High school doesn’t last a whole lifetime

A

t the start of freshman year, we were told that high school was going to be some of the best years of our lives and to enjoy it while it lasts.

At the end of senior year, that’s not entirely true.

Going into high school, I was so excited for this newfound freedom and getting rid of the awkward stage of middle school.

Walking through those doors for the first time, I was finally happy to start fresh. I mean, without realizing the fact that I would still see the people from my old school everyday. But even at this new stage of high school, everything still seemed to remain the same.

Everyone still stuck with the people they knew from middle school, there was still separation between different interests,

nothing really was new besides a little more freedom.

Sometimes sticking with something you’re used to isn’t a bad thing. It makes you feel more comfortable and guarded instead of facing an oncoming situation on your own.

At some point, there comes a time where those people or things aren’t going to be there to help you.

The other night, I asked my mom what she remembers from high school.

To be honest, she didn’t have much to say. There were a few memories that stood out, but the rest seemed to be all a blur.

Life is not all about high school. Maybe at the moment it is, but at some point, you will have to move on. There might be a couple friends you’ll stay connected with and there will be a couple you will lose along

the way. In the end, 10 years from now, life will be completely different to what it is now.

So get over that one time at lunch where you were ignored, move on from the time where your friends left you out.

If you don’t let go of these grudges, then you’ll never be able to keep moving forward.

Every one of us matters and all of us have potential to do whatever we want to do with our lives. Let’s not get hungup on the little things that are holding us back from reaching that potential. This is our chance for a change.

High school is now coming to an end, so enjoy it while it lasts, but these are not going to be the only best years of your life. This was just the beginning.

Be ready for upcoming opportunities and challenges coming your way.

For better or worse, it’s coming to an end

I

t may seem strange, but I’m not on the edge of my seat waiting to begin college.

While I am ready to graduate, I’m also not waving ‘sayonara’ to high school in my rear-view mirror either.

At the beginning of this year, I was completely unprepared to graduate, let alone go to college.

Those concepts seemed like a world away, so I pushed them to the side for the time being.

After all, there were roughly 180 school days separating me and graduation, so there was no need to stress myself out about the future.

Although at times, high school can seem like a neverending cycle of long days at school and even longer nights laboring over homework. the days and nights do add up, much more quickly than expected.

Now, graduation beckons.

One of the most intimidating aspects of completing high school is that all of my accomplishments these past four years are laid out on the table.

This has given me ample opportunity to reflect on my experiences.

Oftentimes, this has led to not only a sense of pride at what I have achieved but also a tinge of disappointment at what I didn’t.

I have so much time and hard work invested in school that it has seemed somewhat abrupt that my journey here is coming to a close.

Just when I have become completely comfortable with my role at school, I am preparing to transition to a entirely new life.

That is another factor that is so daunting.

In my 18 years on this earth, I have been blessed with a great

life. I have supportive family and friends, and I have received a wonderful education.

I am very appreciative of all that I have and am at ease with my life right now.

The environment I’ve been in has remained relatively the same my whole life. Thus, I am not champing at the bit to enter college right away because it is difficult to say goodbye to life as I know it.

While graduation may signal the end of high school, it is also a marker for the next chapter in our lives.

This new change leads to readjustment and finding a place in the world all over again, but I suppose that’s life.

High school has reached its culmination. As I reflect on my four years at Lafayette the good, the bad and everything in between, I have no choice but to prepare myself for the future that lies ahead.

Mistakes will be made, embrace, don’t erase

Y

ou’re here, and you’re done. They say high school is the best four years of your teenage years, but are they?

From awkward relationships to the Freshman Fish Dance, who would fondly look back at high school? Even as seniors, we wince when we remember our immature selves during our freshman year.

Rather than trying to forget about that god-forsaken school photo or the one time you called your teacher “mom,” embrace those cringe-worthy moments.

They’ve shaped you into who you are right now. You learn from your mistakes, so instead of shutting them away, dwell on them.

See what you did wrong so that next time, you won’t make the same blunder.

No one wants to be the kid that didn’t mature during high school, so no matter how hard it is to look back onto your mistakes, do it.

However, there’s the high possibility that one might get attached to the memory, making it more difficult to move on.

You can’t change the past, and what’s done is done. Acknowledge your mistakes, so you come to terms with them rather than shove them into a dark corner.

It’s a thin line between forgiving and forgetting, and sometimes, forgetting sure looks like acknowledgement.

To make sure you haven’t

fooled yourself, use these three tips as a guideline: When you think about the awkward memories, is there an overwhelming sense of embarrassment or peace? Do you continue to fret about the multitudes of opportunities in that situation?

Are you able to take what you learned and apply it to real life situations?

By using those questions, you should be able to deduce if you’ve forgiven or forgotten.

Now, as you stand on that stage to receive your diploma, think about your mistakes, the people you’ve hurt, and the people that you love.

In a way, they’ve helped you go from an immature fourteenyear-old to a young adult, ready to conquer life.

Go be problem solvers, not just test-takers

S

ince grade school, we’ve been trained to revolve our lives around a grade—one letter which is supposed to dictate our success for the rest of our lives.

Now sure, grades are important (I have certainly made them a priority through my school career), but in college, I challenge you to go beyond the basic requirement to just perform well on tests.

Anyone can do that.

What really impresses people is how you act within a novel situation and what you’re going to do with that experience.

We’re so accustomed to structured assessments and aptitude exams that real-world skills aren’t given as much thought.

Plus, let’s be honest, we can train for ACTs and SATs, so much so that maybe getting good scores on those tests just isn’t very impressive anymore.

After all, those test scores are luck-of-the-draw and don’t truly predict college success.

The college experience isn’t going to fit into some neat little bubbled-in box. We can’t practice for it, and there’s no prep book. If so, anyone would do it. Know, it will be different for all of us and take us away from our comfort zones.

This is the problem-solving I referred to earlier, and it’s what will really matter. You must find a way to stand out rather than being so wrapped up in going through the motions of another quiz, test or final.

Keep in mind, everyone in college is studying. Just doing the same doesn’t get you anywhere.

Go find groups to join where you can actually apply your knowledge or people skills beyond a classroom setting.

That’s what internships will care about and what jobs will look for.

We’re already not like everyone else: we’re Lancers, and I know we’re prepared to do great things, but how will you stand out, how will you be different?

College is far from real life, but treat it as such.

Prove you can go beyond where the rest will go and dare to meet greater challenges than just what is asked of you.

Olivia Stebner: Mr. Willard has been my biggest inspiration throughout high school. He has such a kind heart and strives to help his students succeed in everything they do, inside and outside of the classroom.

Special classmates serve as inspiration for seniors Natalia Acosta: Alyssa Hahn because of all the wonderful work she has done with Lancers Helping Lancers and because of the amazing friend she is.

Thomas Antolik: Chris Harstick for being a nice guy.

Emily Arciszewski: Landon Zechman because he has been faced with many difficulties but still manages to be proud of who he is, does what makes him happy in life, stays true to himself and genuinely supports those who have made a positive difference in his life.

Mohammed Aydi: The closest friend I had, Andy Keithley. He inspired me so much over the many years I knew him and continues to inspire till this day.

Madison Balice: Morgan Balice because she hasn’t stopped working to maintain her GPA and grades since the first day of school.

Morgan Balice: I find Madison Balice to be most inspiring for her hard work and dedication to work, school and everything that she does. She gives everything her all which inspires me to do the same.

Mitch Bingaman: Scott as he struggled with his back.

Alicja Blaszczyk: Uche Ijei because she can always cheer you up, and she is such a positive and kind person to everyone she meets!

Connor Bond: Matt Dunbar because although he was in class 50 percent of the time, he got a better grade than me.

Mason Bond: Myself. I am in fact the best person that I know.

He can solve a Rubik’s cube like no other.

Michael Brown: Josh Altermatt for always keeping his head up after he tore his ACL. Zoe Brunk: Ala Blaszczyk because she didn’t let cancer get in her way.

Tyler Burnett: Christopher DiCarlo because he joined the National Guard and will be giving up his time and risking his life for America’s freedom and safety.

Alec Byous: Ryan Novak. All the things he has overcome the past 2-3 years and where he is now are

something nobody can nor ever will match.

Kelly Campbell: Alyssa Hahn. She’s incredibly kind and friendly with everyone, student or staff. Not only does she have the personality, but she keeps up good grades in difficult classes.

Kane Carpenter: Rohan Bohra. The joy and positivity that he would bring to school everyday inspires me just to face the day with a smile.

He is the most genuine person in our class.

Claire Caubre: Liam Newman. He always has a good attitude and a smile on his face.

Kristen Clark: Meghan Conroy. She finds the best in everybody and always has a smile on her face.

Nina Clark: Anna Samsanov is incredibly passionate and empathetic.

Erin Coogan: Ala Blaszczyk because she overcame cancer and is just an amazing person.

Lily Cooper: Isabelle Snyder. Not only is she hilarious and talented, but she is deeply kind. She’s been through so much and yet she has a heart of solid gold.

Kathryn Craddock: This question is really tough. I can’t isolate just one class member. Lafayette contains so many individuals that aren’t just good students but are good people.

Dominic DeProspero: Josh Altermatt. After tearing his ACL, he worked really hard and came back from his injury very quickly.

Andrew Duke: Nassim Oufattole.

His enthusiasm and drive are aweinspiring.

Amanda Dunn: Kristy Armstrong because she is always positive.

Jordan Evans: Claire Rougeau.

She manages to get through the school day despite her phobia of obnoxious gum chewers.

Adam Flannigan: My best friends and guitar classmates because they always push me my hardest and are always there for me when I need it.

Calia Gammill: Myself because if you don’t inspire yourself, how can you be successful?

Adam Gass: Rohan Bohra because he was Homecoming King, which means literally anything is possible.

You’re seriously the bomb though, and one day I hope to be as smart, charming, athletic, suave, funny, humble and good looking as you.

Zachary George: Chris DiCarlo. He is always optimistic and putting a positive spin on any situation.

Will Gerretsen: Cameron Carpenter is always smiling and friendly to

anyone he meets.

Sean Glaze: Jake Malven. Dude is a grinder both on the field and in the classroom.

Alexis Godefroid: Alyssa Hahn because she has done so much for Lancers Helping Lancers and it really would not be what it is today without her.

Megan Greenstein: Lily Cooper and Rohan Bohra were both so motivational, and they always give me the best advice Hayden Haggerty: Nico Schweikert because it’s not his first rodeo.

Myiah Hall: Katlyn Lumpkins who has been by my side since freshman year. Can’t find ‘em like that in high school.

Lauren Hance: Ala Blaszczyk because she fought something deadly and didn’t let it win.

Allie Harrell: Clara Tarpey because she has a never-give-up mentality that everyone could learn from!

Lydia Harris: Ala Blaszczyk. She overcame so much throughout these last few years and has done it without hesitation.

Christopher Harstick: Josh Altermatt. After tearing his ACL and losing his senior season, he continued to support the team and never put his head down.

Samantha Hegger: London Smith because she is always positive with a smile on her face.

Clayton Henning: Colin Mohlman.

He is always genuine and honest.

Yes, he is weird, but he is still who he is and shows that off. I have great respect for him and often strive to be that genuine.

Aidan Henry: Jakob Molskness.

He balanced a heavy workload of academics with being a great friend to those around him and creating meaningful connections, as well as participating in numerous extracurriculars and participating in student government.

Zylanae Henry: Bri Jones because she went through a lot of struggles and ended up graduating early.

Nick Hoffman: Josh Altermatt because he fought through his torn ACL. Zoe Hormell: Cali Gammill because she’s never afraid to be herself and she strives to accomplish all of her goals.

Maclaine Hunt: Jake Malven. He’s an absolute unit.

Uche Ijei: Jordyn Terry because she inspired me that laughing through your pain is always better than crying through it.

Camden Jaggie: Josh Altermatt. He

overcame a serious injury to better himself as a person.

Aaliyah Johnson: My twin sister Rashelle Johnson because she has had to deal with many challenges throughout the past four years, yet she has persevered through it all and came out stronger.

Elizabeth Johnson: I found Kate Wilson to be the most inspiring because she is an all around great, genuine person. She also doesn’t care what other people think about her, so she will do what makes her happy regardless of who is around her.

Bryce Jones: Morgan Lawton. Her hard work and dedication to learn has inspired me to continue trying, even against all odds.

Caroline Karsten: Ala Blaszczyk.

She always has a smile on her face and cheers people up wherever she goes. She continues to push herself to be the best person she can be even after all she’s been through.

Katherine Karsten: Ala Blaszczyk because she has gone through so much and still manages to accomplish anything she puts her mind to it and keeps a bright smile on her face.

Erin Keiter: René Ruppert because she never lets me fall, literally!

Emma Grant. She had donuts the first day we met. More importantly, she’s been my best friend, my sister and my guide through the past 12 years. I’m beyond grateful to know she is always a phone call or a tensecond “slight jog” away!

He’s the most reliable person I know. If he says he’s going to do something, he will.

Abbas Khan: Jakob Molskness.

Braden King: Abbas Khan because he is so smart and balances school work with so many clubs and being VP of our class while being social and playing sports.

William Landolt: Myself, not trying to be arrogant, but because I came to this high school with not very many friends and now know everyone. I came here not very strong in my faith and I leave stronger than I have ever been in my faith. I came here serving myself and I leave to go serve my country.

Heather Rigg: Drew Leslie inspires me because he’s a natural leader, and he makes others feel a lot of loyalty towards him without even trying.

Claire Rougeau: Kate Wilson. I’ve never met anyone who can keep such a positive attitude no matter what or how much is stressing them out.

Nina Ruan: Ala Blaszczyk because even though she had cancer, she always had an unwavering spirit where she didn’t give up on her grades or her other passions.

Rene Ruppert: Katie Sulzner, who

went through two hip surgeries and received the Presidential Scholarship at Missouri State University despite her pain. She’s truly inspiring.

Anna Samsonov: Lily Cooper. She has gone through so much, yet is still able to be strong and full of love and hope. She’s going to go on to do amazing things.

Shruthi Sangameswaran: Ala Blaszczyk. She’s gone through some really tough times, and despite that, she has continually worked hard.

Drew Sawyer: Scott Thoelke inspired me through his dedication in AP Stat and AP HUG. Andrew Schoenfelder: William Gerretson. I’ve been friends with him since middle school, he’s such a cool dude and being in classes and working with him has been a joy.

Catherine Schrichte: Steve Fuller because I aspire to have hair as pretty as his.

Christian Schweikert: Every one of my friends in the senior class making it through the very first part of life. Life has just began my friends. Let’s make something happen.

Isabelle Snyder: Alyssa Hahn. She is one of the best people I know: kind, caring, relatable, funny, smart, responsible, true to herself and a true pal.

Corryne Sontag: London Smith because she is always positive and happy.

Jimmy Spriggs: Aidan Henry inspires me everyday in all ways imaginable.

Atul Srinivasan: Ala Blaszczyk because she battled through cancer yet was still able to excel in her classes.

Cole Staehling: I found Philip Tannfelt to be the most inspiring to me since he is a very bright kid and always has a positive attitude.

Olivia Stebner: Katie Sulzner because she went through two hip surgeries in a matter of two months.

She keeps up with her school work, manages to get amazing grades and always walks around with a smile on her face. In addition, she was awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Missouri State University despite all of her set backs. Katie is someone I look up to everyday.

Gavin Stulce: Spencer Stewart because he worked harder than anyone else to make sure he took

my spot on the starting lineup sophomore year while I slacked.

Shwetha Sundarrajan: Rohan Bohra. He was the last person I’d expect to be crowned Homecoming King.

Clara Tarpey: Allie Harrell. Even after being concussed after her horse fell and she slammed her head on the ground, she still managed to make it through AP Bio. Wiatt Thissen: Ryan Novak. His ability to persevere and succeed through adversity is something that can be admired.

Delaney Thomas: Andy Keithley and Lawrence Strawbridge. Though we lost them both way too early, they inspire me to be the best I can be everyday and to live my life to the very fullest because no one knows how long they have left.

James Truong: Myself. I see the sense of pride and yearn to sate my thirst of ambition. I see the mistakes and failures that help me to grow as a person. I see the pain that consumes me and I have people that will support me through my journey.

Seniors have some words of advice for future classes Emma Abernathy: Good things take time. That is a great motto to the present and future underclassmen of Lafayette.

Natalia Acosta: Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Thomas Antolik: Do your homework kids.

Emily Arciszewski: Participate in school activities. It might seem lame, but those are the memories you will look back on when you think of high school.

Stephany Arvizures: Enjoy high school because college is completely different and more challenging.

Mohammed Aydi: Be yourself and surround yourself with people who have similar aspirations as yourself.

Sarah Aydi: Friends aren’t forever.

Luke Bader: Quit vaping in the bathrooms.

Madison Balice: Not everything is as bad in the long run. We tend to think things are worse than they are. Don’t stress the small stuff.

Mitch Bingaman: Participate in Homecoming Week, and start sports recruiting early (sophomore year).

Kylie Black: Sleep. If the choice is between studying and sleep, choose sleep.

McKenna Blackwell: Being childish isn’t cute.

Alicja Blaszczyk: Don’t worry about what others think of you or about being liked. Just do your own thing, and you will attract true friends.

Rohan Bohra: Homework is optional, A’s are not. Choose wisely.

Hayden Bollinger: Don’t stress high school, it’s not that serious.

Mason Bond: Take easy classes your senior year.

James Bowman: The school clock is either on time or five minutes off on any given day.

Jacqueline Boyd: Get your credits out of the way early so you can take blow off classes during senior year.

Parker Bray: Have fun, and enjoy the little things because it will be over before you know it.

Michael Brown: Make senior year easy.

yourself up for success. Take those college level classes, study hard to maintain a good GPA and, if you’re schedule allows it, get a parttime job to learn how businesses operate and so you can begin to build your resume.

Jessica Busiek: Enjoy it while it lasts, even if you hate it. You will miss it!

Alec Byous: Work hard, and focus on your grades early because that’s your foundation. Also, be involved in the LHS community.

Alexa Campbell: High school is not everything.

Kelly Campbell: It’s only four years, y’all can do it.

Jessica Cargill: Don’t get upset about the little things, not everything is going to go your way.

Claire Caubre: Respect your teachers. They work hard and want you to succeed.

Connor Church: Don’t go crazy.

Kristen Clark: Go to all the dances, even though people say they’re lame. They’re not.

Erin Coogan: If you have a job, take CCE as a senior. It is a life saver being able to leave early.

Jordyn Cosman: High school goes by really fast. Enjoy every moment.

Megan Cox: Run to your car after school, avoid parking lot traffic at all costs, parents think they should have the right of way and go first and then the sophomores who just got their license don’t know how the parking lot works.

Kayla Greene: Take advantage of all the opportunities and hard classes here, but don’t forget you still have a life outside of school.

Megan Greenstein: Life’s more fun with friends. Blow off your homework once in a while, and live a bit before high school’s over.

Kendra Hackman: Do what you can, while you can. Tt goes fast.

Hayden Haggerty: Not everything you read on a Snapple cap is true.

Aidan Henry: The best thing you can do in high school is balancing your challenging courses with creating meaningful relationships and experiences through friends, hobbies and/or romantic relationships.

Zylanae Henry: Don’t be all about your friendships and worry about all the plans that you have with your friends because at the end of the day, you’re the only one that is going to be able to cross that stage. Nobody else.

Nick Hoffman: Go to all sporting events, and be in as many clubs as possible.

Hailee Holt: Join clubs! I regret not being a part of more things.

Allyson Howard: No matter how hard it gets, never give up.

Maclaine Hunt: Learn how to stand in a lunch line.

Chloe Hutchison: The moment you walk through those doors on the first day count!

Uche Ijei: A man without sauce is lost, but the same man can get lost in the sauce. Stay focused.

Rashelle Johnson: Focus on being the best person you can be. Don’t let anyone or anything distract you from that goal.

Aaliyah Johnson: It’s okay to relax. School isn’t everything.

Natalie Johnson: Make friends with your teachers, and try to have good relationships with them.

Bryce Jones: Everyone wants to help you. You just have to let them.

Caroline Karsten: Take all the classes that interest you. Branch out of your comfort zone.

Ty Prozorowski: Don’t wait to read 200+ pages of Pride and Prejudice until the night before the book is due. You’ll fall asleep reading at 11 p.m. and wake up at 3 a.m. with 100 pages to go.

Kevin Qi: Participate in a team activity before you leave school.

Lina Qi: Don’t be afraid to try new passions, take each chance as a opportunity to grow and make things happen!

Rithik Reddy: Engage with your teachers. They have so much more than simple class material that they can teach you.
