Officials from the city council in charge of the cemetery tell us that the bodies dumped along the path were all brought by families who couldn't afford to pay. Outside the cemetery, a man is sitting on a car looking busy. He is keeping a registry of the new arrivals. He already has 210 names on his list, some identified by just their first name. An elderly man walks out of the -cemetery, looking weary and clutching a handkerchief to his face. He has just put his sister and niece into the family tomb. Marie Eve Alcindor, 63, and Sarah, 32, died when the roof of the family clothes shop fell on them. Marie Eve had arrived in Port-au-Prince one week before the earthquake to visit her family. She had come from New York, where she worked as a paediatrician. "My sister was a doctor and she cared for children," says Jean-Pierre Alcindor. "So for her to come here, die here, and now we cannot even care for her body with dignity – do you know how that feels?" Marie Eve's own children had wanted to take her body back to America for burial. But there were no trucks to carry her, no flights, no companies that would take her. After five days, the body by now decomposing, they called off the effort and ventured instead into the Grand Cimetière. Standing beside Jean-Pierre Alcindor was his nephew Orel. He survived because when the

family shop collapsed, he was at the back of the building and managed to crouch under a car that protected him. He was pulled from the rubble for hours after the quake, bearing scratches on his head and arms but otherwise unharmed "This country was bad long before this," he says. "But now the earthquake has exposed the true face of Haiti." There is nothing unusual about the story of the Alcindors. Everybody in this city has been touched by death. Many thousands are now struggling with a -double challenge: to keep themselves alive in a city without water and food, and to give their loved ones who have died merely the basic, lowliest goodbye. Details emerge unexpectedly. Our driver, who is from the Dominican Republic, Rafael, asked us to make a detour. He wanted to deliver $60 to his good friend Kelya, who had been his secretary a few years ago when he lived in Port-au-Prince. He had heard that she was having trouble with the arrangements for her brother Marcos, who died at work when his office collapsed. His body was being kept at a local funeral home, with only a ceiling fan to keep it from rotting. The funeral home demanded $1,200 to give Marcos a proper burial. With the price came a threat: pay up the money today, or Marcos will be sent to one of the mass graves

that have been opened up outside the city. The average income in Haiti is under $400 a year. Kelya could not pay. "We can't stand the idea of not having a concrete place where we will be able to pray for my brother," Kelya told us. In the end, with the help of Rafael's donation and countless others like it from family, neighbours and friends, she managed to raise $600. Then she persuaded the funeral home to accept half now, the rest later. Marcos will not end up cast away in a mass grave after all. Instead he will be given a funeral in a small Catholic church near Kelya's home. We drive past another Catholic church, L'Eglise Sacré Coeur de Jésus, a few miles away. It was shattered in the earthquake. Its massive stained glass window at the back has fallen in one great slab, and now lies propped up against the cracked wall at a 45degree angle. The front of the church has fared even worse. It has almost entirely been reduced to rubble. The only thing left standing is a wooden effigy of Jesus on the cross. Beneath it is an inscription in the stone bearing the date of the church, 1928. It reads: "That in your love and caring, oh Lord, Haiti will live and prosper." • Haiti ROOM page 5

Water-purification units The squabbling came amid signs – a priority to avert disease and

dehydration – were arriving. But with aftershocks jolting the ruins, bloated bodies in the street and severe shortages of water and food many survivors had had enough: an exodus trekked on foot out of the city to rural areas. The security situation worsened, with some looters fighting with rocks and clubs for rice, clothing and other goods scavenged from debris. In places the embryonic aid machine did not even try to organise distribution. Aid workers tossed out food packets to crowds and US helicopters took off as soon as they offloaded supplies, prompting scrambles in which the fittest and strongest prevailed. "They are not identifying the people who need the water. The sick and the old have no chance," Estime Pierre Deny, -hoping to fill a plastic container with water amid a scrum of people, told Reuters. Frustration over aid bottlenecks among donors became tinged by national rivalry as it became clear the US was taking ownership of the crisis. A vanguard of more than 1,000 US troops was on the ground and 12,000 were expected in the region by Monday, including marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson which anchored offshore as a "floating airport". The Haitian government,

paralysed by the destruction of the presidential palace and ministries, signed a memorandum of understanding formally transferring control of Toussaint L'Ouverture airport to the US. Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, flew in on Saturday and met Préval near the airport. "We will be here today, tomorrow and for the time ahead," she said. The UN mission, which had a 9,000-strong peacekeeping force in Haiti before the quake, seemed too stunned by its own losses to take control. Its dead include its Tunisian head, Hedi Annabi, his Brazilian deputy, Luiz Carlos da Costa, and the acting police commissioner, Doug Coates, a Canadian. Flights seeking permission to land continuously circle the airport, which is small, damaged and with a single runway, rankling several governments and aid agencies. "There are 200 flights going in and out every day, which is an incredible amount for a country like Haiti," Jarry Emmanuel, air logistics officer for the UN's World Food Programme, told the New York Times. "But most of those flights are for the United States military. Their priorities are to secure the country. Ours are to feed. We have got to get those priorities in sync." France, which as the former

-colonial power expects a prominent role, -protested when an emergency field hospital was turned back. The foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, said the airport was not for the international community but "an annexe of Washington", according to France's ambassador to Haiti, Didier Le Bret. Brazil, which saw its leadership of the UN peacekeeping mission as a calling card of its burgeoning influence, was also indignant when three flights were not allowed to land. The foreign ministry reportedly asked Clinton to grant Brazil priority over chartered flights. Nelson Jobim, the defence minister, said Brazil would not relinquish command duties and suggested it, not Washington, would continue to lead UN forces. Analysts said it was vital command issues be resolved. The Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières complained about flights with medical staff and equipment which were redirected to the neighbouring Dominican Republic. "We are all going crazy," said Nan Buzard, of the American Red Cross. The Obama administration has enlisted former presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton to spearhead relief efforts. Pankhurst, who is married with a young family, said he and Nawaz are no longer "in touch". Pankhurst, who remains a member of HT and preaches at Friday prayers, insists he is opposed to terrorist violence. He recently spoke about Abdulmutallab, saying he had

not been radicalised in London. "What [my accusers] forgot to say was that I spent 10 minutes stressing that any action that targets innocents is prohibited and that there's no justification for it in Islam. Pankhurst also refuted claims that he helped "groom" another ex-student, Omar Sharif, who blew himself up in Tel Aviv in 2003. "This guy must have been on the course at the same time as me at King's -College in 1996. I was president of the Islamic Society," Pankhurst said. "Does that mean I was responsible for what he did seven years later? It's neocon nonsense. It's crime by association." Pankhurst is taking legal advice over "this false allegation", he says. Such slurs, he said, are a "form of Mc-Carthyism directed against Muslims who speak out" against UK foreign policy. "Do they want Muslims to be engaged in professional fields or would they prefer us to be on benefits? The innuendo, blacklisting and McCarthyite witch-hunts are very counter-

An invitation to Pankhurst to participate in a debate entitled "Shariah law – compatible in the modern world?" at Queen Mary, University of London, was withdrawn before Christmas because of his HT membership. Pankhurst has received supportive emails from LSE students, and the school is standing by him: "No concerns about his conduct have been raised and we are not aware that he is a member of any proscribed organisation or has broken any laws or LSE regulations," it said in a statement. Cruise ships still find a Haitian berth By Robert Booth (World news and comment from the Guardian | guardian.co.uk) Submitted at 1/17/2010 1:53:47 PM

Sixty miles from Haiti's devastated earthquake zone, luxury liners dock at private beaches where passengers enjoy jet ski rides, parasailing and rum cocktails delivered to their hammocks. The 4,370-berth Independence of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean International, disembarked at the heavily guarded resort of Labadee on the north coast on Friday; a second cruise ship, the 3,100-passenger Navigator of the Seas is due to dock. The Florida cruise company leases a picturesque wooded peninsula and its five pristine beaches from the government for passengers to "cut loose" with watersports, barbecues, and shopping for trinkets at a craft market before returning on board before dusk. Safety is guaranteed by armed guards at the gate. The decision to go ahead with the visit has divided passengers. The ships carry some food aid, and the cruise line has pledged to

donate all proceeds from the visit to help stricken Haitians. But many passengers will stay aboard when they dock; one said he was "sickened". "I just can't see myself sunning on the beach, playing in the water, eating a barbecue, and enjoying a cocktail while [in Port -au-Prince] there are tens of thousands of dead people being piled up on the streets, with the survivors stunned and looking for food and water," one passenger wrote on the Cruise Critic internet forum. "It was hard enough to sit and eat a picnic lunch at Labadee before the quake, knowing how many Haitians were starving," said another. "I can't imagine having to choke down a burger there now.'' Some booked on ships scheduled to stop at Labadee are afraid that desperate people might breach the resort's 12ft high fences to get food and drink, but others seemed determined to enjoy their holiday."I'll be there on Tuesday and I plan on enjoying my zip line excursion as well as the time on the beach," said one. The company said the question

of whether to "deliver a vacation experience so close to the epicentre of an earthquake" had been subject to considerable internal debate before it decided to include Haiti in its itineraries for the coming weeks. "In the end, Labadee is critical to Haiti's recovery; hundreds of people rely on Labadee for their livelihood," said John Weis, vice -president. "In our conversations with the UN special envoy of the government of Haiti, Leslie Voltaire, he notes that Haiti will benefit from the revenues that are generated from each call … "We also have tremendous opportunities to use our ships as transport vessels for relief supplies and personnel to Haiti. Simply put, we cannot abandon Haiti now that they need us most." "Friday's call in Labadee went well," said Royal Caribbean. "Everything was open, as usual. The guests were very happy to hear that 100% of the proceeds from the call at Labadee would be donated to the relief effort." Forty pallets of rice, beans, powdered milk, water, and canned foods were delivered on Friday, and a further 80 are due

and 16 on two subsequent ships. When supplies arrive in Labadee, they are distributed by Food for the Poor, a longtime partner of Royal Caribbean in Haiti. Royal Caribbean has also pledged $1m to the relief effort and will spend part of that helping 200 Haitian crew members. The company recently spent $55m updating Labadee. It employs 230 Haitians and the firm estimates 300 more benefit from the market. The development has been regarded as a beacon of private investment in Haiti; Bill Clinton visited in October. Some Haitians have decried the leasing of the peninsula as effective privatisation of part of the republic's coastline. • Haiti • Natural disasters and extreme weather • Cruises Robert Booth guardian.co.uk© Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions| More Feeds

Retribution swift and brutal for Haiti's looters By Ed Pilkington (World news and comment from the Guardian | guardian.co.uk) Submitted at 1/17/2010 1:09:24 PM

Sixteen hours after he was thrown onto a Port-au-Prince rubbish dump and set alight, the body of the lynched thief was still smouldering – a macabre glimpse of the sporadic violence that is flaring up in this desperate city. With water, food and shelter in RETRIBUTION page 6

short supply for hundreds of thousands of earthquake survivors, localised flashpoints of looting and vigilante action to punish the perpetrators have arisen across the city. Haitian police were also reported to have shot dead at least one looter. Incongruously, the thief's last resting place lay between two institutions of peace and culture. On one side of the street in which he lay was a church, on the other an art gallery, the Musart Beau Decor. The body had been burned to a cinder but you could see the remnants of a tyre that had been lain on or around him as part of the living funeral pyre of rubbish that had been created for him by the lynch mob. The thief — whose identity will probably never be known other than the description offered by locals of "le voleur" — made the fatal error of trying to steal fruit juice from a nearby street vendor in Petionville, a neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince where there is a

relatively active police presence. By some accounts, the man pulled out a gun and shot the vendor in the head as he was making the robbery. Police were close at hand — their headquarters are just a few blocks away — and the thief was apprehended. What happened next is unclear. But the end result is certain: he was frogmarched by about 12 men, beaten, thrown on the street, covered with a pyre of rubbish, and burned. Antoine Miguel, a resident who was among a group assembled around the smouldering corpse, said that it was suspected the thief was one of 3,000 inmates who broke out of the National Penitentiary in the city after the earthquake unexpectedly granted them freedom. The quake released a few prisoners, who in turn overpowered the guards and opened all the cells, pouring on to the streets several of the most dangerous gang leaders who had previously terrorised parts of the city.

Reuters reporters gained access to the inside of the prison where they found that on their way out the inmates had burned most of the prison records, making the job of tracking them down and bringing them back to jail all the more difficult. The prison breakout has spread fear, particularly in Cite Soleil, a poor neighbourhood with a notorious history of gang violence that had begun to become more peaceful under the interventions of Haitian president Rene Prevail. Now Cite Soleil is braced for a return of the gangs. "They got out of prison and now they're going around trying to rob people," said Cite Soleil resident Elgin St Louis, 34, told Reuters. "Last night they spent the whole night shooting," she added. "We dread their return," said another. So far, warnings that Port-auPrince would descend into anarchy have not materialised. Lawlessness has been localised and confined largely to the night.

But the few incidents have been brutal. In the Delmar neighbourhood, two suspected looters were tied together and beaten before being dragged through the streets. As for the thief of Petionville, he will not be much mourned. "This isn't good, this isn't good," said Miguel, "But if the people don't do something about these criminals running amok, who will?" Filed under: Law, Competitive strategy, Johnson and Johnson (JNJ), Teva Pharm Indus ADR (TEVA) The U.S. Justice Department has charged giant pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson ( JNJ) with paying tens of millions of dollars in kickbacks to Omnicare Inc. ( OCR) to boost sales of its drugs to nursinghome patients, as reported by the Wall Street Journal(subscription required). Prosecutors allege that Omnicare's annual purchases of Johnson & Johnson medicines nearly tripled under this scheme to more than $280 million. According to prosecutors, the alleged kickbacks occurred between 1999 and 2004 and included payments for physician prescriber data that was never furnished. Johnson & Johnson

also paid quarterly rebates based on Omnicare's success in switching patients from competitors' drugs in what both companies called an "intervention program." iPhones Might Get Automatic Location-Aware Ads By Kit Eaton (Fast Company) Submitted at 1/16/2010 3:09:45 PM

Some attention has been lavished on a recent Apple patent that involves using custom icons on the iPhone's homescreen-darn useful for contacts management. But inside the patent is something far more intriguing: adverts that know where you are. Most commenters on the new patent are concentrating on the way it will relate to contact management on the iPhone-essentially it'll revolutionize the way it's currently done by letting you drop contacts onto the iPhone's home screens, complete with a photo icon. It's one of those obvious tricks that adds massive utility and Android OS already has something a little like it. Apple's patent actually suggests that the icons would be pretty powerful--with corner alert flags that'll let you know if

the contact has SMSed you, phoned you, or perhaps emailed you. But wait for it: The big secret in the patent is for a far more dynamic adaptation to how the iPhone's home screen works, using a similar sort of contact app/icon mechanism. Apple's idea is to allow new app icons to pop up on screen under the control of a nearby system or device. Essentially the iPhone would broadcast a Wi-fi or Bluetooth signal that it was capable of receiving an incoming app, and the download and installation would happen automatically. According to the patent details the icon needn't even be a permanent thing--it could be temporary, and it could be location-sensitive. In other words, Apple's possibly planning to build location-aware advertising powers right into the iPhone's OS. You'd pop into a coffee shop, your iPhone and the

store's PC would handshake, and bingo: Up pops a new icon on the screen, with the store's contact details or perhaps advertising the day's special offer. The system would also be able to do the same sort of dynamic app installation based

on GPS--imagine you're strolling through London's Trafalgar Square, and you get a pop-up icon (downloaded via 3G) inviting you into the nearby National Portrait Museum, perhaps with a tempting discount voucher for the museum's tea

shop. These apps could even remain installed once you leave the area--acting as a gentle advertising prompt. Both these ideas are simple, yet powerful. You know what? Both are actually relatively easy for Apple to code in to the iPhone's OS, particularly now Apple's bought up mobile Web ad specialist Quattro Wireless. I wonder if that's one of the reasons why Apple seems to have slowed down in releasing developer-test versions of the next OS update. And there's another thing to ponder on: This system could just as easily work on the Apple Tablet--where a pop-up, full-screen, full-color location aware advert would certainly grab more user attention. Early Windows Mobile 7 build gets handled, incompatible with previous WinMo apps? By Ross Miller (Engadget) Submitted at 1/17/2010 3:18:00 AM

In case you weren't aware, Mobile-review's Eldar Murtazin is somewhat of a living legend around these parts. The Russianborne phone guru manages to get his hands on an ample number of then-unreleased devices and juicy scoops -- but he's also been known to get things dead wrong from time, so keep that in mind. This time he might've just outdone himself with some apparent hands-on time with Windows Mobile 7. Here's what he's saying via Twitter: the OS has been built on scratch, and none of the old WinMo 6.x apps worked. There's "a lot of horizontal movements, a lot of

additional info by clicks... for WM users it will be a great step ahead. For market it's a copycat of Android 3.1/3.2 [sic] or iPhone." No direct comparison to Zune HD, except to say that it's a simpler UI than what he was

seeing here, and also no clue on the kernel underneath. Still, the lack of legacy compatibility is either a huge bummer to the fan base, or if not that then Microsoft is preparing for a twoplatform WinMo world. Then

FiOS Mobile app comes to Android By Ben Drawbaugh (Engadget) Submitted at 1/17/2010 12:05:00 PM

Every decent DVR today supports remote scheduling via the web -- well except Windows 7 Media Center-- and Verizon's FiOS TV DVR is no different. But of course web apps don't compare to real apps like this new one for Android users. The new FiOS Mobile app features a guide for remote scheduling as well as VOD browsing so you can mark what you want to

Paid New York Times Content Plan Could Coincide with Apple Tablet Announcement [Newspapers] By Jack Loftus (Gizmodo) Submitted at 1/17/2010 11:50:00 AM

ASUS DR-570 e-reader to sport 6-inch OLED color screen, 122 hours of battery life By Paul Miller (Engadget) Submitted at 1/17/2010 1:54:00 PM

Well, isn't this a doozy. ASUS was a bit of a no-show in the ereader arena at CES, but has dropped some knowledge on the Times Online's InGear: it's building a 6-inch color OLED ereader, which flies in the face of previous rumors about an ASUS e-reader entry. The device, currently dubbed the DR-570 and pictured to the left, will play back Flash video, includes WiFi and 3G, and supposedly can last for 122 hours on one charge under "real world conditions." It's supposed to be released by the end of the year, and while from anybody else we'd assume this would cost an arm and a leg, the ASUS brand gives us some hope that we might actually be able to afford one when it hits. 18 Online Productivity Tools for Your Business By Barb Dybwad (Mashable!) Submitted at 1/17/2010 11:09:25 AM

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Small business owners may have more of a need than most to be able to access their chosen suite of productivity tools from more than one computer or platform. As a business or startup owner you may have occasion to bring your work home with you, or require frequent access to your to-do lists, notes and documents on the go. Choosing primarily online tools for your productivity workflow is a great way to address the issue of source agnostic accessibility. It’s also a convenient method to ensure you have a backup of your important day-to-day items and files in case a particular computer or device fails. One other not insignificant factor in selecting cloud-based tools to keep you and your business on track is cost: the online equivalents of once desktop-bound applications are often much cheaper in both raw cost and maintenance cost, as tool upgrades usually happen behind the scenes and don’t require an in-house IT staff to keep up and running. With the tools on this list, you

should be able to check in on your current workflow stack regardless of which machine you happen to be in front of, what operating system it uses, and what browser it’s running. Plus, if you have a smartphone as your trusty mobile companion, chances are you’ll be able to access your tools from there as well. Check out our previous guide to mobile productivity tools as a logical companion to this piece, and consider your phone platform and setup and how well it may integrate with particular tools as you build out your productivity arsenal. To-do Lists One of the favorite and oftenmentioned entrants in the to-do list category among productivity geeks is Remember the Milk. Featuring a robust reminder system via your choices of SMS, IM, or email, offline task management, integration with Google Calendar, and tight integration with several mobile platforms, Remember the Milk also has a clean and easy to use interface that Gettings Things Done aficionados swoon over. It also integrates with a number of other web services and third parties including Netvibes and iGoogle, Google maps, Twitter, Jott, the Mac and Linux desktop, and more. Far from being the only game in town, however, Remember the Milk has a number of online todo list peers worth checking out. Toodledo is a popular newcomer

with a full-featured slate of ways to enter, organize, and sort your tasks. Featuring a tiered freemium service model, Toodledo also has great mobile integration and offers a handy comparison chart on how it stacks up against other popular web-based to-do apps. If your to-do tastes run on the simpler and less cluttered side of the spectrum, there are several options worth looking into. TeuxDeux bills itself as a “simple, designy, free, browserbased to-do app” and embraces a minimalist interface accordingly. Task.fm is another interesting option in the minimalist category, with a source agnostic and natural language approach to getting items in and back out to you at just the right time with various reminder options. Ta-da List is a product from 37signals, makers of other popular web project management tools like Basecamp, Backpack, and Campfire — so if your small business already uses any 37signals tools you might find Ta-da List an excellent companion. Last but not least, the former Gmail Labs project Gmail Tasks is a simple to-do

list that integrates right into Gmail, making it a nice and lightweight option for businesses that already use Gmail and/or Google Apps for email. NoteTaking It’s difficult to write about cloud -based note-taking without mentioning Evernote. You can get notes into Evernote in any number of ways, from email to browser bookmarklet to desktop or mobile app, as well as via the web-based interface and even via Twitter. You can also leave voice notes, plus have Evernote use optical character recognition to scan photos of business cards and other documents, converting printed material into searchable text. On the organizational side, you can create multiple notebooks, tag individual entries, and set up saved searches for frequently accessed collections. Evernote’s freemium business model offers a generous amount of monthly usage in the free version and a reasonable $5 per month/$45 per year premium version with a higher usage limit and other pro features. Two other good choices for cloud-based notebooks that integrate well with their fullfeatured office suite counterparts are Google Notebook and Zoho Notebook. Both feature a typical web-based WYSIWYG notetaking environment as well as sharing and collaboration options for your notes and documents that need to be socialized. If you already routinely use either

Google Docs or Zoho Office in your business to manage documents, it might make sense to adopt their notebook counterparts for your outboard brain workflow needs. A couple of online note-taking options based on wiki technology include Springnote and Luminotes. They feature easy methods of linking pages and concepts together, and if you’re already familiar with the wiki concept and looking for a lightweight notebook that uses similar concepts you may want to check out these two. Springnote also promotes collaboration via notebook sharing as well. Information and News Gathering When it comes to staying on top of developments in your industry and trends that might affect your business, it can seem daunting to make sure what’s most important crosses your desk and your eyeballs. Several related categories of online tools can help sift through the noise and help you pull out the signal, plus safely store information and concepts you may need to retrieve later. In an earlier article we covered how to choose a news reader for keeping tabs on your industry, and by far the most popular webbased offering in that category is Google Reader. The BearExtender n3 gives you more Wi-Fi range at a low cost By David Winograd (The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)) Submitted at 1/16/2010 3:00:00 PM

Filed under: Hardware, Peripherals, Airport, Reviews It's not often that I've come across a product that works perfectly, does exactly what it says it will, costs a lot less than its closest competitor and provides a real and salient difference in my computing experience. The US$44.97 BearExtender n3 does just that. Roland Saekow, a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, realized that the 'Airbears' campus network wasn't complete enough to allow students to connect from all parts of the large campus, so he developed an external Wi-Fi receiver that can boost the range of a standard Airport-equipped laptop by up to 200%. He partnered with Jason Opdyke of Rokland Technologies and brought his extender to market this past December. I was interested in taking a look, since my home network (comprised of a Time Capsule and several Airport Express units) still leaves a section of my house where I can't get a decent Wi-Fi signal, no matter what I try. I've been told that the only way to solve this is to run RJ-45 cable all around the outside of my house, and get a second router. Doing this would be ugly, inconvenient and expensive, so

when I heard about the BearExtender n3, I had to find out if this would do the trick and vanquish my Wi-Fi-challenged rooms problem. Within ten minutes of opening the box I found that it did solve my issues, and in further testing I became even more impressed. The box contains the BearExtender n3 along with two USB cables, one short and one long, and the software. The installer comes cleverly stored

on a USB flash drive, so you MacBook Air users aren't left out if you lack a DVD reader. You can place the BearExtender n3 on the side of your computer or attach it with a convenient clip to a laptop screen. It does have some heft to it, but clipping it to the back, as shown in the picture, doesn't obscure any of the screen. After plugging it into a USB port, installing the Railink driver software, rebooting and

configuring a few settings, I tried it all around my house. In my highly insulated basement that needed four Airport Express units to get a signal from one side to the other, I was able to unplug two of them and connect just fine. Re-enabling the Airport card wouldn't even show me a network. The BEn3 overrides the Airport card in your computer and increases your signal strength from the reported 20 dBw (which translates to 100

millwatts) in an Airport card to 700 millwatts. It also features a 2dBi gain antenna, which, though large, bypasses interference created by the Airport card living in an aluminum case. The result is the best extender I have ever tried at the the best price ever. I'm sure there are others, but I found the closest competitor is the Quickertech Quicky which is rated at 500 millwatts and costs $US225. The BEn3 ups the ante by 200 millwatts and costs only $US44.97. The BEn3 is about five times cheaper while providing better range. Both units use the Railink chipset and require basically the same software. The downside, and I really don't consider this much of a downside, is that the BearExtender runs only on the 2.4GHz band; this doesn't give you the option of a 5Ghz 802.11n network. This probably won't be an issue for you if you're in a relatively interference -free area as far as Wi-Fi channels go (2.4GHz requires more space between channels for uncluttered networking); if you have lots of neighbors crowding the spectrum, though, the lack of a 5 GHz option might cause some issues. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, it won't work on a pure BEAREXTENDER page 20

like view of your Reader feeds over Google’s native interface, Firefox users should definitely give Feedly a try. But simply employing an RSS reader doesn’t always solve the problem of having too much incoming information to stay on top of, which doesn’t always come in at the most convenient time for you to absorb it. A couple of tools can help with the latter problem of specifically storing an article and helping you remember to read it later, perhaps when other duties and tasks have quieted down and you find yourself with some spare moments to catch up on the things you knew you should make time to read at some point. Both Instapaper and Read It Later allow you to create a stack of items set aside for later reading, with a simple and uncluttered interface allowing you to check off or archive items after you’ve gotten around to reading them. Both integrate with various other tools in your online arsenal, with browser bookmarklet entry and iPhone integration. Instapaper also integrates with Feedly so you can send items directly to it from

your feed reading experience, while Read It Later offers a Firefox extension that brings your “to read” stack closely into your browser. Instapaper also allows you to easily generate a printable version of your on deck items, or even download them in Kindle or ePub formats for reading on the go. For longer-term storage of important articles, social bookmarking tools come in handy for preventing your bookmarks from being “trapped” in a single browser on a single machine. One of the original pioneering web services, delicious.com, is still flourishing (and now owned by Yahoo). Using a browser bookmarklet you can send articles and web pages you want to refer back to later to your delicious account, plus a short personal note and topic tags. The net effect of collecting many users’ individual bookmarks also creates a valuable discovery engine that can turn you on to even more relevant material in your business’s industry or niche. Two other options worth checking out include Diigo, a relative newcomer that offers

integration with your delicious collection and allows you to highlight and annotate portions of pages, and Clipmarks, which focuses on saving and sharing just the parts of web pages you find most useful. Going Further The above are just a few of the productivity categories in which online tools can help your current workflow stack stay accessible from almost anywhere. Other web-based tools can help with mobile office needs from calendaring to document collaboration, filesharing to collaborative presentations, from start pages to contact management and more. Other tools, like Jott Assistant, are out there to help you tie those tools together and access them via other applications you use regularly. It’s helpful to keep a flexible and open attitude towards your workflow and the tools you use, and occasionally take stock of what’s working, what’s not working as well as it should, and areas where your productivity seems to suffer. If you’re willing to spend even a modest amount of time being periodically adventurous with new tools, you

could open workflow channels you weren’t even aware were blocked, and even infuse your day-to-day and your business with new ideas and new energy. TUAW Tip: Getting your fill with iTunes' autofill By Sang Tang (The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)) Submitted at 1/17/2010 1:30:00 PM

Filed under: How-tos, iTunes I'm the iTunes music pharmacist for my family's iPod and iPhone music libraries. In short, what this means is that, whether it's due to "getting sick of hearing the same thing over and over when I'm running" or wanting a new song or album on their iPod, they come to me when they want their music refilled. Which is fine and dandy. I'm more than happy to do this, and have my trusty ol' 17 inch iMac loaded with everyones' music on it (except mine, which is loaded on my MacBook Pro). From the 3rd generation iPod classic to the iPhone 3G S, and from The Arcade Fire to ZZ Top, there exists an eclectic iPod and music mix in my family. How I would sync music for each person varied on a case-by-case basis, and usually took shape in syncing specific folders, playlists, smart playlists, and genres. 5GHz 802.11n network since they both contain 802.11g radios. Additionally, Jason Opdyke told me in their testing they discovered that using a 5GHz network would have cut the range in half. The 2.4GHz band allows for backward compatibility with b and g devices as well as n, so regardless of what you have, you're covered. Even if your network is limping along just fine, the BEn3 will give you a better signal. In my testing I found that a device showing 57% signal strength using the Airport card became 100% using the BEn3. The further away devices are the lower the numbers get, but with some rare exceptions the BEn3 showed much higher signal strength than using the internal Airport card. The BEn3 also showed me more Airport Expresses, connecting to one or two more than were found by the

Airport card. Here's another benefit I found. I really don't understand why it happens (maybe some of you can enlighten me in the comments) but the Internet speed test found at Speedtest.net showed the BEn3 consistently coming up with quicker download and upload speeds; often by as much as a third. Another nice feature is that it can be used to extend your network with other nearby Wi-Fi users. There are some other minor downsides though. The thing is pretty big and I can see it being a hassle connecting and disconnecting it each time you move your laptop. No big deal if you're using a Mac Pro, Mac Mini or iMac. The software uses 32-bit drivers so it won't work under Snow Leopard with the following computers: • Xserve (Early 2008) • Xserve (Early 2009) • Mac Pro (Early 2008)

• Mac Pro (Early 2009) It is compatible with Mac OSX 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 and 32 bit 10.6 Snow Leopard. 64-bit drivers are in the works. I can see the BearExtender n3 solving a lot of Wi-Fi woes cheaply and well. The best recommendation I can give it is that, rather than send back the review unit, I bought it. The FBI Sucks at Photoshop [PIC] By Pete Cashmore (Mashable!) Submitted at 1/16/2010 10:38:42 PM

The FBI this week released a “digitally-altered” image showing what Osama Bin Laden possibly looks like now he’s older. While the FBI claims to have used “cutting edge” technology to create the image, a Spanish politician has noticed that the poster is a modified version of his campaign photo — he now finds his face in America’s most wanted list. While on the surface it’s an amusing misstep by intelligence agencies, Gaspar Llamazares, the former leader of Spain’s United Left coalition, calls the move “shameless”. His safety is at risk, he told the BBC, and he no longer feels able to travel to America now his likeness is on a wanted poster: “Bin Laden’s safety is not threatened by this but mine certainly is”, Llamazares said. \ Left, Bin Laden in 1998; middle, the FBI image; right, Gaspar Llamazares The FBI is quoted admitting to the error, saying that the artist found the photo on the web and didn’t know it was of a Spanish politician: When producing age-progressed photographs, forensic artists

typically select features from a database of stock reference photographs to create the new image…it appears that in this instance the forensic artist was unable to find suitable features among the reference photographs and obtained those features, in part, from a photograph he found on the internet. The forensic artist was not aware of the identity of the individual depicted in the photograph. The similarities between the photos were unintentional and inadvertent. We don’t think it matters that the man in question was a notable politician: using photos from an image search to create a most wanted poster is surely putting the subject at risk, is it not? AT&T lowering cost of unlimited voice and data for iPhone users By Steven Sande (The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW))

New York Times Website May Charge: Will You Pay? [POLL] By Pete Cashmore (Mashable!)

Submitted at 1/17/2010 3:30:00 PM

Filed under: Odds and ends, iPhone The battle of snarkiness between AT&T and Verizon is resulting in benefits for subscribers. Yesterday, AT&T announced a new unlimited voice and data plan for smartphone owners, including those who use the iPhone, that offers unlimited voice and data service for $99.99 per month. The change was the result of Verizon lowering the cost of its unlimited plans earlier in the day, and consumers are the beneficiaries of the battle of the cell phone titans. Prior to the announcement, iPhone users paid $100 monthly for unlimited voice, then tacked on another $30 a month for unlimited data. Starting on Monday, January 18th, 2010, a combined unlimited voice and data plan is available for $99.99. That's a savings of $30 per month. For a Family Talk plan

The New York Times is likely to announce a metered payment model for its website within weeks, according to a widely cited report from New York Magazine. If the report is correct, readers would be able to view a few pages before being prompted to subscribe. The motivation is clear: online ad revenues aren’t enough to replace plummeting revenues from the printed page. Opinion is divided on the matter: online readers are accustomed to free content, and the New York Times competes with all sorts of outlets (including blogs like this one). Erecting paywalls may drive readers toward these free outlets and sacrifice reach in exchange for maintaining revenue. Putting some content out of reach also threatens the newspaper’s “link revenue” – Google’s PageRank is a currency of sorts that drives attention and traffic, but bloggers cannot link to articles they can’t

read. Critics could also also cite the fact that Times’ first attempt at building a paywall – TimesSelect– was a failure. Yet if readers are ever to be sold on the payment model, which the WSJ claims is working in that instance, little time remains to change user behavior. Proponents might also argue that maintaining revenues is critical to keeping quality high. What do you think? Would you become a subscriber if the NY Times website began to charge? Re: Tim Blair's Latest Glover Goofiness (Little Green Footballs) Submitted at 1/17/2010 11:31:28 AM

Tim Blair is still outrageously outraged that Danny Glover said global warming caused the Haitian earthquake. (He didn’t.) Blair links to a Bill O’Reilly segment that blatantly misquotes what Glover did say:[Video] Here’s the misquote: There’s all this hell because of

global warming, there’s all this hell because of climate change … What Glover actually did say: You know, they’re all in peril because of global warming, they’re all in peril because of climate change and all this. But “all this hell” makes Glover look worse than “all in peril,” so of course Fox News runs with the false transcription.

Tim Blair, meanwhile, updates his post to take another predictable shot at me, because I linked to a story about Scott Ritter’s arrest in a sex sting with a comment about Ritter 180degree turnaround on Iraq: Be amazed as Johnson mentions someone else’s 180-degree turn. I changed my opinion on global warming, as I’ve written before, because I took the time and

As much as you may get chided for listening to your earbuds too loud, a new longterm study shows that the prevalence of hearing impairment has actually decreased over the past several decades. For every five years later a person was born in the 20th century, their chances of having hearing impairment drops by six to thirteen percent, for women and men, respectively. Part of the counterintuitive conclusions are said to be a result of less noise at work and better health; it appears noisy inear entertainment products may not be as damaging as we thought. Five Best Photo-Printing Sites [Hive Five] By Jason Fitzpatrick (Lifehacker) Submitted at 1/17/2010 9:00:00 AM

Digital cameras are fantastic for letting us experiment, take tons of photos, and search for the perfect shot. Digital picture frames and at-home prints are often poor substitutes for real photos. Get a great print at one of these five photo-printing sites. Photo by Shermeee. Once upon a time people took photos and dutifully carted their film down to the photo shop to get developed, waiting to see how the photos turned out. Now people immediately check whether or not the shot was good on the display of their digital camera, and more often than not stuff the photos onto their hard drives or upload them to their Flickr accounts, but never get around to actually printing them and preserving them in a physical form. If you've been meaning to get around to printing more photos and saving them from their fate of digital obscurity, the following five Lifehacker reader-selected sites can help you. For the sake of consistency among the pricing notes, each site's price will be listed as the current price (as of 1/17/2010) for one 4x6 and one 8x10, two of the most common U.S. photographic print sizes and good indicators of the over all pricing scheme at the site. Pricing is only one element of

photo printing, however, and we would strongly suggest reading our notes here and checking out the individual sites before selecting one over the other based on a few cent price difference. It's also worth noting that reviewing photo-printing services is very similar to reviewing, say, netbook computers. The end products are so similar to each other that the real test of whether or not you like one photo service over another photo service is to upload a couple photos and see if the little things—like the bulk uploader, the built-in editing tools, and the ordering interface—are features you are

US investors who are continuing to shun US equity markets in favour of bond investments or emerging market stocks may be in for disappointment, according to the chief investment officer at T Rowe Price. With interest rate rises looming – which could dent the value of

fixed income investments such as corporate bonds – and with emerging market stocks having gained so quickly in the past year, Brian Rogers, chairman and chief investment officer at T Rowe Price, said investors should “fight that tendency to follow the herd”. Add Some Rumble-Action to Your Mouse [DIY] By Jason Fitzpatrick (Lifehacker) Submitted at 1/17/2010 8:00:00 AM

If you like the vibration feedback found in gaming console controllers and want to add a little rumble-action to your mouse, all-things-DIY magazine Make offers a tutorial that may be right up your alley. The rumble mouse is an electronics project from Make Magazine Vol. 06, put together by Greg Lipscomb. In the video below, Kip Kay demonstrates the process of taking an old

cellphone, pager, or other small vibration motor and wiring into a basic $20 mouse. It's a pretty neat project, although it does have one shortcoming—there's no way for

the computer to send unique feedback like a game console does to a controller. You'll get vibration for your own gaming actions, but when things happen to you in the game (like getting

shot at instead of doing the shooting), you won't get impact rumbles or the like. Corporate media is the problem (Scripting News) Submitted at 1/17/2010 9:15:15 AM

I heard Jaron Lanier interviewed on the NPR show OnPoint this week. He was promoting his new book You Are Not A Gadget, which I haven't read, but I recognized the main theme as something I was getting ready to write about myself. So first, let me say it this way -- I agree with Lanier's concerns. And I think we should do something about it. The Internet is the most powerful communication medium ever, but we've chosen to give up some of that power to get it for free. It's still the most powerful medium, even with the power reduced, but (this is very important) eventually we'll use it up, and be stuck without the ability to communicate at all, if we don't change. And further, we won't know how we got there, because the record won't survive. I recognize the marketing in Lanier's message is designed to appeal to mainstream media, much the way Andrew Keen's is, but before the MSM people congratulate themselves too much, they're helping lead us down the blind alley, by constantly promoting the new kind of corporate media that's no better than the corporate media that employ them. When they tell us to find them on Twitter or Facebook, they're selling themselves and us out. Before going any further, let me

explain what I mean by "do something about it." 1. You should pay for your own hosting. 2. You should write your own biography, not delegate it to invisible masses on Wikipedia. 3. You should write other people's biographies, from your point of view. Or at least tell true stories about them, which can be assembled by others into alternate views. 4. Sign your name to all your writing. Use your real name, the one on your driver's license, tax returns, passport, draft card. 5. If you care about a subject, write a definitive piece on it that reflects your point of view,. Don't settle for a compromise, group-think sanitized version in the form of a Wikipedia page. 6. You should own your own domain, or set of domains, and pay the registration fees yourself. We need diversity of opinion, not a mass of slurry that's formed into corporate frankfurter meat. As good as Wikipedia is, and it's usually pretty good, it's taking us to the wrong place -- a place where dissenting views are given no voice. A place where facts are created and sustained that aren't factual. I've seen it happen myself, with events I know about personally. The Wikipedia record is incorrect, and can't be corrected. If you try making the correction (if you're allowed to by the ethical guidelines, that seem to prohibit people with first -hand knowledge from

They either won't care if you stay afloat, or worse, they will try to sink you. I'm not kidding. Keeping a website afloat these days, unlike the early days of the Internet, is not for the faint of heart or the technologically naive. If the Internet is going to achieve its potential, and these days the prospects for that look dim, we're going to have to create a service that doesn't exist. I described it in a piece I wrote last week: Jan 13: Static hosting should be cheap and easy. We could have a good discussion about this, but I don't know where. The industry conferences won't discuss your independence because they get their funding from companies that get the value from your dependence. Lanier is right, we probably have gone too far out on a limb to get back on track. Or perhaps some of us can figure this out, but our writing will be the only stuff that survives. It's time to have this discussion, maybe past time.

This morning, FX was in the house here at the Langham Huntington, with panels for Damages, Justified-- a show based on an Elmore Leonard character, starting Tim Olyphant -- and Louie. The last show stars Louis C.K. as himself, as it intersperses scripted vignettes about a newly-single dad standup comic in New York with bits of new stand-up material. I got a chance to speak to Louis after his panel, and we had a great talk, highlighted by the list of words he could and couldn't say on FX; it'll probably be the dirtiest thing we've ever published, but it'll be worth it. During his panel, however, one of the last questions was about the whole Conan/Leno debate. You'd think Louis would have sided with Conan, who gave him his first shot as a comedy writer. He did, but he had an interesting take on the matter: Why would

New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards pleaded no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct this week, was fined $1,000, and given a suspended 180-day jail sentence. But his punishment isn't over yet. Edwards' case will be reviewed under the NFL's personal conduct policy and is expected to result in discipline, though not during this postseason, a league source said. AFC East blog

ESPN.com's Tim Graham writes about all things AFC East in his division blog. • Blog network: NFL Nation Edwards initially pleaded not guilty in November to misdemeanor assault after he was accused of punching a friend of NBA star LeBron James on Oct. 5 outside a downtown nightclub. The former Browns receiver was traded to the Jets two days later. Even if the Jets win Sunday and advance to the AFC Championship Game, the league will not punish Edwards this season. But Edwards is facing some type of punishment for the

2010 season, and a suspension will be considered. The NFL soon will review Edwards' case and make its decision based on the facts of this case and the receiver's behavioral history. Fortunately for Edwards, he does not have any prior incidents on his records. Adam Schefter is ESPN's NFL Insider. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. Gaines Adams, Chicago Bears Defensive End, Dies at 26 By Michael David Smith (Fanhouse Main) Submitted at 1/17/2010 3:21:00 AM

Filed under: Chicago Bears Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning in South Carolina, county coroner James T. Coursey said. Adams was 26. Adams was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, where was pronounced dead, the Greenville News first reported. A

preliminary autopsy Sunday revealed Adams had an enlarged heart and likely died of cardiac arrest, ESPN reported.

According to NFL Network, Coursey explained that "health issues" on Sunday morning prompted Adams' girlfriend to call an ambulance. Adams arrived at the hospital just after 8 a.m. ET and was pronounced dead less than a half hour later. Coursey said Adams had no history of health problems. "We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines' passing," the Bears franchise said in a statement. "Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

on Jan. 7. He hasn't been able to strengthen his case since then, since he'd already been granted a leave from the Rockets while they try to find a trade. He's played sparingly in only six games this season since coming back from knee surgery, and Allen thinks commissioner David Stern should consider a rule mandating a player appear in a minimum number of games to be eligible. "Tracy, if he played, I'm sure he'd play well enough to be an All-Star player because he's done that his career," Allen said. "But again, that's taking away from another player in the Western Conference that's having a great year, that's been playing, that deserves to be in there." Iverson had a better shot of holding on to his No. 2 spot in the East, leading Vince Carter by more than 185,000 votes. He's listed with West players on the paper ballot after starting the season in Memphis, but his votes count in the East since he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. He hasn't played at an All-Star level this season, but fans may be looking at what he's done in the past. "A lot of times voting reflects career achievement as well as

yearly achievements," McIntyre said. Allen also mentioned getting the coaches, who pick the reserves, involved in selecting the starters. Even that may not guarantee the most deserving 10 players, since coaches could have their own opinions about who belongs in the All-Star game. During Shaquille O'Neal's unproductive, injury-plagued final season in Miami in 2008, former Knicks coach Isiah Thomas said he planned to vote him as a reserve anyway, recalling when he played that respected older players such as Julius Erving still made All-Star teams late in their careers. That's why Charlotte coach Larry Brown supports Iverson's election. "I've seen Willie Mays and those older guys start based on what they've done in their career in baseball and we've had that happen in basketball for years, guys that have made a contribution," Brown said. "That's why the fans are involved and I think it's kind of neat that they are involved. They support the league, they vote for their favorite players. I always look at a guy's body of work." That's fine for some, but it means worthy players are going

to be left out. Unlike baseball, which mandates every team be represented in its All-Star Game, the NBA has only 12 spots per conference to fill. "You figure if there's 24 players that get named to the All-Star team, there's always 30 that deserve it, and you figure that's six that should be on the All-Star team," Allen said. Toronto forward Chris Bosh had little chance of starting the game in his hometown of Dallas, sitting well behind LeBron James and Kevin Garnett despite a terrific first half. Yet he doesn't want to change the voting format. "It's all about the fans," he said. "It's all about who they want to see because they generate the dollars, they're going to watch the game, so they're going to vote for their favorite players and that's probably how it should be." Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams dies at age 26 By ESPN.com news services (ESPN.com) Submitted at 1/17/2010 2:02:37 PM

What Caused Gaines Adams' Death? What Caused Gaines Adams' Death? VIDEO PLAYLIST • What Caused Gaines Adams' Death? What Caused Gaines Adams' Death? • Bears' Gaines Adams Dies At Age 26 Bears' Gaines Adams Dies At Age 26 Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning of cardiac arrest, the Greenwood, S.C., county coroner said. He was 26. Greenwood County coroner James T. Coursey told ESPN that Adams, a Greenwood native, was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9 a.m Adams, who had just completed his third season in the NFL, went into cardiac arrest at his family's home early Sunday morning, said Marcia Kelley-Clark, chief deputy coroner for Greenwood County. Adams

The autopsy showed Adams had an enlarged heart, a condition Kelley-Clark said can often lead to a heart attack. But Adams' relatives didn't know about it. "Nobody was aware of any kind of medical condition," KelleyClark said. Toxicology tests are being run by the State Law Enforcement Division, though drug use was not suspected as a factor in Adams' death. However, those results probably will not be available for at least two months, Kelley-Clark said. "I remember him at the 2007 Draft as a fine young man," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said of Adams on Sunday. "Our condolences to Gaines' family, his teammates on the Bears and Buccaneers, and their organizations on their loss." In 47 games over three seasons with the Bears and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Adams had 67 tackles, including 13.5 sacks. "We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines' passing," the Bears said in a statement. "Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time." Adams was selected fourth overall in the 2007 NFL draft by

Tampa Bay, but was unable to live up to expectations that he would revive the Buccaneers' once-feared pass rush. He fell short of the benchmark set by Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris, who said at the start of training camp that Adams would be considered a "bust" if he didn't reach double digits in sacks. He was traded to Chicago in October for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft. Adams said during training camp that he welcomed the challenge posed by Morris, who also called out the third-year pro after Adams began the season with lackluster performances in the first three games. "In football you need that. Players tend to get in their own element and do things that they want to do. They need to be called out sometimes. He's the coach. Whatever he says, goes," Adams said in early August. On Sunday, Morris called Adams "a true team player and a positive influence to everyone he met. My prayers go out to his family." The Bucs' ownership and front office and Adams' former Tampa teammates were saddened by his

death. "Gaines was a quiet, humble kid and is far too young to be gone," cornerback Ronde Barber said. "He had so much potential that had yet to be achieved and I am very sad that the full extent of his life won't be realized." "I still don't want to believe that it is true," added defensive tackle Chris Hovan. "I am deeply saddened that we have lost someone who I considered a friend for life. When he came to Tampa, I took Gaines under my wing; I considered him my little brother and that's how I will always remember him. This is all so unreal and it hasn't really hit me yet." "Today is a tragic day," said ESPN analyst Jon Gruden, who drafted Adams as the Buccaneers coach. "Gaines was an impressive kid with such a tremendous future in front of him. He was a great teammate and well-liked by our coaches and all those who had the opportunity to be around him in Tampa." Adams played brief stints on defense after his trade to the Bears, making five tackles. Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher

told the Chicago Tribune that Adams' death was "crazy." "I didn't know him that well because he came in during the middle of the season," Urlacher said. "But I did know him. I still saw him every day when I went into work. It's just weird. "I had a teammate die when I was in college. You just don't know how to handle it. It's just sad, man. It's a bad deal." Adams was well-known among Clemson fans for breaking up Wake Forest's field goal try and returning it for a touchdown in 2006 to defeat the Demon Deacons. Tommy Bowden, who was Adams' head coach at Clemson, said he couldn't believe the young player was gone. "I just couldn't believe it was Gaines," Bowden said. "I will always remember the smile he had on his face and I will always remember his patience." Information from The Associated Press was used in this story. NFL Playoffs Diary: Jets at Chargers (WSJ.com: The Daily Fix) Submitted at 1/17/2010 11:00:40 AM

Getty Images Philip Rivers (17) and the Chargers have won 11 straight games. The Journal provides minute-byminute analysis of today’s AFC divisional-round playoff game as the San Diego Chargers host the New York Jets at Qualcomm Stadium. Guest blogger Steve Kornacki offers commentary on the game and the CBS telecast. Feel free to email Steve with questions or comments during the game. 2:04 pm | Pregame | by Steve Kornacki By late Sunday morning, Vegas was listing the Chargers â- who won 11 straight games to finish the regular season at 13-3 -â as eight-point favorites over the Jets, the largest spread for any of this weekendâs divisional round matchups. But San Diego fans are probably still feeling apprehensive, and for good reason. The last time the Chargers stormed into the playoffs with the momentum they now have, they immediately suffered an agonizing defeat. That was in 2006, when Phillip Rivers, in his

first year as the teamâs starter, led San Diego on a 10-game winning streak to end the regular season, securing the top seed in the AFC playoffs. But against the Patriots in the divisional round, they melted down in the fourth quarter, squandering a late 21-13 lead and losing by a field goal. Marty Schottenheimer was shown the door shortly thereafter. The setup is similar today. The Chargers are the hottest team in the league. Theyâre rested. Theyâre playing at home. And an

AFC East team is coming to town. Then again, thereâs a reason the spread is eight points. The Jets were only 9-7 in the regular season -â and they didnât exactly have to fight their way into the playoffs, with the Colts and Bengals politely rolling over for them. And while rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez was efficient last week, he really didnât have to do much. Against the explosive Chargers, though, New York will probably have to score some points. Which means

Sanchez will have to throw the ball. Which could mean big trouble for the Jets. As they have all season, the Jets will have to rely on their defense. But against Rivers and San Diegoâs balanced and deep offensive attack, the challenge will be severe. Itâs hard to imagine the Jets offense scoring more than 17 points in this game, so the margin of error for the defense will be small. 4:41 pm | Pregame | by Steve Kornacki We're just about to get started.

So far, this has been one of the most dreadful NFL playoff weekends in memory -- three suspenseless routs by home-team favorites. The bettors in Vegas are clearly spooked: The line has spiked to 9 (for the Chargers) in the last few hours. Which is probably the perfect setup for a Jets win. Also: an outdoor football game! How novel.

The last beta phase for Zipper Interactive's pseudo-MMOFPS MAG has ended, and the developer has compiled some facts and figures you may find fascinating. According to a recent post on the studio's blog, over one million people downloaded the MAG beta client worldwide. Of that group, around 619,000 people gained at least one point of experience, 52,846 became eligible for Squad Leader status, 10,249 became Platoon Leaders, 3,181 hit the rank of Officer in Charge, and only 143 players reached the level 60 experience cap.

Zipper also broke down the populations of the three factions: Raven and Valor each netted about 38 percent of the game's player base, while SVER only picked up 24 percent. However, despite its smaller size, SVER ended up winning out overall for the Sabotage gametype. Well, now we know which private military contractor is the plucky underdog. Haiti quake aid effort still slow (BBC News | Americas | World Edition) Submitted at 1/17/2010 10:49:33 AM

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. An Israeli team freed a man from rubble after an eight hour effort The delivery of aid to victims of Haiti's earthquake is still being slowed by bottlenecks, aid workers say. UN and Oxfam staff are finally bringing food and water to some parts of the capital Port-auPrince, but the airport remains clogged with loaded planes. Many survivors of Tuesday's quake have become desperate as they wait for aid, and many are trying to leave the city. UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon, who has arrived in Haiti, said it was the worst humanitarian crisis for decades. Mr Ban visited the ruins of the UN mission, where several staff including Special Representative Hedi Annabi were killed, and meet President Rene Preval. On Sunday afternoon, a Danish UN worker was pulled alive from the rubble of the building. Four other people were rescued during the day. The UN has launched an appeal for $562m (ÂŁ346m) intended to help three million people for six months, while some two million people are thought to need emergency relief. In this highly Christian country, there are still songs of praise

"The Haitian airport now is overwhelmed," said UN Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, Edmond Mulet. The port is badly damaged, and many roads still blocked by corpses and debris. David Wimhurst, a spokesman for the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti, said aid was being delivered as quickly as possible. "Aid is going out but it's simply impossible in 24 hours to bring in enough aid to instantly feed all these people, many of whom are in places that are inaccessible," he said. waited a week before airing her first campaign ad, and when she did, the spot focused on her prosecutorial career and work against child sex predators. Coakley did have one advertising first: She was the first candidate to air a negative spot, released a half-hour after her final debate with Brown on Jan. 11. Brown now has the chance to become a pivotal Republican Party player, the 41st Senate vote against the health care bill, the focus of Kennedy's life work. You'd never know it from Brown's ads, Web site or campaigning. He rarely mentions his party affiliation, instead saying he is "independent-minded." It's a nod to the voting reality in Massachusetts. While the state has a solid Democratic tradition, 51 percent of its voters are unenrolled in either major party. Only 37 percent are registered Democrats, while just 12 percent are Republicans. So-called Kennedy liberal Democrats remain in the cities, but moderates now populate the suburbs. They favor a balanced approach to government, and they helped elect Republican governors for a 16-year run before Democrats regained the office in 2006. Massachusetts' Democratic leader, Gov. Deval Patrick, is sagging after an Obama-like 2006 campaign full of airy talk

about "together we can" collided with a sagging economy, a sales tax increase and none of his promised property tax reductions. A Suffolk University poll last week that showed Brown statistically tied with Coakley also showed Patrick with a 56 percent disapproval rating. Obama's was only slightly better at 43 percent. "It's a very anxiety-ridden climate in the country," said John Sasso, a Democratic political strategist who advised former Gov. Michael S. Dukakis. "And the party that's in, the Democratic Party, bears the brunt of that." Brown is practiced in running against the tide, both personally and professionally. The 50-year-old is both a triathlete and a Republican by choice, and it's hard to know which is more difficult in a state where the GOP holds just 15 percent of the legislative seats. Brown is one of five Republicans in the state Senate. Last fall, he ran against a perennial candidate in the GOP primary, but he and his campaign team knew their true challenge — and opportunity — lay in the five-week general election campaign. His first event was symbolically charged: He signed a no-new-taxes pledge and challenged Coakley to do the same. Coakley dismissed it as "a

campaign gimmick." An early poll by the National Republican Senatorial Committee showed Brown trailing by just 13 points. The committee kept the results private to avoid awakening slumbering Democrats. Last week when polls for the first time showed Brown on the cusp of victory, a key Democratic player, Massachusetts Secretary of State William F. Galvin, said confirming the election results could take 10 days, maybe 15, enough time for Democrats in Washington to push a health care compromise through the Senate. That irked Massachusetts voters even more. "It's not playing by the rules; it's changing the rules of the game," said Scott McGrath of Winthrop, who held a sign at a Brown rally on Friday. "It's worse than dirty politics; it's bad sportsmanship." ___ EDITOR'S NOTE — Glen Johnson has covered local, state and national politics since 1985. ___ Associated Press writers Beth Fouhy and Steve LeBlanc contributed to this report. was anything specific I might want recovered and I immediately asked for the ring," Josie said. "In a very tactful and sensitive way, they basically told me, We'll do what we can, but don't get your hopes up. So I figured it was kind of a lost cause." Maj. Robert Ungerman, a friend of Houghton's from the 388th Fighter Wing, served as the liaison officer for the Houghton family and was moved by what he said was Josie's one and only request. "We got some of his stuff from his car, from his desk, his locker and every time we returned something to her, she asked about the ring," Ungerman said. "Throughout the whole process, that's the only thing she asked for and to not be able to provide it was horrible." Ungerman, according to Houghton, "decided that no wasn't an acceptable answer to my question" and began organizing a team of volunteers to find the ring. Paul Nelson, chief of plans for the 75th Air Base Wing, suggested to Ungerman that the search team use the Ogden-based Trails West Artifact Society to join the search team with metal

detectors. "It was truly amazing to see it all come together," Ungerman said of the organization's effort. "There are so many links in the chain that went into this." On Oct. 17, some four months after Houghton's plane went down, a team of two Hill Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel, two members of Detachment One of the 388th Range Squadron, six volunteers who were stationed at the base, and the eight members from Trails West all headed to the crash site on a journey to find the ring. Lt. Col. Sean Keene, Detachment One commander at the 388th Range Squadron, said the search site encompassed an area approximately the size of eight football fields, with the group focusing on a central location within the search perimeter. As the search team reached the site, the initial enthusiasm quickly turned to pessimism. "We went down there with the best outcome in mind, but it kind of got discouraging after a while," said Master Sgt. David Czerwinski, a metal detector specialist and ground safety manager at the 388th Fighter Wing. "By about 3:30 p.m., I

thought, Oh boy, this doesn't look good. We just weren't getting anywhere and there was really no sign that things would change." Czerwinski said he soon realized the metal detectors weren't of much use because the group was "searching for metal in a metal field." In the setting sun of the late afternoon, the team began a desperate attempt to locate the ring using just their eyes. "It's a bombing range, so there are a million pieces of metal out there," Czerwinski said. "We were trying to isolate just titanium because that's what the ring is made of, but it wasn't working. It didn't look promising at all." But just after 4 p.m., as the team was about to pack up and quit the search, a metallic cylinder shining in the sun caught Keene's attention. "I thought I was seeing a mirage or something," he said. "You wanted to find this thing so bad that you almost started seeing things." Keene picked up the ring and yelled, "I think I found it! I think I found the ring!" The sudden announcement sent a jolt of energy into the weary search party members. "Everybody started running up to

him (Keene)," said Czerwinski. "I thought he was kidding at first. I was like, Man, that's not something you joke around about. " But it was no joke. The ring Keene found was Houghton's, identifiable by an inscription on the inside of the band. "Truthfully, when we got out there and started looking, I didn't think there was any way," Keene said. "It was a one-in-a-million chance. A needle in a haystack." Keene said the search wouldn't have been possible without Marcus Teeters, a civilian with the 388th Range Squadron who helped in the initial crash recovery and was intimately familiar with the crash site. After the crash, Josie moved from her home in Layton to Florida to pursue a degree in nursing, but she was scheduled to return to Hill for a squadron Halloween party two weeks after the search team found the ring. "We thought of a bunch of different ways to tell her, but ultimately we thought it would be best to give it to her in person," Ungerman said. When Josie came back to Utah, Ungerman and his wife invited her to stay at their home. When she arrived, she found an

envelope and a small box on the guest bed. "In the box there was a chain and then in the envelope there was a letter from the Ungermans saying that if I wanted something to wear with the chain, I should look under the pillow," Josie said. "I looked under the pillow and there was the ring. I looked at it and then sat down on the floor and bawled." Josie says she wears the ring on the chain around her neck every day, keeping it close to her heart. She says she'll be forever touched by the people who participated in the search. "I like to say that I've seen the best of humanity throughout this whole ordeal," she said. "There have been some amazing people who have gone to great lengths to let me know he's not forgotten and that I'm not forgotten. And that's something I will always remember." widows, children and other next of kin who aren't eligible. Some people filed more than one application. Some 16,000 claims are still being reviewed. The waiting has frustrated veterans who have already spent most of their lives pushing the government to fulfill its promises. "The long delay is justice denied. That's the saying. It's really true — it's an injustice somehow," said Art Caleda, president of the Hawaii chapter of World War II Filipino-American Veterans. About 400 applicants are in Hawaii, which has a large Filipino-American population. Most — or 65 percent — have been paid while 15 percent were denied. About 20 percent of the Hawaii claims are still pending, like Sotio's. "There are veterans who were able to file their application claims but then they died. What is the use of that?" said Caleda. "They're not only frustrated, they are dying you know. They're dying." More than 250,000 Filipinos served alongside U.S. soldiers to defend the Philippines from the 1941 Japanese invasion. They formed the resistance during the subsequent Japanese occupation.

The U.S. military assured Filipinos they would be able to apply for U.S. citizenship and qualify for full U.S. veterans' benefits if they served. But one year after Japan's surrender, the Rescission Act of 1946 declared that Filipinos were not in active service for the U.S. military during the war. This stripped Filipinos of their status as U.S. veterans and denied them the benefits they were promised. The veterans pushed for years to win back these benefits. Success came slowly and in bits. In 1990, Congress passed a bill allowing thousands to immigrate and become U.S. citizens. A decade later, the U.S. recognized the right of the veterans to be buried in national cemeteries. Congress considered legislation authorizing pensions to Filipino veterans several times over the years. It finally settled on the lump sum solution when it included $198 million for the program in last year's economic stimulus bill. The VA has distributed $136 million, or over two-thirds of the money, to date. It's prepared to ask lawmakers for additional funds if it appears it will exhaust the allocated amount. Veterans have until Feb. 16 to file.

Norma Sotio keeps a copy of her husband's application in their small apartment in an elderly housing complex in suburban Honolulu. It says Gaudencio Sotio served in the Commonwealth Army of the Philippines — a unit made up of U.S.-trained soldiers that was part of the U.S. Armed Forces of the Far East — during the war. After the war he joined the New Philippine Scouts— a unit of Philippine citizens that served with the U.S. Armed Forces and later worked as a radio newscaster. Gaudencio Sotio was a quiet man and never spoke much of the war, she said. But he kept a slim box full of medals, including a Purple Heart. Because her husband applied before he died, Norma Sotio would receive his benefit if the VA determines he had a valid claim. She says she'd share any money she receives with his children. Official: Man says he opened JFK door by mistake (AP) (Yahoo! News: U.S. News) Submitted at 1/17/2010 1:53:05 PM

NEW YORK – The man returning from Haiti who walked through a restricted door and set off an alarm at John F. Kennedy Airport has told police he went through the door by mistake. An official familiar with the case against Jules Paul Bouloute said Sunday that the 57-year-old told police he went to the wrong door by mistake while trying to exit the airport. The official was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The breach delayed dozens of flights and caused headaches for hundreds of travelers who had to exit the terminal and wait for hours while police swept through the building. Bouloute was arrested on a charge of criminal trespass. He was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday evening. ___ Associated Press Writer Amy Westfeldt contributed to this report. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. NEW YORK(AP) — A busy

terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport was evacuated after a man opened a restricted door and set off an alarm, authorities said, making it the second known security breach at a New York-area airport this month. The breach delayed dozens of flights and caused headaches for hundreds of travelers who had to exit the terminal and wait for hours as police swept through the building. The passengers at JFK were then shepherded through additional screening. The man, Jules Paul Bouloute, is of Haitian descent but lives in Brooklyn, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport. He was arrested on a charge of criminal trespass. Bouloute was in Haiti during Tuesday's earthquake but took a flight on Saturday from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to Orlando, Fla., where he caught a connecting flight to New York City, Coleman said. It wasn't immediately clear where Bouloute was when the earthquake struck, and it's unclear how or when he got from Haiti to the Dominican Republic, Coleman said.

Bouloute's phone number was unlisted. He was expected to be arraigned Sunday in Queens, Coleman said. Port Authority police were questioning him Saturday night. Authorities earlier said the security breach was caused by a passenger who was exiting Kennedy's Terminal 8 and opened a door that was supposed to be used only by airport workers. Coleman said security cameras recorded the incident just before 3:30 p.m. A similar incident happened two weeks ago at a New York-area airport: A security breach at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Jan. 3 forced passengers to be re-screened. Authorities were initially unsure Saturday whether the person had been coming or going from the JFK terminal, and they evacuated the secure areas of the building while they investigated. The Transportation Security Administration said its agents and Port Authority police were involved in the investigation. People waiting to get on their flights said they were awe-struck that someone could just walk through a restricted door at the airport.

"They have such big signs, I don't know how you can miss that," said Teijo Niemela of Lambertville, N.J., as he waited in a security line for a delayed flight to Helsinki. "That makes me angry about the whole system. We pay a lot of money because of someone's mistakes." Judy Erickson, a hairdresser who was waiting to get on a flight to Los Angeles, also said she was baffled by how easy it was for the passenger to go into a restricted area. "All those doors that you're not supposed to go through should have a guard or security," she said. Terminal 8 handles both domestic and international flights for American Airlines. A spokesman for the airline, Charley Wilson, said some flights were being delayed, and some planes were waiting on the tarmac for permission to proceed to their gates. He said the airline had estimated flights would be delayed two to three hours. Security officials began to let passengers back in around 6 p.m. but weren't sure how long it would take for everyone to pass through security checkpoints. Inside the terminal, hundreds of people waited in a long line outside the security gate. Dozens

of people sat on the floor with their bags. "The rest of us are made to suffer," said Meganne Harvey, 22, who was trying to fly home to San Diego after a trip to Paris. The incident is the third evacuation in five months at airports that serve New York City. A Rutgers University graduate student from China, Haisong Jiang, 28, was charged last week with trespassing in the security breach at the Newark airport. Flights were grounded for hours and passengers were re-screened while air safety officials searched for a man who had walked through the exit of a security checkpoint. Jiang's arraignment is set for Jan. 28 in Newark. In August, a terminal at LaGuardia was evacuated after police tackled a disturbed man who was carrying a device that looked like a bomb but turned out to be harmless. pony up $14,000 to shoot a trophy elk. For $4,000, they can harvest a bull bison out of a herd of more than 1,000 of the animals that Turner has been building up for two decades. His representatives insist the Yellowstone animals are more valuable for their genetics and would be off limits. Yellowstone's bison, also known as buffalo, represent one the last vestiges of the massive herds that once roamed across North America— tens of millions of animals that were all but wiped out in the late 19th century. Turner's representatives say his plan for the 88 park bison would advance a long-standing advocacy for wildlife restoration. It also gains him the animals' unique and valuable genetics. "We don't understand the antipathy," said Turner Enterprises general manager Russell Miller. He said Turner is interested in the animals as a way to further his private bison conservation efforts, not for their market value. "That doesn't mean there won't

be a market somewhere way out in the future," he added. Turner's plan is expected to be acted on by the end of the month by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Guernsey State Park in Wyoming has also put in a proposal to the agency for 14 bison. Montana officials were largely caught off guard by the billionaire's initial bid, which came at the invitation of the state's Democratic governor, Brian Schweitzer. State and federal pronouncements going back to at least 2005 had called for the quarantined animals to be relocated onto public or tribal lands. Before Turner came along, those pronouncements included an explicit prohibition against commercialization of the animals. When plans last spring to move them onto a Wyoming Indian reservation fell through — and the specter of slaughter was raised — the ban on commercialization was lifted. Neither Montana nor the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the

state's partner in the project, has ever offered to take the animals. That's due in large part to a broader dispute over whether wild bison belong anywhere in the state outside of Yellowstone. Many ranchers see free-roaming bison as a disease risk and unwanted competition for the grass that feeds their cattle herds. Meanwhile, conservationists are sinking millions of dollars into restoration efforts for the animal. That includes an attempt by the American Prairie Foundation to buy up vast swaths of land in eastern Montana ranches and create a 3 million acre reserve for bison and other wildlife. "We don't have a real clear direction of what we want to do with bison," said Montana fish and wildlife director David Risley. "Are they going to be behind a fence forever, or is there a place in Montana where they can be free-roaming?" Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Suspect in JFK Airport Security Breach Arrested (FOXNews.com) Submitted at 1/17/2010 5:11:01 AM

NEW YORK A busy terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport was evacuated after a man opened a restricted door and set off an alarm, authorities said, making it the second known security breach at a New Yorkarea airport this month. Gravel beaches trapping oil from 1989 Exxon spill (AP) (Yahoo! News: U.S. News) Submitted at 1/17/2010 12:24:42 PM

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – An engineering professor has figured out why oil remains trapped along miles of gravel beaches more than 20 years after the Exxon Valdez tanker disaster in Prince William Sound. An estimated 20,000 gallons of crude remain in Prince William Sound, even though oil remaining after the nearly 11million-gallon spill had been expected to biodegrade and wash away within a few years. The problem: The gravelly beaches of Prince William Sound are trapping the oil between two layers of rock, with larger rocks on top and finer gravel underneath, according to Michel C. Boufadel, chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Temple University. His study appeared Sunday in Nature Geoscience's online publication and will be published in the journal later. Boufadel found that water, which could have broken up and dissipated the oil, moved through the lower level of gravel up to 1,000 times slower than the top level. Once the oil entered the lower level, conditions were right to keep it there, he said. Tidal GRAVEL page 49

forces worked to compact the finer-grained gravel even more, creating a nearly oxygen-free environment with low nutrient levels that slowed the ability of the oil to biodegrade. "The oil could be maybe one foot below the beach surface and in contact with sea water with a lot of oxygen, but the oxygen doesn't get to it," Boufadel said. He found that the upper layer of beach is so permeable that the water table falls within it as fast as the tide. However, the permeability of the lower level is so low that the water table does not drop much within it, he said. Boufadel said the study points out the susceptibility of beaches worldwide to long-term oil contamination, especially at higher latitudes where beaches tend to be gravel or a mixture of sand and gravel. "As global warming is melting the ice cover and exposing the Arctic to oil exploitation and shipping through sea routes such as the Northwest Passage, the

continued from page 42

risk of oil spills on gravel beaches in high-latitude regions will be increased," the study says. Boufadel and his team dug about 70 pits between 3-feet and 5-feet deep on six beaches during summers from 2007 to 2009. His report focuses on data collected on Eleanor Island, about 15 miles away from Bligh Reef where the Exxon Valdez grounded on March 24, 1989. Peter Hagen, program manager for Exxon studies for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said Boufadel's study is a continuation of previous work that began in 2001 when 9,000 pits were dug around the sound, confirming the presence of oil. While the remaining oil likely remains somewhat locked up in the beaches, the spill's lingering effects are ongoing, Hagen said. Sea otters, sea ducks and some sea birds are producing an enzyme showing exposure to oil. Boufadel's study was funded by

a $1.2 million, three-year grant from the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council. The council was formed after the environmental disaster to oversee restoration of the sound. Boufadel doesn't know how long it might take for the remaining oil to finally disappear but predicted it will take a long time. "It will be a slow process because the oil is relatively sheltered from water motion," he said. ___ On the Net:

Chile awaits poll run-off result (BBC News | Americas | World Edition) Submitted at 1/17/2010 4:02:30 AM

Polls have closed in Chile's presidential run-off, which could see the first conservative government for more than two decades. Billionaire Sebastian Pinera won 44% of the vote in last month's first round, well ahead of Eduardo Frei of the governing Social Democrats. But opinion polls suggest the

outcome of the second round will be very close. Chile's last conservative leader was military ruler Gen Augusto Pinochet, who stepped down in 1990. Mr Frei, 67, is seeking his second term as president after an absence of 10 years. Mr Pinera, 60, owns a television channel, a stake in Chile's most successful football club and has millions of dollars in investments. He has campaigned on a tough

law-and-order programme and has vowed to use his business know-how to reactivate the economy. This is the second time Mr Pinera has run for the presidency at the head of a centre-right coalition. - 7 tips for transforming leadership (Holy Kaw!) Submitted at 1/17/2010 10:38:00 AM

You don’t need a fancy title, specific background, or vast recognition to be a leader. In fact, you don’t even need to be the one in charge. To be a leader, you simply have to stand up, assert authority, and enable the team to achieve a target. Here are seven brilliant tips for transforming leadership. 1. Group triage. A very important step for a leader is to comprehensively understand all the various tasks needing to be accomplished to reach the goal. They must ask the questions: Who is best at what? Who would be most effective where? Hopefully you will already know, but most of the time you will need to find out. This will be the case in temporary-team situations. So, clearly ask what they would be best at within the available tasks to accomplish?

El Salvador head's abuse apology (BBC News | Americas | World Edition) Submitted at 1/16/2010 7:44:25 PM

The president of El Salvador has apologised for human rights abuses committed by the state during country's 12-year civil war. President Mauricio Funes made the first formal apology by one of the country's presidents since

the end of the conflict in 1992. He said the right-wing authorities who governed the country at the time had committed grave human rights abuses. He also said they had violated the country's constitutional order. "In the name of the state of El Salvador, I ask for pardon," said the president, speaking at a ceremony on the 18th

anniversary of the end of the conflict. Those words - the first of their kind since the end of the war by a Salvadoran president - will be welcomed by the families of the more than 75,000 people who died in the conflict. Spector's work has been shown internationally and at venues such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington. A native of Chicago, Spector earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and his MFA at the University of Chicago. While a graduate student, he co-founded WhiteWalls, a magazine written by artists. He has written extensively for numerous journals, and has published books of essays and collections of photographs. Spector was chairman of the art department at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. At Washington University, he is also the Jane Reuter Hizeman and Herbert F. Hizeman Jr. Professor of Art. "He's an intellectual giant in the art world," David says. "To find out he was coming to St. Louis, it was really a coup. The book is

like a guardian of the past. As a painter, he's trying to utilize that." People are constantly giving him books, and he once went to a book fair and hauled off all of the unsold works, which required a rental truck and some help from friends. "For the stuff I work with, having lots of (books) is really important," Spector says. He owns about 10,000 books. "At one time, I knew exactly (how many)," he says. That was on Dec. 31, 1994, when he counted his 3,951 volumes for "Unpacking My Library," an installation at the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art and the San Diego State University Art Gallery for inSITE94. Part of that project was to count the books he owned and then to count all of the pages of text or images inside them. But it's never just been about books. Spector has worked with food, photos, old postcards and handmade paper. Some of his best-known works involve the cold. In 1991 at the

Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, he created "Cold Fashioned Room," a room filled with Victorian furnishings and chilled to 28 degrees. The only visual indicator of the cold was a frozen vase of roses. It was widely written about in the press, and Spector says people still mention it to him. Another part of Spector's repertoire is using books to make portraits. He once made a portrait of artist Dieter Roth. When he pulled the box of books about Roth from his car and took a look, he realized he already had what he needed. "I didn't even take them out of the box," he said. "I just turned the box on its side, took the top layer off and realized ‌ I had quite by accident come up with a tantalizing visual array." His warm manner and depth of experience make him a welcome addition to the community at Washington University, says Carmon Colangelo, dean of the Sam Fox school. "There's a sense of his maturity as an artist," Colangelo says. "When he presents to the

students, he really tends to cover a lot of ground. He's very philosophical and he loves to talk about the nuances of making art and education. I do sense from the students already the connection. They talk about him by first name." Spector has had an association with St. Louis for many years. He and his wife, Njara Stout, have had family here. "I have had a long time to admire (Washington University) from a distance," Spector says. He didn't know much about the art department, but he had for some years known Colangelo, who recruited him. "When I got here, I realized I had been away for too long," Spector says. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction.
