There are many more opportunities to experience life besides high school Well, it’s finally here. You thought it would never end, did you? Four long, grueling years of high school complete. Four endless years of late night studying, mediocre cafeteria food and lunch detentions are now in the books. Or, maybe you didn’t think of high school like that. Maybe you’re sad that you attended your last varsity football game ever just several months ago, or that your favorite teacher will no longer be teaching you anymore, just the next group of kids after you. Maybe, you’re sad because you will probably never see like 95 percent of your peers ever again after you graduate. “Wait! I don’t want to leave anymore. Let me stay in high school forever!” You might be saying to yourself. Or maybe I’m just making up a non-existent strawman for the purpose of my argument. Regardless, I want to give a friendly piece of advice to all of my fellow outgoing seniors - Don’t be like the person in that quote.

I’m serious. If you miss one or even several aspects of high school, such as sporting events or your friends, that’s completely understandable. Those are key parts of your life, and at this point you’re only 18 years old, so your time at Lafayette makes up more than a fifth of your existence. But if you’re somebody who is under the impression that high school is the last bastion of happiness and friendship in the world, then you are mistaken. Like I said, you’ve only been alive for about 18 years now. Unless you die in a freak shuffleboard accident or something weird like that, you’re probably going to live for a while. Thanks to advancements in modern medicine, over the next 40 years, the number of people age 100+ in the world is expected to increase ten-fold. 100 years is a lot of time to see the world, meet new people and experience new things. Four years stuck in a cold building doing math problems and chemistry labs doesn’t seem a

highlight of your life, does it? It’s important to never forget fond memories made during your teenage years, but it’s also important to move on from the past. Now, I understand this philosophy may be hard for some people to grasp, or even accept. If only there was a sequel to high school, sort of like a High School II… Oh yeah, there is. It’s called college. Want to go to football games and house parties with your friends all over again, this time learning things in the classroom actually applicable towards your life and career? There’s basically four years of advanced high school waiting for you if you’re not ready to take the full plunge into adulthood. And beyond that, there’s all sorts of opportunities to make friends, whether it be people

Real Talk

seth boester editor in chief from your work, at parties or even something like a beer league softball team. I’m probably rambling, but my point is this - don’t be afraid to leave high school. You have so many more opportunities to make new friends and memories long after this is over, unless you die in that freak shuffleboard accident like I mentioned. Don’t do that.

Taking the risk on becoming who you’ve always wanted to be sabrina ross • reporter As you go through high school you transform. Everything around you starts to change little by little and while you may not notice it at first by the end of senior year when you look back you realize nothing is the same as when you started. Look around you, some people are lucky enough to be surrounded by the same friends they had freshman year, but I bet a majority of you have changed friend groups at least three times, and that’s okay. Transformation is a key part of life without it butterflies would be stuck as caterpillars forever. As we start to go separate ways many relationships and friendships will be tested. Some never transform and others change the second they enter their new dorm. It’s a process that is both eye opening and sometimes heart breaking. Do not let others hold you back from moving on though.

While it is good to remember your roots, remember that the second you graduate it is now your responsibility to chose the path you take. The slate is wiped clean and you are finally free to become the person you were to afraid to become in high school. College is a whole different experience from high school or at least that’s what I’ve been told. Don’t repeat the same mistakes you made in high school just because that’s all you know. A lesson I wish I would’ve learned sooner is that whatever experience you have in life is all determined by you. I’m excited to put that lesson into action and hopefully others will follow me. If you didn’t like how things were in high school then change it when you move on to college or wherever you decide to go. You now have the opportunity to take more chances, create more memories, and let your voice be heard.

Alec Haines: Stop vaping in the bathroom. Jenna Halker: Don’t stress the small stuff. After your four years, you’ll never see any of these people again, and the things that seemed important now, won’t be later on. Coriannis Robinson: Senioritis is real, but whatever you do don’t give up. Erin Rose: Don’t be afraid to yell at the kids standing in the middle of the hallways- they should know better by now. Alex Schrichte: Join a school club, you’ll enjoy yourself and you might meet new people. Mackenzie Stdko-Simon: My biggest advice would be for every senior to do anything and everything. Go to every game, dance, play, musical, or even study group with friends. Try not to take little moments for granted, because this isn’t a time you’ll get back. Also, do a easy second semester. Charlotte Thissen: Get on Mrs. Whit’s good side. Jessica Tremper: Please don’t congregate in the halls. Andie Van House: Go to all the school dances you can! You only have so many. Feeling Inspired

Over the past four years, these individuals have impacted their fellow classmates as voted on by the Class of 2016 Grace Breiten Aaron Chang “Grace is the most selfless person I know. Everything she does is for the benefit of others,” Emma Riordan said. Whether she’s running track or keeping up with school work, Grace Breiten uses her overall positive energy to take on any situation that she encounters. Her friends speak volumes about her. “The other day during practice, there was a girl running behind us. She had us wait for her so we could all run together,” Riordan said. Even though Breiten had to deal with medical issues earlier in the year, she maintained to have a good outlook for the rest of the year. “She has seen [people] through some incredibly tough situations but she always manages to make the best of them. She uses all of her experiences to help others,” Ashley Flynn said.

Tanner Grimm

“I met him forever ago and the first day I met him he was the only other person on the bus and immediately he started talking to me like I’ve know him for years. And he’s optimistic about everything, I don’t think anyone has a bad thing to say about Aaron Chang. He’s always someone you can rely on and trust-worthy, an all-around great guy.” — Grey Huffines

Tanner Grimm is no stranger to competition, but he never forgets the true meaning of the word sportsmanship. As a teammate Grimm is a leader and role model in both football and track. In football, Grimm’s teammates took notice of his attitude and how positively his spirit has affected the team. “Tanner models what every athlete should be on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. He is the most humble person I know that always gives thanks to his teammates. He’s a hard

“Aaron always has a smile on his face, always ready to help you if you don’t understand something in class. He’s very studious and keeps you motivated in school when you’re slacking off. He’s always willing to help, and he’s happy for you when you succeed even if he doesn’t.” —Theunis Gerber

working kid who gives all the glory to God and his teammates,” Ben Bollinger said. Not only does Grimm make an impact while playing, but also behind the scenes by being the backbone for his teams. “During track this year, he hurt his hamstring at the beginning of the season and he hasn’t been able to participate in any of the track meets, but he still comes to all the practices and meets to help coach and cheer on the younger kids. I think that’s probably a big deal for them,” Taylor Grimm said.

Gavin Bruns

Bruns has made his mark through his involvement and the friendships he made here. “I’ve know Gavin the longest, and it’s true he is one of the most inspirational people I know. With the musical, he tried out, got it and had a smile on his face the whole time, and that got everybody else to stay happy even when times were difficult. He was on costumes for a while, which didn’t even interest him, and he tried it and it turned out awesome.” Chris O’Connor Bruns has not only been involved in musicals, but also robotics. “We had a competition where we were the only two seniors, so it was kind of an event where I didn’t know anyone and he was a friend that was there for me the whole time. He’ll always be there to hang out, and support you,” Alex Piccinni.

“She makes light of every situation. She is always more positive when I’m down. She has this ability to make you realize how small your problems are. Fran can go up to anyone and make them feel special. She works hard with everything she does, especially yearbook.” — Allison w
