A MESSAGE from the DEAN

Dear Friends,

It’s important to keep in mind the values that make our school unique and how they set us apart.

The integration of our Christian worldview into counseling, social work, and psychology in both theory and practice is essential to our teachings. Having the knowledge to be a professional in the field is helpful, but that alone is inferior to a professional filled with the Holy Spirit who demonstrates love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Oswald Chambers reminds us in My Utmost for His Highest that “The expression of Christian character isn’t good-doing, it’s God-likeness. If the Spirit of God has transformed you on the inside, then on the outside you will display divine characteristics, not human characteristics. God’s life in us expresses itself as God’s life, not as human life trying to be godly. The secret of being Christian is that the supernatural is made natural in us by the grace of God.”

Whether you are a student, faculty or staff member, or a loved one of someone at our university, remember to integrate your faith into everything you do so that you can be a light for Christ.

Selah,

PROGRAM UPDATES

School of Behavioral Sciences

We are proud to announce that the Master of Social Work (MSW) program received full accreditation in March 2024 and has officially launched its advanced standing program. The MSW program’s fall enrollment was marked with significant growth, and our new student count doubled in size. Both the MSW and Bachelor of Science in Social Work program are now fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) through 2032.

Additionally, all current Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited programs have successfully received reaffirmation through 2032. The CACREP board awarded a full 8-year accreditation for all of Liberty’s graduate counseling programs. This denotes full compliance with all applicable accreditation standards and policies.

Abba Scholars

Many college students are on their own for the first time and learning how to navigate finances, relationships, and more. For most students, mom and dad provide guidance and funds to help them navigate all the difficulties of college life. However, some young people are left to jump into college without parental support. Students who have been in foster care often fall into this category.

Virginia has the highest number of youths who have left foster care without being reunited with their biological parents or being adopted in all 50 states (Seaton, 2022). In other words, Virginia has the highest number of youths who have “aged out” of foster care. Only 3-4% of young adults who age out of foster care graduate from college (Mowreader, 2024). To help bridge this gap, Liberty created the Abba Scholars program.

In May 2023, I was hired as the director of the Abba Scholars program. I was tasked with identifying prospective students, helping them apply, connecting them to scholarship opportunities, and offering support once they were enrolled at Liberty University. The program was officially launched in Fall 2024. The program currently supports 1 online student and 2 residential students. Both residential students were able to receive full scholarships to Liberty University. We’ve also been able to provide textbooks, a computer, and other resources through the program. Personally, I’ve also had the privilege of mentoring and encouraging these students.

The vision for the Abba Scholars program was set by a donor who had been a foster parent himself. His goal was to help former foster youth attend Liberty when they otherwise may not have been able to. It was named the Abba Scholars program as a testament to God’s heart for adoption — in Aramaic, the word “abba” is a personal and affectionate name for father, like the English word “dad.” As a Good Father, God has adopted each believer into His family, offering blessings of mercy and grace. This changes everything for His adopted children.

Just as God adopted us as spiritual orphans, He makes it clear throughout Scripture that He has a special place in His heart for earthly orphans. He invites His followers to join Him in this pursuit. What better testament to Christ than to be a Christian university that embodies this love!

The Abba Scholars program is the bridge between demonstrating God’s compassion for orphans and the logistics of supporting youth who have aged out of foster care as we adopt them into the Liberty family.

If you’re wondering how you can support this program, here are a few ways you can help:

• Spread the word about our program and became an ambassador for orphan care.

• Join the Abba Scholars Committee and aid students with their needs as they arise, such as transportation, funds for personal items, and housing during school breaks.

• Donate to the scholarship fund — whether it’s $5 or $500, your donation is appreciated.

• Pray that the Abba Scholar students thrive, feel supported, and come to know God as their Abba Father.

Licensed Professional Counselors Day at the Capitol

As a practicing counseling professor, it is essential that those I teach, supervise, and train understand the broader scope of our responsibilities as counselors — advocacy and building relationships with lawmakers is crucial. Our role extends far beyond client sessions; it includes advocating for the individuals we serve and pushing for necessary changes in mental health access. We must aim to eliminate barriers to care.

I am an associate professor in the Center for Counseling & Family Studies here at Liberty, as well as a board member and presidentelect for the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia (LPCA). I am proud to assist LPCA in the planning and execution of Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Day at the Capitol in Atlanta, Ga., during LPC Week. This event serves as the centerpiece of our advocacy efforts, drawing significant

attention and participation. We organized a variety of workshops and networking events, providing valuable opportunities for professional development and community building.

During our time at the Capitol, I and my fellow board members engaged in critical conversations with lawmakers and other key stakeholders about the role and impact LPCs have on the mental health field. We discussed what LPCs do and the essential services they offer, as well as advocating for legislative support aimed at reducing the barriers LPCs face when providing care. We highlighted the vital role LPCs play within their profession, pushing for the standardization of education requirements to uphold those standards.

In addition to these advocacy efforts, our activities at the Capitol included various interactive sessions designed to foster a deeper understanding among lawmakers and constituents about the critical nature of mental health services provided by LPCs. We held workshops that highlighted best practices in mental health care, innovative approaches to counseling, and the pressing need for policy reform. Overall, LPC Day at the Capitol was not just a highlight of LPC Week but a testament to our commitment to advancing the profession and enhancing the mental health landscape for everyone.
