This unit provides an introduction to the main production processes, styles, planning and techniques used documentary filmmaking. This unit is linked with the learning in Unit 1: Contextual Studies, Unit 2: Media Industries, Unit 3: Research Techniques, Unit 8: Practical Skills Moving Image and Unit 26: Camera and Lighting Workshop.

Assignment Outline The purpose of a documentary is to communicate a particular story to a specific audience. In order for you to make good documentary programmes, it is important that you first gain an understanding of the different types of documentary that are out there. When putting together any programme idea, you must look at and consider details such as genre, purpose of production, target audience and broadcast outlet. It is also important to gain an understanding and appreciation of the different types of production techniques employed to make documentary programmes for both film and television. In originating ideas, you must consider the practical, resource and time limitations for each production, as this will affect the type of programmes you can realistically produce. You are asked to write an individual pitch for your own Documentary, considering the viewings we have done in class, your own viewings and your own interests and experiences. From these pitches we will decide which ideas will be developed and produced as group projects for Assignment 2 of the unit.

Presentation Format The following presentation formats are recommended when submitting your essay for assessment: Written Pitch. This essay should be no more than 2000 words (minimum 1500 words). The project should be submitted printed out on A4 paper and in a folder; you must include a cover page that includes your name, class, tutor, unit and project title. Your project should be presented using the guidelines set out in your Course Handbook.
