Republican candidates are vying for support in Iowa. The famous Iowa Straw Poll will be conducted in Ames Aug. 13, 2011.

Bachmann 22%

Cain 10%

Ron Paul Paul Ron 8% 7%

Iowa Poll: Romney, Bachmann Tied WATERLOO — Congresswoman Michele Bachmann announced her candidacy for President on Monday, June 27 in her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa. Just hours before, the first Iowa Poll of the campaign was released

by the prestigious Des Moines Register, and the news couldn’t have been better for the Bachmann campaign. The Iowa Poll had Bachmann and presumptive front-runner Mitt Romney in a virtual dead-heat

among likely Republican caucusgoers. Romney was at 23 percent, Bachmann at 22, Herman Cain at 10, Ron Paul at 7, and Tim Pawlenty at 6. It was a major boost for Bachmann going into the Iowa Straw Poll set for Aug. 13 in Ames.

MAIN STREET — In the offices and cafés along America’s Main Streets and in the Comments sections of thousands of websites, one comes to understand the deep and growing Gov. Rick Perry concern that Americans feel about the future of the country. Among voters who identify themselves as “conservative,” that concern is even greater. In the 2012 election, conservatives will be a demanding constituency who are in no mood for compromise or partial solutions. Here are 12 things conservative voters are looking for in a President in 2012: 1. Honesty and Integrity. Conservatives want public officials who are honest and do what they say. Candidates who are dishonest or who have ethical problems will not be seriously considered. 2. Courage. Conservative voters are looking for a Reagan who See WHAT on Page 13

On-site registration can begin as early as 12 noon on Wednesday, July 14, and several pre-conference events are scheduled that day, S t e v e F o r b e s says it best: “FreedomFest is so good I changed my schedule to attend all three days.” At other conferences, he comes in, gives a speech, autographs a few books, and leaves. Not at FreedomFest. He attends all three days! So does John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Market. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he told me. “Especially the debates!” In fact, Steve Forbes and John Mackey are our official ambassadors. They will be at this year’s event all three days, from the fun opening cocktail party to the gala Saturday night banquet (a Masquerade Ball!). What makes FreedomFest so different? For three glorious days, the “best and the brightest” get together to discuss, debate, and celebrate philosophy, history, geo-politics, science and technology, art and literature, healthy living, music, dance, and religion. We even have a three-day investment conference with your favorite experts. Nobody is bored at FreedomFest! As Milton Friedman said, “FreedomFest is the great place to talk, argue, listen, celebrate the triumphs of liberty, assess the dangers to liberty, and provide that eternal vigilance that is the price of liberty.” This year FreedomFest has seven conferences all in three days:

World Economic Summit

1. Our World Economic Summit and special emergency meeting on Thursday, July 14. We are entering one of the most critical and dangerous periods of economic upheaval in modern history: Millions unemployed, real estate prices still falling, skyrocketing foreclosures, record gold and silver prices, a 10-year bear market on Wall Street, unrest in the Middle East and Europe, and $14 trillion in national debt and still counting. Government is responding by making everything either illegal or

Great Debates at FreedomFest

FreedomFest is famous for challenging your mind with a series of highlighted debates. This year they will include John Mackey (Whole Foods Market) and David Kelley (Atlas Society) on “The Selfishness Debate: Why Self-Interest Alone Isn’t Enough to Create Either Personal Happiness or a Good SociJohn Mackey ety.” Get there early! Dr. Julian Whitaker and Dr. Steven Novella (Yale) on “Vaccines: Good or Bad?” Dan Klein (GMU) and Spencer Pack (Connecticut College) on “Libertarian, Conservative, or Radical Egalitarian: Will the Real Adam Smith Please Stand?” Jacob Hornberger (Future of Freedom Foundation) and Robert G. Kaufman (Pepperdine): “The Bush Doctrine of Aggressive Foreign Policy: Good or Bad for America?” Peter Thiel and George Gilder on “The Future of Technology.” Thomas Jefferson (Bill Barker) and Patrick Henry (Michael O’Dennino) debate the pro’s and con’s of “The U.S. Constitution.” Ben Franklin (Mark Skousen) will moderate. Fun!

mandatory! What should we do? At the World Economic Summit at FreedomFest, we are holding an emergency meeting on July 14 (Bastille Day!) to address the growing fear of chaos in the world economy and the loss of our wealth and our liberties. The speakers’ list at this special emergency meeting at FreedomFest reads like a Who’s Who of the freedom movement. I’ll be joined by the following top experts: • Judge Andrew Napolitano (Fox News libertarian judge) will hold a private VIP luncheon followed by a general session on Do We Even Have a Constitution Anymore? It will bring you up to date on the latest assaults on our liberties and our rights, and what we can do about them. His remarks will be strictly off the record — no recording allowed. Note: Judge Napolitano’s private VIP luncheon will sell out quickly — space is strictly limited: If you want to attend, please call Tami Holland at 1-866-266-5101. • Peter Thiel, co-founder of Pay Pal and early investor in Facebook, now a member of the exclusive Forbes 400 Richest People in America and a staunch libertarian. His topic: Stalled Technology in America: End of the Future? After his talk, he will sit down with futurist George Gilder to debate The Future of Technology. • Steve Forbes on Are We Headed for an American Revolution — or a French Revolution? • John Mackey on Re-Branding Capitalism in the 21st Century and Living Healthy, Wealthy and Wise to 100: The Whole Foods Way. Always standing room only! • All-Star Prediction Panel with Don Luskin, Bert Dohmen, and other experts. Plus Richard Rahn (Cato, Washington Times) and James Gwartney (FSU) on Three Countries Doing it Right: Canada, Chile, and Sweden! “Run, do not walk, to FreedomFest! Where else can you meet and mingle with so many fellow travelers, and create the social bonds that can change the world?” — Mark Mullins, The Fraser Institute I firmly believe you will think and live better as a result of FreedomFest. Thousands have changed their way of acting and thinking — one couple altered their estate and set up a “job-creating” foundation as a result of a session. A consultant landed a major contract with someone he met at our conference. InSee ADVOCATES on Page 3

Exhibit Hall Extraordinaire: The Trade Show of Liberty

2. FreedomFest offers what John Mackey calls the Trade Show for Liberty. Imagine walking into the FreedomFest exhibit hall and seeing together all the major freemarket think tanks and freedom organizations represented. Reason, Cato, Heritage, Mises, FEE, Fraser, ISI, IHS, Students for Liberty, FreedomWorks, American for Prosperity, Heartland, and top freemarket universities such as George Mason University, Hillsdale College, and Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala. It’s like “one-stop shopping for liberty.” Plus bookstores galore — Liberty Fund, ISI Books, Liberty Library, and our own official Laissez Faire Books (offering autograph sessions throughout the conference). Several of these think tanks have their own sessions at FreedomFest, such as the Mises Circle and Reason Day. Top speakers from among exhibiters include David Boaz and Richard Rahn from Cato, Nick Gillespie and Matt Welch from Reason (on their new book Declaration of Independents), Arthur

Eight Republican Presidential Candidates Spoke in New Orleans

GOP Candidates Came Together for Reporter’s Notebook Records Highlights Of Republican Event Woody Jenkins

NEW ORLEANS — The major national media and more than 2,000 delegates packed the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans June 16-18 for the kickoff of the 2012 Republican Presidential nominating process. Eight Presidential candidates and a host of governors, Congressmen, and candidates were on hand to address the crowd. The biggest ovations at the event were reserved for three of the crowd’s favorites — Reps. Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. Bachmann and Paul are announced candidates, while Perry is considering whether to make the race. Bachmann arrived in New Orleans with a lot of momentum, having done well in the New Hampshire Republican debate earlier in the week. Liberty Today filed live news updates on Facebook throughout the three-day conference. Here are some of this reporter’s notes filed during the conference:

Rep. Michele Bachmann Candidate for President Independents, Republicans, Tea Party Members, Defense Advocates, and Libertarians Will Make Barack Obama A One-Term President

Americans will rally together to win a victory in 2012. Republicans, Independents, Tea Party supporters, libertarians, and defense advocates will pull together to make sure Barack Obama is a one-term President.

the Reagan recovery, hundreds of thousands of jobs were created in a few months. But Obama’s economy is in the ditch, she said. “America gives us a chance, an opportunity. I drove a bus. My husband and I did whatever we had to to pay the bills. But Obama is killing opportunities,” she said. The high cost of fuel is one of the things undermining our economy, she said. When Obama was elected, the national debt was $35,000 a person. Today, it’s $43,000 a person. “We have to tell the American people the truth!” “I fought against Obamacare.” “The President has no plan. His

plan for senior citizens is to continue Medicare. We’ll have more people on Medicare but less money. As President of the United States, I will not rest until we repeal Obamacare. The Congressional Budget Office says Obamacare will kill nearly 1 million jobs. Senior citizens can’t wait to vote against this President.” On spending, she cited the statement by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that the greatest threat to national security is the national debt. She said high spending and debt must be brought to an end. She said to look at a dollar bill. “Forty-two percent of every

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann received a rousing ovation and was repeatedly interrupted by applause in her speech to the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans Friday afternoon. Bachmann said Americans will rally together to win a victory in 2012. dollar we spend is owed in debt,” she said. “If I’m president, we’ll never have to vote to raise the national debt again.” “We’ll end the funding of Planned Parenthood and NPR, for starters.” “We know what works. It’s tight spending and fiscal responsibility.” “We’re not going to allow the Federal Reserve to print money. Are you better off today than two years ago?” “Is this Obama growth? No, this is like the grand canyon.” ‘The status quo isn’t working with 10 percent unemployment. And it isn’t working for the Hispanic community or AfricanAmericans, because their unemployment is even higher.” “Earlier today, Russian president Medvedev said the Russian economy should be dominated by private companies. Why can’t our President say that?” “One of the worst agencies is the EPA. Their regulations would propose to tell you everything you are supposed to do — even what light bulbs you use. I can tell you, President Bachmann will allow you to use any light bulb you want!” There was laughter. “As dire as this President has made our economy, I am even more concerned about the state of our military readiness.” “As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am concerned every day by the threats that exist to our nation. I pledge to keep our nation safe, free, and sovereign. I will lead from the front. America is the hope for the world. Every day, terrorists threaten our country. I will win the war on terror. You do not win the war on terror by reading Miranda rights to terrorist suspects. The real threat in the Middle East is a nuclear device in the hands of Iran. Governor of Mississippi The Future of America Will Be at Stake in 2012

Ted Cruz, former solicitor general of the State of Texas and a candidate for the U. S. Senate, told the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans that America is in the fix it’s in because it hasn’t stood for principles. He recounted his fight for constitutional principles during his 10 years’ service as Solicitor General. One of the most important was Texas’ successful battle to prevent the World Court from reopening state murder convictions. That victory came on a 6-3 vote of the U.S. Supreme Court. Second, he said, America must stand up for liberty. Liberty isn’t given by government but by God. The Tea Party is about standing up for the Constitution, he said. Cruz pointed out that Texas has created more jobs than any other state — all because of keeping the size and cost of government small in the State of Texas. Cruz said there is nothing he believes in more than American exceptionalism. Cruz said his father was from Cuba and fought alongside Castro, until he realized Castro was a communist. Cruz’ dad was imprisoned in Castro’s prisons, where he was beaten and mistreated. After his release, he was able to come to the United States and Texas. His father told him, “If we lose our freedom here, where will we go?” Cruz said the only way to preserve freedom is to stand up and fight for it. Cruz said we can turn around America, repeal Obamacare, balance our budget, and retire President Obama. He said every American must decide how to go into battle in 2012. The issue will be which candidate can do the best job of protecting our liberty, whether for President or the United States Senate. Cruz received a loud ovation.

Gov. Haley Barbour

At the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans Friday afternoon, Gov. Haley Barbour told delegates that everywhere he goes, Americans tell him that the 2012 election for President is one we must not lose. “Everything we hold dear is at stake,” Barbour said. “Whether in Louisiana or anywhere else, Obama’s policies have been bad for us. How can we be surprised that the economy is in trouble when the President campaigned on the highest tax increase in history on the backs of American business. How could we expect to have job growth in that environment?” The governor said the Left wants big tax increases and higher spending. “They think it’s good for the economy. The big banks may be making money, but on Main Street they’re not making money. Spending is hurting our economy. The Obama administration has unlimited faith in unlimited government.” “The Obama energy policy has hurt the economy and hurt American business. His policy is to drive up the cost of energy, so there will be less of it. Then there would be less pollution, less global warming. He said he wants energy prices to skyrocket. It looks to me that Obama’s policy of driving up the price of energy is the only one that’s working. We see the results on the American economy, because everything in our economy runs on energy.” Barbour hit Obamacare. “It’s costing jobs. Business isn’t hiring. One reason is the cost of health insurance on each new employee hired. This is not what people were talking about when it came to reforming health care. If we let the American people choose between the failed Obama policies and our free market, conservative alternative, we will be victorious.” Barbour said Republicans should unite in 2012. “We won’t have the perfect candidate, but our candidate will be infinitely better than the current administration.” He said Obama is praying the Tea Party will become a 3rd party, because then he can’t lose.

Dave Bossie, former chief investigator of Congress and the president of Citizens United, said Obama plans to raise $1 billion for his reelection campaign. He said he wants every American to have a place at the table and a place in the Republican Party. Gingrich emphasized that our rights come from God, not government. He said Americans have the right to pursue happiness. But we are not guaranteed happiness. “There is no federal right to happiness, no federal department of happiness,” he said. He said our founders believed we would remain free if we were wise. “What kind of Americans are we?” he asked. Obama wants to borrow to give to Brazilians, he said. That will change under his Presidency. At present, America is in debt to the Chinese but gives money to Brazil. Gingrich said he wants to cut federal spending and federal taxes. He wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent and abolish the capital gains tax and the death tax. He wants to audit the Federal Reserve and find out what it is really doing. “We should tell the Federal Reserve that your job is to protect the value of the dollar, not manipulate the economy,” he said. At the opening session of the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee recalled the experiences of Katrina and equated them to the current time. “That was the worst of times and the best of times,” he said. But despite worries over the econ-

omy and the Obama administration, there is great opportunity for America. He said major reforms are possible, just as welfare reform made a fundamental change in America in the 1990’s. He decried federal bailouts and other attempts by the federal government to pick winners and losers. Huckabee joked that Republicans can’t talk about missing birth certificates. But, turning serious, he said there are 53 million missing birth certificates — one for each of the children killed by abortion since 1973. “God gave us life, and we cannot walk away from that issue. Every human being has worth and value,” he said. “Today we Republicans have the opportunity to take the total message to the people.” On the economy, Huckabee said, “We have a President who doesn’t understand the fundamentals of the economy.” He said the only place where the economy is growing is Washington, DC. “But what we’re growing there is the wrong stuff!” He said, “We don’t have a health

What we do have is a health crisis, which is a result of chronic disease.” “It is the cost of these diseases that is eating us alive.” “If this country sets its mind to it, we can find the cures that will reduce the cost of medical care.” Huckabee said Republicans must communicate with the people in such a way that they will be understood and received by the average person. People with a political perspective see things as left and right, but a small portion of the public see things differently and they will decide most elections. They see things more as who will make things go up or down. Speaking of independent voters, he said, “We have to appeal to those citizens. We need to make sure every American understands what we stand for.”

Conference Thursday night that conservatives should not let President Obama off the hook in the 2012 elections. He said the key message is that Obama “has made things worse.” Joseph said conservatives can have a major advantage in technology in the 2012 elections. The key will be using technology to identify conservative voters and encouraging them to get to polls on election day.

Our prosperity is from the private sector, not the public sector. Our truths are self-evident. How do we apply them today?” “In Washington, the era of Big Government is not over, but it is imploding. And changes will be made. We have seen democratization of the economy. Yet, out of Washington, we see the same tired solutions.” “You cannot put our economy under the crushing ruins of the welfare state. In the age of globalization, we cannot survive under isolationism. In the Middle East, in the fight against terrorism, we must always stand with our ally, Israel. The goal is not only security but also peace” “To prevent a nuclear-armed Iran, we must support democratic movements in the Middle East, es-

pecially the Green Revolution in Iran. It will fall from its people’s own aspirations for freedom.” “It is not only the Middle East that threatens us. Also Castro, Chavez, and other dictators. We believe liberty is the foundation for prosperity. We must end the unconditional appeasement of Communist China. For those who say Communist China is the future, I refute that as we did when Khrushchev said ‘We will bury you!’” “We must hold to family values, for that is the basis of security and freedom. The big government, onesize-fits-all philosophy must never be allowed to take hold. We must unleash the new technology to support the future of our country.”

essential. President Bush was subjected to shrill and nasty attacks. We must not resort to that. What President Obama thinks is best for America is wrong. “I don’t question where he’s from, but I do question where he’s going. He ran one of the best campaigns we’ve ever seen. But any doubts have been erased. He is easily the most liberal President in history.” The choice is clear, he said, and we must not go down the road that he is taking us. Marco Rubio said it well: We should not be implementing policies of countries whose citizens have fled in order to come to this nation. Government should make it easier for the private sector to create jobs. The President has grown our debt from $9 to $14 trillion. Yet, despite his failures, he is asking for four more years. But we will not choose to go down the road of European socialism. The President said if we don’t raise the debt, we will have a national crisis. We have a national crisis already. His solution to our national debt is to raise it higher. “What should we do about the national debt? For one thing, stop the spending. If your teenager puts $6,000 on your credit card, you don’t solve the problem by giving him another credit card! We must control spending. We need a Balanced Budget Amendment.”

New York Senate Action on Gay Marriage

Tony Perkins

President, Family Research Council

NEW YORK C ITY — People at the Empire State Building said it was a coincidence. Officials explained that it takes hours to change the lights. But there was no mistaking the message Friday night when the highest point in the city lit up like a towering rainbow, its colors blazing across the New York skyline. Like a warning flare, the reds and blues and greens exploded over the city, announcing the arrival of same-sex “marriage” to the world. Overnight, New York had become a beacon in the fight for family — a symbol of people who had lost their way! When the law goes into effect next month, New York will be the sixth and largest state to shatter the definition of marriage in America. With one vote, New York forced more Americans to bow to its twisted definition of marriage than the combined population of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa, and the District of Columbia. And none of it would have been possible without the political cowardice of New York Republicans. The same party who beat back this attack in 2009 not only gave up on marriage in the majority, but actively worked to redefine it two years later. The decision by four Republicans to join 29 Democrats in passing the measure marked the first time in history that a legislative body controlled by the GOP approved either same-sex “marriage” or civil unions. “If a gay marriage bill passes,” state Senators Ruben Diaz and Michael Long had warned, “It will be because the GOP caved for no discernible good reason at all, and Republicans across the state will pay the price.” In the weeks ahead, our country will learn how deep the coercion runs. This illusion of Republican support for same-sex “marriage” all boils down to two things: money and intimidation. Behind the scenes, liberals found a way to undercut the Republican platform on marriage, and there is no question that those “incentives” (some of them taxpayer-funded) will be exposed. In exchange for their votes, senators have been promised billionaire backing in the next election. Unfortunately for them, no amount of campaign financing can protect Republicans from the voters—many of whom will be waiting to unleash their fury on the GOP after this collapse. After all, part of the reason that New York’s Senate flipped to Republican control was because of the Democrats’ push for same-sex “marriage.” In fact, three of the four Republicans who put this bill over the edge had openly campaigned against it. If donors can’t get their money back, then they should fight to get their seats back. And FRC Action PAC will help. I think we can all agree that the issue of marriage should be decided by people whose influence can’t be bought. Edmund Burke famously observed that evil triumphs when good men do nothing. But if there’s anything worse than good men doing nothing, it’s good men saying nothing. On Capitol Hill and in districts across America, the Republican Party seems to have lost its

voice. Only Michele Bachmann has been bold enough to speak out on behalf of the millions of New Yorkers who still believe in marriage. Talking to Fox News Sunday, the Minnesota Congresswoman said that if she were elected President, she would back an amendment to define marriage as “between a man and a woman.” She was clear that the issue should be “up to the people of New York” and put on the ballot for a vote. While others in the presidential pool may be scared silent, Michele, alongside former Senator Rick Santorum, refuses to be intimidated. This weekend, Catholic Bishop Nicholas Dimarzio drew a new line in sand. “In light of these disturbing developments...” he said, “I have asked all Catholic schools to refuse any distinction or honors bestowed upon them this year by the governor or any member of the legislature

Part of the reason that New York’s Senate flipped to Republican control was because of the Democrats’ push for same-sex ‘marriage. In fact, three of the four Republicans who put this bill over the edge openly campaigned against it. This issue should be decided by the people.

who voted to support this legislation. Furthermore, I have asked all pastors and principals to not invite any state legislator to speak or be present at any parish or school celebration... The governor and state legislature have demonized people of faith, whether they be Muslims, Jews, or Christians, and identified them as bigots and prejudiced, and voted in favor of same-sex ‘marriage.’” “We just as strongly affirm that marriage is the joining of one man and one woman in a lifelong, loving union... This definition cannot change.” Despite all of the disappointment, God is on the move. Regardless of how things appear, never doubt that He is at work behind the scenes. Rainbow colors may cut through the New York night, but shadows are where you and I are called to shine. The world takes advantage of the darkness, but only the church can set it ablaze. “Arise... for your light has come... See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and His glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” (Isaiah 60:1-3)

Editor’s Note: 29 Republicans voted against the gay marriage bill. Only four voted for it.

Why a New Newspaper in the Digital Age? The hype about the “Digital Age” can be misleading. Consider these four facts: • The average Republican voter in America is 58. • The average donor to Republican candidates is 70+. • The average donor to conservative causes is also 70+. • The majority of them are not on the Internet. Only 26 percent of all Americans 65+ have Internet service. Because of the 72 million baby boomers (born from 1946 to 1964), America’s population — and America’s conservatives — will be aging for the next 20 years! The fact is, they could be scouring the millions of websites on the Internet and getting all the information they need about elected officials and causes, but very few of them are. They want a newspaper to hold in their hands that puts together in one place the information they need. But they haven’t had that newspaper... until now.

12 Essentials Conservatives Expect in 2012

What Conservatives Want in a President Continued from Page 1

will stand up to the nation’s enemies, take out terrorists, and face down political opponents in Congress. It’s about having the courage of your convictions and taking a firm position on the things that are really important. 3. Patriotism and Love of Country. Conservatives want a President who is patriotic, who loves America, who is proud of our heritage, our history, and our system of government. They want someone who will speak up for our country anywhere in the world and not apologize for America. 4. Support for the Constitution. Conservatives see the Constitution as under attack and in danger of being usurped. They want a President who will respect the Constitution and uphold it. Of particular interest today is the 10th amendment. Conservatives want a President who understands the role of the states in our federal system. 5. Respect for Individual Rights. As government has gotten bigger and more powerful, conservatives have come to see their individual liberties as under attack, including the right to speak freely or express their religious views publicy, own a firearm, or even get on an airplane. The overreaching arm of the federal government seems to be everywhere, and conservatives want a President who will stop the erosion of individual liberties and put restraints on the federal government. 6. Traditional Values. Conservatives see the family and their traditional way of life as endangered, even things as seemingly straightforward as the right of people to pray in public, the right of babies to be born, and the fact that a marriage is between a man and a woman. Conservatives will demand that a President stand squarely for traditional family values. That includes public prayer, the right to life, and traditional marriage. 7. Protection of American Sovereignty and an End to Illegal

Woody Jenkins Editor, Liberty Today

Immigration. The flood of illegal aliens into the country is of deep concern to most conservatives. The media asks the rhetorical question, Well, what are you going to do, deport them all? Conservatives generally say, yes, as many as you can as fast as you can! They will demand a President who will seal the border and start sending illegals back home. Similarly, conservatives want a President who will respect the sovereignty of the country and refuse to turn over America’s military, our resources, or our law to international organizations or other countries. 8. A Strong National Defense. Conservatives support adequate spending for defense, advanced weapons systems, and higher pay for the military. They are patriotic and are willing to bear a heavy burden to defend the country. They expect our nation to stand up against our foreign enemies and stop them before they threaten us. This applies to the danger from terrorists and from terrorist states such as Iran, Syria, and North Korea. At

the same time, conservatives question overextending our military, and they oppose military operations where they do not see our national interests at stake. Ultimately, conservatives will look for a candidate they feel they can trust to keep our nation strong, while having the judgment to know when to commit U.S. military forces or strike a blow against terrorists or terrorist states. 9. Fiscal Responsibility. Conservatives are opposed to deficit spending and continued increases in the national debt. They want a President who will limit spending, balance the federal budget, and put a lid on the debt. In order to satisfy conservatives, a President must be willing to confront the reality of our fiscal crisis and make hard choices to cut, despite the enormous pressure that will come from the media, labor unions, and countless special interest groups. Conservatives believe that our nation is doomed unless we stop the reckless spending. 10. Tax Limitation. Conservatives believe the country is overtaxed and that small business is particularly overtaxed. They want a President who will oppose additional taxes and try to reduce taxes in every responsible way. Most conservatives favor fundamental reforms in the tax system. 11. Free Enterprise. Conservatives believe in the free market and want to limit government involvement in the economy. They are opposed to overregulation by the federal government with its alphabet soup of regulatory agencies. They want to keep most regulation at the state and local levels. They oppose mandates such as Obamacare and the endless flow of edicts from the EPA, the FDA, and the others. A fervent commitment to repeal Obamacare is a necessity for any candidate who hopes to reach conservatives. 12. Fair Trade. For the past generation, most conservatives supported the nation’s free trade policies. Today that has changed, especially with respect to Communist

China. The lack of import duties on state-owned Chinese companies, often the property of the Peoples Army, has led to the destruction of America’s manufacturing base and the export of millions of jobs. At least that’s how most conservatives see things now. The argument that Americans enjoy a lower cost of living because of Chinese imports only worked as long as Americans had jobs. Today conservatives want a President who will end the onesided “free trade” arrangement with Communist China. HHH During the days of President Ronald Reagan, conservatives spoke of the three-legged stool that composed the conservative movements — social conservatives, economic conservatives, and defense conservatives. Today Gov. Rick Perry speaks in opposition to any idea that there would be a divide between social and economic conservatives. Rep. Michele Bachmann speaks of bringing together a coalition of social conservatives, economic conservatives, defense conservatives, Tea Party members, and libertarians — perhaps the first-ever embrace of libertarians by a conservative candidate for President. The truth is that few voters fall neatly into those subcategories. Most people who call themselves “conservatives” are conservative on a broad range of issues. A greater reality in the Republican primaries across the country is the explosion of social conservatives, mainly Christian activists, especially female, who have aligned themselves with the Republican Party. The activist workers who walk door to door for Republicans are more often than not the pro-lifers, homeschoolers, and Tea Party members. The country club Republican Party is a thing of past, and the coming nominating process could well produce a nominee who is solid on all 12 of the essentials conservatives expect in a candidate for President.

What Liberty Today Readers Want in a President Highlights of an On-Line Survey

Chuck Riley: OUR next President must realize the uniqueness and reasoning for the Foundation of THIS Nation. A Nation designed to be an alternative to other countries that put government and entitlements BEFORE the ‘best interest of the people’. Our NEXT President should be proven, historically to be committed to God, Family, and Country FIRST AND FOREMOST before party affiliation and political agenda! June 24 at 1:52pm Joshua Mickley: Must be Constitutional-minded with a calling to defend personal rights. Also must support free-market principles of low taxes, low govt. spending, and very little government welfare assistance. June 24 at 1:52pm Sherry Taylor Schlereth: I want someone who has never run for President before. What the Tea Party Wants

The Demand for a Patriot President

The Candidate Must Stand Unwaveringly For High Principles With Record to Match Laura O’Halloran

Louisiana Tea Party Federation

Americans have had enough. Enough from the Left, and enough from the Right acting like the Left. The members of the Tea Party movement refuse to stand in the middle. The traditional politics of the Establishment have steered us onto a dark and rocky path with top-down management. As the grassroots has mobilized from bottom-up, we will push forward to take America back in 2012! A few good candidates promoted by the Tea Parties have emerged to take the lead in an already-heated race for the White House, and a few more who qualify still have yet to decide. Each of these true conservatives possesses personal strengths which we will need to see in our next President. Tea Party Stands for Principle The Tea Party movement is not about just voting out the Democrats. There are larger evils to conquer. Our movement has every intention to swing the pendulum back in order to achieve our mission — a second American Revolution. Obviously, a peaceful revolution that puts us back on the path of our Founders. We hold the far Left in contempt for purposely exploiting the American core values that our founding fathers intended for us as a sovereign nation. The far Left does not include just Barrack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, although they have been central to the duplicitous acts against the people. There are efforts on a global scale that must be dealt with. We begin with the three core values of the Tea Party Movement which our next President and Vice President must work to accomplish: 1. Fiscal Responsibility. It must be in their blood to cap the debt and drive it down, while working with Congress to bring excessive spending and taxation under control. They must also pledge to avoid corporate welfare and supply a balanced, transparent, and accountable budget. 2. Constitutionally Limited Government. Our President and Vice President must be leaders in restoring the Constitution and limited government. That includes reversing government’s use of regulation which has encroached upon the powers of our state and local

governments. Within the rule of law, they must also protect the liberties of individuals. 3. Free Markets. The President will be expected to protect the fundamentals of the free market. This includes limiting government’s role in the private sector in order to instill personal responsibility and make accessible the pursuit of economic liberty for all Americans. Who will be our next ‘Ronald Reagan? In addition to our core values, the Tea Party expects a conservative ticket to take the lead in restoring America — economically, socially, militarily, and spiritually. It must lead us back onto the path from which we have strayed. In the search for a conservative ticket, The Tea Party wants Reagan to be the benchmark in weighing the attributes of an All-American president. Reagan is the model as far as most Tea Parties are concerned. But we need to take it to a whole new level. Is Their Record Consistent with Our Mission? No longer does the “R” after the name of a candidate indicate where the candidate stands. The Tea Party demands a proven conservative voting record and/or a history of achievement to fully believe they support the mission of the Tea Party. In order to restore America’s greatness, the 2012 ticket should don a team of unwavering, unapologetic, and resolute candidates that will hold America’s sovereignty and liberties in the highest regard while protecting and promoting the Constitution of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights. The boldness of the next two Presidents must exceed any Socialist, Communist, Marxist, or Islamic ideology and work to keep those influences out of our financial systems, education systems, media, and judicial systems, as well as all levels of government. America was established to set itself apart from those types of oppressive powers and to carefully expand freedom to all of those wanting it and willing to pursue it as a human right. Self-Reliance, Courage, and Action One cannot neglect a flower garden and then expect it to stay healthy. It will grow wild. The responsibility of maintenance, which includes weeding, watering, fertilizing, and pest control, must be done in order to produce successful results. This will mean taking a full inventory and all-out spring cleaning of each level of government as well as the amendments to our Constitution. In other words, our President and Vice President must both be willing to do what it takes to become the botanists our country needs for the total patriot landscaping package. Gov. Sarah Palin. Some believe that Gov. Palin would be good in this

regard, as she is known to have cleaned out much of the corruption upon entering office in her state of Alaska. She promotes American self-reliance as she has demonstrated knowledge of the oil industry and encourages America to “drill, baby, drill!” Although not an official candidate, she is being encouraged by many in the Tea Party because of her resilient conservative stance on issues despite the fierce animosity from the mainstream media and Leftist organizations. She is also a solid proponent of 2nd Amendment rights. Gov. Chris Christi is also an encouraged favorite as he has Laura O’Halloran demonstrated a Tea Party Activist no-nonsense style and a talent for taking on the unions in New Jersey in a bold manner never done before. He is an audacious hero in taking on the media, as well as challengers who question his willingness to get his state out of an abyss of economic troubles. Rep. Michelle Bachmann is a selfmotivated leader who gets things done. She created the Tea Party Caucus in the House and continues to protect the Constitution with her unswerving voting record and unapologetic support of conservative and Christian values. Sen. Jim DeMint has earned the labels “Tea Party Senator,” and “Conservative of the Year” by Erick Erickson of RedState.com, as he has proven to be a fierce defender of freedom and constitutional values. As of now, he will not run, but is reconsidering. Many Tea Party supporters favor candidate Herman Cain because he has never served in public office. It is not in his blood to dish out the same ol’ political song and dance in addressing the issues. As a well-known business leader, mathematician, and talk show host, he, like Palin, would be able to create an American self-reliance by abolishing the IRS. He is even forward thinking enough to want to eliminate all federal income-based taxes for Americans and their businesses by replacing it with a revenue neutral strategy. He has kept his support base within the Tea Party movement and has moved into the spotlight rapidly with his “Common Sense Solutions” campaign that will seek fiscal responsibility and promote the free markets. What is a Patriot’s Military Might? The job description of the President of the United States includes the title of Commander In Chief. Deploying our troops and managing our defense forces requires strategic skills, wisdom,

respect, and integrity. The Commander in Chief will need to lead from the front and be willing to stand for our soldiers as he or she recognizes the sacrifices they and their families are making to protect our country. Lt. Col. Allen West has been urged to run for President, and he has established himself as a knowledgeable leader who has gained the honor and respect of Tea Party members. So far, West is the one in the spotlight who has shown a zero-tolerance defense policy for our military forces in combating terrorism. Many more can be mentioned, but the point is we do not lack examples of boldness for the type of President we need to restore our country. We want the next leader of the free world to feel the angst and frustration we feel at the grassroots, and feel compelled to act upon what his heart tells him must be accomplished, regardless of opposition. Patriots Demand Trailblazers The Tea Party demands a President and Vice President who are trailblazers, not afraid to try new ideas and be innovative in solving specific domestic issues we are desperately facing, such as our economy, immigration, healthcare, and so forth. Rhetoric is no longer acceptable. Operation Backbone Terrorism brings us to the issue of illegal immigration. Arizona passed their SB 1070 in an attempt to enforce federal law in order to protect themselves from the criminals in our country illegally. The ideal president supported by the Tea Parties will not only encourage such legislation, but help protect all Americans by working to secure our borders instead of suing the states to protect the illegal aliens. Operation Wetback in the 1950’s ordered mass deportations of illegal aliens during times when there were a lack of jobs. Presidents Truman and Eisenhower were looking out for Americans and not selling them out for political gain. Again: Boldness, integrity, unapologetic. Patriots to Put Principle First As Chief Executive, Chief of State, and Chief Diplomat, any of these conservatives would symbolize what America stands for as a nation. Holding steadfast to Christian principles, they would honestly represent most of us among the Tea Party. Such a leader would respect our allies and recognize the importance of Israel. Such a President would be able to negotiate effectively in the context of a solid foreign policy and be an inspiration around the world. The President must be trustworthy, making relevant and substantial decisions by appointing the most qualified advisors for the President’s Cabinet. Most importantly, he would appoint members of the Supreme Court who uphold the Constitution and interpret, rather than invent, the law. The President and Vice President must be Americans by birth and qualified. They must hold fundamental Christian values as our founders intended. Reagan said himself, “If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.” Eating an Elephant It is time to find the “Ronald Reagan” that will unite instead of divide, respect the states and their rights, and boost the morale of the country and those who work to sustain it. We will see the day that America will climb out of the hole we are in, but it will require the Tea Party movement to show how conservatism works and how to get it accomplished. You know the saying about how to eat an elephant: One bite at a time. It will require education and dedication from each generation to accomplish the task, and everyone involved will need to step up to make sure that no one forgets the day when we came close to losing our country.

ICE Memo Attempts Amnesty for Illegals WASHINGTON — A memo by John Morton, the Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), could effectively open the U.S. border to a tidal wave of illegal immigration. The memo gives ICE officials and prosecutors wide latitude to ignore the fact that a person is illegally in the United States — if the person is a student, high school school graduate, elderly, has family

in the U.S., has medical problems, not too long a criminal history, if they are the primary caregiver to a person who is a minor, if they are pregnant or nursing, if they are cooperative with ICE, or if they meet a number of other specific conditions. The memo is actually more far-reaching than the Dream Act, which has been repeatedly rejected by Congress. HHH

The Associated Press reports that a stateowned oil company from China is offering to finance a pipeline to deliver oil from Alberta to the Pacific, so it can be shipped to China. An analysis of Administration statements shows the U.S. did not act alone in this decision but that it was done in conjunction with other “producing” and “consuming” nations. Is this Administration now giving other governments a say in the petroleum reserves of this country?
