eing Editor in Chief of LSMAG allows me to meet other creative minds and to inspire myself and others to work to their full potential. Living in the Pacific Northwest and being raised on the east coast keeps me longing for the familiar. I was elated when I met Tracy Perez who is holding it down as a Film Director, Actress, Model and whatever else she decides to put her mind to. Oh and the icing on the cake is she is Bi-coastal. What a life! Splitting time between her New York City and Los Angeles, she stays busy but never fails to deliver when it comes to representing her work. Tracy was able to share some of time and thoughts with LSMAG so make sure you stay tuned for her interview and photo shoot. For majority of the summer I have been seeped in my own thoughts wondering if I am living to my fullest potential ‌ but is anybody? Friends that I once ran the city with have moved on to marriages, children, careers and a new life across the pond in the United Kingdom. Karen Knight is back with her own column English 101. In it Karen discusses her married life and adjusting to the customs and culture of the English. This issue is packed with fashion tips from Jessica Adjemon, Ask Wendy and a pocket guide on what to do when you are going through a break-up. You know you have to be in best stiletto sand rockin’ the hottest outfits. The staff and I are looking forward to hearing your reactions on this issue. ACTING BEYOND THE PART Excerpts of foreword by Tracy Perez/Photos by Taye Hansberry
When pondering the pursuit of acting, actress/producer/model Tracy Perez envisioned a career where she could push the boundaries of how women of color are perceived in theater and film, to approach roles varying in depth and range. Tracy talks with LSMAG about acting in today’s industry, while modeling in a fashion forward photo story by photographer Taye Hansberry
Why acting? Was it something that you have always wanted to do? I took a lot of detours figuring out what I wanted to do for a career. I grew up with chronic asthma, so I couldn’t participate in sports or be reliable when it came to after school activities. I would watch a lot of movies and tv instead. I was a shy kid so I daydreamed a lot and when I would read books, I empathized to a degree that seemed bigger than me. My sisters were big readers, so that’s where I discovered storytelling. I was accepted into the Drama Department at Syracuse University but I didn’t feel like it was the right time for acting, even though deep down I wanted to do it. Something was telling me to try something else with my degree so I became an English major and studied film theory and history. Acting was never seen as the “reasonable” choice where I came from. I didn’t grow up with family in the business or any friends who made a living out of it, so it was this mysterious thing I had to get a hold of. I just had to resign and say ok, let’s play. What is your favorite part of being an actor? Creating a new world and sharing it, having it live on. Being open and present. Discoveries. Meeting people from all walks of life who are crazy passionate. Finding keys to the human condition. And the worst? It’s not the respected profession it should be. And this goes way back. Our kind would be killed back in the day, so I’m talking about the value system. This country says the arts don’t matter, unless an artist is making bank. Oh and that little thing called being at the mercy of things beyond your control for a job. You could be great,
but in a business that relies on relationships more than talent sometimes, you could be out of a job before you even slate your name. But that’s any business, really. What is your dream role? That is really hard for me to say because I immediately start putting a super-hero warrior queen sci-fi trilogy in my head that no one’s written yet. I guess that means I should. Who is your dream co-star? Meryl Streep in a comedy. There, I said it. Working in the acting industry is pretty risky. One minute you’re in, the next minute you’re out. Did this have any effect on your choice to be an actor? With the way the world is now, you can think you’re playing it safe but it can be pulled from under your feet. We are living in the riskiest times. The biggest risk is not following your heart and taking your life for granted. That’s no man’s land. Which do you prefer - film or theater? And why? It’s very hard for me to have a preference for one at this point, so early in my career, because I’m trying to do both for the love of what they bring and I can’t navigate where the winds will blow. And it would probably make my life easier if I can just set my sights on one. Theater is an actor’s art. A live audience is irreplaceable, it’s powerful, it’s in our bloodline. I think in pictures, so film is a medium that feels very natural to me. It’s very collaborative and challenging in its own way. Sure, it’s a director’s medium, but we’re building that vision together. I love that element of it, where it feels like you’re in a traveling circus and

“ cting was never seen as the “reasonable” choice where I came from. I didn’t grow up with family in the business or any friends who made a living out of it, so it was this mysterious thing I had to get a hold of. I just had to resign and say ok, let’s play.”
everyone has a part in making this happen. There’s something very magical when you can blend technology and people to create a story. I love that film can reach so many different people too. Your MySpace page says that you “envisioned a career where you could push the boundaries of how women of color are perceived in theater and film.” Would you care to expound? Well if you’re playing the “spicy” (yes that term does get used in character descriptions) girlfriend or the gangsta girl and then want to switch it up, it’s a lot harder. I want to use my range to play Middle Eastern, Spanish, Greek, East Indian, Italian. I love learning about different cultures. And women have really great stories beyond playing second fiddle to the stud. A lot of it has to do with who holds the pen and who writes the check. I don’t only want to be a shape-shifter, I want to be the one who makes the shifting possible. There have been some pivotal breakthroughs lately in the industry and that’s what makes me believe it can happen. I like to march to a different beat, that’s the excitement. What has been the most enriching experience for you as an actor till date? I didn’t know it when I was shooting the trailer, but going back into it with a different consciousness now, it would be my short, Breathe Easy. I was going through a really hard personal time and the desire for wanting to create something again after being in the shadows, made me realize that I hadn’t even scratched the surface of what I could do. I was always about finding my own path and learning to be better when it came to
acting. There was some needless suffering there because I didn’t know better. But I didn’t realize I had the power to do more until the trailer was shot and it meant it was the beginning of something more. I had already produced a short, but it was shooting in my homeboy’s place, in my old hood, in streets laced with memories that were mine. My biggest transformation ended up being a little more local. Ironically enough, it motivated me to make some moves in LA. Which of the plays/films you have worked on was your personal favorite? My favorite was my first play at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in Alphabet City. It was Miguel Pinero’s one-act, Sideshow. Crazy NYC kids having fun with some heavy material. If you could change one thing about the film industry, what would it be? Put money in diverse stories and people and chill with the 3D for a second. What inspires you as an actor? Music, my niece and nephews. They’re little nuggets of love and exploration. Love, really. I’ve never moved forward without it. Any parting words of advice for aspiring actors? Learn as much as you can about the business but don’t neglect your art. You have to learn to manage both. Remember to work on what you can control and let be what you can’t. Be genuine in your encounters. And now I will take my own advice! twitter.com/Tracy_Perez imdb.com/name/nm1659569/ myspace.com/tracyperezonline

LS FASHION
THE STYLE MAVEN Words and Photo by Jessica Adjemon
There are so many choices and different styles are out on the market in fashion today. Jessica Adjemon helps fashion lovers make heads and tales out of the season’s hottest styles. LSMAG got a peek into her busy life and a close glimpse into her career
A
fter interning for PR boutique People’s Revolution during the fall 2003 and spring 2004 Mercedes Benz LA Fashion Week I decided to become a wardrobe stylist. Working next to designers like Celine, Petro Zilia, Jeremy Scott and seeing how they get their concepts together and create the style board for a runway production made me say “I want to be the person that puts that together.” The projects that I’m most proud of are styling and producing runway shows (VOOM by Joy Han, Holy Grail, Jen Awad, Maria Bianca Nero at Neiman Marcus). My favorite celebrity to work with was Micah Pfeiffer. Being able to show the artistic realm of
styling and fashion is what I love to do most. Editorials and runway productions are definitely my outlets to do so. My day to day activities consist of a lot of on-line research before I step into a showroom to pull. When given a specific idea for a shoot I like to go on-line and Google the looks or style and search which designers/showrooms have what I need to create the right aesthetic. Once that’s done I’m off to the showrooms or a designer’s work space to collect my chosen pieces. From there I put my desired looks together and prep for the shoot. There’s times when I’ll be meet with designers to look at their new lines and potentially doing their next look-book or runway show. Hitting the LA streets for fashion events, restaurant openings,
“Being able to show the artistic realm of styling and fashion is what I love to do most. Editorials and runway productions are definitely my outlets to do so. ” and gallery showings are always fun and a great way to get new potential clients. Wrap it up with some wine and cookies and call it a night. The best way to get started in your venture into wardrobe styling is to first go to school and learn the essentials of designing and color concepts (fabrics, hues, tones, textures, history of garments, styles/designs through the periods). The next thing I would suggest is to become an assistant to someone who is going to actually teach you the things not learned in school (styling techniques, which patterns don’t work on camera or in certain lighting, how to steam...a lot of people don’t know how) and allow
you to be hands on and pro active before, during and after a shoot. Also it’s very important to start building your portfolio and doing as many test shoots as possible. That will help with visually see what you’re doing right or wrong. Ask for constructive criticism. NOTE: Because you being able to dress yourself and having personal style DOES NOT mean you’re a stylist. Not everyone can or should dress like you.
JESSICA’S TIPS
My “must have” suggestions for the summer are very fun...to me at least. *There are pieces that are still around from fall 2009 like military. * A piece like a military jacket can be matched up with hot shorts and espadrilles or any other hot 4-5 inch wedges with over the knee high socks. *Patterned and printed pants with a complementing top. *Ethnic pieces and prints (D&G, Sass & Bide, Emmanuel Alt). *I love the sheer/see-through tops. *Ripped denim isn’t going anywhere! So let some air in. *Denim anything!!! *Bold deep strong colors...patterns and prints are welcoming for the summer. Some tips on transitioning from winter to summer are... *Lose the heavy coats, scarves. *No more “all black everything”...it was fun while it lasted. *Bolder colors and patterns to introduce life in this season. *Think simple layers. myspace.com/fashionista1027

Keeping time is essential, so this summer take off those frilly bracelets and sport a watch
G
eek is the new chic with the coolest look this summer – sports watches. Although these kinds of watches can be rather large and very casual, they’re fun and trendy too. However, the best feature of these sports watches is that they are the perfect everyday accessory. They will go Tommy Hilfiger with all those casual, beach clothes you will be rocking these upcoming months. Plus, a lot of the sports watches are water proof, so there’s no need to take them off when you’re taking a dip in the pool or splashing around on the beach. These colorful watches also provide youthful vibes that give everyone and anyone the chance to be young and hip this summer.

inx is a fabulous edition to the nail art family! Minx is like wallpaper for the fingers and toes, it comes in lots of different colours, patterns which would suit everyone’s needs. Celebs such as Beyonce, Rhianna and Fergie have been seen flashing beautiful designs on their fingers, so if they’re good enough for them- they’re good enough for you! Minx are applied buy a technician; so that means you can’t do it yourself at home. They are skilfully cut to size and heated under a lamp, then buffed onto your nails. The process isn’t long at all- in fact it’s a lot quicker than sitting there under a lamp waiting for nail lacquer to dry! Once completed, you don’t have to worry about smudges or movement- the results are instant. Minx are supposed to last about 4 weeks, but obviously this all depends on how you treat your nails- I’m a make-up artist on the go with 2 kids to sort out daily, and my Minx looked fresh for about 2 weeks- which is still great when we’re talking about nail polish! LS TRAVEL
THE HOT SPOT By Angela Clay/ Photos by Eve Stein
Editor in Chief Angela Clay tells LSMAG all about her favorite place to hangout. With chic interiors and great wine to offer, no wonder Imbibe is at the top of her list
T
here are many places that I use to go to and relax when I lived back east. Being Editor in Chief of LSMAG has afforded me many opportunities to collaborate with artists, designers and musicians. When I want to unwind there is a little spot that I like to sneak off to called Imbibe, it’s a jazzy little wine bar that gives me that little jolt of the city when needed. I was able to interview the owner of Imbibe located in Moses Lake WA, to get her thoughts on being an owner of a swanky business and also to inspire others who want to start their own gigs. To all of you who flock to the Gorge for the Dave Matthews concert every September put this on your list of places to see.
What is Imbibe? Imbibe is an art and wine gathering place. It is a place you can enjoy a glass of wine and relax in an aesthetically pleasing and artistically inspired environment. Conceptually, the art gallery was to be the main component of imbibe, as I wanted a forum to show/sell my work (photography) and offer the same opportunity to other local artists. Unfortunately, in small rural areas, dedicated art galleries rarely thrive unless subsidized by the government, corporations or foundations. I chose to subsidize the gallery with wine sales and thus added the wine shop portion. There was not a wine shop in Moses Lake at that time, and wine and art are natural partners, so this idea seemed to fill a need and a niche in the community.

LS ART
IT’S ALL NATURAL By Angela Clay/ Artwork by Dawn Okoro
When I looked at Dawn Okoro’s artwork, I saw myself, friends and all those other women out there who didn’t have a voice in the art community at one time. Anyone can splash some paint on a stark white piece of canvas and call it art but only when it motivates and moves a person is it worth talking about. Your artwork says what about you? What has shaped you? My art says that I am inquisitive about human nature. I am interested in the lengths that we as humans are willing to go in order to feel desired and loved. My experiences and upbringing have shaped me. I remember as a child, I would spend a lot of time perusing fashion magazines wanting to feel glamorous like the models. My art challenges those feelings and breaks them down. In your opinion, what do you feel is lacking in today’s art industry? There is an abundance of work that is praised in the art world simply because the artist had the nerve to do it. Art that the average person without a master’s degree in fine art would not find any meaning in at all seems to be encouraged. Although it is important that my work has meaning, aesthetic quality is very important to me. I want viewers to connect.

y art says that I am inquisitive about human nature. I am interested in the lengths that we as humans are willing to go in order to feel desired and loved. ”
Art and fashion go hand in hand, what are your thoughts on what that means for artists? Fashion is art. A basic example is the fact that designing is a form of art and someone with a creative mind had to design the clothes that we are wearing. On the other end, there are guys like Alexander McQueen. I watched a documentary about his life a while back and he expressed that it was very important for him to design something that no one had seen before. Along with the clothes, his runway shows and productions were truly art installations within themselves.
Many black women were socialized to think that tightly coiled hair is ugly and shameful. Now, so many of these women are seeing the beauty in their “nappy” hair and what is growing from their heads has become a symbol of strength and pride.
Has there ever been a time when you felt like your art was misunderstood? My art is constantly misunderstood. I have been asked, why I don’t just paint landscapes, or flowers so that I can make more money. Many people simply have a very limited view of what art is.
Are there any artist(s) that inspire you? There so many artists that inspire me. Some of the artists I am inspired by are Richard Avedon, David LaChappelle, and Steven Meisel.
For a few years I have wanted to go natural, so I finally did it. It caused me to have a real deep look into who I am. Why do you think for those of us going natural it’s such an awakening?
How separate are you from your art work? I think it is impossible to separate me from my art concepts. Either I have experienced what my subjects are going through, I’ve witnessed something, or I am just curious about a particular topic.
What are some of your future goals for Dawn Okoro? I am working on larger scale art pieces as well as art in different forms besides painting. Other than that, I just want to grow as an artist and continue to get better. dawnokoro.com

Some inquiring minds want to know what’s hot for summer and how to dress like the infamous Coco Chanel. No need to worry as Wendy is here to answer all your fashion questions. All you need to stay chic this season is a flattering pair of shorts, platform glads and skinnies. After you are all dolled up be sure to use sunscreen, and then grab your sunnies and hat and head out the door

THE SHORT SCENE what kinds of shorts should I be sporting this summer? Amanda, 21 Redlands
Q:
GET GLAD
Are glads still glad in? Brittany 23, New York
G
lads, or gladiators as they are known to some, are still right on time in my fashion book. If you are tired of the traditional ones then why not go for glads with studs, a platform, or a metallic pair. Any of these will keep you on trend without feeling outdated.

TREND WATCH: s/S .10 HIGHLIGHTS
ummer of 2010 takes a walk back into the 90s with hot pants and boy shorts at the top of the list for this season. I know the thought of “hot pants” can cause a severe panic attack unless you have been hitting the gym hard! Nonetheless there are ways to stay on trend but maintain your diginity, the key is moderation. Try a vintage denim, bold color, or patterned look in a high waisted fit, it’s not too short and super cute with everything!
TIPS
ant to look fab this summer but your pockets are low? An easy way to do this is to start with your skin. If you have flawless, radiant skin that will be the first thing people notice, not whether you are wearing last season’s pradas or not. By drinking lots of water, using sunblock, and eating healthy you will definitely be looking fab all summer long. Or perhaps you are a label lusting fashionista, why not sign up with some sample sale sites like Gilt, Ideeli, or Rue la la to be notified when items go on sale. You will surely get your designer fix but still be able to pay the rent. Happy shopping!

COCO CLASSIC
I want to dress like Coco Chanel but at the same time not look aged. any advice? glenda 19, NYC

he key to dressing or appearing more sophisticated is all about presentation. When I say that I mean your poise, attitude, and mind-set. It doesn’t matter if you are wearing a infamous Chanel suit or one from Ann Taylor; sophistication and class is all in how you carry yourself. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be dressed up to be chic, you can be casual too as long as your clothes are clean and neat. Take note from the following pieces to pull off Coco’s signature grace and style while maintaining your youth.

ow I know that it is hard to think of Fall when the temps outside is hitting 90 almost daily! However, if you take a look around in some of your fave stores you will see that they are pushing out summer merchandise (sales!) and bringing in early Fall. On that note I felt the need to join in on falling for fall by casting my vote for See by Chloe.
