his magazine was my final project for my photography class. of course, it was in spanish and only with pictures taken here in the Dominican Republic, also the name of the magazine was ‘‘Travesía’’ (crossing) In english.
A MESSAGE FOR YOU The theme was about the scouts in the Dominican Republic, so here you will find pictures of my troop (88), how we do our reunions, our hikes and our camps. Also I added some of our 100 Years Jamboree that was held in november last year in San Pedro de Macorís. You will learn about how we work, starting from Manada (Cubs), Tropa (Scouts), Caminantes (Explorers) and Clan (Rovers). I wanted to put this because when I was at cherokee a lot of Staff members, Scoutmasters and the kids asked me about wich rank I was. With this, I hope you understand how we are organized. I decided to make an english version because when I published ‘‘Travesía’’, Mama Sue asked me if she could get some copies to display at cherokee, so I thought it was a good Idea to make this so the scouts at cherokee could learn more about scouting in the Dominican Republic. I Can’t wait to go back to Cherokee, to live that amazing experience again with the amazing people I met in that 2014 summer. Thanks Leidy González, Lisa Cristiano, Papa Neil, The Asociación de Scouts Dominicanos, Mama Sue, Staff members, All of the amazing kids and scoutmasters I met and of course the man who hired me, Colin Lemon. If it were not for you I would not have had the best summer of my life

Cub Scout is a participant in the Cub Scout training program operated by many Scouting organizations for young persons, mainly boys aged about 7 to 11.
In some organizations they are known by their original name of Wolf Cubs or simply as Cubs. The program is often referred to simply as Cubbing. Originally the Cubs program was open only to boys; girls were expected to join the Brownies. Since about 1990 the Cubs has been open to both girls and boys in several countries, but in the United

Cub Scouts Prayer Sweet and good Sir , teach me to be humble and kind, to imitate your example, to love you with all my heart , and to follow the path I will take with you. Amen.

The Wolf Cub scheme was started by The Boy Scouts Association in 1914, seven years after the foundation of the Boy Scouts, in order to cater to the many younger boys who were too young to be Boy Scouts but who wanted to be associated with Scouting. In 1914, there were articles in the Headquarters Gazette (a then regular journal for leaders) outlining official “Junior Scout” then “Wolf Cub” schemes. However, Robert
Baden-Powell wanted something quite different from a watered down Boy Scout program and recognized that too close an association between the junior program and the Boy Scouts would detract from both. Baden-Powell wanted a junior scheme with distinct name, uniform and other identity and program. In 1914 Baden Powell announced a junior section for Scouting. In 1916, he published his own outlines for such a scheme, it was to be called
Wolf Cubbing. It has been speculated that Baden-Powell may have had a number of reasons to call this section Wolf Cubs. Wolf was one of the ranks some Native American tribes gave to their best scouts; Wolf was the name of the cannon made in the railway workshops at Mafeking. So a young boy not old enough to be a wolf or true Scout could be a baby wolf or Wolf Cub.

A Scout learns the cornerstones of the Scout method, Scout Promise, and Scout Law. These are designed to instill character, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership in boys through a structured program of outdoor activities. Common ways to implement the Scout method include spending time together in small groups with shared experiences, rituals, and activities, as well as emphasizing good citizenship and decision-making that are age-level appropriate. Cultivating a love and appreciation of the outdoors and outdoor activities are key elements.
Primary activities include camping, woodcraft, first aid, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports. The troop is the fundamental unit of the Scouts. This is the group a Scout joins and via which he participates in Scouting activities, such as camping, backpacking, and canoeing. The troop leadership, youth and adult, organizes and provides support for these activities. It may include as few as a half-dozen Scouts, or as many as seventy or more. Troops usually meet weekly.

Rovering provides enjoyable activities that combine personal development with meaningful service. A Rover Crew governs itself, but often has an older adult as a “Crew Advisor” or “Rover Scout Leader”. Baden-Powell called it a “brotherhood of open air and service”.
The objectives of Rovering are to: -Provide service to the Scout Movement -Provide service to the community -Develop as individuals by expanding one’s range of skills -Enjoy fellowship, social, outdoor, and cultural activities
Rovering provides an experience that leads to a life enriched in the following ways: -Character and Intelligence -Handicraft and Skill -Health and Strength -Service for Others -Citizenship -Each of these elements, from character through service, finds expression in the crew’s activities. “Rover Scouting is a preparation for life, and also a pursuit for life.” —Baden-Powell, 1928

T
he Scout uniform is a widely recognized characteristic of Scouting.
In the words of Baden-Powell at the 1937 World Jamboree, it “hides all differences of social standing in a country and makes for equality; but, more important still, it covers differences of country and race and creed, and makes all feel that they are members with one another of the one great brotherhood”. Uniform shirts are now frequently blue, orange, red or green and shorts are frequently replaced by long trousers all year or only under cold weather.
The Dominican Uniform is a light blue shirt. With the national flag, the national membership badge, the World membership badge (the group number, city and region badges will vary), a Neckerchief and a pair of Long dark navy blue Pants. The highest rank was formerly the Scout Enriquillo, named for a Taíno cacique who rebelled against the Spaniards in the 16th century. The membership badge of the Asociación de Scouts Dominicanos incorporates elements of the flag of the Dominican Republic. We Love to wear the neckerchief all the time, that´s what makes every group different. In my case, My group is the 88, Magua Region, San Francisco de Macoris. Our colors are Yellow representing the sun, Wine Red representing the cocoa and Black representing the Night.

his past year we held our Centenary National Camp at San Pedro de Macor铆s. This City was where the movement began in the country, amid reports that arrived through the port of San Pedro de Macoris. For this reason, a group of 28 young chaired by Professor Ra煤l Francisco Aybar (Pancholo), made the first Scout outing held in the country in December 1914, implementing the Scout Method. In 1916, Scouts activities were suspended due to the American intervention in the country. For 1923 Professor Sergio Augusto Beras Morales, who was Director of Department of Education, with support from the British Consul in San Pedro de Macoris, Rev. AH Epicospal Beer, forms the first Scout group. In 1926, the movement had grown up in that city, forming the Scouts in San Pedro de Macoris. Eventually groups were formed in cities such as

MAMA SUE
First I have to thank this woman and that’s why there’s a whole section for her in this magazine. She was the one who always was asking if I had all the necesary stuff at camp, since I saw her in the airport the day I arrived NC I knew she was gonna be one of the nicest and lovely persons ever, even when she didn’t noticed because I was really shy. She took me to Waffle House, my first dinner in the United States of America, and then when we got to the house and I met her 4 dalmatians. One day She invited me to go to a flag ceremony with her in a farm and, of course, I accepted, besides, I wanted to share more with her and to get to know new places. While I was at camp, she was always asking If I had enough food, If I was having fun, there’s one time I asked her for Rice Krispie treats and guess what, when I got into my tent, there were 3 full boxes of them. Another time I asked for a razor because I needed to shave and guess what? She brought me a razorshaving gel with a pack of razor blades. I LOVED that she was always making sure that I was alright. She also sew the new Patches I got for my shirt. And Had to tell, one day we went to have dinner at Cracker Barrel, another day we went to a mexican restaurant and the days we couldn’t go out, she cooked an amazing and delicious cucumber recipe.
I’m really thankful for everything you’ve done for me, For me you’re a Hero, all of the things you do, all of the things you’ve done, It just makes me think ‘‘WOW, WHAT A WOMAN’’. You always care about the important people in your life, even the people that you don’t know because you help strangers everyday at the hospital you work on. You help at the Cherokee Scout reservation, you help at the fire department. I can’t wait to go back to North Carolina and spend more time with you and all the amazing people I met last summer.
The only regret I have?
Well, I took thousands and thousands of photos at camp, even a few of you, but we never had a ‘‘Selfie’’. We definitely have to take one next time. 27 Special Edition No.1

My first Night off was at camp, I stayed there and was kinda boring, but hey, there’s a first time for everything right? HANDYCRAFT
ost Of you may ask, where were you working? What was your camp area?
The first time I worked in an area was the waterfront but as a floater I was able to work in any area. Anyways, I did my best and helped in almost every camp area.
My actual favorite area and the one I was better working was at Handycraft. I’m an artist and that’s what handycraft is about. I was teaching the Photography class to the kids every week, I learned a lot and of course, they did too. Some times I helped Ashley with her Model Design and Building Class, I helped Shelby with her Leatherwork Class and In some of the classes I was with the kids making clay sculptures in the pottery class. One time I did a Snake so I could scare Ashley, she was terrified of snakes. I did a Pikachu too, but It exploded in the heater. And a Mask that broke when I fist wore it.
Also, I was the official camp photographer. The International USA representative told me that I’m the first International scout in the US to get this work. Anyways, I didn’t sell my photos or any of my designs of camp, it was not an obligation and it was a pleasure to do it for free and knowing that everybody liked the As a graphic designer, I designed a Handycraft Logo in pictures.
