Foreword ☺ by

YU Yen-Liang President of Liang Gallery

Very often children are not preoccupied with things, they stride rapidly, and they are innocent and straightforward. However, what exactly makes them change? I believe it is always related to the limited views of adults. Children observe their parents when growing; meanwhile, parents think that they must be their kids’ heroes. But we all know that heroes are not perfect, even they have imperfections, for example, Anpanman loses his powers when his face gets splashed with water, and Ultraman has enough strength to fight only for three minutes. There is no difference if they are pretty or not, what matters is that they are honest, hard-working, and courageous. These are the real heroes. Little kids painted by Chiao-Ling always observe their parents and people in this society with their tiny little eyes and listen to their parents’ words and public opinions with their small ears. If you, as an object they are longing for, do not have a trustworthy face or do not speak words of truth, they get worse and the vivid colors disappear. Whenever I look at Chiao-Ling’s paintings, I see kindness and joy. Therefore, I hope that everyone, including me, can see this world as a genuine place just like the one depicted in Chiao-Ling’s paintings – innocent, pure, and full of beautiful smiles.

The Courage One Cannot Live Without – LO Chiao-Ling - Ideal Life ☆ by

CHANG Ching-Wen Assistant Professor at Department of Arts and Design, National Tsing Hua University

Ōe Kenzaburō has once mentioned a personal story in his Under the “Tree of Mine,” a book I have been reading again recently, about the questions he used to receive from teenagers. The most frequently asked one was: “when you were a child, what kind of person you wanted to be when you grew up?” When Ōe Kenzaburō was still a child, he did not imagine his future occupation but expect himself to become someone with great manner and personality. “At that time, a figure surfaced in mind as a clear image, and I was thinking when I grew up – no, starting from now – I wanted to be a man of courage like him,” says the great writer. 1 In this book written for teens, Ōe Kenzaburō shares his life experiences and thoughts with care and tenderness, and extends his ideas to cover philosophy of life, wars, habits, and learning. He repetitively returns to his childhood and adolescence to capture his younger self, the young man imagining the future, and the man in the present, creating dialogues among those “selves” and superimposing the identities throughout the passage of time at the initiation of every discussion, through which he not only challenges but also inspires his young readers (or the aged readers who used to be young) in the profoundest way. The book ends with the chapter “Please Wait for Another While,” in which the author in his late fifties believes that if one day he met his much younger self, he would have probably told him: “when you grow up, you have to hold fast to what you believe now!” “The person who you are now will thus go on living in your adult body when you grow up.” 2

I am not sure whether Lo Chiao-Ling had ever imagined meeting her future self when she was a kid, but I think the child, the much younger Lo, is still holding office like a director in her mind to decide what she is now. The paintings created by Lo during the past few years are closely related to her life. For her, kids and family are her ordinary life. Many of her paintings are portraits of children painted with a sense of lightness and sobriety. These children have different looks, but they share similar faces, facial features, and even dresses. They have identical expressions, or to be more concrete, dispositions, as if they belonged to a mega family. Seeing the portraits displayed in the exhibition space, or examining the digital images in thumbnails like me writing this article, we may easily discover a strong sense of consistency in these standardized images in terms of form and similarity in styles. When the paintings to be viewed are temporarily removed from their titles, they have lost their names for a while and their appearance becomes the only identification. As we repetitively scroll up and down, it evokes a familiar contemporary visual experience – a reminiscence of one’s “friend list” on social media. In fact, the display of the user’s interpersonal network has a more classical version, yearbook. No matter it is a friend list or a yearbook, both are imagebased techniques to signify social relations or emotional networks. As for the portrait series by Lo, what they demonstrate not just the interindividual relations but also how they become an entity to represent “the figures created by

15

Lo,” in other words, the connection between the creations and the creator, and it is the latter what attracts us more. Most of the portraits are fictional. From her early works to the recent ones, Lo has always based her paintings on merely imagination, only with a few exceptions where Lo’s friends serve as her models. She has once talked about the origin of the figures: “the portraits are created as I have the persons I once met or the persons I know in my mind, or in other cases, I am painting without limiting myself, so sometimes the people in my paintings unintentionally look like the people I know in real life, and I will name them accordingly or put some words in their mouths.”3 The people from her real life are given new looks and lives on her canvas. In the portraits featuring emotionless children with small but bright eyes, it is extremely difficult to identify their personalities. Their childhood innocence triggers our affection and compassion, but for viewers, they are generalized into a collective infantlike image. In front of these strange little humans, I come to realize that Lo has a mother’s ability to have children materialize from nowhere. These children with similar faces belong to the mega-family she reproduces. A mother has always been obsessed with children’s pictures, and she can clearly differentiate the degrees of their adorableness (which others may feel indifferent to) with great subtlety. Embedded with such emotional experiences, the pictures or images become something more like family members for the painter. Lo’s paintings are not limited to portraits but also subjects related to home or childlike fantasy. Her brush caresses the

thin but yet multi-layered paint, fast and softly, occasionally creating delicate traces like doodling which penetrates the paint and is thus vaguely reflected on the surface of the image. Through its lightness and purity, it echoes the innocent faces in other portrait paintings. As a mother, Lo accompanies her children with absolute understanding as well as the freedom and love untainted by any anxiety, while in her motherhood she also grows up again with them. I look at these children portraits again and again, quietly looking into their eyes one by one. Their faces almost occupy the whole images, and it is only through these faces that we get to know them. In the world we are living in, everyone is a unique existence, and Lo – in spite of the regulations confining the artist – gives them different appearances and personalities. It may be impossible for you to distinguish one from another at the first glance, but the difference is there for you to feel rather than to identify. If you want to know them better, you have to give up some collective or generalized depiction such as “children portrait” or “cuteness.” It is more than necessary for us to establish one-to-one relationship with them. These faces with identical familial characteristics reflect Lo’s meticulous observation on human nature, and the artistic expression also reveals what she believes to be the values of humanity. The children in the paintings are as simple as they appear to be, and we can only gaze into them attentively. In the quietness between us, we are aware of our own existence, and the characters in the painting always return our stare of assessment with an ambiguous gaze.

When it comes to all the assessment and judgement in the world, I think young kids are the only fearless and unaffected ones. When Lo and I talked about what “growing up” really meant, she said “to grow up requires a lot of conditions, and the first is to acquire courage.” Perhaps every child carries an unparalleled courage with them, and they keep their original self within out of the desire that they do not want to lose such a courage. Under the exhibition title Ideal Life, I think what Lo demonstrates is not her ideal life, but what she believes to be the most essential, where one begins with, which makes the ideal life possible.

Be Your Own Mario and Your Own Princess Please believe in yourself. Walk a little further and you will find a gold coin, super stars will also help you, and mushrooms will make you grow bigger. The things you want, others cannot give you, therefore you must go find them yourself. When you are playing video game, you have to finish one level to go the next one, life is also full of many levels: sometimes you can walk slowly and enjoy the scenery, and there are times when you have to be quick to cross the border. If you are lucky, you can get 1-UP mushroom. Mario is always there to rescue Princess Peach. I hope each of us can have the courage of Mario and the faith of Princess Peach to solve the crisis ourselves. If you remember and still believe in the fairytales, you can go back to your childhood, to that dazzling moment of time. When encountering difficulties, you might meet with the fairy godmother of Cinderella who will enchant you with sparkling and glittering magic. So great! It is like being a “freshman” again, like a little freshman wearing a new uniform, when everything is filled with newness, new air, and new expectations. Let’s not take in the disturbing fantasy. Let’s stay quiet and calm in our little world! Let’s look at that beautiful little bird through a telescope, dive into deep waters to discover mermaids and beautiful creatures. Afterwards, we all live together in this world! Try Alice’s magical drink! Shrink! Now everything is possible!? Or maybe nothing happened? Everything depends on your choices and decisions. If you find the jewel-like love, please remember to take a good care of it, because this world is unique and will not be exactly the same next time! You are the reason why the world exists; you can decide what kind of things you want to see, how you want to see them, and what are your ideals.

Ideal Life ♡ by

LO Chiao-Ling

Looking at the Ideal The understanding of ideal varies to different people. What I want to say is that there is the way of looking at things and the way of being looked at. The work titled Looking at You is one of a few pieces where the pictured figure is not facing the viewer. The background, the face side view, the curves of the face, and the textured hair, all provide me with introverted feeling and suggests a safe viewing distance for the audience. She cannot see my face, and I cannot see hers, there is the same amount of space for both of us to imagine things. Sometimes we set our eyes on the things, but we cannot see them clearly; therefore, we must maintain a certain distance for observation, looking, and imagination. Also, although sometimes people cannot see clearly, yet they can feel the beauty. This space for imagination is unrestrained, and you may even leave the space (the painting) and come back to it at any time. It only suggests some kind of way of looking: sometimes tender and neat, sometimes tranquil.

A Rainbow, a House, and a Bird Regarding the title “Ideal Life,” it refers to creating a space for looking in an already existing space. What we see in the space (the painting) is ideal or, in other words, is the ideal of mental space. Here, everything transforms into the eternity of moment and exists in the eternity of mental space. Here, all true feelings and emotions are preserved and pictured on canvas, thus becoming the scenery to be looked at. Through self-observation and self-acknowledgment, I gained courage. It is only a minor mental interaction. Lonely, silent, sunshiny, and rainy, these are the treasures that will remain forever in the heart. The light in a rainbow, the beauty of a family, and the discovery of a fictional small bird have become the ideal reality. There are various possibilities for what happened before and after, same as in the never-ending story which is meant to continue forever. It is like the world of little kids who know how to make the adults squat down. Microscopic, huge, imaginary, cute, sad, and scared is a new world constructed of fragments of knowledge and stories. It is like a storybook with stories about birds and home sometimes guiding you to discover a new world. “A little bird, do you know where my home is?”

By the way of creating these works, she represents the glorious and warm feelings from her memories and reflects on the connection between self and social environment. Lo Chiao-Ling has attended international exhibitions, including “MIDEM – The World's Music Market” in Cannes, France, in 2007 and “Asia Hotel Art Fair Hong Kong 2013” in Hong Kong.
