Inspiration derived from sailboats, 18th century ships and light houses, this Maritime Museum comes to life. The first floor, which is oriented on the alexandria grid, is supporting the upper floors which are rotated -10 and -20 degrees,

to face true north. Located on the waterfront of Old Town Alexandria, this site is in a consistent flood zone. to accommodate this, the first floor acts as a sacrafical first floor, made of heavier stone and concrete. The top two floors which
are
dedicated
to
gallery
space and offices, are made up of

recovered weathered wood. When this site does flood, the top two floors will feel like they are floating on top of the water, creating a boat like experience

with the introduction of the
saw tooth roofs and a sacrificial first floor which are represented in the diagrams above, the building becomes part of its environment but adapting to the circum stances at hand. The roof helps with natural ventilation while the first floor becomes a place where the water meets the building in a welcoming manner

Since the beginning of the design process, I knew the building mass needed to be divided up in some way. Through various iterations that took into account the site and context, the mass was split up into thirds, with the front mass consisting of 2/3rds and the back mass the rest, creating an interesting yet simple way to break up the multiple spaces in the Library. A butterfly roof, which has the look of a book opening, directs you to the entrance as well as providing sustainable features to the building.
