PREFACE The power of calming down is essential and even more precious in this noisy environment. A small pebble presents an idea, which sometimes is pure, sometimes is stable and strong, and sometimes is quiet and peaceful. Fu HauShiuan very successfully passes on his ideas, meticulously trying to portray a space or a plan on each small round stone, thus allowing you to grasp and experience the self-awareness.
The flowers spreading all around the canvas represent pure nature leaning closer towards our lives. A pebble occasionally looks like a tall lofty mountain, thus strong and stable, protecting our surrounding. The answers to all the questions can be found in the canvas, in which the story is in harmony with nature’s laws. It is a philosophy of life, which Fu Hau-Shiuan has brought to our lives and which has become a part of our “spiritual nature.” A ring is a way to remind yourself of the commitment to t h e p ro m i s e . N o m a t te r w h a t difficulties you might encounter, how busy, messy or trivial your life might become, it is still possible to persistently adhere to your own
ideas until the end. One space for one painting. Curiosity draws us closer to have a peek, and allows us to discover that every object resonates art, poetry, literature or sincere emotions and perfectly balances among each other. The accurate depiction of objects is like a natural thirst for knowledge allowing us to open the curtain and experience the most beautiful emotions on earth. It appears that his pebbles are filled with life. Because of the artist’s sincerity, every stone is trustworthy, and every delicate detail silently portrays the ease of mind which we all need. 撿拾物的祝福
傅浩軒從 2014 年逐步發展的「約定系列」,到了最近個
展「約 約」在構圖細節有了更多的變化。過去作為背景
的壁紙,在這兩年的發展開始具備著個人圖騰與象徵的
意義。同時也因為育兒環境改變,浩軒發展出新的素描 系列與《戶籍調查》等作品,呈現更往社會空間的向度

前進。由於形式的開展,過往以超現實目光描述的現實 關懷,從象徵層面更邁向了現實空間。某種程度來說,

「約定系列」中指環暗示的契約、禮物交換的意義,在這
一次展覽中,有著小我到大我的擴張。藝術家在指環上 放 大 的 象 徵 重 量, 讓 畫 筆 更 具 備 一 種 厚 描 書 寫(thick description)的可能。

畫中的撿拾與再發現,是傅浩軒從「空間系列」轉向「約 定 系 列 」 值 得 探 討、 問 題 化 的 主 題。 從 杜 象(Marcel
Duchamp,1887-1968) 將 撿 拾 物(found object)
或現成物納入了藝術世界,「一切經由人手製作之物皆 是藝術」的觀念在當代藝術中反覆出現。這裡的撿拾物
則是「約定系列」中相當關鍵的角色;浩軒在海邊撿拾 而來破碎的瓷磚或是石塊,成為了畫布上的對象。他在
「約定系列」中利用撿拾的石頭取代戒指上的鑽石,不同
質地的石頭的外貌被保留下來,依照想像力添加了各種 細節,有時是企鵝、鹿臉,有時呈現了社區的想像。關 於撿拾物的討論,人類學家阿爾弗雷德・格爾(Alfred
Gell,1945-1997)曾從比較文化的觀點提到撿拾物在
達達主義出現之後對物件-意義任意性的態度以及審美
行動主義者的使用方式,大相逕庭於東方所呈現的寂靜 美學。而環境美學學者阿倫・卡爾森(Allen Carlson, 1943-)也曾經透過撿拾物在藝術史產生的事件,將撿拾
與現成物在審美接受面上與地景藝術相比較。在錄像藝 術中,我們也可看到 Stefano Basilico 等錄像研究者提 過錄像作為撿拾物、現成物的討論。換句話說,撿拾物
在百年來有著相當複雜與多樣的討論,而浩軒隱藏在畫 布背後的撿拾、拾遺既連結了早期超現實主義的美學觀 點又呈現了一種較為積極的藝術轉化,在畫面上發展出 個人從石頭、建物磁磚的想像空間。

哲學家巴舍拉(Gaston Bachelard,1884-1962)將石
頭視為一種穩定靜止的狀態,石頭有著堅硬的性質,這 種硬化的過程也暗示著創作想像意志的出現。「約定系 列」從撿拾物到對這些石塊的想像,在畫布上表達了人 際之間強弱、冷暖的張力。在「約定系列」中有很大一
部分,浩軒總是視這些小石塊是集體住宅、舞台和場所 的替代物,它們既是藝術家對建築物件的溯源,也是心 理 學 者 溫 尼 考 特(Donald Woods Winnicott,18961971)稱之為「中間領域」。所謂的中間領域是指內在
與外部現實的某種過度狀態,通常是透過一些客體物件的
互動形成,在這裡就是畫中的那些石頭。在這個中間領 域中,這些撿拾物成為了過渡性客體帶著某種遊戲趣味,
並進而體現了某種潛能空間、對世界的調適等細節。在 這裡,這種「中間領域」所呈現出的現實測試 (realitytesting),在這一次的展覽更為顯著。這一次除了展出
持續發展的「約定系列」,更展出了在育兒同時創作的 一組素描。構圖中,撿拾物與其植物被當成了畫置於素 描畫面的居家空間裡頭。以往充滿幻想的撿拾石塊,更
顯出了自傳色彩。而新發展的「戶籍調查」系列更是藝 術家與台北市盆栽風景的拓撲。由內向的社會想像到行 走路線開始用畫筆逐一記錄的植栽記憶,浩軒「約 約」
個展更具備著自我經驗的呈現、記憶與檔案的色彩,也
讓素描系列中的撿拾物有著怪奇、古物的面目,開展了 特殊的東方美學的向度。

以素描系列為例,《父子》、《孕婦》、《相識相守》與《祖
「約 約」的展覽呈現了浩軒作品重要的轉變瞬間。以往以
讓人感受到人的氣息,而人物的氣息又透過了不同植物
外在的現實投射。而原本在 2014 年規矩的壁紙花樣,在

木呈現了人的關係,另一方面身體的重量對椅子的改變 又呈現了人的在場,只不過素描系列的筆觸卻更溫柔地 描述著和諧狀態的可及。畫面中的石塊則在畫面中顯示 了鼻煙壺那種小物般的質地,有著寄寓外物的東方美學。
在這裡撿拾物有了癖嗜的色彩,又同時連結了肖像畫傳 統。而在「戶籍調查」系列,例如《台北市大安中正區》
就是一張混合盆栽、植被的特殊地圖,或是一張浩軒散 步路線的特殊檔案,在這裡拾撿物又變成了像是記號、 代碼的象徵貨幣,被收納於山的意象裡頭。

自然環境、人之間關係的探討有了更個人面向也更具備 今年的嘗試中植物更像是奧秘的場所、更神秘地展示著
石頭所想像的社群關係,《心植手劊》、《窄門》和《傷
山》等草木圖騰更不見拘束空間的存在。這多少反映「約 約」展覽中傅浩軒在視覺上物體再認(recognition by
component theory)的多重,以及許多符號與現實的 交涉跟對話。從撿拾物的想像到社會空間的生產,浩軒 在這四年間拓展了台灣超現實與幻視空間的可能。他一 向關注的社群關係與人我距離,更值得從繪畫的細節中 去發現與挖掘,思考繪畫藝術如何呈現出其在視覺幻想 與傳統再現張力下的當代性。

Fu Hau-Shiuan has started developing the Promise Series since 2014. The compositions and details in his recent solo exhibition “Ring Ring” show more variations. In the past, the wallpapers used to be merely backgrounds, but in recent two years, they have started to be equipped with personal totems and symbolic meanings. In the meantime, due to the child-raising environment, Fu developed a new sketch series and works including Census that present a dimension closer to the social space. Because of the expansion in forms, his care for the reality that used to be depicted in a surreal light is now, through symbolic levels, closer to the real space. To a certain degree, in this exhibition, the contract hinted by the rings in the Promise Series and the meanings of gift exchange are expanded from a personal self to the society. The symbolic weight the artist enlarged on the ring enabled possibilities in his brushes to produce thick descriptions.

The picking up and rediscovery in Fu’s paintings as he transformed from the Space Series to the Promise Series are topics worth investigating. Since Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) introduced found objects and readymades in the world of art, the concept that “Everything handmade is art” has repeatedly appeared in contemporary art. In the Promise Series , found objects play a crucial role. The broken tiles or stones Fu picked up by the ocean became objects on his canvas. In the Promise Series , he adopted stones he picked up to replace diamonds on rings. The appearances of stones with different textures were maintained, and on them, the artist added various details from his imagination such as penguins, deer faces, and presented what a community is like in his mind. Regarding found objects, anthropologist Alfred Gell (1945-1997) stated from the perspective of comparative cultures that since Dadaism, the attitude toward the arbitrariness between object and meaning and the ways in which aesthetic activists employed found objects were drastically different from the silent aesthetics the East presented. Through incidents found objects caused in art history, the scholar of environmental aesthetics Allen Carlson (1943-) also compared found objects and readymades with landscape arts on the basis of aesthetic acceptance. In video art, researchers such as Stefano Basilico have also discussed video art as found objects and readymades. In short, in the last century, found objects have undergone complex and diverse discussions. In Fu’s artwork, the found objects hidden behind his canvas both connect to the early surrealism aesthetics and present a more active transformation in art, presenting in the picture his personal imaginary space from stones and building tilts.

Philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962) considered stones in a stable, static state. Stones are hard, and the hardening process implies the emergence of the will to create and to imagine. In the Promise Series , from found objects to the imagination toward these stones, the tension between the strong and the week and between indifference and compassion in human relationships are expressed on his canvas. In a large portion of the Promise Series , Fu always views the little stones as substitutes for collective housing, stages, and places. They are both the artist’s tracking of the sources of architectural objects and what the psychiatrist Donald Woods Winnicott (1896-1971) called the “intermediate area.” An intermediate area is a transitional state between the
inner and outer reality, often formed by interacting with objects, and here the objects are the stones in the paintings. In this intermediate area, the found objects become transitional guests with certain game-like fun and further present details such as certain potential space or adjustment to the world. The reality-testing presented in the intermediate area is even more significant in this exhibition. In addition to exhibiting the Promise Series that is still being developed, this exhibition includes a set of sketches created when the artist was raising his child. In the composition, found objects and plants became canvases placed in the sketch picture of the domestic space. The usual stone-picking that was full of fantasies became more autobiographical. The newly developed series Census are the records of the artist and the pot plant scenes in Taipei City. From introvertedly imagining a society, Fu started to take walks on different routes and use brushes to record memories of planting one by one. Fu’s “Ring Ring” solo exhibition represents the artist’s self-experience and memory. The files’ colors provide the found objects in the sketch series with bizarre, antiquated looks, expanding a unique dimension in the oriental aesthetics.

Take the sketch series as an example. Father and Son , Pregnant Woman , Know Each Other , Stay Together , and Father's Mother reflect imaginations about family. In the picture, a slightly dented seat makes the viewer feel a sense of human presence, and the human presences are given personalities and images through the depiction of different plants and through the appearance of plants and characters on hanging stone paintings. On the one hand, the sketch series continues the thought in the Space Series in that the plants reflect human relationships. On the other hand, the body weight that changes the chair presents the human presence; only that the brushstrokes in the sketch series were tenderer in depicting the accessibility of harmony. The stones in the picture present the texture of small objects such as snuff bottles, reflecting the oriental aesthetics practice of implying meaning through objects. Here, the found objects have the colors the artist favors, but in the meantime, they are also connected to the portrait painting tradition. For example, Daan and Zhongzheng Districts , Taipei City in the Census series is a special map mixed with pot plants and vegetation, or a special file of Fu’s walking routes. In this painting, the found objects are like the symbolic currency of marks or codes, being collected in the mountain imagery.

The “Ring Ring” exhibition presents the crucial moment when Fu’s works transformed. The usual investigation in the relationship between natural surrounding and humans acquired a more personal dimension and contained projections to external reality. In 2014, the wallpaper patterns were regular. In his attempt this year, plants are more like mysterious places, secretly displaying a community relationship stones imagine. The plant totems in Shattered Heart Over Ravaged Nature, A Narrow Door, and A Wounded Mountain are free of spatial constraint. This more or less reflects the weight of Fu’s visual recognition by component theory in the “Ring Ring” exhibition, and the negotiation and dialogue between symbols and reality. From the imagination about found objects to the production of social space, in the past four years, Fu has expanded the possibility of Taiwan’s surrealism and vision space. He has always cared about community relationships and the distance between self and others. It is worthwhile to dig, discover, and contemplate from the details in Fu’s paintings how painting presents his contemporariness in the tension between visual fantasy and the representation of tradition.

日常間一舉一動前的選擇,轉換成心靈,就像是在與自 身的信仰,有著無形的約定。當今複雜多變且相互影響 的大環境,使得人們越來越難以置身事外地選擇遠離污 染,或是履行良善的約定。漸漸地只希望來自於良心所 許下的約定,能被看重,能被持守,能不被遺忘,能成 為一舉一動前的提醒與安慰。
約定的立足點,不是取決於是否有相同的價值觀,抑或 是擁有滿足社會所期待的條件,反倒是一顆良善的心,
無論處在何種景況都願意選擇珍惜,願意更多捨己,只 為了能夠持延續一段段美善的關係。
近期的作品,選擇以戒指的形式,參與對世界現象的表 態。以平實廢棄的物件取代戒指上原先既定的寶石,不 同的物件搭配不同的故事,紀念著目前社會當下的階段,
反映在人與人之間的約定、人與大自然之間的約定,也 有一些是自我現狀的投射或是對盼望之中的期許。

Every choice a person makes in daily life is transformed into the mind, like an invisible bond with one’s religion. In the contemporary world that is complicated, capricious, and its components are affecting one another, it has become increasingly difficult for people to choose to stay away from pollutants and not to get involved, or to keep sincere promises. Gradually, people can only hope that the promises they make out of their conscience can be valued, be kept, will not be forgotten, and can become a reminder and comfort to them before they make a move. The basis of a promise is not whether both parties have the same value or own the criteria that meet social expectations. Rather, the basis is a kind heart that no matter in what situation is willing to choose to cherish the promise and to sacrifice oneself just to maintain beautiful and kind relationships. The recent works were chosen to be made in the form of rings as a way to take a stance in the world’s phenomena. Plain and abandoned objects were adopted to replace the customary gems on rings. Different objects are accompanied with different stories, commemorating the contemporary state of the society and reflecting the promises between humans and between human and Nature. Some of the objects are the projection of one’s current state or one’s hopes and expectations.

傅浩軒 1981 年 生 於 台 灣 桃園
2009 年及 2004 年分別畢業於國立台灣師範大學美術學
系碩士班和國立新竹師範學院(今國立清華大學)美勞 教育學系。擅長以細膩的筆觸營造出「細微的美」,他
把生活中所有印入眼簾的細節都納為描繪的對象,觀察 周遭各種細微的事物,並結合生命經驗所延伸出的畫面,

Ring Ring
In 2009, he received his MFA from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, and in 2004, he graduated from Arts and Crafts Education Department at National Hsinchu Teachers College (now National Tsing Hua University). Working with delicate brushstrokes, Fu creates “subtle beauty.” The objects he depicts are various details from his daily life and numerous delicate things from his surroundings which the artist tends to combine with his life experiences. He is good at cleverly arranging natural and artificial spaces. Anthropomorphic objects depicted in his paintings refer to the microscopic inner world of the artist. In 2006, Fu was selected for the 9th Rising Artist Award and won the second place in the Chinese Yuan Shan Art Association Dao Zheng New Artist Awards. In 2015, Unborn Generation was included in the collection of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
