Underwater Pier Brooklyn, New York City

The East River has played an important economic and industrial role in the past. As our relationship to it is changing we need to raise a greater awareness of its ecology. Because of contamination, the river has always been seen as a threat to the human body and people are always kept away from activities that engage the river. Located at the original Pier 4 that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, this new underwater pier offers both researchers and the public an opportunity to explore and inhabit the underwater world of East River.

The pier explores a new form of research facility with educational purposes. By locating it under water, a new typology and hybrid is established between the two modes of generating scientific knowledge: field research and lab reseach. The water, flowing within glass walls, separates the research space and public space, also forming an aquarium for the public. The large central volume serves as a learning space, and the three separated volumes with more dense plans are dedicated for scientific research.

7

8

9

10

High Tide

Inside the public volume, at high tide water falls down through a slot in the roof to create “curtains that define smaller zones for quiet study. The sound of the waterfall, as a type of white noise, becomes an acoustic barrier that encourages focused learning.

11

Low Tide

At low tide, these curtains disappear and the central space is enlarged to allow for fluid free movement that encourages communication and knowledge sharing. Therefore, the program and the vibe of the space change around every six hours based on the tidal fluctuation of East River.

12

13

The project addresses collectivity in two aspects. First, it connects the scientific research with the public by on-site learning and direct communication. Second, In this pier the scientists and researchers are in greater contact with the natural world and their object of study. The interior spatial change directly responds to the change of the environment, which establishes a more intimate relationship between human and nature. This underwater pier becomes a heterotopia where different spaces and different life forms coexist.

14

The Core Bronx, New York City

The design of this housing complex explores the possibiliy to live in various cores in order to maximize density and light. Packing the amenities and programs into the dense cores allows the living space to be more free and dynamic. Each floor becomes more porious as it goes up.

All of the cores provide structural support for all the floor slabs. The public cores are located in the center of each block to connect all the unit cores on the four sides. All the unit cores are very densely placed near the perimeter to allow for more sunlight and cross ventilation.

22

23

Plan Matrix

Arranging most of the programs into vertical cores provides an opportunity to have the freedom for the perimeter, both for the building and for the units. As the level goes up, the voids in the floor changes to allow light to come into the public area.

Thermal Workshop Red Hook, New York City

Red Hook is transforming into a local art-hub that embraces artists and craftmen into the community The design of this art institution focuses on the issue of environmental efficiency by studying the energy flow through art-related activities. Heat, as an energy form, is produced and wasted most of the time in the art production process conventionally. By developing three different enclosure types, this building collects and reuses the surplus heat produced by artistic processes, which, as a paradox, allows the interior to have a constant exchange with the exterior.

Q & A Library Brooklyn, New York City

The Question & Answer Library is a service-based knowledge exchange center in Downtown Brooklyn. This library builds on a crowd-sourcing concept where the community is encouraged to learn from each other. Experts of various subject matter within the community serve as the “librarians to any sector of public interested in learning about a particular subject matter.

Critic: Erica Goetz

Study of Vertical Structure

49

50

51

The building is composed of double-height, long-span structural walls that span the whole site. The walls stack, intersect and interlock to form the interior spaces of the library. Circular openings are formed at the intersections. In section, these openings are extruded to form spiral stairs that connect platforms of service and served and provide internal openness within the density of spaces.

5th Level

The pattern of spaces in plan resembles a skewed checkerboard with alternating servant and served spaces. Interaction between these two user types, which is constantly changing depending on who is occupying the building, happens across the walls.

54

Each wall is composed of steel shelves that form the structural web and store the books. Windows in these walls create spaces of exchange between the experts and the public. Through the repositioning of users and who and where the knowledge is stored and shared, the building becomes a dynamic fixture in the community which may continue to be inhabited in new ways.

The Sway East River, New York City

Water has great therapeutic attributes. Together with the surrounding landscape and the city skyline, a bath-house offers people a moment to escape the urban environment and to relax, meditate, and re-energize. A public bath offers an opportunity for people in New York City to inhabit the water.

Plan (with Current)

The system is composed of filtered pools, transformable enclosures, floating platforms and paths. The pools function as collective spaces for outdoor activities. The shelters are enclosed spaces for private indoor activities. Anchored to the shoreline, the pier network sways with the fluctuations of tide and currents.

60

The shelters have 4 sizes and multiple states, forming intimate space for private meditation, changing facilities, lockers, and large social space for group events.

The Flow Queens, New York City

“Flow is a theatre and micro-brewery located at Flushing, Queens. Structurally, moment frames define the fluid nature of the spaces. Visual and physical connections are established between layers of programs, from street to tasting room to brewery to courtard. Opennable facade along Myrtle Street invites people into the building. The heritage of the area is celebrated by exposing the brewing process.

Flat-Pack is a customized funiture set for a classroom space at the University Student Sustainable Farm. The tables nd benches are designed to be easily and intuitively assembled and disassembled without any adhesives, relying completely on a mortise-and-tenon construction method. The proposal adds the playfulness to the space and adapts to different needs and uses of the room.

86

87

88

The prototype explores the capabilities of a simple material (plywood) combined with CNC milling technology. The optimization within the process allows for two furniture sets to be cut from three standard 4x8’ sheets of plywood, one set at adult scale and one at children scale.

89

The design also features a large storage wall on the north side of the classroom, constructed of wooden 2x4’s and white pegboard, in which the Flat-Pack can be stored and displayed on.
