The Class of 2015 has raised the bar of excellence higher than it’s ever been before. Academically, [it’s] the highest performing class that we’ve ever had in my 12 years. ” – Dr. Tim Jones, Assistant Principal
“
I feel like your class is still my class because I know your class the best out of any other group in the high school since I had you guys as freshmen and sophomores. I wish I could’ve kept going with you and had you all four years. – Mandy Lewis, Assistant Principal

know WHAT
YOU
We’re finally getting out of here. Now, I could lie and say I’ve enjoyed every second of high school, that I’ll miss all my teachers and even all of you, but we all know that is not true. I am so ready to leave high school and go to my freshman orientation, start taking classes and live away from home. In short, I’m ready to start my life, just like most of you are. And while our teachers and parents will call it senioritis or just plain being lazy, I see it a lot differently. After high school is when we make life decisions, whether it’s choosing a college, a career or going into the military. We all have a say in where we go from here. We are finally adults. And for most of us, we’ve already chosen what we want to do in life, even if we were still stuck in high school. We’ve figured out where we’ll be this time next year, and it’s not going to be at Lafayette. Amazing things are happening to us. Many are going to become

doctors, engineers, journalists, teachers, soldiers and so much more than the upperclassmen we’ve been this year. For others, they will be students at Missouri State, or Ohio State, spread throughout the country, not yet knowing where they’ll be in 10 years. But at least they know where they’ll be next year and it’s not at LHS. That all starts once we graduate. Can teachers really blame us for not wanting to learn about integrals when in a few short months,
we’ll be planning how to become doctors, engineers, journalists, teachers and soldiers? Part of it is that we are truly ready to leave. After four years here, and another nine years previously in a standard education system, we are entering more of the real world. We are moving minutes, hours, plane rides, and, for a few, countries away from our parents and from this school. We are going to take classes that we really want to learn about. Instead of taking one class in

journalism and wasting the rest of my time in core classes that I truly have no interest in other than for my GPA, next year I’ll be taking a few core classes to fill my requirements. The majority of my classes next year will consist of journalism writing, interviewing, photojournalism and design classes. It’s going to be a lot of writing, and I can’t wait. Honestly, I’m ready to become a journalist or a high school English teacher and start changing people’s lives, whether it be from my writing or someone else’s. Others will be taking nursing and medical classes, and change people’s lives that way. Who knows, a senior could change someone’s life by being a bussinessman. Either way, we’re moving on, and becoming more than a high school student. I may not have known all of you and even those that I do know I might not like you, but we have made it. And I know we will do amazing things after we graduate. Good luck to all of you. I’m sure we will all need it.
It’s Just the Beginning hannah martin – editor in chief –
What once seemed like a lifetime away is finally here. Graduation. Of course, we never thought it would come this fast. You close your eyes for a second and just like that, you’re done with high school. Thinking back to freshman year, I would have never imagined things to turn out the way they have, but I wouldn’t take back a single thing. As each day goes by, things don’t necessarily seem to change. But when you look back as a whole, things are completely different. As a class, we dealt with more than most have. We’ve overcome adversity and knocked down obstacles with heart and triumph. We may not all be best friends and most of us would agree we don’t always get along, but we’re all family that came
together when we needed to. Some of us have been together since kindergarten, while others became friends senior year. As we close the chapter of our high school lives, we will begin a new one. This page has run out of room and blank pages await us. What we choose to fill those pages with are entirely up to us though. Going to college will be our very last new beginning. It will be our last and most likely biggest transition we will go through in life. It’s your last chance to become the person you want to be and make the most of the next four years. But before we put both feet in college, don’t forget about what you’re leaving behind. If you’re like me, you’ve spent all your life in one place. Going to college will be an
entire new world. No amount of college visits can completely prepare us for what we’re jumping into. Being in high school, we’ve all gotten caught up with the drama and popularity. We’re trying to figure out who you are as a person, but sometimes we need to stop and look around every once in a while as Ferris Bueller put it. We’ve all come a long way and have a lot farther to go. Just because you go to college doesn’t mean you should forget about everything from the last four years. High school has impacted our lives more than you might think. Because even though you’re dying to get away from here and start a new life on your own, what happened here has made you who you are today. And you might think you’re
ready to get out, you’re still not quite there yet. Make the most of the journey you’re about to go on. Whatever you missed out on in high school, make up for it in college. It’s never too late. When you look back on high school, remember all the great things that happened. Take pride of how far you’ve come from being that awkward freshman who never thought you would find your way around the school. High school may not be the most fabulous four years of your life, but we did it. And I can guarantee you’ll never forget the last time you put on a jersey that sported Lafayette across the front or stood on the theater stage in the last school play. Life as we know it is just about to start. So, Class of 2015, this isn’t it. This is only the beginning.

2011-2015 edition
Stars:
Gripes:
- St. Louis Cardinals becoming Worlds Series Champions in 2011 and David Freese’s legendary contribution to Game 6. (2011) - Seal Team 6’s execution of international terrorist Osama Bin Laden. (2011) - The last episode of Oprah aired in 2011. Future generations of soccer moms will just have to find something else on Oprah’s new channel to bore themselves with. - After years of cinematic agony, the Twilight Saga movies finally came to a close with Breaking Dawn: Part 2. (2012) - From the Royal Wedding to Kate’s second pregnancy, we Americans have enjoyed watching the English Royal Family while the English couldn’t care less. (2011-2013) - LHS Theater Company for putting on some of the most unique productions like Shrek: the Musical and The Addams Family the past few years. Such talent graduating this year. - Girls volleyball has won the state championship every year for the past four years. Hopefully they keep winning after we leave! - The recent onslaught of Marvel Comics films. There have been 14 in the last four years and another 16 on the way in the next four years. - Low gas prices. It feels good not having to suffer severe mental breakdowns whenever we go to fill up. (2013-2015) - Prop 4 passed this year. New lab equipment, turf fields, and a multitude of other things that needed to be fixed in Rockwood. Too bad we can’t enjoy them. - Four years of LHS memories.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ended the series in 2011. At least Rowling came up with three more magical novels to squeeze more money from the Wizarding World. - The rise and fall of childhood stars the past four years: Amanda Bynes and her cheek piercings, actual cannibal Shia LeBeouf, rehab-going Lindsay Lohan, and the infamous Justin Bieber. (2011-2015) - 50 Shades of Grey, the best-selling, poorly written erotic novel that sparked a newfound popularity of reading porn in public. And now it’s a movie. (20122015) - The Superintendent shuffle. We went from Borcher to Adams to Knost in a little over a year. (2013-2014) - Ebola. Yes, it has killed millions in Africa, but more importantly it’s become an obnoxious joke among students. (2014) - The switch from half days to late start Mondays. So what if we didn’t get anything done during the reign of half days? Everyone’s late on Mondays anyway. - @LHSProblems. Every year, someone’s tried to bring it back and every year, they’ve gotten shut down after a couple days. No one wants to read blatant and vulgar lies, but thanks for trying. - Kim Kardashian’s butt. She’s showed plenty of it throughout the years, but nothing beats her photoshoot for PaperMag. (2014) - The fall of Facebook. All the notifications now are just your great aunt inviting you to play Farmville. - Being called the “selfie” generation. But before I continue my rant, let me take a selfie. - The tradition of snow days has ended. Thank goodness it’s our last year.

Geared Up and Ready To Go Seniors have plans to enlist in the military after high school After graduation on May 20, seniors will go down their own paths and go to college, work or enlist in the military. The Class of 2015 will have graduates who have enlisted in the Marines (USMC), Army, Missouri Army National Guard (MOARNG) and more. Hannah Farrell and Dejuan Wright plan to go to basic training in the MOARNG. The MOARNG is a sub branch of the National Guard and the Air National Guard. These branches are closely linked with the United States Army and Air Force. “I’ve wanted to join the military since I was a freshman,” Farrell said. In the National Guard, Farrell’s Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) will be a combat medic, designation 68 Whiskey. On active duty, combat medics serve as health care specialists and their primary role is to provide medical assistance, treat injuries and health protection. She looks forward to the MOARNG because she believes it will not only benefit her, but others. She’s confident, but a bit nervous about the physical aspects. On June 15, she will begin basic training. People who enlist in the military can enter in with a higher
rank if certain requirements are met. Participation in ROTC for example, can enable an enlistee to enter in the military up to the rank of E-2, the second enlisted rank designation in the armed forces. There are many reasons why people enlist. Some join because they had relatives that served, while others join because of the unique experience and serving their country. In the Army, Johnnie Glover will be a human resources specialist, codename 42 Alpha. Glover joined because he wanted a secure future after high school. Jonathan Savala will join the USMC because he wants to challenge himself and be a part of the Marine Corps. “I want to travel the world and protect my country, family and friends, the things I love the most,” Savala said. Since the 5th grade, Savala has wanted to go into the Marines, and he will fulfill that passion in June 2016. In the USMC, his MOS is a rifleman, codename 42 Alpha. This position is part of the infantry division of the Marines. A rifleman is a member of a squad on the battlefield that uses an array of rifles, machine guns an other equipment in combat.

Dynamic Duo
Houston, Sacus have each other’s backs, on and off the field A brotherhood is more than a friendship. It is something that unites two individuals and pushes them to better one another. Alvin Houston and Cedrion Sacus are not blood relatives, but make no mistake—they are most certainly brothers. Like Batman and Robin or Sherlock and Watson, it is weird to imagine one without the other. Houston and Sacus became friends during their seventh grade and since then they have done almost everything together. Both Houston and Sacus have ran track and played the same position of defensive back on the football team during their four years of high school together. Because of the strong bond Houston and Sacus have developed over the years, they know each other better than the back of their hands. The duo claims that they have stuck together all these years for different reasons. “Going to the same school all these years is probably the main reason we have stuck together for so long,” Houston said. Sacus, however, claims that he has been so close with Houston because of their almost identical characteristics. “We have the same personality. We enjoy the same things and we play the same games. I guess we just enjoy each other’s company,” Sacus said. Playing the same sports has been a major influence in keeping the duo’s brotheralive. In fact, Houston To be honest, I don’t hood credits Sacus as his inspirareally dislike anything tion to excel in his athletics. “We play football and run about Ced... Except track together, so we push when I lose to him.” each other in different ways depending on what we are – Alvin Houston, 12 doing. In track, we just try to see who can go the fastest. In football, we try to see who can get the most coverage, interceptions, picks and tackles because we both play corner. We are able to push each other and we know what to expect out of each other,” Houston said. Track and football have served as the glue that has held Houston and Sacus together throughout high school, but the duo manages to maintain their friendship outside of their athletics too. Sacus claims that outside of running track and playing football, he and Houston are inseparable because of their twin-like relationship. When asked about what he likes and dislikes about Houston, Sacus only had kind words to share. “I don’t dislike anything about Alvin. We are always together. We run track together, we play football together, we hang out together and we party together. We are basically the same person,” Sacus said. Houston shared the same thoughts, but managed to simultaneously display his competitive spirit towards Sacus. “To be honest, I don’t really dislike anything about Ced... except when I lose to him,” said Houston Although Houston and Sacus are borderline twins, their greatest test of brotherhood will unfold in the upcoming months as life after high school approaches. Houston will be attending Washburn University in Kansas and

Sacus will be heading to Minnesota to attend Rochester Junior College, so the distance may force the duo to learn how to be individuals. Both Sacus and Houston are aware that things are about to change, but their focus now is living in the moment. “We are going our separate ways, which is going to be weird. We don’t really talk about it much though, we’re just trying to have some fun together this summer,” Houston said. No matter what the future holds, Houston and Sacus have left a legacy of fellowship at Lafayette. By pushing each other to be better one another, Alvin Houston and Cedrion Sacus have earned the title of the Dynamic Duo of the Class of 2015. -by Grant Norfleet

Fired Up For The Future
Kelly prepares for career as a firefighter, paramedic Since we were kids, we’ve looked up to those who risk their lives for ours: police officers, firefighters and soldiers. As we graduate, we find these heroes among our own student body. Shane Kelly has been working toward his dream of becoming a firefighter since he began training in March 2011 when he joined the Metro West Explorer program. “When I was younger, I saw a hotel that caught on fire and saw the firefighters in action. I thought that was something I wanted to do later on in life. That’s pretty much what kickstarted my path, and I’ve no reason not to continue on,” Kelly said. Kelly currently trains at all five of the Metro West firehouses across West county along with seven other boys. His training includes everything firefighters go through. He participates in live burn training which requires students to enter a burning building. This tests their skills and ability to remain calm and perform under pressure. They also participate in vehicle extrication training in which they practice stabilizing a vehicle, work to efficiently cut a vehicle apart to access a patient and the actual extraction of a patient. “The training is a lot of fun so that’s makes me want to continue on. It ensures me that I’ve made the right decision,” Kelly said. Kelly and his fellow trainees
are also able to go on call and participate on medical emergencies. They are able to participate in everything paid firefighters do except enter a burning building when not related to supervised training. He trains at the firehouse every Saturday. On every other day of the week, he is able to visit, hang out and wait for calls. Neil Matlock is an engineer and paramedic who took over the Explorer program three years ago. He speaks highly of Kelly. “He’s learned a lot since I’ve been here. He’s definitely tried to get out and do more training and hands on work than some of the other guys he trains with,” Matlock said. This June, Kelly will have completed enough training to receive his Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) license which will allow him to begin applying for jobs at local ambulance companies. He will be attending Lindenwood this fall to pursue a degree in Applied Fire Science and Paramedic Technology. Both his college degrees and his EMT license are required for him to become a working firefighter. Kelly looks forward to helping his community and working full time at the firehouse. “It’s my home away from home,” he said.
