Central High: 100 Years 100th Anniversary of 1st Graduating Class

CENTRAL — Nearly 270 seniors will receive diplomas at Central High School’s graduation ceremonies Friday night at Bethany World Prayer Center in Baker. It is the 100th anniversary of Central High’s first graduating class in 1913. Principal Bob Wales has asked everyone attending the event to be in their seats by 6 p.m. He emphasized that traffic on Plank Road in Baker is difficult at that time of day, and everyone needs to get an early start. The event will honor valedictorians Morgan Durr and Crystal Rankin and salutatorian Sydnie Landry. Most of this edition is devoted to graduation. For a look back at history, read the Valedictory Address of 1913.

Benghazi, Boston Bombers, Gosnell, IRS, AP Liberal Orthodoxy Now In Full Retreat as Facts Show Consequences Of a Bankrupt Ideology Woody Jenkins

Editor, Central City News

CENTRAL — The events of the past few weeks have brought the roof down not only on the Obama Administration but on the entire liberal movement. How can anyone in his right mind continue to support this bankrupt ideology? Here are a few notes about some of the things that have happened: Benghazi. The Obama Administration convinced itself that the real problem was not militant Islamic terrorists but the USA. If we just talked nice, we could all be friends.

Obama failed to provide adequate security for our diplomats in Libya. Then, when our consulate was under attack, Obama refused to supply help. He abandoned our men in the face of the enemy for the worst of reasons — it wasn’t in his political interests to do so. Then, of course, he and his people lied about it. And lied. And lied. Benghazi reminds us that: • Appeasement doesn’t work. • The threat of radical Islamic terrorism is real and isn’t going away. • Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. • If you lie to the American people, you will pay the price. Boston Bombing. The liberal website Salon.com said shortly after the bombing: “Let’s Hope the Boston Marathon Bomber Is a White American.” Of course, it wasn’t. The bombers were Islamic immigrants who came here with their extended family. They came on questionable grounds that they

were persecuted in their native land. Yet, they have freely travelled back and forth to their country. The bombers got more than $100,000 in government benefits and milked the system — and you the taxpayer. Then they murdered as many of us as they could! The Boston bombing reminds us: • All the gun control in the world is not going to stop a terrorist or a criminal. Gun control would only prevent the law-abiding citizen from getting weapons to defend himself, his home, and his family. • Our wide open borders are a disaster. We cannot allow everyone from around the world to continue to flood into this country. And we need to systematically remove illegal aliens from our country. • We are fools if we continue to give welfare, Food Stamps, scholarships, and other benefits to aliens — legal or illegal. • The death penalty, which was abolished in Massachusetts by the bleeding heart left, is the only just punishment for certain heinous crimes, and it is a travesty that Massachusetts would, if left to themselves, not impose it in this case. Gosnell. Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist and mass murderer, was convicted of murdering three helpless infants and allowing one of his adult patients to die. What Gosnell did was put into our living rooms what the pro-life movement has been unable to do for 40 years. He exposed the reality of abortion. What Gosnell did in secret is done in secret in “clinics” all over the country, including right here in Baton Rouge.

We have allowed these butchers to tear apart, burn, and poison more than 50 million of our most precious possessions — our children. Gosnell reminds us that: • Abortion is murder. • Abortionists and those in their clinics participate in the most evil, vile, and diabolical of activities — the Woody Jenkins killing of babies. IRS. The IRS admitted this week that they have systematically targeted conservatives for harassment and destruction. This is nothing new. The IRS has targeted conservatives under Republican and Democratic administrations for decades. The IRS scandal reminds us: • The IRS should be abolished and a new agency put in its place with an entirely different culture and mentality. Associated Press. The Obama Administration has admitted it secretly seized thousands of phone records of the AP in New York and Washington. Now, finally, the liberal media is squealing! Shouldn’t all of us join together and agree that all of constitutional liberties are essential to a free society? Shouldn’t we all stand up for the right to life in the 14th Amendment, the right to keep and bear arms in the 2nd Amendment, and the freedom of speech and the press in the 1st Amendment? Yes indeed, the left is on the run. What they stand for is a lie, and that is clear for all to see.

Lions Focus Work On Preventable Blindness, Camp For Crippled Kids

BATON ROUGE — Nearly 100 Lions from 15 clubs in the Baton Rouge area gathered for a Lions Expo last Saturday at the BREC headquarters on Florida Boulevard. Here in Louisiana, we also operate the crippled children’s camp in Leesville.” Simon’s eyes begin to sparkle — and sometimes moisten up — as he recalls his many trips, taking handicapped or diabetic children from the Baton Rouge area to summer camp. He recalls the young boy born with no arms. The first morning they wouldn’t play reveille or raise the flag because he hadn’t made his bed. When he realized the problem, he went to his bed and laboriously made his bed, using his feet. That was the beginning of a world of change for that young

100th Anniversary of 1st Graduating Class

Timeless Advice from 1913 Valedictorian A Young Woman Said We Will Build Future Through Hard Work, Courage, Intelligence, And Determination

CENTRAL — In May 1913, Pearl Elizabeth Felps walked to the podium as the valedictorian of the first graduating of the new Central High School, located at the corner of Canal (now Hooper) and Sullivan roads. A copy of her speech was discovered in 2009 and given to the Central City News. It is a timeless message that resonates as well today as it did 100 years ago. She spoke of the importance of hard work, courage, intelligence, and “invincible determination.” Pearl Elizabeth Felps earned her place as Central’s first Valedictorian seven years before women got the right to vote in United States on Aug. 26, 1920. Imagine this young woman rising to the podium in front of the high school at Canal and Sullivan. It was not the busy intersection it is today. Children played in these roads and were known to lay down and take a nap in the street without the slightest fear of a motor car coming along. Horse-drawn buses called “hacks” carried students to school, and people generally walked or rode on horseback wherever they needed to go. On this day, the entire Central community gathered for the graduation ceremonies, and Miss Felps was ready. Here’s what she said:

The boys and girls of today are standing with reluctant feet where the brooks and rivers meet; ready to step out into the busy world, each to seek his vocation in life. We might hold to the past, were it possible, and let our famous men and women of this day and time still carry on the progress of nations. But ever since the dawn of civilization, God has so willed it

behind, some slothful, others diligent and some dropped out entirely. But the race is “not to the strong,” but to the one who labors long and earnestly and trustfully. There is no boy or girl, if he has the element of ability about him, who cannot make some success in life. Where there is a will, there is a way. What has labor done for our grand old America since our first discoverers landed here in such frail and unsafe boats? It has leveled the cliffs to build upon; smoothed the plains and felled the forests; seized disease and throttled its venom. Not only converted it from the desert abode of savages to the beautiful houses of civilization, but has gone down into the bowels of the earth and revealed the wonderful treasures hidden there. It has converted the little unsafe boats of our discoverers into steel ships a thousand feet long, carrying hundreds of passengers. Not only have our oceans been underlaid with cables, but this majestic steamer is outfitted with wireless telegraphy. The railroads and telegraphy bring the ends of the earth together. In 1914, labor will again give to us one of the most wonderful changes in commerce, the completion of the Panama Canal, where the waves of the broad Atlantic will flow to meet those of the deep Pacific. And where will the nation gain her victory? All will answer by labor. It is no doubt true that the boys and girls of today have the advantage of our forefathers, for we have so many models from which to fashion our patterns. But we must remember that one week of life now has almost as much possibility in it as the year had a century ago. We are living in one of the most wonderful ages in the history of the world. There has never been an age when such great things were in the making, and the call is for boys and girls willing to labor in the coming contest. Never before has there been such opportunities for boys and girls, and the boys and girls of today will be the citizens of tomorrow. Let us pick up Daniel Webster’s quotation in his eloquent oration at Bunker Hill: “Let our age be an age of improvement. Let us develop the resources of our land, call forth its powers, build up and promote all of its great interests. Let us extend our ideas over the whole of the vast field in which we are called to act.” See if the greatest men and women that have ever lived cannot be the men and women of tomorrow. Labor is the rainbow of promise to every aspiring youth, and the hope of our world’s greatest nation.

the corporate giant has still produced no public records, as the newspaper requested under state law. The corporation had the contract to administer the City of Central from 2007 to 2010. In January 2013, District Judge Kay Bates ordered CH2MHill to produce documents in connection with the public records case. Yesterday, the judge extended

CH2MHill’s time to produce documents to Aug. 20 and set a pre-trial conference for Sept. 25. Central City News publisher Woody Jenkins said it has been three years since the newspaper made its public records request, which are supposed to provided within five days. The News sued and asked for a trial within 10 days. That trial has never been held. Jenkins said the process makes a mockery of state law.

straight years. Coach Sid won two district titles before becoming Athletic Director for the Central school system. Coach Doug Dotson led the team to two more titles. Then, last season, Coach Sid returned to coaching and won a fifth straight title for the Wildcats. Coach Sid said he was pleased that 110 youngsters showed up for the first day of spring training. Additional students came out after the

end of track season. Central has lost a lot of starters, including All-District MVP Brett Courville, but the athletic program has continued to produce a bevy of outstanding athletes, including a number of underclassmen. One standout who will be absent from tonight’s lineup will be junior Gary Triplett, one of the state’s fastest men. He pulled a hamstring during the finals of the 200-meter dash at the State 5-A championships and had to sit out spring training.
