SEN. BODI WHITE explained his bills to create the Southeast Baton Rouge School District in the State Senate Chamber.

BATON ROUGE — Legislation to create the new Southeast Community School District narrowly passed the Louisiana Senate last week 27-11, just one vote more than the two-thirds’ majority necessary for a constitutional amendment. Then Tuesday the legislation passed out of the House Education Committee by a vote of 10-6. Now the final vote is looming in the Louisiana House, and the outcome is uncertain. Every vote will count. Sen. Bodi White’s legislation includes SB73, a constitutional amendment, which is necessary to create the district, and SB199, the implementing statute. The district would be bounded on the north by I-12 and the west by I-10. Proponents believe it would attract about 6,800 students and have a budget of $76 million. They say it has the potential to become one of the best school

BATON ROUGE — A recent study by Georgetown University shows that people with a bachelor’s degree earn 84 percent more, on the average, than people with a high school diploma. Over the course of a lifetime, that could amount to a million dollars or more. That extra million dollars is exactly what Craig Gehring is focusing on — how to help you make it. Gehling is something of a phenom. He scored a perfect 36 on the ACT and a perfect 800 on the SAT. That’s almost unheard of. A handful of people in the country

make a perfect score on one or the other, but very few have done both. Now Gehling is helping students improve their ACT scores. On the average, he can help a student improve by three to four points. With Louisiana’s TOPS program keyed to ACT testing, an extra three or four points can make the difference between some people earning a full college scholarship or even a full scholarship plus a generous stipend. Gehring’s company, Ring Marketing, has developed a course that can be taken on-

Benghazi, Boston Bombers, Gosnell, IRS, AP Liberal Orthodoxy Now In Full Retreat as Facts Show Consequences Of a Bankrupt Ideology Woody Jenkins

Editor, Capital City News

BATON ROUGE — The events of the past few weeks have brought the roof down not only on the Obama Administration but on the entire liberal movement. How can anyone in his right mind continue to support this bankrupt ideology? Here are a few notes about some of the things that have happened: Benghazi. The Obama Administration convinced itself that the real problem was not militant Islamic terrorists but the USA. If we just talked nice, we could all be friends.

Obama failed to provide adequate security for our diplomats in Libya. Then, when our consulate was under attack, Obama refused to supply help. He abandoned our men in the face of the enemy for the worst of reasons — it wasn’t in his political interests to do so. Then, of course, he and his people lied about it. And lied. And lied. Benghazi reminds us that: • Appeasement doesn’t work. • The threat of radical Islamic terrorism is real and isn’t going away. • Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. • If you lie to the American people, you will pay the price. Boston Bombing. The liberal website Salon.com said shortly after the bombing: “Let’s Hope the Boston Marathon Bomber Is a White American.” Of course, it wasn’t. The bombers were Islamic immigrants who came here with their extended family. They came on questionable grounds that they

were persecuted in their native land. Yet, they have freely travelled back and forth to their country. The bombers got more than $100,000 in government benefits and milked the system — and you the taxpayer. Then they murdered as many of us as they could! The Boston bombing reminds us: • All the gun control in the world is not going to stop a terrorist or a criminal. Gun control would only prevent the law-abiding citizen from getting weapons to defend himself, his home, and his family. • Our wide open borders are a disaster. We cannot allow everyone from around the world to continue to flood into this country. And we need to systematically remove illegal aliens from our country. • We are fools if we continue to give welfare, Food Stamps, scholarships, and other benefits to aliens — legal or illegal. • The death penalty, which was abolished in Massachusetts by the bleeding heart left, is the only just punishment for certain heinous crimes, and it is a travesty that Massachusetts would, if left to themselves, not impose it in this case. Gosnell. Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist and mass murderer, was convicted of murdering three helpless infants and allowing one of his adult patients to die. What Gosnell did was put into our living rooms what the pro-life movement has been unable to do for 40 years. He exposed the reality of abortion. What Gosnell did in secret is done in secret in “clinics” all over the country, including right here in Baton Rouge.

We have allowed these butchers to tear apart, burn, and poison more than 50 million of our most precious possessions — our children. Gosnell reminds us that: • Abortion is murder. • Abortionists and those in their clinics participate in the most evil, vile, and diabolical of activities — the Woody Jenkins killing of babies. IRS. The IRS admitted this week that they have systematically targeted conservatives for harassment and destruction. This is nothing new. The IRS has targeted conservatives under Republican and Democratic administrations for decades. The IRS scandal reminds us: • The IRS should be abolished and a new agency put in its place with an entirely different culture and mentality. Associated Press. The Obama Administration has admitted it secretly seized thousands of phone records of the AP in New York and Washington. Now, finally, the liberal media is squealing! Shouldn’t all of us join together and agree that all of constitutional liberties are essential to a free society? Shouldn’t we all stand up for the right to life in the 14th Amendment, the right to keep and bear arms in the 2nd Amendment, and the freedom of speech and the press in the 1st Amendment? Yes indeed, the left is on the run. What they stand for is a lie, and that is clear for all to see.

He recalls the young boy born with no arms. The first morning they wouldn’t play reveille or raise the flag because he hadn’t made his bed. BATON ROUGE — Paul Dietzel II, local businessman and grandson of the former LSU football coach of the same name, announced his candidacy Thursday for Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District. Congressman Bill Cassidy is leaving the seat to run for U.S. Senate against Sen. Mary Landrieu. Dietzel is founder and CEO at Anedot, a Baton Rouge-based software company. He cites hurdles placed on business by government along with the dysfunction and spending in Washington, D.C., as contributing factors in his decision to run for Congress. “Higher taxes and mandates from Washington are forcing companies to cut worker hours and preventing them from hiring new workers,” Dietzel said. “Our country needs new leadership and new ideas, and I’m running for Congress to bring that fresh perspective we need.” Dietzel will also focus on supporting education solutions so our children get the education they deserve, and so Louisiana’s employers have a well-trained workforce. Dietzel is a conservative, pro-life Republican and a lifetime NRA member who will defend our Second Amendment rights, he said. Dietzel received his undergraduate degree from LSU. He earned his Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Policy from Pepperdine University. He is the first Republican to publicly announce his candidacy for the 6th Congressional District race. Louisiana’s 6th District consists of East Baton Rouge, Livingston, Ascension, La-

The Baton Rouge High junior led the Lady Bulldogs to the State 5A Track & Field Championships, and she did so in convincing style, breaking one state record and roaring past her competition in the other races. Altogether, she won four gold medals. Brisco set a new state record in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.87. The previous record stood for 16 years. She won the 100 meters in 11.55, 7/10ths of a second ahead of the next competitor. She ran the 100 only seconds after winning the 110 hurdles. She won the 200 meters in 23.85, just off the state record. And she anchored the 4x100 relay, which won with a time of 47.35, nearly a second ahead of No. 2 Scotlandville. For her exhibition, Mikiah Brisco was named the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer.

line or in-person over six Saturdays. It costs $150. There are no guarantees but, so far, students are pretty consistently improving their scores by three to four points based on an ACT practice test they take at the beginning and the score they ultimately make on the ACT. Even if you don’t take his course, Gehring offered some tips: • The ACT is the first multi-subject, timed test most students take, and they are not prepared. So taking practice exams is vital. • Answer every question, because you don’t lose points for wrong answers. • Get one-on-one instruction such as he offers. Classroom settings don’t work as well, he said. • Test-taking techniques are im-

portant but ultimately you can’t fool the ACT. You need to have mastered the content. That means studying the subjects that the ACT tests. • Learn to read. Too many kids don’t ever learn the basics and can’t read. Read things you like, and read a lot. • Learn to focus. Students today are distracted by devices and other students. Get away by yourself with no distractions. Study and read. • Be familiar with the kind of questions asked on the ACT. Gehring’s next six-week course begins May 28 at the Louisiana Technology Park. For more information, go to www.actprepcamp.com or email Craig Gehring at craig@actprepcamp.com.

Congratulations Seniors of 2013 As a former student of Central High School, I would like to congratulate all of the graduating seniors of 2013 in Central, Livingston, and the surrounding areas. Don’t be afraid to follow your heart and intuitions to make a positive difference in your community, state, and nation. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Don’t go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I challenge you to be a trail blazer and wish you the best as you start this new chapter in your life.

Southeast BR Schools: A Critical Vote Continued from Page 1

districts in the state. Zachary and Central broke away from East Baton Rouge and are now ranked No. 1 and No. 5. The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board has led the opposition to the proposed school and used taxpayer funds to hire two private lobbying firms to lobby the legislature against the new district. Opponents have said the new district would hurt the East Baton Rouge school system financially. Sen. White responded by saying East Baton Rouge is the wealthiest parish in the state and would retain all major industry, Mall of Louisiana, Cortana Mall, and almost all Wal-Marts. He also cited the analysis by the Legislative Fiscal Office that EBR would get more per child after the breakaway. Opponents of the new district have also charged support of the plan is motivated by a desire to “resegregate” East Baton Rouge. However, the proposed new district is projected to be slightly black in its student enrollment or about 50-50. Sen. White said he is bringing the legislation because of an overwhelming demand from the people of Southeast Baton Rouge for their own school system. He said the EBR system has failed and people are tired of waiting for it to change. Norman Browning, chairman of Local Schools for Local Children, has held numerous public meetings in the district supporting the plan, some drawing as many as 1,000 people. In addition to the EBR school board, opposition has come from a group called One Community, One School District. It says the new school district will not offer magnet schools. Browning said that magnet schools are usually offered only in failing school districts. He noted that all of the schools in Zachary and Central are rated A by the state.
