UNIT 49: WORK EXPERIENCE IN THE MEDIA INDUSTRIES WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT Having completed your period of work placement, you will then have to reflect on and evaluate the experience in your WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT. You may present this report in either a written (typed report) or verbal format (presentation to class) whichever best suits you. However, you must ensure that whatever format you adopt, your report covers all the requirements of the learning outcomes as indicated below. The report is basically asking you to REFLECT on and EVALUATE the following things: -

how the industry learning and development of skills you expected as decided in your learning objectives may have differed from the actual experience of placement.

-

how your own skills, knowledge and attitudes have developed over the course of the placement (how you have improved or can improve your skills, how suited you are to the job you undertook, whether this job is for you, what new have you learned practically and from an attitudinal perspective on how best to succeed in eventually obtaining employment in the Media Industries etc)

-

what you learned about industry working practices and working relationships from your observations and participation(how programmes are made by industry professionals, how people work professionally in their various roles, the day to day experience of what it is to do this job in the industry)

-

how work experience has changed or altered your future plans for getting into the industry.

The WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT is a key factor in attaining Merit and Distinction grades in this Unit. Learners wishing to attain higher grades must show good evidence in their report OF EVALUATING YOU OWN PERFORMANCE AND LEARNING AGAINST YOUR STATED OBJECTIVES. This should involve a high level of reflection on the process of securing and undertaking Work Experience, considered industry learning, a high level of self reflection and critical evaluation of their own performance and suggestions for realistic and considered plans for their future career arising out of their experience. Complete the Work Experience report by answering the following questions AS PER THE TMEPLATE BELOW. Again, if you choose to make a verbal presentation, you must follow the template below to ensure that you cover all the requirements of the learning outcomes. WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT TEMPLATE YOU MUST ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS TO MEET LEARNING OUTCOMES 3 and 4 (a) Introduction Name: Placement Providers: Your Job description/Title: Productions Worked on: (b) Learning about Industry Please REFLECT ON what you learned about the working practices and the professional relationships in the area of the industry in which you undertook work experience and how this differed from what you knew or expected as outlined in your learning objectives in advance of work experience - to do this address the following: -

Profile the company/individual you were placed with, summarising the work done by the company/individual (what

exactly does a news cameraman do, Folly artist, Director on a short film etc etc) and explaining how the company is organised or how the individual works within that company (e.g. how many people employed and what they all do/one man show or quite a large department in a big broadcaster etc/ how the news camera dept works, how assignments are given etc). -

Describe the skills required – creative, technical, organisational, people skills and management, networking, production skills etc - to do their jobs by the key personnel in the area of employment in which you were working (For example - what skills does a vision mixer have to have? What skills are required for live on-air production? What skills are by a news cameraman or promo’s editor in TV? What skills does a Production assistant or Manager require to be effective in their job?) ELABORATE WELL HERE.

-

What have you learned about industry working relationships from your observations and participation (how people work professionally in their various roles, the day to day experience of what it is to do this job in the industry - Some examples how does an editor or cameraman work with the director/reporter/Client? How does the floor manager work to the Director in the box or with cast on the floor? How does a freelance Radio reporter work to/with a series producer/editor? How does crew to the director on live events/shows? How does a director work the cameraman on short film? How does a freelance sound op etc work effectively with a client etc etc). Please give specific examples from your experience to support your comments.

-

What new have you learned about the production processes of programmes/reports/packages etc? E.g. how are practical and creative decisions made in production situations? How camera op shoots doco sequences, how a director prepares to direct? How researcher sets up contributors for live radio show? How does the 'chain if command' operate on a Live Radio Broadcast TX/in Production meetings/Within the facilities house – editor to assts to dubbing mixer etc etc ELABORATE WELL HERE. Please give specific examples from your experience to support your comments.

(c) Vocational Development Please REFLECT ON AND EVALUATE how your work experience has helped you to develop vocationally. To do this, please address: -

Evaluate your approach to securing work experience in the first place, how effective was it? How could you improve on it?

-

Reflect overall on how you think you performed on your work placement- be honest here as it is your honest reflection that gets the marks in this section. What do you think you did to the best of your ability? (mixing well and networking effectively, asking useful questions, finding ways to make yourself useful to a production/on a shoot etc) Where and how could you have improved your performance? (Learned more technically in advance so you understood better the tasks in hand, been less shy in asking for tasks to be clarified, networking more effectively etc. EXPLAIN YOUR THINKING AND ELABORATE WELL ON THIS. Please cite specific examples to illustrate your answer.

-

Comment on your EMPLOYERS REPORT form - based on this and your general discussions with supervisor and co-workers throughout your placement, what skills, qualities, knowledge or attitudes do you feel you need to develop to eventually obtain employment in the Media Industries etc? How might you now go about doing that? ELABORATE WELL HERE.

-

Consider again what you hoped to learn about working in your chosen area of the industry and the skills you hoped to develop while on placement (people skills, technical, networking production etc) AS DISCUSSED WITH TUTOR AND STATED IN YOUR LEARNING OBJECTIVES- evaluate how useful your placement was in helping you meet these objectives? If you found it difficult to attain any of your objectives on placement, why was this so and how did you deal with it? How would you deal with differently with this in future? How did what you learn differ from what you expected in advance of your placement? EXPLAIN YOUR THINKING AND ELABORATE WELL ON THIS.

-

Reflect on how what you’ve observed/experienced has changed your plans (if it has!) for your future career (are you more determined to be a camera op than ever? Did you come

across a job – PA, script supervisor, locations manager, casting etc – that you were previously unaware of and you might like to do?). ELABORATE WELL HERE. -

From what you observed and advice from your supervisor, what realistic suggestions would you now have for getting work in industry? (Further training/networking/more work experience/purchasing own equipment/showreels/joining union etc). ELABORATE WELL HERE.
