1. Open Adobe InDesign 2. File à New à Document
3. Set number of pages, which will most likely be one. If a spread, make 3 pages. 4. Set Page Size to Tabloid 5. Under Columns, set number to 7 6. Save this preset by pressing the icon with an arrow on the top right of this screen. It is located to the left of the trash can.
7. Document should open 8. Go to Google Drive (on desktop through icon by wifi symbol). 9. Go to the Lance folder and find the libraries folder 10. Find you name and double click and open library Note: Sometimes it can be a little pesky. If it doesn’t work at first, repeat steps until you see a library. Once that happens, drag library to sidebar under color. You should hopefully have easy access to your library.

11. After finding page on Trello, begin to layout page. 12. Always include page number and section (written in all caps). This can be found in the library. Use the mouse to click and drag it from the library. Place it so it aligned at the top of the “7-column box” (where there 7 columns are…not the box where there are no lines. 13. You also need a headline. There are 3 types of headlines you will most likely use for a story: Hammer 72 (the biggest), Hammer 60 (medium), and Hammer 48 (smallest). If there are two stories on a page, you will want the bigger headline on top. Begin by placing the headline one “square” below the page number. NOTE: In InDesign to VIEW>GRIDS&GUIDES>Show Document Grid 14. Go to the T symbol located on the left sidebar. Use this to make a textbox that is 2 columns wide. 15. Hit Command D so you can place the story in there. Note: Make sure the story is in Google Drive and in a word document. Story cannot be placed if it is in a pages or google document. 17. Now that your story appears, go the A symbol in the toolbar. 18. Change the font to Times New Roman and the font size to 10. Then justify the writing by hitting the “justify lines” symbol next to the “left-aligned” symbol.

19. Go to the textbox and stretch the height of the box until you are midway through the page. There should be a pink line that comes up to mark this. 20. Now click the red box with the cross. This allows your story to automatically continue. Note: NEVER copy and paste your story. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER 21. Stretch this box across 2 columns and pull down to the same height. 22. Go to the top of the story and press return 3 times. Go to the library and place your byline in that space. NOTE: Go to the paperclip and indent your story (First line left indent). Click in the textbox and click command A then indent to “1p0 23. If your story does not extend to the rest of the page, place a pulled quote in your story from the library. This quote should represent your story and grab the attention of readers. That usually does the trick.

24. If your story has more text, there are options: a. If there’s a paragraph or two left, make a new textbox to be placed under a picture. This should be two columns wide. The caption will go next to it. b. If there’s a sentence left, mess around with text boxes and get it to fit in there. You can cheat the design A LITTLE. c. Use the tricks above AND make the headline smaller. That can help fit in more words. d. Ask the chiefs to fudge your page.
26. If there is a story underneath the story on top, repeat steps 13-25 with the story mirroring the other story. So, if in the story above the photos were to the right of the story, now place photos to the left of the story. 27. If there is an ad below, use the same icon you did for pictures and create a rectangle(s) with the proper ad size(s).

25. Place pictures. This should be done by using the icon on the left sidebar that looks like a rectangle with a big X in it. Then getting a photo from Google Drive by using Command D. Depending on how many pictures and the space you have, pictures can be arranged in 3 ways. a. One large vertical photo that is 3 columns wide. Caption would be placed directly underneath. b. One horizontal photo that is 3 columns wide with one vertical photo (only 2 columns wide) underneath that. The caption would be one column wide and to the right of the vertical photo. c. Usually, if you have a full page, you will have one large photo that stretches across all 7 columns. Note: Try to choose pictures with faces looking towards, not away, from the story.
