This unit provides an introduction to the main production processes, styles, planning and techniques used in Promotional Video Production. This unit is linked with the learning in Unit 1: Contextual Studies, Unit 2: Media Industries, Unit 3: Research Techniques, Unit 4: Media Project, Unit 5: Production Management and Unit 31: Film and Television Drama Production.

Assignment Outline The purpose of this unit is to help you gain an understanding of promotional video and professional practice. As you know, this is a diverse and dynamic area of the media industries, and in order for you to make promotional videos of broadcast quality, it is important to first gain an understanding of the codes, conventions, styles and current practice in promotional video. You are asked to write an individual pitch for your own Promotional Video Production, considering the viewings we have done in class, your own viewings and your own interests and experiences. From these pitches we will decide which ideas will be developed and produced as group projects for Assignment 2 of the unit.

Presentation Format

The following presentation formats are recommended when submitting your work for assessment: Written Pitch. This essay should be no more than 2000 words (minimum 1500 words). The project should be submitted printed out on A4 paper and in a folder; you must include a cover page that includes your name, class, tutor, unit and project title. Your project should be presented using the guidelines set out in your Course Handbook.

Deliverables You are asked to pitch an individual idea for a Promotional Video. The completed pitch should be between 1500-2000 words and should adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Give a brief overview of your individual programme idea (250-300 words) 2. Identify and discuss a style for your programme. Do this in reference to existing productions, mentioning at least three. (They do not necessarily have to be those viewed in class.) -Genre -Theme tune/music (artist/song) -Presenter/ing style -Programme structure 3. Outlet/Target Audience -Who -When -Where -Why 4. Identify Personnel -Production Team -Actors/Contributors -Camera/Light/sound/make-up/vo artist etc -Who/How many in team 5.
