Iconoclast An Architectural Decomposition of Totalitarianism
Arena Design - Team of 3
Concept State Owned Arena: New Parthenon for Totalitarian Power
Stadium and Arena, in highly centralised state like China, often built as showParthenon Temp le: Symbol of theocratic power
piece of politicians' achievements, is bemcoming the new type of Parthenon not for theocratic power, but for totalitarian power. These so called "Civilian Architecture", built by tax payers' money, but rarely see any civic activities. They are more like monuments to commemorate the totalitarian power, rather than buildings aim for citizen use . Their massive scale resembles the greatness of authoritarianism, in contrast to the tininess of the individual rights. Like recent built Brazil State owned arena for the 2014 soccer World Cup: Estadio Nacional de Brasilia, this expensive arena after the World Cup will soon become useless, since the city Brasilia has no professional soccer team, not

Strategy
Building like the Taihe Palace of the forbidden city uses axis to strengthen itself, in order to bring out its supermercy and power. Axis to Focus: Taihe Palace of the Forbidden City
Focus Point Break Down:
Using repeated Units and Spreading Shape to decompose the great volume of the building, focus point break down into each unit, rather the the building as a whole.

Axis to Diminish: M oongate of Chinese Garden
Arc enbedded into the building, hence introduce a new axis. The axis acts to diminish the presence of the building, by focusing at the landscape of b oth its ends. The building like the wall in traditional Chinese garden, will fade into the background.
Plan Evolution
Laying in the Background
Building as Background, Rather than Focus Along with the repeated units, the spreading shape gives peopele a sense that when viewing the site and the urbanscape, rather then the focus , the building act as a background. Elevation Straegy

Site Plan Landscape & Activity Arrangement In order to change the current situation that the so called " civil architecture" ac-
tually lack of public use, activities like sports and different kind of landscape are embedded into not only the site but also the building itself. With the hope that even in days there is no game, the building and the site could be used, becoming a part of the urban life.

Region Overview Central Park and the Yangtze River at both ends of the site, suggest a landscape axis through the site and building. The axis could be not only a measure to make the stadium blend more in the natural landscape, but also a method to repair the broken relationship between modem city and nature.
Crowd Influx
Public Space Embedded Rather being a monument like structure which are being use only at special occasion, the stadium aim to be more communal, more related to citizens' every day life. Hence, function like gym, amateur sports, leisure, and also retail are implanted into the building, aiming at more frequent use of not only the building, but also the site itself.
Flourish Civil Activites Not limited being used only by spectators to watch the game at game day, the stadium are flourish with other kinds of civil activities, turning the site into a vibrant sports park, instead of a lifeless square. This time the stadium truly becomes a landmark, not because of the symbolic figure of power , but because its tight relate to the urban life of the citizen.
Structural Detail
Strcuture Elevation Plan The basic structure unit is Portal Rigid Frame, within the basic unit itself it's joined with rigid joint, which ensure the basic unit's stability. Several units laying appositionly forms the entire struture, between each unit, it's joined by a hinged joint, since it do not pass the bending moment,so it just uphold the just side thrust of the struture.
Structure & Space
Semi-indoor Public Space The open structure, has provided a good ventilation condition for the semi-indoor public space. Natural ventilation can cut down the air conditioning of the stadium, which is more sustainable way to operate. In the mean time,it also makes the stadium a more environmental friendly one.
Transluce nt Me mbrane The translucent membrane provides a chance for indoors natural lighting . Because of it, most part of the stadium could cut down on electrical lighting in day time. Also, membrane that allows lights transmission give us a sense of connecting relationship, between indoors and outdoors, building and nature.

Plot Ideology Opposition between Youths from Mainland China and Taiwan Causing by the controversial "Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement" (;fjjij(fiPjfflfJF!dยงJ!l~ '[iZ/;i), the ideology oppsition
of Mainland China and Taiwan was facilitated, especially in youths.
Moment After the incident of Bo, and long term economy recession ofTaiWan, both ChongQing and Taiwan need a chance to get
back on their feet.
Concept :Secret Rebellion Within Totalitarian Superstructure In most of forms of totalitarianism, differemt voices are repelled from the outside and op-
pressed within inside of the well organized mechanism. A disguise, to hack into and trick the system, is necessary, for the plan of reform or rebellion, to success. Superstructure has long been a symbol of totalitarianism, resembles different froms of capital or power that runs our society. It takes over most of the land for a single use, after censorship, let out a univocal voice.
Flaw Built Inside the System Rther than hacked from outside like traditional virus system, a rebellion mechanism is built in of this cell's DNA. It's an intentional flaw, aim to transmute the whole system.

The site was a Arsenal ruins in Chongqing, we use orderly and regular road planning to control the site.
Two slanted roads insert into the regular, square like road planning, symbolizing the scar that wars bring to the city and nation, which creates nowadays seperation of the people at Mainland and Taiwan, both physiscaly and mentaly.
Using the fluctuation of the river, water spread into the scar to heal the injured people and nation, and and bridges across th e scar, metaphorize stiches that suture the site and the nation , providing ways of communication strait.

Language & Architecture as the two of the oldest artifacts, their structure and idiosyncrasy has some kind of correspondence. Chinese language has relatively loose grammar compare to western language like English. In the same time, Chinese garden are arranged more freely and random than those of western which following a strict rule.
Grammar and El em ents Though following a set of strict grammars, variants in elements still makes English a graceful l anguage. It also has the advantage to convey information with hi gh accuracy, which Chinese do not.
