• Knost, don’t get us wrong you’re cool n’ all that, but we’ve gotta give a shoutout to former Rockwood superintendent Terry Adams for those snow days freshman year. • Best senior prank ever, flooding the entirety of Eureka. • Thanks for all your hard work over these last four years, Dr. Shaughnessey. Have fun mowing your lawn or whatever retired people do. • High-fives all around! Lafayette was named the fourth best high school in Missouri by U.S. News for 2017. Probably because of that lovely graduating Class of 2017, wink wink. • The turf! Other than finding those little black rubber pieces in my shoe a week after stepping foot onto it, it’s pretty sick! • Even though about 90 percent of us haven’t even stepped foot into it, our greenhouse is pretty cool. All that mood lighting, plant growing, and other greenhouse things. • All of our sport teams are seriously so good. Not one Friday night was wasted with our amazing athletes. • Four years of Lancer memories.
• The school wifi. Goodbye forever, see you never. All I ever wanted was to browse Instagram. • Remember when Jostens crowded us in the theatre only to show us embarrassing pictures of us from sophomore year? Don’t bring it up, please. • They pranked us good on day one. Getting rid of early release days as soon as we start high school? Come on, man. You’re better than that. • We’ll never get to taste those gooey chocolate chip cookies from freshman year ever again. I mean it’s been three years already but come on! Thanks (Michelle) Obama. • Oh, real cool guys. Dropping that parking pass price from $180 to $80? Where’d that $100 go? Took ya’ long enough. • We were the first class to have our hallway be changed year by year. Do you even know where the senior hallway is? Are you sure? • The “fish dance,” arguably the most awkward way to be welcomed into high school. • One gripe to us for complaining for all this time, it really wasn’t all that bad, I guess.

You’re you, show it off for the world to see Do not ground yourself in a scenario where you aren’t 110 percent yourself. I know in this day in age reputations are important and all, but if that’s stopping you from doing what you want to do and what you love, then what are you doing? Take care of yourself in a way where you feel in harmony with what you’re doing on an everyday basis and I promise you’ll be surrounded by people you love doing what you love. When I was in middle school I was a pretty shy dude around everyone but whenever I was with my friends, I was really lively. It was easy being this quiet kid throughout all my time in middle
school but it didn’t feel right, I wasn’t acting how I wanted to. Little Jack was too caught up in his head thinking “well, shoot. Everyone knows me as this shy kid, so I guess that’s my life now,” I oughta’ slap myself. Whenever I switched schools and came to Lafayette, it gave me the opportunity to wind back and think about everything. I could really, truly, be myself. It occurred to me: if I wasn’t being myself, then I wouldn’t attract people who like me for who I am and I’d be thrown in some loop of disconcerting or “fake” relationships. I’m not saying take inspiration from me (especially not freshman year Jack) but you get the general
idea. If you’re not living or loving your life, change that. You’re all you’ve got sometimes, treat yourself right. So, seniors, while I’ve got your attention let’s talk about this. We’re all venturing off to different parts of our lives, whether you’re going to college or not. While we’re all jumping into something completely new (or just something that isn’t Lafayette) let’s situate ourselves comfortably into this huge world in a way where we don’t screw ourselves over and everything doesn’t suck. Be yourself and people who love you will follow.

This is going to be one of the biggest transitions in our lives, maybe even the last transition into the real world for some of us. So what should we do? Be ourselves. Get out there, try new things, be a weirdo, embarrass yourself, make mistakes and don’t be afraid
Once an athlete, always an athlete Kayley Allen editor in chief
A mixture of sweat, tears and dirt cakes our faces. We hang our heads low as we walk quietly to the locker room alongside our teammates. We look around and take in this very moment because we won’t get another one like it ever again. This is what it felt like to play in the last game as a lancer, and for a lot of us, the rest of our lives. Many of us were forced to hang up our cleats for the last time this year. While this does mean that wearing the word “Lancer” across our chest is over, it’s safe to say that sports have shaped some of us into who we are today. Just because we are starting a new chapter in our lives soon doesn’t mean we should abandon
everything that our sport has taught us. We should continue to live by the rules of our favorite games. As cliche as it is, sports have taught us to work as a team to accomplish one goal, and value other people’s talents and dedication along the way. Teamwork and staying humble are effective tools that we should continue to apply to our lives. Being able to look at your coworkers or classmates and praise them for their good work is extremely important in the real world. Sports also teach people how to take criticism, and to become better from it instead of letting it tear us apart. Looking at stats and tapes
after a tough game was one of the worst feelings, but it always showed me what I needed to do to a better player. This can be applied off the field as well. Being able to look at your mistakes, fully accept them and then move on from them is something not everyone can do. Holding on to your ability to take criticism will be rewarding in the long run. As we all take our last at bat, run across our final finish line or say our last “Lancers on three,” we should plan to stay athletes in our actions and way of thinking. I wouldn’t trade anything for the time I’ve spent with my teammates and the lessons that I’ve learned along the way.
Your life doesn’t end at graduation As the years we have shared inside of the walls of Lafayette come to a close, the bittersweet melody of “Thank God” and “I’m gonna miss this so much” inside of our heads ring louder than ever. For most of us, it isn’t hard to proclaim we won’t miss the drama and shenanigans of high school. However, it’s not time to wish your whole life away. For some odd reason, I became saddened when I read through senior future plans on the sheets passed out for this booklet. It seemed like almost everyone saw themselves in debt, married with two kids, or working a job in 10 years. While this is realistic, it isn’t what I believe we should all settle
for.
Why would you want to be ordinary when you can make the most of your life? Most of us will be 27 or 28 in 10 years, so why are we looking to be so content with a seemingly ordinary life? We gawk at people all over the internet and TV living lavish lives, traveling all over the world. So why would we not strive to excite our future and spark a start of nonconformity? Granted, the majority of our class is going to college to get a degree to get a job; why does your youthfulness have to end at college graduation? Does living your life stop because you’ve had your fair
share of mindless partying? People are so scared to live life to the fullest because of what others think, but why? Sometimes following the traditional route of life isn’t the way to find peace with what you’ve become and what you’re going to do. As you move on to whatever path you chose for your life, make it your own. Stand out in the crowd, but still be true to yourself. As cheesy as it sounds, you only have one life so make the best of it. I learned from one of the best teachers that the most reward you can get in life is going out and living it to your fullest. See the world for the beauty it is.

Nosal receives music department award Jack Deubner opinions editor Balancing his time between marching band, pit orchestra, home court advantage, winter drumline, jazz band, symphonic band, Tuesday night rock band and an AP packed school schedule, senior Charlie Nosal hasn’t missed his beat throughout his entire high school career. Since freshman year, Nosal has been heavily involved with the music department at Lafayette, starting his day off with jazz band and ending it with marching band. “I started jazz band, marching band and pretty much everything since freshman year,” Nosal said. Nosal sets his musical focus on playing guitar and percussion instruments for his various musical endeavors. “It’s pretty 50-50 [between guitar and percussion.] It

depends on what time of the year it is. If it’s during marching band I’m definitely spending more time with the drum or keyboard stuff but during second semester I’m more focused on guitar with pit orchestra and Tuesday night rock band,” Nosal said. Being so involved since day one of Nosal’s career at Lafayette, he’s worked his way up in the musical hierarchy of the school and in his own personal endeavors. “I’ve definitely gained a lot of confidence through all the things I’ve been in, I still get a little nervous every time before I perform but with things like
improvising I’ve definitely grown way more confident,” Nosal said. With all of Nosal’s after school involvements and dedication, he often had some scheduling conflicts. “I signed myself up for enough after school things to where they conflicted with each other. My freshman year thursday jam band conflicted with pit orchestra, but I still dedicated time to practice what music I needed to for those groups. Now during my senior year the loads of home work are way different where I have five AP classes. I’ve got a Google Calendar that has like 50,000 events on it to help me schedule everything going on.” Rewarding his heavy involvement in the music department, all the music directors of the department chose Nosal to receive the first Music Department Award during Senior Awards Night.
Receiving the award “was a rush,” Nosal said. The award was given out to put a student in the limelight to congratulate his or her work, based off of accomplishments and involvements in the various fields of the music department. This was the first time to department has given out an award at Senior Awards Night and Nosal was the prime candidate for his dedication to his varying participation in the field.

Not all our classmates this year will be attending a university after they walk across the stage this May. Some will be shedding the civilian life and donning the uniform of one of the branches of the United States military.
Justin Van Buren One of these students is Justin Van Buren. He is currently a member of the Missouri National Guard. On June 10, Van Buren will be going to Fort Leonard Wood, MO to complete basic training. Next, Van Buren will take part in specialty school to be a military policeman. After he finishes both basic and specialty school he will take advantage of the GI Bill and attend Wildwood Community College. f After that, he hopes to be sent to Fort Benning, GA for Infantry and Ranger school. Van Buren has chosen this path for his life because, “I have always loved and have always wanted to protect and serve my country.” Van Buren’s love for his country is what drives his aspirations to protect and serve. “I feel like I was put on Earth for one reason, and that one reason is to terminate the enemies infringing on our way of life.”

Claire Bueckendorf Claire Bueckendorf plans to enlist in the Navy after May 19, and work toward becoming an officer in the Naval Nuclear Engineering program. “I am the youngest of five kids and we have always done the same thing – same sports, same classes. I want to do something just for myself and joining the military is going to be that for me,” Bueckendorf said. Enrolled in ROTC for the past three years, she recognizes the need for the skills she already has. In addition, she said “I didn’t want to go through four years of
sitting in a college classroom, I want to be working toward my goal through hands-on training,” she said.
Asia Dudley Asia Dudley is also an active participant in the ROTC program. She has said that she wants to join the Air Force, just like her cousin. “He was a better person after he got back. I really want to see what it’s like,” Dudley said. Going a non-traditional route is
what Dudley is looking for. “I see the Air Force as much more exciting and unpredictable than college. Starting on a base and learning to be an engineer, a welder or even a pilot sounds like much more fun than sitting in a classroom,” Dudley said. Many of her goals and morals reflect in her desire to join the Air Force. “If you like saving people and standing up for what you believe in, the military is a good influence,” Dudley said.

The loss of a classmate is never easy. For Megan Armstrong, losing one of her best friends sophomore year was a devastating. “Noah was one of those people that you always wanted to be around,” Armstrong said. “He welcomed me into Lafayette as if he knew everything about me and it was great to have someone right there when needed.” Armstrong said she felt inspired by Noah, to take charge in her actions and always be happy and laugh like he did. Marlo McElroy receives Lancer Award at Senior Award Night Arpan Das time I turned around, it “ Every reporter was like déjà vu, Marlo was Every year, one senior is awarded with the Lancer Award. This prestigious award is given to the person that embodies what it truly means to be a Lafayette Lancer. The people who are awarded are top students, model citizens in society and, really, people who are excellent leaders in everything they do. Nominated for the 2017 Lancer Award were Alexa Culver, Sarah Frederick, Jack Mazza and Marlo McElroy. McElroy was nominated by Physical Education teacher and 2017 Lafayette Teacher of the Year, Denise Meyer. “I have had classes with Mrs. Meyer since sophomore year and I tend to stop by her office a lot because she is so fun to be around and truly cares about me. I am also a member of Lancers Helping Lancers, the club that she sponsors, and we have truly bonded through that,” McElroy said. Meyer herself mentioned something unique about Marlo that she calls the Marlo déjà vu effect. “The bottom line is, every time I turned around, I saw Marlo doing something for somebody else. I’d be walking down the hallway and she’d be in the process of helping, whether it’s Lancers Helping Lancers or being in the process of helping organize the Special

because she’s a big part of our school and a lot of the things that go on here.” Meyer said, “It’s really cool that as I noticed that she was doing so much for so many other people I started asking other teachers in the building, ‘What does Marlo do for you?’ and all of them could not say enough about how she specifically was motivated and directed their clubs and activities whether is be honor society or others. She’s just amazing. She’s everywhere.”

Graduating seniors share future aspirations Kayley Allen editor in chief For many seniors, the dream after high school is to attend college or pursue something they’re interested in, eventually landing them in a decent job that can provide for them. With this said, many seniors are setting big goals for their plans after high school. Whether you’ve seen him on stage representing Lafayette Theater Company, or being the emcee for this year’s Academic Pep Assembly, it’s safe to say that Peyton Boyd loves performing in front of an audience. Aside from aspiring to complete intense medical training in the field of neuroscience, Boyd also aspires to be in an actor. “I can see myself in two ways. I either see myself doing my residency and continuing my medical training, or starring in an Oscar-nominated film,” Boyd said. Boyd said the steps to achieving this goal is to start small and build his way up. “In the acting industry you have to do a lot of minor roles, like being extras in films, then slowly build your way up, and then doing bigger roles. Just slowly building up your resume and getting more opportunities to audition for different things that have bigger names and reputations attached to it. You have to start small and build your way up,” Boyd said. In the fall, Boyd will attend Vanderbilt University to major in either neuroscience or psychology. It’s not uncommon for an animal lover to aspire to one day be a veterinarian; however, Kathryn Kamrud’s dreams are a bit bigger.
“My dream is to open up my own practice with two or three other vets,” Kamrud said. Eventually running an animal clinic or hospital is Kamrud’s main goal. She said her love for animals has been with her for as long as she could remember. “Ever since I was a little girl I’ve dreamed about making people’s lives a little bit better by helping their pets. It’s just crazy to me that I’m starting to actually make it happen,” she said. In the fall, Kamrud plans to attend Murray State to major in preveterinary sciences, and then plans to further her education at the University of Missouri-Columbia for veterinary school. In the fall, John Hardie plans to attend the University of Kansas to study architecture; however, his backup plan reveals another passion of his. “If architecture doesn’t work out, I would want to be a storm chaser. I really enjoy scary storms and things like that. I’ve been obsessed with the movie Twister since I was little, so that kind of sparked my interest,” Hardie said. Hardie said he is not be afraid of storm or tornadoes and one day would love to have a T.V show based on his adventures storm chasing. “I don’t think my mom would like me storm chasing, but I’d be safe. Even if I do become an architect, I would still love to chase storms as a side job or hobby,” Hardie said.

Bridges McElmurry plans mission trip after his graduation Megan McFarland reporter
Although the majority of graduating seniors head off to either a two year community college or a four year university, some students opt to take less traditional routes to reach their future goals. Bridges McElmurry, for example, will be taking a gap year to go on a mission trip to an Indian Reservation in Yakima,
Washington to do ministry. There, he will be spending his time as a teacher and mentor to children on the reservation by teaching them about God and leading them in a small group setting. Additionally, he will be helping the community of the reservation by partaking in manual labor jobs with the older demographic. McElmurray will leave for his mission trip in August and most likely will return in January. Although McElmurray will be
embarking on this trip by himself, he will be meeting a leader of the ministry there in Washington who is a friend of his father’s. Ultimately, when McElmurray returns, he might go to Missouri State University if the option is still available; however, his goal is to become a full time missionary in the future so he plans to pursue that in the most effective way possible. McElmurray said, “This is the perfect opportunity to emerge myself in a different community
and learn how to serve selflessly and grow as a Christian. It will also help me see what type of ministry I want to be in later in life.” So while McElmurray might not be taking the traditional approach to obtaining his career goal in attending a two or four year college, he is adamantly pursuing his goals in becoming a missionary by taking his trip to the Indian Reservation of Yakima.
