This unit provides an introduction to the main production processes, styles, planning and techniques used Music Programme Production. This unit is linked with the learning in Unit 14: Audio Package Production, Unit 17: Radio Magazine Programming, Unit 20:Music Programme Production, Unit 2: Research Methods

Assignment Outline The purpose of this unit is to help you gain an understanding of music programme production. As you know, this is a dynamic area of radio programming, and in order for you to make music programmes of broadcast quality it is important to first consider ideas such as audience research, formats, existing market, target audience and broadcast outlet. It is also important to gain an understanding and appreciation of the different types of production techniques employed in making successful music programmes. You are asked to write an individual pitch for your own one hour or 30 minute music programme. In this pitch you should consider the examples listened to and discussed in class, as well as your own listening and your own musical interests and experiences. This pitch will decide the format and style for the music programme you will self op and produce later in the year. You will also include an hour or half hour clock for your programme. It will indicate at a glance the ratio of talk:music, what occurs where and will give an indication of what songs will be played when. It will also include a fixed point for a station ident every 15 minutes (ie there will be 5 fixed points for an hour long show or 3 for a 30 minute show). At a minimum for speech content you must announce or back ref each piece of music.

Presentation Format The following presentation formats are recommended when submitting your essay for assessment: Oral Pitch Hour Clock This oral pitch should be no more than five minutes. If you are uncomfortable carrying out an oral pitch a written one will suffice at 1200 words (minimum 1000 words). The clock should be professionally presented. The project should be submitted printed out on A4 paper and in a folder; you must include a cover page that includes your name, class, tutor, unit and project title. Your project should be presented using the guidelines set out in your Course Handbook.

Assessment Components The project is assessed through the following integrated units of assessment. Title Unit No. Learning Outcome No. Music Programme Production
