It’s been real In the words of Bilbo Baggins, “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” That’s pretty much exactly how I feel about the Class of 2014. Honestly, I don’t know who half of you are, nor do I care. For me, friends have come and gone over the years. I probably couldn’t remember the names of a majority of the senior class if I tried. I’m sure I’m a stranger to most people in our grade and frankly, that doesn’t matter. What does matter is that we’re all here now, graduating. And though a majority of us might be complete strangers to one another, we were “all in this together,” as they say. Call me a Transcendentalist if you will, but I personally believe that all people are connected in some way, especially when they are forced to coexist in the same establishment for as long as we have been. I hate littering a column with

too many quotes, but to credit John Donne, “No man is an island.” As stupid as it sounds, we were all connected during our time at Lafayette. alexlamar Even if we did not really know each other, we –opinions editor– most likely interacted in some way at some point in these it’s time for us to go our separate past four years. Maybe I borrowed a pencil ways. I’m sure that some of the from you for an exam, or we sat friends I have now will remain next to each other in Geometry freshman year, or maybe the only close to me all through college interaction that has ever been and maybe even for the rest of between us is a few unintentional my life. I’m also sure that a lot seconds of awkward eye contact. of the friends I have now will Maybe I hated you. Maybe you eventually lose contact. I’ve lost a few friends already. Such is life. hated me. It’s nothing personal, it’s just Whatever our situation was, that from now on, it’s completely as many students as there are in our class, there’s no way that we up to us to decide who will remain all didn’t have a subtle influence in our lives for years to come on each other somehow. We and who will become a distant were all connected, but now that memory tied to the school we once shared. connection is being severed. It’s all about the choices we I know it’s the most cliché thing to say for graduation, but make and the path we take from

now on, but you already knew that. Lafayette was a catalyst; an insuperable (albeit loose for some) tie that kept us all together. But now that we’re leaving, that tie will be gone forever and with it will die the subtle influences we’ve had on each other. Again, we weren’t all best friends or whatever, but we were all in the same boat if you think about it, which is kind of cool. I’m not saying I enjoyed my entire time at LHS and I definitely wouldn’t relive high school if I had the chance, but I’m glad that I went. I’m glad that I did the things I did, met the people I met and made whatever decisions I made to get me where I am today. In lament terms, it wouldn’t have been the same without you (whoever you are). It was long and it was tough and there were times when I truly felt alone, even though I wasn’t. It was one hell of a ride and I’m so glad that I shared it with all of you.

The struggle is real. I feel as though my farewell should be greatly poetic and meaningful or incredibly spiteful, naming all of the people who have wronged me. The truth is that I am indifferent about my high school experience. It was nothing grand, nor was it anything terrible. There were times when I just wanted to be done with it all and there were times where I felt as though these were the best times of my life. Sure, there were some people who annoyed me on a regular basis quite frequently and there is a good chance that I was just as annoying to them. There were teachers who I felt were in the wrong profession and there were teachers who were great at their job and made the idea of learning seem interesting and fun. No one’s glory days should be in high school.

credibly young right now. There is so much more to look forward to, so we should not spend our time looking back at our lives as teenagers in high school. That’s not to say that we should not be proud of all of our accomplishments and the fun times we had. Some of my greatest accomplishments occurred in high school. There are things that I will never forget about my time at Lafayette. Making it to state my senior year on the golf team was unreal and incredibly exciting. Joining the Image my freshman year was one of the best decisions I ever made, as I was able to find new friendships and strengthen my love of writing. But if I choose to dwell on those memories, it will be that much harder to make new ones. The truth is that I am excited about college for more reasons

than one. College gives us the ability to not only further our education but to really find out what we want to do with our lives. Sure, at times it will be scary to “venture into the unknown.” For those of us going to school out of state, one of the most difficult things to adjust to will be being away from home. And to those going to school in state, one of the most difficult thing will be branching out and making new friendships instead of only sticking with those you knew in high school. College should be a new start where you get to be anyone you want to be. The only thing that will stay the same is your name and that’s it. We should be excited about leaving high school. Yes it will be sad to leave our friends and everything we find comfortable, but it is time for us to be brave and become adults.

I’m Just Sayin’

It will only get better from here on out Let Me Tell You gabbymcdaris –editor in chief– High school is a journey full of stress and anxiety and hormones and at times is often too much for one person to handle. College is when you are actually leaning for your future. You are studying what relates to your wanted profession and that should be an exciting thing. People will say these are the best days of our lives. They are lying. If your best days were in high school, you need to shoot for higher goals. Believe it or not, we are in-

Seniors leave words of advice for peers Madison Axford: You’ll get through any test or teacher, don’t worry or be upset about something, because in the long run it’s not worth it. Kimberly Baich: Stay focused even when you are close to the end, you must stay focused and finish strong. Charlie Bischoff: Each year your group will shrink, but you will see who your true friends are. Jessica Brown: Don’t procrastinate! Jake Burt: Graduate as early as possible. Danielle Christian: Keep a healthy balance between school, friends and yourself...all three are important. Taylor Cohen: Don’t stress about big decisions, just go with what you feel and what makes you most comfortable and excited for the future. Meagan Davies: Get involved in a sport or activity, even if you are shy it will develop your social skills and create bonds you will remember even after you leave. McKinzie Duesenberg: I’m not so good with the advice...can I interest you in a sarcastic comment? Chandler Bing,

Mark Farmer: Soak it in. It’ll all be over before you know it. Shelby Foley: To my fellow bathroom users: ‘If you sprinkle when you tinkle, be a sweetie and wipe the seatie.’ Courtney Geller: Do the readings that your teachers assign. It is much easier than struggling to get your grade at the end of the semester. Delaney Glazer: Do your squats, eat your vegetables, wear red lipstick and don’t let boys be mean to you. Kendall Jenner Tanya Grover: Don’t feel stupid if you don’t like what everyone else loves. Be yourself. Don’t let anyone stop you from doing something you want to do. Learn to depend on yourself. Also, don’t miss the deadline for turning in exemption forms. Rachel Hanson: Take Community Service class...the burritos are worth the work. Natalie Harshman: Do everything you can. Don’t look back your senior year and have regrets for what you would’ve done. Madison Hogan: Enjoy every

moment of high school it goes by fast. Brent Huffines: Don’t take four AP classes senior year. Connor Knutson: Do your homework. It actually helps. Alex LaMar: Never leave your wallet in Bixby’s room unattended. Jessie Ludwig: Bread Co. in the morning is always worth being tardy for. Odessa Magafas: Strive to discover and pursue your passion! Andrew Marsh: Ladies, Chuck Bass is a fictional character. You will not find him in Lafayette. Hannah Marshall: If you miss a day of school, email your teachers. You do not want to get behind especially during senior year. Gabby McDaris: If you take 109 to get to school, instead take Kehrs Mill to Shepard. It is much quicker. Brittany Meldrum: Don’t wish high school away, cherish all the memories you make with your friends. Michael Mertle: Don’t take AP Euro and avoid Choate. Jenna Moreton: It’s high school,

you’re supposed to mess around these four years and have a good time. Don’t take it too seriously. Meghan Panu: Love people and have an open mind. It’s a big world and we’ve got a lot to learn. Rachel Peipert: Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Don’t be someone you aren’t just to ‘fit in’ or ‘be cool.’ Trey Perez: Find a select group of people that you really care about and cherish every memory you share with them. Sarah Perkins: Take advantage of the time you are given, speak your mind, and live your life for you. Luke Pidcock: Cherish every second of high school, time flies. Courtney Poppell: Relax. You’ll become an adult and you’ll figure out a career. Surround yourself with good people and laugh through it. Ryan Rombach: Don’t use the word swag. Jeff Sirrine: Pee in the toilet, not on the floor. Allison Token: Even when you feel like you are drowning in a class there is always a way to get out of a bad grade! Don’t worry!

Scotts prepare to go from friend to foe

From field to court, twins Maggie and Jackie Scott have been inseparable. “With twins, I feel they either love each other or don’t at all, but we’re super close,” Maggie said. Looks, however, are not the only thing these two share. They have typically had the same friends, shared a room until 4th Grade even though it was unnecessary, have the same competitive nature and same general interest in music. But the thing that joins them even closer together is their love for sports. Maggie and Jackie have played soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball together and with the exclusion of one year of soccer, they have always been on the same team. They are probably most well known around LHS for their volleyball talent. “Volleyball is just something that we love so much, and to have that common interest, something a lot of people don’t have with other siblings, brings us closer,” Jackie said. This, they say, is the reason why next year will not be like the rest. Not only are the twins venturing off into college with hopes of obtaining their degrees, Maggie and Jackie are venturing off in different directions, on different sides of the country, playing for different Division 1 volleyball programs and for the first time, playing on different teams. Maggie said, “Last summer I spent a week in Oregon, and [Jackie] wasn’t there, but that was still really hard, just that one week. Whenever people find out we’re going to separate places they’re like, ‘how are you going to do that?’ And that’s going to be the hardest part of college, being on my own.” With scholarships for volleyball flying at them both from all directions, they did have the option of continuing the tradition of the dynamic duo on one team, but ultimately they decided to go to the colleges that would best suit them as individuals, not twins. “We looked at it and toured some options, but the ones we both would have gone to would have been settling,” Jackie said. Maggie will be attending the University of Oregon next year and Jackie will be attending the University of Western Kentucky. “I think I made the right choice and I’m excited,” Maggie said. The Scotts are not just going to be average college students, they are entering as student-athletes, which is much more demanding of not only time but energy as well. “You have to be more on top of things. It is a big time commitment, but you get certain things like priority rooming,” Maggie said. As for the games, it is really no debate as to who their parents will be watching in action. Western Kentucky is a four to five hour drive. Oregon is a 30+ hour drive or plane ride. With distance separating them, the Scott’s parents are happy at least one of the girls is staying close to home. “I think both of us will have our fair share of homesickness, but [our parents] will miss Maggie more because they’ll see me basically every other weekend,” Jackie said. Maggie joked that her parents are excited to go to fun destination games like Miami and Vegas and golfing locations like Arizona and California but they will definitely be suffering from empty-nest syndrome. Jackie reports to WKU in July and Maggie will be leaving for summer school June 23. “There will definitely be a transition period trying to figure out how to be on our own. But everyone will have that next year going away from their parents and siblings. Being away from home is generally an adjustment you have to make,” Jackie said. Maggie, majoring in either human physiology or sports marketing, aspires to graduate in December of her senior year to hopefully play volleyball overseas. Whereas Jackie, double majoring in nutrition and exercise science, wants to travel or work as a nutrition specialist for a D1 volleyball program. Even though volleyball will separate them now, their beloved sport will always keep them together as their bond as twins continues to grow everyday. -by McKinzie Duesenberg

sr. edition19 image Twinning: McFarlands tackle college side-by-side

May 16, 2014

Twice the trouble. That’s how seniors Courtney and James McFarland described their younger, pre-high school selves. “Middle school was really, really rough. We fought all the time, more physically than verbally,” Courtney said. The fraternal twins shared a room, a friend group and most everything else growing up, which wasn’t always easy. James even went so far as to say, if they were the same sex, “We’d probably have been punching instead of scratching.” However, the bickering and squabbling eventually came to a halt, and the McFarlands are excited to both be attending the University of Missouri next fall. James has assured his place in Mizzou’s Class of 2018, and Courtney needs to pass a collegiate algebra class this summer to guarantee her admission. The twins will join their older sister Lauren (Class of 2012), at the university. “It’s a family reunion!” James said. Courtney and James said that during the college process, Mizzou became the best choice for both of them very early on. “I’m not entirely sure what I want to do, and if I want to change my major or something, there is so much going on there and so many opportunities,” James said. Courtney is similarly excited. “I just wanted to go there, but it helps that Lauren’s going and that James will be there. I’m just excited for football games… it’s close to home,” she said. Courtney plans to major in hospitality management and marketing and becoming an event planner after graduating. James is undecided, but is interested in forestry and natural resources.

“It’s just a great school, and you get instate tuition. Why would you not go?” James added. Courtney and James didn’t really consider the other twin when deciding where to go next year. “I almost want to say that I don’t care. If he was going to Missouri State or somewhere else, I would be happy. If he succeeds I don’t care where he goes if he’s happy,” Courtney said. James feels the same way. “If she’s able to get in, it’ll be awesome, and I’m pretty sure she will. But whatever she does, as long as she succeeds, it will be awesome,” he said. The twins think it is “definitely positive” they can attend college with their siblings. “Say I’m having a terrible time making friends. I’m not really worried about it, but I’ll have this guy with me,” Courtney said, nudging her twin. James also suggested the pair will be eating Sunday dinners together, which Courtney quickly denied. The closeness Courtney and James show did start at an early age, despite the fighting common with most siblings. “When we were little kids we got along great. We weren’t inseparable but we hung out with the same people,” Courtney said. The twins shared a room, but for longer than actually planned. “Funny story actually,” Courtney began, “the first night I got into my separate room, we watched a scary movie or something, and I still slept in his bed for

like, a good year afterwards.” “She would come crawling into my bed. Since I’m a heavy sleeper, I’d wake up and there would just be a body next to me,” James elaborated. Courtney said she would also go into his room when she was scared during thunderstorms, instead of her parents’. Courtney and James consider themselves pretty similar personality-wise. “I wouldn’t say we’re both really funny, because honestly he’s funnier than I am. But we’re both really outgoing and we’re both very sarcastic,” she said. Despite that nobody else in their immediate family attended Mizzou, Courtney and James feel their parents are very pleased with their college selection. When asked who would be missed more by their parents, James immediately answered, “Me.” “Actually, I don’t know. They probably won’t miss either of us,” he continued. Courtney said Lauren is excited for her little sister to join her in Columbia next year. “[Lauren] said, ‘I want to show you everything!’ and she really wants me to rush,” Courtney said. In spite of their independence, Courtney and James are looking forward to staying together for at least four more years. -by Lucas Meyrer
