up. Someday you’ll look back and realize you were still in high school. Alicia Mestre: Don’t over-exert yourself. Nobody is perfect, regardless of their expectations (or their parents’). Maddie Moreton: Don’t procrastinate!
Colleen O’Connell: Enjoy your last couple of years with your friends and do the things you enjoy. Time flies by. Sarah Perry: Be weird. Being normal is boring and unoriginal. Caroline Quinn: As much as you may think you will be immune to senioritis, it will get the best of you. Take easy classes second semester senior year! Alex Radetic: Walk in the middle, stand on the sides. Kaitlyn Richardson: Be kind-a part of growing up is learning to accept and respect people for who they are. Being a mean person only makes you a worse person. Michael Scharf: Buy sandwiches at lunch; they’re your only hope. Mia Schenone: Get on the secretaries’ good side so they can write you passes so you’re not tardy. Lucas Shapland: Do work. Brandon Sinanan: If you thought that the early years of high school were bad, don’t worry. It stays that way later on. Elana Sindelar: Sleep every chance you get, and don’t waste your time when you’re awake. Blake Stonecipher: The quicker you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up. Ed Theobald: Give up now. Hannah Thurauf: Take advantage of all your opportunities. Madeline Van House: High school flies by- take advantage of the time you have. Andrea Vinson: You really have yourself to depend on. Chelsea Weise: Study hard and you will be rewarded. Alexis West: Don’t be afraid to get involved in whatever you want, even as a junior or senior. Seniors celebrate at Cardinals game
1.
R O I N [ S E IO gripes N] T EDI Stars To:
•The Cardinals for winning a memorable World Series during our senior year. At least Albert Pujols picked another red team to sabotage. •Girls swimming, field hockey and girls volleyball all winning State since 2010. Though we wish the last two didn’t win on the same day so we could watch both. •Being the last graduating class the world will ever know. We would say leaving for college isn’t the end of the world, but...
2.
1. After Matt Holliday hits a home run, seniors give a standing ovation for the home team. 2. Madison Beirne shows off the ball tossed to her by Carlos Beltran. 3. Brittany Watson, Kayla Goodwin, Dominique Robinson, Patricia Miller and Unecia Gates grab some snacks before returning to their seats. 4. Lukas Anderson and Joe Linnemann enjoy the April 19 game versus the Cinicinnati Reds. 5. Seniors take a break from classes and spend thier afternoon in the stands.
3.
4.
Gripes To:
• The Rams for winning a grand total of 12 games since 2008. Obviously, President Obama’s promise of change didn’t apply to everyone. • These last minute ridiculous policies, such as assigned parking, no hugging and P.E. uniforms. They couldn’t have waited a year? • The cookie stand going downhill. What’s this whole grain nonsense?
