The House passage of healthcare legislation means different things to different folks. For President Barack Obama it was a “courageous vote” by members of Congress. Obama went to Capitol Hill Saturday to personally press for passage. Today he was full of praise. “Given the heated and often misleading rhetoric surrounding this legislation, I know that this was a courageous vote for many members of Congress,” Obama said in the Rose Garden. For Sarah Palin the healthcare bill was a mess. “We’ve got to hold on to hope, and we’ve got to fight hard because Congressional action tonight just put America on a path toward an unrecognizable country,” Palin said on her Facebook page. “This out-of-control bureaucratic

entirely reasonable but was a position taken more out of distrust of the media than any kind of Palestinian sympathy. The initial media hysteria in these instances is usually wrong. Never forget poor Richard Jewell. So if Hassan was indeed an American-hating extremist, what are we to make of it? The brick-andmortar book retailer's e-reader, the Nook, which hasn't even hit stores yet, is in pre-order nirvana right now. The first run for the Nook occurred at the end of October(the product was introduced on October 20). These buyers were told the reader would ship on November 30. High demand resulted in backorders, so the next wave of pre-orders was scheduled to ship on December 7. Now, a third group will have to wait until December 11.

US $2.99 [ iTunes Link] for iPhones running OS 3.0 or better, is something I haven't seen before, and it's really very clever. TUAW first got a look at an early development version of Balloons! back at WWDC, including a video interview with the developer. Balloon mail has been used, along with the more common phrase message in a bottle, to describe sending a message into the wind or sea and hoping that

someone finds it and contacts you. It's sort of non-directional social networking with a hint of mystery built in. In this app, you start making a balloon by choosing from a variety of balloon styles. Next you create a message that the balloon will convey. Tap in the middle of the screen and the camera activates to take a picture of what's going on in your life at the moment. Then add a bit of text and send the balloon out into the world. Other users, over 900 in the first 3 days of sales, are doing the same thing. Over 3500 balloons have been sent up from the US, Europe, and Japan already. Next, you'll want to catch a balloon. When you do, you'll see the message from the person who made the balloon along with a separate flippable page from everyone who caught the balloon,

Apple support boards are beginning to fill up with complaints about tracking issues and Bluetooth disconnects. There are also complaints about the lack of a third mouse button, and some all-too-early hardware failures. I liked the Magic Mouse when I saw it at my local Apple Store, so I took one home for my Mac Pro. It seemed to work for awhile, but now it is very erratic at tracking and speed, even when MouseZoom is installed. Its Bluetooth connection has dropped several times, and it either comes back after a long wait or simply fails to connect again. When I moved back to my wired Apple mouse, I found that I had actually preferred the form factor

of the Magic Mouse, and I missed the button-less scroll wheel. The Magic Mouse seems to be working fine for many users, but there are some hints that the little rodents are having trouble with some older hardware. My 2006 Intel-based Mac Pro may be one of the computers at issue. Apple will hopefully issue a software update, if that is the problem. archives. Brewster Kahle is talking about the Internet Archive making public S3 storage (what Amazon rents) free on their servers. Does anyone have any more info on this?

Wanna make a hit song? The ’standard’ way of doing it is learning to play an instrument, finding a couple more musicians, practice, create some songs, find a publisher… …or you can scrap all that and let the YouTube community do the entire work for you. I’ve Got Nothing is a song that’s been entirely crowdsourced. A youngster called Charlie McDonnell, together with three other teenagers, have created the project as part of BBC’s ChartJackers, an attempt to break into the UK music charts without…well, pretty much everything: money, producer, studio, even musicians. Here’s the official description of how the song was created: “The lyrics of the song are made up of YouTube comments, compiled into a song by another YouTuber. The lyrics were released and then YouTubers wrote a melody for the lyrics, and we picked our favourite. We held

YouTube auditions via video response to pick the band, found the producer of the song through YouTube, and the music video is made up of literal interpretations of the lyrics, clapping and singing along, by YouTubers!” The resulting song and the video, which you can see below, follow the “standards” for a viral hit: extremely catchy melody and a happy video with young people singing along. While it’s hard to predict if it’ll become a huge hit, it definitely has the ingredients, and the community to support it. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how far can such an effort go, competing with professionally produced songs and videos that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Filed under: Accessories, iPhone Way back in September, we announced that Mobile Mechatronics was going to be selling a combination of a tiny tripod and an iPhone app called Blur. The idea behind this combo is that the tripod can hold your iPhone more steadily than your hand can, and then the software can assist you by either taking a photo after a delay or taking several photos in quick succession. At the time, I asked Mobile Mechatronics to send some samples for us to test and then give away. The tripods arrived very quickly, but the software was nowhere to be found. In my quest to get review equipment out of my office and into the hands of TUAW readers, I kept searching the App Store for the app. It appears that Mobile Mechatronics fell into the bane of iPhone developers everywhere -slow approval of apps -- because

Rupert Murdoch is threatening to pull his content from Google. Is this a bluff?(Credit: Dan Farber/CNET) Rupert Murdoch, the media tycoon who has long accused Google of ripping off content from his newspapers, says his sites may soon disappear from the search engine's listings. Murdoch, who is chairman of News Corp., the newspaper, TV and Internet empire that includes The Wall Street Journal, Hulu, The New York Post, and 20th Century Fox, made his comments during an interview with Sky News Australia. After Murdoch accused Google, Microsoft and others of "stealing" his company's content, he was asked why he just doesn't pull his Web sites from Google's search results. "I think we will," Murdoch responded. "But that's when we start charging." Murdoch and other News Corp. execs have said that they intend to charge readers and viewers. In the past, the company's sites have relied on advertising revenue. Murdoch made it clear he's no fan of the ad-supported model ("There are no news sites or blog sites making any serious money").

"What's the point of having someone come occasionally who likes a headline they see in Google," Murdoch continued. "The fact is there isn't enough advertising in the world to go around to make all the Web sites profitable. We'd rather have fewer people coming to our Web sites but paying." When asked why he would buck the trend of offering free content, Murdoch said: "(The public) shouldn't have had it free. I think we've been asleep." Google has said that it feels

obligated to help media companies because it needs their content. That hasn't stopped Murdoch and his staff from continuing to make hostile comments about the search engine. What News Corp hasn't done much of is follow up with much action. Is News Corp trying to scare Google into making more concessions? Or is News Corp just afraid to pull the trigger? If you needed proof that social gaming is huge business, look no further than today’s blockbuster news. Video gaming giant Electronics Arts (EA for short) just announced that it has acquired the social gaming company Playfish for a deal that could be worth up to $400 million. While there have been rumors of potential acquisition, the deal is now official. EA will pay $275 million in cash and $25 million in equity for the company. In addition, if Playfish achieves certain “performance milestones” (aka continues to grow), the price tag could go up to a full $400 million. And there’s no reason to think Playfish won’t continue to rapidly grow along with the social gaming market. The

company is responsible for some of the most popular games on Facebook, MySpace, and the iPhone, including Pet Society, Restaurant City, and Country Story. But if and when these two products face off in court, attorneys will be arguing whether the Google product - which, if only because it came after Reframe It's version, is without question a knockoff - is in actual violation of Reframe It's patents. And since Reframe It's patent application is still pending, they can amend the language to include Sidewiki's UX, technology, etc. The situation is, indeed, fraught with drama. But because of the way syndication works (different areas air the show at different times) there are no overnight ratings for syndicated shows. I expect we might see some ratings information (ratings points) in a few days. But we will not likely see the viewer averages for the premiere episode until Tuesday, November 17 since syndicated show numbers take a week longer to produce than the numbers for broadcast and cable shows. A few days ago I added OPML export to listbrowser.org. Today I want to extend that support to include information from the social network about each user. In this case, the social network is Twitter. I could see situations where this namespace might be used to present information from status.net or Facebook, when they support lists, as Twitter has. I'm going to use the name xSocial. The "x" could stand for one of two things: 1. XML or 2. Experimental, in the spirit of MIME types that are considered experimental or ad hoc, or proposals of future standards, and have an "x" in front of their names. In other words, I'm doing this because someone has to go first, and maybe someone already has, so this is my way of asking for comments (or, more likely, flames). There’s no doubt that cloud computing is a growing trend. All you have to look at is the popularity of netbooks to see that many people nowadays will be quite happy with a computing device that gives them access to the web, and not much else. I’m certainly part of this trend, as I write this story I have the following web-based applications open on my Mac: • Twitter • Google Reader • Evernote • Google Calendar • Remember The Milk • Gmail • Facebook • WordPress • Socialcast • Lexulous What surprises me isn’t how many web apps I’m accessing, but how few native Mac applications I am using to access these services. I am using Tweetie to access Twitter, Evernote has it’s own native Mac application and I use BusyCal to access Google Calendar. Apart from that, all of these web services are being accessed either via Safari (Facebook and Lexulous), or via Site Specific

Browsers(SSBs), which means I’m using the naked, if you will, web interface for the application. Two years ago I never would have done this. I actually wrote a whole blog post, on a now defunct blog, about how I eschewed web-based applications in favor of native Mac apps because I wanted a Mac-like experience. As such I used Mail.app to get my email, NetNewsWire for RSS feeds, Omni Focus for tasks, etc. Nowadays I use web-based apps for all those functions. There were several factors that led me to this place. First of all web based apps have become better in terms of user experience, in some cases even exceeding, in my opinion, the user experience of the native Mac alternative, for example Gmail versus Mail. Although Google’s web apps aren’t particularly pretty, they are well thought out, and some other web apps are almost elegant, like Remember the Milk. The iPhone has also been a driving force towards web-based applications because they are more likely to offer the ability to easily synchronize over the air. For example, I would love to use Things as my main task manager, but the simple reality is that I never remember to go through the rigamarole of synchronizing

via Wi-Fi. If I can’t sync over the air with my iPhone, then I don’t want to use it on my Mac. Probably the most important driving force, however, has been features. Google Reader is an excellent example of this. I recently went over several native Google Reader clients for the Mac, but despite this range of choices, I’m still using a site specific browser to access Google Reader. Why? Because none of these applications offer the feature set that the actual website does, and I actually use all of those features. I’ve faced similar problems with native Mac apps that purport to give you access to Facebook or WordPress. The reality is that many web applications have reached the point of complexity that building a third-party client for them becomes very difficult, especially on the desktop where users will

demand feature parity, or something close to it. Unless a company is building their own client, such as Evernote, or the service is exceedingly simple, such as Twitter, desktop clients are constantly going to be playing a losing game of catchup. What all this means for users like myself is that more and more of my computing experience is moving away from the Mac and to the web(subscription required). I love the Mac, I love the combination of stability, elegance, ease of use and power Apple’s computers offer me, but I have to admit that I’m taking less advantage of the platform than I have in the past, and unless something drastic changes, that trend is only going to continue. Apple doesn’t seem to be making aggressive moves towards building better support for web applications into the operating system, and this may be a dangerous mistake. Someday in the not to distant future something approaching 100 percent of the average user’s computing is going to move online, and when that happens Apple may find itself flat footed in a new world, and I may find myself looking for a computing platform better suited for my actual use.

There's a meme going around about fathers and the coolest things they did when you were growing up. Since Father's Day on October 3, I guess I've been reflecting on this stuff more than usual, and I have a story prepared. But first, my father actually had an opinion about this, he told a story that embarassed me about how he taught me to kiss. But I'm sure I thought it was cool when I was a toddler. Kids go for that kind of stuff. But the word we're looking for is "cool" and from my point of view, as an adult, here's the coolest thing my dad did. Probably 1970 or 71. I was more than a bit of a rebellious teenager. So one day I got suspended from high school for bringing a bottle of wine to school. I was drinking with some friends in the yard before home room when the Dean of Discipline, Joey Cotter, comes walking out, takes the bottle, escorts me to his office and calls my father to come get me. My dad drives to the Bronx from Queens, and I thought for sure I'm really going to catch it now, cause not only was I drinking wine in school, but it was his wine. I had stolen it from him.

Oy. Well, my dad comes in, and instead of giving me shit, he tells off Cotter. He says why don't you leave the kids alone. My chin dropped to the floor. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. I thought I had moved to a different planet. The Dean thought so too, he was speechless. (He and I were enemies, I was, as you might imagine, and a major troublemaker. Paul Mooney is well known to stand-up comedians for his own work and for writing for his longtime friend, Richard Pryor. Outside of that, though, his name recognition gets a little fuzzier. So for TV comedy fans, Mooney's new memoir, Black Is the New White, provides some great behind-the-scenes moments they should probably know. There are a lot of heartfelt stories about Richard Pryor and Mooney's own personal life, but there is a lot of fun TV trivia, as well. Mooney talks about getting forced onstage by a couple of friends to do his first solo standup spot in the early 60s in San Francisco. Mooney is drunk and nervous, and winds up doing the act of a comic named Ronnie Schell, who would later co-star with Jim Nabors on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Mooney admits

Mooney talks about Pryor's meltdown on The Richard Pryor Show(which featured future stars like Robin Williams, Sandra Bernhard, and John Witherspoon), territory that has been covered before, but not from the perspective of a friend like Mooney. And Mooney devotes a bit of time to In Living Color, which adopted his concept for Homey the Clown and the catch phrase, "Homey don't play that." Earlier in his career, Mooney was also a dancer on a show called Dance Party, a sort of west coast version of American Bandstand. It would be interesting to see those old tapes. There's a lot to be happy about if you're a fan of General Hospital. There's been some very good news from the soap. Things like James Franco's guest role and the return of the original Lucky, Jonathan Jackson. And Steve Burton has committed to playing Jason for a while longer. And now comes some news that's downright reassuring. Laura Wright has re-signed a four year deal with GH. She Twittered the news to her fans. Four years! To me, this means that not only can we count on the character of Carly being around for a long time to come -- and played by the same actress who has the most tenure in the part -- but also that GH will likely be around for four more years. I like quirky shows. I do. And I wanted to like Glee. I even sort of liked the pilot last season. I didn’t love it, but I liked it well enough to commit to trying it in the fall. When it returned, I hated it. Oh, there are certain charming aspects, and of the three episodes I’ve watched since the fall premiere there have been moments that make me really want to like the show. But there’s something about it that just rubs me the wrong way. I finally figured out what it is: This is one of the most misogynistic shows on TV right now. Every single female on the show

is lying, scheming, manipulative or just downright evil. The only exception is Emma, who is crazy, instead. Females are treated pretty poorly on TV in general, but I can’t think of any other show where there is not at least

one female who is presented in a more positive light. Even Dollhouse, which people love to accuse of misogyny, doesn’t present the whole female population as either crazy or manipulative.

Now, if the show presented everyone, male and female, in similar lights, that would be another story. But the males on the show are all innocent, good people. Every lying, scheming woman, is lying and scheming to a man. Not the other way around. So while there are reasons to enjoy the show, I’m glad I’ve pinpointed the reason why I can’t. It’s a much more definitively answer to give to people who ask why I’m not watching than just, “Half the time, it makes me want to throw my TV out the window for some reason.” This content has passed through fivefilters.org.

Johnson on Sunday served a one -game suspension for making gay slurs. He was 75 yards from breaking Priest Holmes' franchise record (6,070) for career rushing yards. The Chiefs suspended Johnson without pay through Sunday, the team's bye week, after he questioned coach Todd Haley's qualifications on his Twitter

account and twice used a homosexual slur in an exchange with one of his Twitter followers. Last Monday, Kansas City reached a settlement with Johnson through his agent, reducing the amount of pay Johnson would lose by half, to $315,000. The Chiefs initially cleared Johnson to return to the team's facility and participate in team activities beginning Monday. Small Plane Crashes in Florida Everglades

Rescue crews haven't been able to locate any survivors from a small plane crash in the Florida Everglades. According to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, alert drivers on Interstate 75 called dispatchers Sunday night to report the low-flying aircraft. One caller thought the plane crashed, while other drivers said it appeared to disappear. Crews located the crash site Sunday night. Authorities say it appears the single-engine airplane nose-dived into the Everglades. Homicide detectives are expected to be on the scene Monday to continue their investigation.
