- From 1577 till 1796 here was built the Bastion of Cisnadie’s Gate, which had a defensive character and was also the main access in the fortress. The gate is a symbol of entering in another space, accessing an interior and leaving the exterior out. - Because of town planning and military reasons in 1807, the Austro-Hungarian administration asks for building here a barrack, which was known as The Barrack 90. The Barrack 90 preserves the defensive character of the area and it is defined by a massive volume with an inner courtyard (specific for the Baroque buildings) and a series of corridors that wrap around the inner courtyard. The new building pays tribute to the old one by its proportions and because it is constructed over the wall of the Bastion. - In 1987 the barrack was demolished and the space, the entrance to the old town, it has a vague character. Here was settled a tent in 2007 when Sibiu was European Cultural Capital and now it is a parking place.
compact with interior courtyards aligned low heights (max Groundlevel+2) size S ENTRANCE TO THE OLD CITY
The site seems to have different layers of history, buildings that had have an importance in the city’s development and for that reason the new building should pay tribute to this evolution. The defensive character that was preserve during time should be reinterpreted in the proposal to come and should also be respectful to the remains of the bastion’s wall. Being the main access to the old city and a place where paths intertwine, the pedestrian circulation constitutes a main focus.
I.a. RESEARCH:
The city of Sibiu is famous for its cultural and historical legacy. The first settlements seem to appear in 1200 near the river Cibin. Because of the Tatars’ Invasion in 1241, the inhabitants started building a defensive system around a religious center. The defensive system developed over the years into a complex one with bastions, towers, surrounding artificial lakes, defensive walls with walled road (inner ward) and also an outer ward. Today the city of Sibiu has preserved time inside its walls (The Old City), outside them it seems that the new is limitless. Though the new part is modern, and respects the modern principles of exploding the box (the boundaries) and occupying the space freely, it still pays tribute to the old part of the city by concentrically development. The new city has no end but has a start; a center still represented by the icons of the medieval city- the 2 main squares, the Evangelic Church, the defensive system and the main access in the city on the N. Balcescu pedestrian Street. The site chosen is full of contradictions; it is at the boundary between the old town and the new town; intermediary between the inside and the outside of the fortified city, a place where pedestrian paths gather or dissipate.
old city:
- preserves part of the bastion wall and uses it as semi-basement; - function similar to the bastion- defensive character; - massive volume; -patio; hallway that wraps around the patio.
- vague space; - preserves part of the bastion wall.

URBAN ATTRACTOR
(key words: intermediate space, cultural pole, in-between, hybrid, mediator)
The proposal defines 3 buidings: The Urban Attractor (Center for Drama and Film- experimental theater+ cinematheque+workshops+exhibition), The Classical Theater as an extention of the Radu Stanca Theater (with the 3 requested audience rooms by the town hall), and an Experimental Center for Visual Arts, Sound and Media (workshops + exhibition, highly related to the other 2 buildings. Respectful to the green space and to the public functions, the squares around should be redesigned and the green area should continue, to create an alveolar space each time in front these buildings. For the next stages only one building is detailed. The site chosen is where remains of the Cisnadie‘s Gate Bastion and of the Barrack 90 still exist. The building designed here is The Urban Attractor (Center for Drama and Film)- gate to the old town and a space that should have the power to attract people in the old town and in the atmosphere and scenography of the old city of Sibiu.

The recent urban planning has left the area located at the main entrance into the Old City as an indefinite space. Theis space is characterized by a confusion in planning, in defining it functionally. It has often a temporary use, such as: it is a place for flower market, a temporary tent for 2007 when Sibiu was European Cultural Capital, a parking space, a place for selling bus tickets and a place for street art. Given the fact that it is located at the end of the most populated street in Sibiu that unites this space with the Big Square (a very performative space) and that here the city life, culture and education intersect themselves as representative to Sibiu, the functions that need to be planned here should respond to this happening. Sibiu is a very representative city in the field of performance, but still, it does not have enough spaces for this kind of art. The proposal suggests offering this space a cultural and educational function that defines it as a new pole in the city planning.

I.d. Concept:
After analysing how people use this space and the history of it, it seems that the existance of the city is related to this site. Therefore, in order to respect that history, the concept should pay tribute to the wall and its defensive character over the years. The fortress wall and the bastion wall always close to the exterior, to the threatening outside and open to the city. If the fortress wall with the wall road was seen as a path for transporting ammunition and for guarding the city; the bastion was a place where the defenders of the city unite in protecting the fortress, first center pole of the attacked city. The theater developed is inspired by the medieval flavour, with unreachable walls and defensive character, paying also tribute to how theater was developed at that time in a more experimental manner. As we have seen in the fesability study, only 17% of the spaces are accessible to the public. Keeping that in mind, the theater developed here, takes out these spaces for the public to see, in a path of workshops with educational function, that wrap around the space that they protect- the theater itself (protecting the art that shows the society as it is). The ribbon is like a fortified wall, open to what it protects, and close to the exterior, lighted from above with Zenitlight. From this ribbon the spectator can look straight at the play, as in the Shakespeare Globe Theater. The theater becomes an Urban Attractor because it is at the edge of the old city and shows the city in a scaled size. It announces the entrance into the old part, as a gate and protects what the city of Sibiu is famous for, the ART of DRAMA, in particular- the experimental theater.

• marking the demolished wall; • creating 2 theaters- an exterior one protected by the floor of an interior one; • connect this theaters through a mobile platform; • gathering the paths that intersect here into a loup that goes up until the interior theater and then descends into the exhibition area; • offering the theater director the possibility of using the loup as a place for the spectators that look into the main theater hall or using the loup as a place for the play itself; • flexibility in using the path and the stage; • offering the audience the accesibility and possibility of exploring the world of theater; • offering the city a new square in front of the theater from which you can access other functions open to the public; • the wall is now defined by an introverted path that ascends and protects the art of drama (the art that defines the society- the urban scene).

II. Diploma- final approach, detail
II.a. Final approach. Considering the character of the site as an intermediate between the interior and the exterior, an IN-BETWEEN, the project develops an alternation of these spaces along the path:
Let‘s resume: a) A fortification which separates the interior from the exterior and realizes an intermediary space b) Plus a polarizing route ----------------------------------------------------It results: - the band image that wraps inside the cultural life of the city.
The intermediary spaces are: a) the exterior space- THE THEATER SQUARE: - protected, hidden but in the same time visible; - this is an interior through the fact that it is surrounded by the expositional spaces but in the same time an exterior through the fact that it is open: I AM IN THE THEATRE BUT IN THE SAME TIME I AM IN THE EXTERIOR.
The new design kept some old features and adapted more to the site, opening a space accessible to the pedestrian, at level 0.00, as a covered terrace that looks from the old city to the new one and to the classical theater (extension of the Radu Stanca Theater, planned in the masterplan in first stage of the process).
b) THE INTERIOR COURTYARD: - closed, delimited by the workshops, the exhibition space and the exterior theatre: AN INTERIOR SITUATED IN THE EXTERIOR.
THE BAND (ribbon): -It closes in the outside of the fortress and it opens inward; -between the band and the wing from the level of the bastion’s wall it iresults in a vague space (exterior, but covered) which realizes the visual interaction with the exterior of the fortress and the mediation between the two opposites: interior/ exterior THIS ALTERNANATION INTERIOR/EXTERIOR is found through the whole project, which comes as an answer to the cultural and functional needs of the area and which is materialized in a Center for Drama and Film
c) THE BACKSTAGE FROM LEVEL 0.00: - when the doors open to the terrace, becomes an intermediary through the connection which it sets with the exterior, and even more – with the exterior of the fortress. -this intermediate level is actually the one that links the exterior theater with the interior one and realizes the connection with the new city.

This stage consisted in detailing the most important structural and constructional parts. THE STRUCTURE for the path: - inspired by the fortified wall with towers, it consists of a tube made of trusses that are supported by a vertical structure braced with steel profiles. The vertical structure resembles the towers in the fortified wall, and here it actually realizes the connection with the upper floors or it hosts the Readers‘ Tower. To summarize, the entire path is only supported at the ends (like a bridge), where spaces intersect, resulting in an open and covered space underneath.

site conclusion:
THE STRUCTURE for the theater: - because of high loads of the audience and the wish to have two open spaces, two theaters one under the other, the roof of the exterior theater and at the same time the support of the floor of the interior theater was designed with a spatial reticular structure that carries down the loads through 4 pillars of the same kind, place at the exterior that define the outside theater. This reticular structure acts like a lattice work and gives the space a sort of fragility, offering at the same time the possibility of hanging the sets or lights. THE STRUCTURE for the theater‘s roof: - because of the spam and the need of a light structure and roof that does not increase the weight of the building, the roof was designed with cables that stretch from the path trusses till the stage tower made of concrete. Over these cables a folded glass roof was added. The glass has different levels of transparency and during shows a fabric curtain is covering the ceiling to avoid undesired sound reflectivity.

PUBLIC IMAGE OF CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) “CERN‘s mission is pure research – studying Nature‘s tiniest building blocks, the fundamental particles, to find out how our world and the Universe work.” “The skill and dedication of the personnel and the combination of creativity, skill, international exchanges, science and cutting-edge technology has enabled CERN to attract the most brilliant scientists. And this power of attraction is another of the measures of the Organization‘s accomplishments…” “Overall, the visit experience shall reinforce the idea that CERN is a centre of excellence, carrying out frontier research by developing cutting edge technologies.“ (© ATELIER BRÜCKNER GMBH)
reception desk inside the Control Center
After the Globe- Universe of Particles permanent exhibition in Geneva, the office atelier brückner was comissioned again by CERN to realize an exhibition inside the most important buildings around the 27km LHC (large hadron collider) tunnel. Because the buildings are spread along the site, the visitors are taken on a tour to (4 till this point) important buildings: CCC (CERN Control Center), CC (Computer Center), SM18 and SC (Synchro Cyclotron). The CCC is the place where the LHC is controlled. The design of the exhibition space was inspired after the circular tunnel and the loops that the particles do inside the LHC and is also similar to the circular desks used inside the CCC, as being part of this area. In the exhibition space the visitor is introduced in how the LHC works, by showing the bottle of hydrogen from where everything starts and projecting how the particles accelerate on a smart glass. This smart glass is located at the intersection between the exhibition area and the Control Center itself, after the show ends and the visitor is informed, the glass turns from opaque to clear and the visitor can look inside the control area, and see live how the staff work. view from foyer

STORYBOARD- the projections on the glass screen and introduction of the guide into World Wide LHC Computing Grid
COMPUTER CENTER CONTENT:
Real time data of the worldwide LHC Computing Grid – Google Application
The fundamental question is how to handle the growing amount of data. Alongside the process of answering a lot of solution were developed, which have or will have an impact on people’s life. The World Wide Web was invented at CERN for the use of scientists who needed to share information, the GRID therefore allows to share computing resources as processing power, storage capacity, senors, visualisation tools etc. This new resource can exist of tens of thousands computers and allows scientist to find answer to questions like: What happened in the first moments of the Universe? How will global warming change our Earth? What new drugs could fight cancer or malaria? What kind of fuel will we use in the future instead of gazoline? The space proposed for design from CERN has a view towards the computer storage here. Keeping in mind that this is like the ''temple'' of computers, information and cutting edge technology and after a look inside the Computer Center and Tape Storage, it seems like the space resembles Stanley Kubrick‘s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Therefore the exhibition space design here gives you a glimpse about the live amount of data processed in the world by direct connection to the LED wall and ceiling that light up or turn off according to the flux of information. The image resulted resembles that of Space Odyseey. Apart from the interactive envelope of the space, there are also showcases that show the development of the computer inside CERN and again a smart glass towards the Computer Center. The glass at the beggining is opaque and acts like a screen for projections (with integrated senssors) and at the end turns transparent, showing the visitor the place where world amount of data is processed.

SM 18
information, quantum mechanics, big bang, www) SM 18 CONTENT: The three key technologies of the LHC are constantly improved in the SM18. In particle physics without these developments no stepping further is possible. The RF Cavity accelerates the protons to aproximatly the speed of light in the Booster, the Cryogenics cool down the elements, so processes become possible, and the Dipole Magnets make the protons to float in circles. All of these objects are displayed here in the Exhibition Area in order to show the visitor parts of the LHC. This sector is placed inside the SM 18, so the visitor has no physical barrier, that is why it was inspired by the CERN tape that marks restricted areas.
1. Elevator Experience decending from 0.00 to -175m
2. The LHC Mock-Up Tunnel- to be design by CERN
The space consists of 3 areas: 1. Elevator Experience- where the visitors experience a projected decending at 175m bellow ground level (the level where the LHC is positioned); 2. The LHC Mock-Up Tunnel- a real size section of the LHC placed inside a space that resembles the real tunnel; 3. Exxhibition Area- that diplays important parts of the LHC with additional digital graphics that explain how the exhibit functions.

The Horch Museum in Zwickau, Germany comissioned a rehabilitation of the old Audi plant into an exhibition space and an extension that links the current museum with the future one. The rehabilitation of the old plant and conversion into an exhibition space, is conceived on using the full space as merely an open space, where the existing skylights pay a major role in the exhibits display. The 3425m2 space consists of a 550m2 children‘s exhibition, a 485m2 special exhibition, 140 m2 other spaces and the permanent exhibition with themes concerning the German Democratic Republic, Volkswagen and the car racing in the 30‘s. Because the building has no connection with the current museum, an auxiliary space, an extension that would link these spaces had to be designed. The design presented shows: - Contemporary Interpretation of industrial architecture; - Serial Architecture; - Sculptural, an independent body; - Contrast to existing buildings; - Strong emphasis on various visual relationships: ''experience“ of the architecture while passing through - frequent change of perspective; - View of extension building upon entering the connecting building. This linking space is a place for relaxation, a restaurant with terrace was design here, offering the visitors an open view on to the industrial architecture of the buildings.

What is the most important moment in a girls life? The wedding, starting a new life is seen as one of the most important events. The element that defines this event is the wedding dress. Wanting to contribute to this market, the client rented a total of 200m2 of space on 2 levels (ground floor and underground) on one of the high class destination streets in Bucharest- Calea Victoriei. The main challenge was to fit in this restricted space 3 dressing rooms(as spacious as possible), a reception, storage, an exhibition space at the storefront, other dresses on diplay, a place for discussions, a place for customers to wait and a tailor‘s room for dresses that need adjustments. Keeping this in mind, the ground floor houses the functions that show the customers the shop‘s status, such as the exhibition storefront, the display of dresses, the reception, place for discussions and waiting area. The underground level houses the dressing rooms, the tailor‘s room and the storage. The shop was design in such a way that the furniture is perceived as walls or as chandeliers. It is integrated in the shop‘s space, occuping as minimum place as possible. The materials chosen try to create a more comfortable atmosphere, a feeling of home.
When children get old and build there own family, they get to have there own houses, but as parents become elders and they need help in every day life, there should exist a solution to keep them together and still have some privacy. This house was built to respond to such needs. The shape was inspired by this duality. As one wing has 2 levels the other one gows 3 levels up and they reunite into a central element- the staircase. The 2 families have a place to get together in the ground floor where the dayly life functions exist, such as: living room, dining and kitchen. Because of the weather in Romania (high quantities of snow) and the client‘s wish to have a sloped roof, it was decided to play with this element. Therefore, the duality of the house can be seen by the contrast in the sloped roof. The roof becomes part of the house and covers not only dormitories but opens to the scenery into terraces or balconies. As the traditional Romanian terrace, cold ''prispa'' or ''pridvor'', where the roof sticks out covering the entrance, this house reinterprets traditional habbits, creating a new and fresh architecture.

mobility
The site is situated near Lake Morii, where the river Dambovita enters the city of Bucharest. To the north side the site is bordered by an important road (Soseaua Virtutii) that links the city with the West side of the country. The road separates the green areas around the lake and the river Dambovita. To the South side the site is bordered by the river Dambovita itself, and to the Est by small buildings. Also, the site is located near a student campus called Regie at 10 minutes walk. The aim of the project is to design a sport facility for students and national championships that acts like a link between the separated green zones. The building will act like a footbridge, a crossing over Soseaua Virtutii. The design of the project not only responded to the given theme, by creating a sport facility, but also took in account the city planning needs, by creating connectivity between areas separated by traffic. The sport arena will be a place to celebrate, to interact, a bridge that connects the green areas, that takes into account the passer, the bicycler and not the car.

The structure designed by concrete columns and beams is duplicated after 50m, when another wing starts. The roof is made out of a concrete slap and covered by all needed layers in order to waterproof and to create a green roof. The facade of the building is designed with glass on which a graphic print is layed on to in order to balance the amount of light coming into the house and to offer a degree of privacy. generations with a public space
Given the theme, the projrct had to develop a story and to imagine the families necessities. The house designed is for a family that reached 40 years, whose children left home for studies or start a new life and whose parents are living with them but separately. The family is living at the levels 1 and 2 of the building and the parents have a studio at underground level. The grandparents are artist and exhibit there works in the gallery right next to them but located slightly down, to offer a little bit of privacy. The ground level is left open, it is a place of confluence, of interaction, a small square where people can exchange opinions after visiting the gallery. The house is design according to the image of the street. As most of the windows which face the street were covered with bricks, offering an introverted image, the house is covered by a peel offering enough privacy and light.
(key words: pedestrian, connection, structure, breakthrough technology of its time, reinterpretation) - given site, - given theme, - part of a competition. Located in Prato Province the Leopoldo the 2nd bridge is the first suspension bridge built in Italy. The bridge was built in 1833 to reestablish the connection between Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano and le Cascine di Tavola, by Alessandro Manetti. In 1944 the German army bombs every bridge that crosses the river Arno. The Leopoldo the 2nd bridge loses it’ s integrity and was never used. Paying tribute to the ingenuity of the suspension bridge, the new bridge uses the same technology but without altering the remaining gates, symbols of massivity, structural ressistance and architecture of that time.

FASHION SHOW (key words: haute couture, spring-summer, lattice, cathedral, beauty, contrast, massive, delicate)
- no given site, - given theme- fashion show
- no other restrictions.
To design a fashion show, means to take a close look at the designer‘s collection. The designer chosen for this project is Elie Saab, known as one of the most famous designers that dress celebrieties that walk on the Red Carpet. Elie Saab‘s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2011 speaks of elegance, delicate, joy, beauty, feminin, a collection that wants to express its own fairytale. In order to create this mistery and illusion, the show is located in an old church that is no longer in use. The architecture of the ruin, medieval gothic, has common grounds with the lattice on Elie Saab‘s collection. The show is designed on creating a beautiful illusion. Therefore, most of the images seen by the spectator are not real, but using a Pepper‘s Ghost system, they create the feeling of being real. Because the collection is spring-summer, the fairytale seen here speaks about this change of seasons- from winter- the cold, ice season with monochrome colors to spring and summer- the joyful and polychrome seasons. STORYBOARD: 1. mapped projection on the cathedral walls showing it frosted- monochrome dresses worn by projected models- remembering winter; 2. the cathedral‘s ice starts to melt and out of the first drop a fairy appears - announcing spring rises and gently walking she turns into water on the podium. 3. polychrome dresses are shown in this stage and the models walk on water 4. using the same projection system, the water rises from the floor and transforms itself into Dandellion umbrellas- summer season. 5 the fluff descends announcing the end of the presentation and the entrance of the bride. 6. the real models parade and the designer.
