ABOUT ME I have currently graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with a masters degree in Architecture. I aspire to do what I am passionate about and use my creative talents working towards a career in the design field. ABOUT ME I am a 24 year old architectural assistant with a masters degree in architecture. PROFESSIONAL WORK PRACTISE PROFILE: Small office in Liverpool with 1 - 10 people, working on reuse, mixed use and residential projects. PROJECT INFORMATION: Yuet Ben Restaurant YEAR: Completed 2018 LOCATION: Liverpool

BRIEF During my time at ArchiTeh I worked on a variety of commercial, residential and change of use projects. The modernisation of Yuet Ben restaurant was a main project I worked on, we were appointed as architects to create a more inviting interior moving away from the traditional style of a Chinese restaurant towards a more contemporary style. The brief included a complete interior redesign, including a new bar design and back fittings, with a new contemporary shop-front. I produced existing and proposed drawings and attended design meetings with clients. I contributed towards the interior design decisions producing drawings and 3D models for the clients including detailed stages. I produced detailed drawings for the bar design and drawings for bespoke fittings which I designed myself.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

I worked within the team to deliver this change of use project from a empty shell into a Restaurant and Cafe. Ori and Cactus are a oriental fusion restaurant and bubble tea cafe, situated within belle Vale shopping centre in Liverpool.

PROJECT INFORMATION: Ori Restaurant & Cactus Cafe

I worked on the project from RIBA work stages 0-4, the design included splitting the empty unit into a separate restaurant and cafe with a new mezzanine floor seating overlooking the restaurant. I produced proposed drawings, Helped liaise with engineers and produce detailed drawings for building regulations.

Unit-3 Design Studio PROFESSIONAL WORK

SUMMARY During my month long Internship I worked within the team mainly on two new build residential projects. Manchester road was a new build residential project located in Northwich. I worked on the Design and access statement at the being of the project, conducting site analysis, massing studies generating a 3D site model on sketchup and initial Masterplanning sketches for the scheme. Sandy Lane Apartments was another project I worked on, the design features a bold central dormer extension accommodating 3 large apartments. I handmade a model for this design for a client meeting, helping the client visualise the new design.

HEALING OF THE MIND THESIS PROJECT


STATEMENT OF INTENT To create a facility that is an alternative mental healing programme for individuals seeking a natural way to combat mental illness. In response to the on going increase in mental illness cases in modern society, the scheme will explore the benefits of horticulture and the effects on wellbeing.

QUESTION How can nature and agriculture be used within a building to create a healing environment?

IDEA Creating a closed self sustained programme which connects building occupants to their surroundings and nature.

BRIEF The project is a alternative mental health rehabilitation program aimed at vulnerable individuals seeking to gain a positive state of well-being and mental clarity. The project consists of a working agricultural land with a series of therapy gardens which flow into the building, with a clear focus on food production within the internal spaces. The main aim of the project was to utilise the agricultural land of the Masterplan into a rehabilitation and horticultural research facility that is self contained and private from the public. The facility aims to be completely self-sustained by the working farming fields with the patients of the facility being the working gears of the land and food production as part of their healing process. The healing process which the project offers is a non clinical closed process which consists of growing food and cultivating crops, cooking and preparing food, eating and socially interacting with others. The program aims to slowly introduce vulnerable people back into society by improving their mental well-being and promoting positive social interaction. The design connects internal spaces with the exterior growing spaces using views and semi partially open spaces to dissolve the building into the landscape. A clear focus on natural materiality and transparency is explored to draw nature into the internal space. The building is intended to be a gateway to the working farm connecting the landscape to the public waterfront of the masterplan. The architectural style is inspired by the traditional vernacular of farmhouse buildings in Ghent featuring traditional and simple construction methods. Exploring natural materials and natural environmental strategies to create a healthy environment.

CONCEPT

The initial concept of the scheme was based around the positive effect horticulture has on the human mind. The theory which this schemes explores is the positive impact cultivating crops and being submerged within nature has on a mental illness. The project implements a healing process based of this theory. The healing process begins with the person being put into the surroundings of nature and exposing the individual to the benefits nature has on mental health. Learning about horticulture and working within the environment of natural food production enables a individual to simplify their mental problems taking away the complicated stresses of modern society. The healing process then encourages the individuals to interact with other people and gain confidence and social skills which then lead to finishing the program and being reintroduced back into society.

Ventilation Natural ventilation will be used in the majority of the building, the ground floor will be cross ventilated with the first and second floor being mainly single aspect ventilated. The Greenhouse will use curtain ventilation, There is a series of large openings and vents along the south wall of the greenhouse which will draw cool air into the space. Large vent openings on the ridge of the pitch will create a vacuum and draw hot air out of the building as the heat rises.

Heating And Energy The building will largely be heated naturally within summer months, two layers of foam insulation is used within the exterior walls to retain thermal heat. Plant rooms have been placed in the centre of the ground floor to supply heat and water to the above accommodation. Photovoltaic panels will be used on the south greenhouse roof to transfer heat to a water container with added heat from a heat pump, a boiler will then be used to heat the water up further to the desired hot water temperature for the accommodation and locker rooms.

BRIEF The live project was working with connection to Sefton Council regarding their Library in Bootle on Stanley road, Merseyside northwest. The library being part of Sefton Councils library services is one of six libraries across Merseyside and is one of three standalone libraries in Sefton council’s system. The Library was built in 1979 and is positioned just off the main high street in Bootle not far from the strand shopping centre which is considered the main shopping district in the area. As there are ongoing finical cuts in the public sector, Sefton Council runs an ‘invest to save’ programme which looks to make savings to budgets by rationalising facilities and services. As Bootle library is already acting as a community hub in Bootle to cut public spending the council would like to combine the family wellbeing service for the area with the library by relocating two centres, Marie Clarke and Cambridge centre to the site. The group was tasked at looking at a feasibility study for a new building design for the library which would be an addition to the existing library. With a budget of £1 million the new design will relocate the two well being centres to the Bootle library site creating a community hub and seeking to work as one body within the site. The new design will give opportunities for innovative ways of service delivery, reduce operational costs and produce a capital receipt from the sale/redevelopment of land. Family Well-being Centres provide joined up support for children and young people aged 0-19 years to make family life that little bit easier. Parents and carers receive extra help, advice and guidance to help them build confidence and resilience to deal with things that family life throws at them. The project will involve visiting the existing facilities to be replaced, developing a full programme, scheme, cost advice and planning permission considerations, to provide a comprehensive feasibility study for the client.

BRIEF The masterplan aims to re-imagine and reconnect Ghent with its industrial heritage, whilst providing a new, sustainable form of industry within the region. The historic port of Ghent has in recent years moved north away from the City Centre. This has subsequently made the smaller docklands, such as those at Handlesdok largely redundant, leading into the innercity canals. The modern use of Ghent’s port is largely focused around the distribution of coal, cars, fertilisers and petroleum products to larger European cities with no connection or benefit to the city of Ghent. Our masterplan will reinvent the industrial use of Ghent’s historical port as a sustainable system for the city. We propose the masterplan is to be the central hub for the Flemish Institute for Technological Research. The research organisation provides scientific and technological innovations that facilitate the transition to a more sustainable society, with a number of offices located throughout Flanders. The objectives of the Flemish Institute for Technological Research collaborate with those of Ghent City Council, particularly those relating to food strategies, and as such, the masterplan will have a more indepth focus on sustainable food production. This is a proposal for a forward-thinking and radical, urban masterplan; it will utilise the existing heritage of the area to create an eco-friendly expansion of Ghent’s city centre, including: public amenities, affordable social housing, dockside apartments and Research facilities - all underpinned by the response to a genuine issue within the region. The ‘root’ of reinvention will be achieved through re-purposing of Ghent’s disused docklands so that it can again benefit the city in which it previously used to serve.

Waterfront View Interactions with the canal are an important aspect of the proposed scheme. The proposal intends to create this interaction through a developed waterfront design. Civic Square The scheme forms one central square in the heart of the Site. This area is to be surrounded by larger civic and public Buildings. It has been devised to respond to the needs of Pedestrians whilst still accommodating public transport options. One of the key moves of this central square was the creation of a large space which is to utilise both soft and hard landscaping. This will be further developed with improvements to the street scene through new seating, improved lighting and cobbled paving. 46

BRIEF The brief for the project was revising social housing in Liverpool. The typical terrace house offers little social engagement with neighbours and nature. My intent was to redesign the terrace house typology within the same dimensions to create a more naturally lit environment. The chosen site was a empty plot of land between park road and Devon street, Liverpool, which historically had a back to back terrace typology. Within the site analysis I discovered that the demographics of princess park showed that 18% of the population were children. Although over half the houses in the area held single people. This suggested that there is a large portion of the houses which hold large families. My initial design idea was to create a adaptable house, which could serve different functions as a family grew and aged over time. The concept was the lower ground floor would contain the bed rooms for the children while the ground floor would serve as the communal living space and then the 1st floor being the master-bed room. As the child grew up the lower ground can have external access operating as private dwelling with the living space still in the middle as the core of house. To maximise natural light and comfortability split level floors are used with increased ceiling heights in the living space and lower ceiling heights in the kitchen area and bedroom. This gives the terrace typology a more comfortable and open feel.

Park road side address the need for accommodation for young professionals, as this side of the site is close to the main road the ground floor level isn’t sustainable for ground-floor apartments. A work to live typology was applied to compact this as the apartment block would be aimed at young professionals such as barbers or artists who could set up there shop or office space straight just off the main road, working as a two bed duplex. 50

RAINWATER HARVESTING

The vision for the project was to create a social housing scheme which would give a new aspect of community park road. The core of the master-plan is the green spine which generates social activities, while having a barrier of privacy to the generous garden space of the social housing. The environment intent was achieved with the following main principles.

Total Roof Area = 1,137m² Annual rainfall 900mm average Run-off coefficient 0.75 Filter Coefficient 0.90 Rain water harvested = 1137 x 900 x0.75 x 0.90 = 690, 725 litres Storage tank = rain water harvested x 0.05 690,725 x 0.05 = 34,536 Based on these calculations a storage tank of 35000 litres would be needed

Maximise natural daylight into spaces by building orientation ,and window height. High ceilings and allow for window heights of 2.8 metres. Passive ventilation for all residents through cross ventilation dual aspect rooms. Grey water re-usage and water saving sanitary fixtures. BRIEF Our scheme for the growth of a new residential development promoting sustainable transport highlighted the under-use of the historical train station. Although we used the listed train station as a restraint to our design, the scheme highlighted the importance of the station and the location. For my individual design I focused on the square which defines the station and the access to the station from outside of the new development. I aimed to create better access from station road and for the existing residents of the new housing development on the other side of the train track. By defining the square I aimed to create a soft landscaping area for leisure and the development of potential cafĂŠs and restaurants to occupy the ground floor of the surrounding buildings. This was the intention of creating a attractive and relaxing enclosure for residents or travellers waiting to catch the next train.

BRIEF Scenario The Masterplan was a group project in which we were tasked with a site in Ellesmere port which had been neglected and turned into a waste ground. As a team we set the challenge to change the face of Ellesmere Port, by making a connection from Cheshire Oaks towards the docks. Researching the demographics of the site it was apparent that Ellesmere port lacked green space for public engagement while the biggest employer of the town was retail outlet Cheshire Oaks. At the present moment, the area is separated by the M53, which we plan to use to our advantage. As a team we designed a green route from Cheshire oaks and incorporated it into a new housing development. We achieved this by using tunnels and bridges and also redeveloping the current canal, we aim to bring people down to and from Cheshire Oaks along a green route following the water. At the main ‘Hub’ of the site, we plan to make this into a place which people will be drawn too, and a new centre for the town with everything residents could want.

SITE ANALYSIS Ellesmere port as well as being a service sector economy has also retained large industrial industries. These industries include manufacturing ,oil refinery and chemical works. A large portion of employment comes from the retail sector with “Cheshire Oaks Design Outlet� being the largest outlet centre in the united kingdom. The manufacturing industry is another large local employer with Vauxhall Motors plant employing over 2000 employees. The standlow oil refinery employees around 900 employees and is the second largest refinery in the UK. The jobs at the oil refinery are mainly higher skilled jobs and don’t contribute to the local employment compared to the retail sector.

The main elements of the site which were to be key elements in our design was the historical train station which is currently a listed building. Although a key element of the site the station now sits on the wrong side of the track due to economic development over the years the Town centre is south of the train station making the station not as easily accessible to the residents.

The Procurement of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King It is odd to think that Liverpool waited until the 20th century until it had a worthy cathedral and now in the 21st century after numerous failed attempts it has two cathedrals of very different character. How is it that the Liverpool archdiocese has a ‘time changing’ modern cathedral today but first commissioned the building of the cathedral in the 19th century. Is it coincidence that both Liverpool’s cathedrals are architecturally strikingly different, although was built and completed within the same era. Why is it that the finished design of the metropolitan cathedral is made up of two completely different architectural styles, was Sir Edwin Lutyens ‘lost dream’ abandoned because it was a financial calamity or was there other factors. This dissertation aims to find the answers to these questions and determine the influencing factors in the procurement of the Metropolitan cathedral of Christ the king. Throughout the specialist study the cathedrals of Liverpool are closely examined and focused upon. The Anglican Cathedral which was commissioned in 1903 and designed by the architect Giles Gilbert Scott. And the metropolitan cathedral which was commissioned in 1933 and designed by the architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Frederick Gibberd. Both cathedrals are located within the same area of Liverpool and are connected by Hope Street, sitting at opposite ends of the historically important route of the city. As the cathedrals are closely connected by location it is interesting to study the imposing influences for the location of both cathedrals and the impact they have on one another and the skyline of the city. As both cathedrals were originally commissioned around a similar time of each other the completed design and style of architecture of both cathedrals is very conflicting, making it interesting to compare. The study looks closely at the history of the cathedrals as one similarity the cathedrals share is they both had multiply design proposals that were not built. within this specialist study these alternative designs are examined and the influencing factors which impacted the development of the cathedrals and the final built design. A case study on each cathedral is carried out examining the building process and highlighting the qualities and characteristics of the final designs. The study investigates the construction techniques and materials used within the building process and how these methods contrast for both cathedrals. Both Designs are critically analysed and compared to other cathedrals of the same style with a similar status. The Anglican Cathedral is designed within the Gothic revival architecture style and can be compared to other Gothic Revival cathedrals of the 19th and 20th century. The Metropolitan cathedral was originally designed within a neoclassical style by Lutyens and but was later adapted into a modern concrete design my Gibberd.

BRIEF The school was intended to be a learning centre for individuals who struggle to learn new skills in environments which are not suited for their needs. The school was designed for people who struggle with autism and find it difficult feeling comfortable and being able to focus in their environments. My initial ambition was to create spaces which are flexible and are catered to the individual needs of every pupil, giving the students a sense of belonging within a space. After researching the effects of Autism my concept would consist of two opposite spaces this being for the sensory avoiders and the sensory seekers. Spaces are grouped into these two different zones, each zone having opposing sensory environments. I then went into more detail into each zone having areas called “Safe zones� were pupils could feel safe when the environment was too much for them or when they needed to Self-stimulate to feel comfortable again. In helping the students transfer their new skills to outside of the school premises a public flow was designed through the centre of the site. This path was separate to the school facilities through the use of voided spaces and split level floors. This design decision was one of the main pillars of the seeker and avoider learning process enabling students to slowly integrate their new skills into the outside environment.
