2020 Sire

Catalogue There's always room for improvement

WITH NEW CHALLENGES COME NEW OPPORTUNITIES The LIC breeding program has the luxury of a vast and growing dataset, with 98% of NZ cows recorded in a central database and 80% of those cows milk recorded annually. We have invested in genomic research since 1994 and incorporated genomic selection into our breeding programme for many years. We were the first company in the world to market young bulls based on genomic breeding values, and in 2020 LIC Ireland will be looking to integrate some young sires into our herd improvement offering.

Mark Ryder Roll on 2020 and the challenges it is certain to bring. At LIC and Eurogene we are excited about building and providing solutions to address these challenges, whatever they may be. One thing we do know for sure is we need to better look after our planet and ensure the dairy industry is seen in a positive light by the growing global population. This year’s catalogue of genetic solutions is the result of significant investment in genomics and one of the world’s largest dairy progeny test schemes. They are leadingedge genetics developed by more than 100 years of improvement in the NZ national herd. Efficiency is the underlying fundamental of the national breeding objective, with liveweight, fertility and production traits used to breed a cow that will respond well to most systems. It is important to remember that genomics is not a silver bullet, it has its own set of challenges. Reliability of genomic evaluations depends on good quality data… and loads of it. This requires great recording and performance measurement on farm to correctly identify the high performing cows along with the traits that are driving the desired outputs.

2

We launched LIC’s first sexed semen into Ireland last year and promoted a cautious approach based on the results of blind trials in NZ and Ireland. Those trials showed around 13% lower conception rates compared with conventional straws which is not ideal for block calving herds as calving pattern and days in milk are critical. We published advice on ways farmers could weigh things in their favour, and we are happy to be receiving reports of acceptable results. This year you will see we have further invested in this space and have again managed to obtain sexed options for our most elite bulls, meaning there’s no tradeoff in genetic merit if you choose a sexed option for your herd. See page 9 for considerations to follow when using sexed semen. For the best outcomes, discuss strategies of how to best use it as part of a complete breeding plan with your breeding advisor. At LIC we don’t just sell genetics, we focus on well-rounded advice on systems, soils, grass and cows, and how you can turn all of this into profit. Our Pasture to Profit consultancy team are strong in the practical side of dairy farming and have your back. We understand how important the land and cows are to you.. Our job is to ensure you have a sustainable business to pass onto your next generation.

LIC’s focus is to add value to your farm by offering relevant solutions to your problems. We highlight the importance of breeding the right cow to boost profit margins but also enable resilience to handle the changing demands. And we want to ensure you’re able to maximise the growth and utilisation of your cheapest food source, your pasture. Have a good read and remember breeding is a long process, your decisions today can affect your herd for the next 25 years. However, there are ways to speed up the improvement process with the right use of technologies, measurement, good management and a quality mating plan. Talk to your breeding advisor for advice or feel free to contact me directly. Have a great 2020 focusing on the things you can control! Mark Ryder General Manager LIC Europe

UNDERSTANDING NEW ZEALAND BULL DATA Across all Breed Evaluation

Base Cow

The bull data in this catalogue is displayed across all breeds; this is in line with how New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL) and LIC rank New Zealand dairy animals.

The New Zealand Base Cow is the genetic reference point from which Breeding Worth (BW) and Breeding Values (BV) are measured for all New Zealand dairy cattle. All of the bull information in this catalogue is recorded relative to the 2005 Base Cow – the average of 21,585 cows born in the year 2005 – whose production and TOP (traits other than production) data has been set to zero. Each cow has been TOP inspected and milk recorded at least four times to deliver an accurate result.

Because many LIC customers here in Ireland and around the world select genetics from multiple breeds for optimal herd performance, it is important for farmers to understand how an animal should perform within the whole herd, not just within one breed of the herd.

Base Cow Production Production is reported on their 270-day lactation yields relative to 5T Dry Matter:

LIC believe that an across all breed evaluation is the best tool to help you make breeding choices geared toward making your herd the most profitable it can be.

Traits Other than Production Assessing the Animal Traits Other than Production (TOP) refer to the behaviour, temperament and physical attributes of a cow and are scored separately on a scale from one to nine. The four farmer-scored and 14 inspector-scored TOP traits are considered most important in relation to the overall requirements of dairy farmers. TOP records from two year-old animals are used for sire evaluations. 1

Data Processing The raw data is then sent through to the New Zealand Animal Evaluation unit where within herd, region and national comparisons are analysed and processed. This information is then fed into the national data base as breeding values for sires. The average raw TOP scores of the 2005 base cow are as follows: FARMER SCORED MANAGEMENT TRAITS

HOW TO READ A SIRE PAGE Liveweight

BW/Rel

A BV of 45 kg indicates by using this sire over the average cow in New Zealand his daughters are expected to have a mature liveweight 22 kg heavier than the base cow of 500 kg. Because Breeding Values (BV) are calculated across breed you would expect a Holstein Friesian to have a much higher (positive) BV for liveweight and you would expect Jerseys to have a lower (negative) BV.

Using this bull at a BW of 163 indicates that per 5T DM the replacements are expected to generate NZD 163 more net profit than using a sire with a BW of 0.

Daughter of CAIRO

EBI/REL FR4507 CARSONS FM 207/64% CAIRO S3F Breeding Details

Milk A BV of 645 litres indicates the bull daughters will on average produce 322 litres more than the base cow per 5T of dry matter consumed. Remember the BV is across breeds so Jersey and Crossbred animals may show a negative BV.

Protein and Milkfat A BV of 25 kg indicates that the bull will produce daughters which on average, are genetically superior to the base cow by 12.5 kg per 5T dry matter consumed.

Somatic Cell Count A useful approximation for farmers to note, is that a difference between two sires of 0.5 in breeding value equates to a difference in expected daughter performance of 37,500 bulk milk count. The lower the SCC BV the better as you want to reduce the bulk milk SCC.

112034

MGS

MACFARLANES DAUNTLESS MGGS SRB COLLINS ROYAL HUGO

A BV of 0.00 indicates that the bull will produce daughters which on average, are genetically the same as the base cow. (For example by using a bull with a shed temperament of 0.47 the raw score for his daughters on average is expected to be 6.28 + 0.23 = 6.51 from a linear score of 9).

BW/BV are calculated by NZAEL gBW/BV are calculated by LIC.

Fertility A BV of 5.4% indicates that 2.7% more daughters are expected to calve in the first 42 days of a herds calving period, compared to a bull of 0. As an industry New Zealand has a tighter calving pattern and shorter calving interval than dairy industries worldwide, with a calving interval of 369 days and 6 week calving pattern of 84%. Highly fertile cows have been necessary to achieve this. It is generally accepted that the New Zealand base cow is far more fertile than any other country's genetic base.

ONCE-A-DAY LIC’s Once-A-Day (OAD) index has been developed to help OAD farmers breed cows that persist throughout lactation and have longevity in the herd. The index has a strong correlation to Breeding Worth (BW) as well as four functional traits that are required in a desirable OAD cow: Capacity, Udder Support, Front Teat Placement and Milking Speed. The graph shows the weighting of the traits within the OAD Index, in addition to the existing eight traits of BW. Unlike BW & PW, the OAD index does not represent an economic value of the animal’s productive performance or ability to breed profitable replacements.

HIGH INPUT LIC’s High Input Index focuses on a range of traits as well as Breeding Worth (BW) to identify animals that are best suited to High Input systems. Those traits include Capacity, Udder Support, Udder Overall and Protein. The graph shows the weighting of the traits within the High Input Index, in addition to the existing eight traits of BW. The High Input index allows two animals to be compared based on their suitability to the system. Unlike BW & PW, it does not represent an economic value of the animal’s productive performance or ability to breed profitable replacements.

Q. How can we help you get more girls?

A.

There's always room for improvement

LIC SexedULTRA4M® Semen doesn’t just deliver more girls, it helps you improve genetic gains, create more income and leads to better animal welfare. It’s the most advanced sexed semen technology in the market today offering a 90% chance of producing female offspring. Which means you can get more replacement stock from your top performers – accelerating the value of your herd and opening up more possibilities for extra income from surplus calves.

LIC SEXEDULTRA 4M® BULLS

LIC offers SexedULTRA 4M® sexed semen across a selection of our top bulls. With a 90% bias to female offspring, targeted use of LIC sexed semen allows farmers to boost rates of genetic gain in their milking herd while simultaneously creating more opportunities with surplus stock. LIC recommends generating AI replacement heifers from the highest genetic merit animals while mating the lower end to other AI options, such as LIC short gestation Hereford, to maximise herd improvement and profits on farm.

Considerations for using Sexed Semen When using sexed semen it is important to keep some wider considerations in mind to optimise the final outcome on farm. A New Zealand trial showed that when frozen sexed semen was thawed at room temperature, it averaged 13% lower conception rates compared to conventional semen.

Trials in Europe and the US showed that when frozen sexed semen is thawed at 37C and inseminated 16 hours after standing heat, the difference between sexed semen and conventional semen is between 3% and 6%.* A planned approach can be implemented on farm to maximise the benefit of using sexed semen, including: • mate yearling heifers to sexed semen, as they have higher conception rates than in-milk cows. Choose bulls suitable for yearling mating and pregnancy scan early to identify those incalf to AI bulls • mate heifers 10 days ahead of the main herd • use strict cow selection criteria for sexed semen matings. For example, young, high genetic merit, healthy, early-calved and cycling cows • mate selected cows ahead of the herd’s mating start date, or move the mating start date of the herd

forward a day or two if the impact suggests it is necessary • ensure underlying herd fertility performance is at a high level before considering the use of sexed semen and that AI best practice is followed • be certain the cow is on full standing heat. If you're unsure use a conventional straw • have plenty of stock bulls on hand to cover returning cows. For example, two year old bulls should work at a ratio of 1 bull : 30 non-pregnant cows. Have two bull teams; one working, one resting. • closely follow ST Genetics handling and insemination instructions for SexedULTRA 4M® sexed semen which can be found at licnz.com/irelandsexed.cfm Contact your local LIC rep for more information. THE GENERATION GAME A BALANCING ACT

The breeder’s equation explains the drivers of genetic gain.

Rate of genetic gain = genetic variation x selection intensity x selection accuracy generation interval For good levels of genetic gain we need: sufficient genetic variation in the population to make progress for the trait; the ability to select intensely for elite animals to use as parents; ways to accurately identify those elite animals and a short a generation interval as possible. Joyce Voogt Improved milking efficiency and better on-farm profitability is the outcome of genetic gain, as each new generation is superior to the one before.

12

Some of these factors are biologically set, such as genetic variation in the population, selection intensity (via number of offspring per female/year) and the generation interval if relying on natural processes.

Other factors such as selection intensity (via number of candidates screened) and selection accuracy may face constraints due to cost, availability of information or computer power for analysis. Technological and scientific advances have opened up new opportunities for the dairy sector to accelerate genetic gain. Genomic science, reproductive technologies and computational power now allow by advances in selection accuracy, selection intensity and shorter generation intervals. Genomic selection has seen rapid gains in additive genetic merit realised around the world, with the rapid adoption of the technology in the marketplace. Trade-offs exist, including reduced accuracy of selection compared to daughter proven bulls, increased rates of inbreeding and reduced opportunity to detect previously unknown genetic defects before the wider population is exposed.

LIC has been involved in genomic research since the 1994 and has incorporated genomic selection into its breeding programme for many years. In 2008 it was the first company in the world to commercially market young bulls based on genomic breeding values. Good gains have been made incorporating genomics into LIC’s breeding programme when selecting larger groups such as sire proving cohorts. Genomics lifts the reliability of estimated breeding values above that of ancestry information alone. While team reliabilities are high with genomic selection, re-ranking risk exists at an individual bull level. Accuracy of genomic predictions is a continued area of focus for LIC scientists, as they seek to accurately ‘identify the winners’ within cohorts. Releasing the accuracy handbrake The rate of genomic implementation and improvement in New Zealand has been slowed by its inability to utilise other countries’ data sets, mostly because of New Zealand’s:

(i) Unique grass-based, seasonal farming systems, and (ii) Need to run across-breed evaluations. These challenges call for innovation through advances in the use of data. LIC has collected production information on NZ dairy cows for the last 30 to 40 years. The database contains around a billion pieces of cow data. Computing advances have allowed LIC scientists to explore new ways of doing things, including the development of a ‘single-step animal evaluation model’. The model evaluates all information simultaneously, calculates breeding values for all animals in the population in a single-step and reduces the risk of distorted results that can influence accuracy of prediction. And it’s paying off - validation of four year cohorts of LIC’s Sire Proving Scheme animals, whose daughters have milk recording data, shows use of the new Single Step Animal Model has resulted in a massive 8% increase in genomic prediction accuracy,

comparing genomic predictions to actual daughter proofs. LIC’s large progeny test scheme allows early evaluation of genomically selected sires, increased reliabilities of predictions and reduced re-ranking risk with these sires. This range of options provides our customers with more choice. Marketing a mix of genomic and progeny tested bulls, we now see many New Zealand farmers using a combination of the daughter proven and elite genomic sires to find a happy medium in terms of risk and reward. Tips for using Genomic and Daughter Proven Sires When using genomic sires as part of your breeding programme some key principles apply.

Don’t put all your eggs in the one basket

Spread the risk. If using solely genomic sires, we expect 4 genomic bulls at reliability 60% to give a team reliability of 90%, comparable to one 90% reliable daughter proven bull. With genomics, you should keep replacements from a wider range of bulls. In Ireland ‘at least 4 bulls’ is the recommended genomic team size. Another approach to reduce re-ranking risk is the use of a combination of daughter proven and genomic sires. For example, 2 genomic sires and 4 daughter proven. You’ll need to consider your herd size, desired bull team size and appetite for risk.

Raise the bar on the young fellas

As the risk of re-ranking is higher with genomic sires, a good policy is to raise the bar on key traits. You want to make sure that you protect yourself from downward movement, especially on the traits of interest, so increasing the threshold can help do that.

Don’t let your breeding programme be the next Bitcoin

Remember the old saying - if it looks too good to be true then it possibly is. Sires with breeding values that look too good to be true should be used with caution, moderation and as a team. It is tempting to chase the latest high-flying bull but stick to your plan; use a team of bulls with the criteria you want to follow.

You do the maths

The sire selection is only one part of genetic gain equation. You may be using the latest and greatest sires but you also need to do the other basics well for a firm foundation. Areas such as improving herd reproductive performance, mating yearlings, milk recording, keeping good herd records and identifying your best and worst cows for different breeding options can all help improve herd quality and rates of genetic gain.

LIFETIME PERFORMANCE IS KEY

Ron Pellow has successfully led Lincoln University Farm through a massive system change.

Look at lifetime performance as a key production indicator when looking to tighten farm performance and improve productivity. That’s the view of Ron Pellow, national manager, farms for AgResearch in New Zealand, who has been in the UK and Ireland talking to dairy farmers about turning grass into milk… not maintenance.

“It’s important to graze at the 3-leaf stage instead of the 2.5 leaf stage, this leads to more grass and the use of less fertiliser,” he says. “Reducing stocking rates can free up 600kg/ha for producing more milk, and it’s vital to allocate more grass to production, rather than maintenance.

“Lifetime performance isn’t a common reference to use, but it should be,” he says. “Remember we feed an animal for two years before we get any return, so how many lactations she stays in the herd, and how much production we get in her lifetime, are crucial profit indicators.”

Looking at pasture management, he believes we are at a point in time when farmers need to look at the grass varieties grown, and question whether these are the best combinations for current feed requirements.

He also lists the quality of the animal, improved by using the right genetics for the farm system as being key, along with matching the grass growth curve to feed demand.

14

He gives an example of 4.2 cows producing 1,673kg/MS/ha while reducing numbers to 3.5 cows will result in an increase to 1,730kg/MS/ha.

“Diploid perennial ryegrasses have served farmers well, but tetraploids and some of the more winter active grasses have a much better fit with feed demand for grazing dairy cows, It’s not just about dry matter yield, it’s about quality,

harvestability, seasonal growth and matching that with feed demand.” Explaining how Lincoln University Dairy Farm has gone through substantive change in the past few years, much aimed at meeting the environmental signals coming from local bodies, Government and organisations, he highlighted a reduction in fertiliser usage as one of the key drivers. “Cumulatively dairy farms were linked to much of the nitratenitrogen load from farmland entering our lowland rivers and streams and hence segments of the community targeted dairy farmers to reduce catchment nutrient loads.” He explained that nitrogen was needed to grow grass in early spring, but that the amount didn’t need to be as high as 40kgs/ha. Lincoln decided to only spread 25kg/ha and extended the grazing round by three days to suit the 3-leaf stage, meaning less grazing and less fertiliser rounds.

LUDF has already met their 2022 target to reduce their leached nitrate by 30%.

“We challenged ourselves to scale up some emerging research that challenged many of our previous assumptions. Early on in the process we saw, with hindsight, that we’d been wasteful with our nitrogen applications, and with our pasture feed supply. We were using pasture for maintenance that could be used for milk production.” The Lincoln model suggested that approximately 60kgs/ha of nitrate was being leached, and they were challenged to reduce this by 30% by 2022. They actively sought to meet this target, and are already there, remaining in profit throughout the change. “We dropped our stocking rates so dropped our feed requirement for maintenance. We also lowered our nitrogen fertiliser usage and restricted the amount of imported feed per cow. In reality, we better matched feed supply to demand. “I’m sure there are more gains to come, and we need research to help identify how to produce

more milk from grazed forage with fewer cows. Voluntary intake of pasture, for example, is currently one of the limitations, so we need to understand how to overcome this and seek ways we can continually increase intake from grazed forages.” One of his mantras is to turn sunshine into food – something he says is good for farmers and consumers, and that the opportunity to get a good grazing animal to maximise the use of pasture is the route forwards. Moving ahead he suggests farmers look at their farm with a ‘new’ set of eyes, imagining they are just starting in dairying without any background or history, and question just why they are operating the way that they are.

may mean radically changing what we are growing and how fast new pastures are being replaced. “Milk production at LUDF over the past five years has benefited tremendously from 15% annual reseeding that introduced tetrapolois across most of the pastures.” His advice for farmers: • Know your purpose; • Know your strengths, the competitive environment and your advantages; • Beware of bias; • Benchmark and identify opportunities; • Be positive and agile in decision making; • Focus on what you can change.

For example, he explains that while plant breeders are doing great work, if the industry is not prepared to utilise the best varieties, they are not taking advantages of new opportunities. In some cases, this

BEEF OPTIONS LIC Ireland offers beef semen to farmers to provide them with more opportunities to enhance their farm business. It’s a simple formula; the best cows are used to breed the next generation of replacement heifers, while the lowerend cows provide dairy beef calves. Genetic gain in the herd is accelerated and at the same time extra revenue is generated through dairy beef opportunities.

Short Gestation Length (SGL) Hereford SGL Hereford is a premium short gestation beef product, offering farmers the ability to achieve more days in milk while producing a dairy beef calf that is easily identifiable among AI dairy replacements. SGL Hereford semen is supplied through an exclusive agreement between LIC and Shrimpton’s Hill Herefords breeders, John and Liz McKerchar. Shrimpton’s Hill’s short gestation programme was established in 2001; today they are the breeders of the leading Herefords in Australasia for short gestation length and have just sold their one millionth semen straw. Building on the Shrimpton’s Hill Hereford Stud established by John’s father in 1969, the McKerchar’s pride themselves in providing dairy farmers worldwide with Herefords specifically bred for short gestation length and calving ease.

Wagyu Wagyu is a beef breed that originated in Japan. It is often considered as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of beef for its high level of fat marbling that makes it extremely tender, juicy and delicious. For the first time LIC Ireland is offering Wagyu beef semen to use over dairy animals. Farmers can add value to nonreplacement calves by producing dairy beef calves that can be sold and raised for beef. Talk to your LIC rep about how you can incorporate beef into your mating plan to increase your herds potential.

QUANTIFYING THE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY OF LIC’S BREEDING PROGRAMME Tony Fransen LIC employed Tony Fransen as environment and welfare manager in January 2019. Tony’s career to date includes: • farm management up to 900 cows on a Waikato split calving farm; • environmental advice for farmers regarding effluent system design, nitrogen regulations, farm environment plans, and good environmental farming practices; and; • studying AgriScience at Massey University. One of Tony’s first tasks at LIC has been to calculate the environmental gains LIC has made through their Premier Sires breeding programme, and how this correlates to BW.

LIC has bred environmentally efficient dairy animals for some time, and here we reflect on recent data that illustrates just how far LIC’s Premier Sires teams have come since 1989. Nitrogen loss associated with cow urine patches and methane emissions from cow burps are demanding more attention due to their environmental effects, media interest, and regulatory change. LIC has always focused on breeding and selecting for cows which efficiently convert the food they eat into milk production, while maintaining important attributes needed to maximise the productive life of the cow. Since its inception in 1996, breeding worth (BW) has been, and still is, a great indicator of environmental efficiency. It’s a strong assumption then, that when it comes to improving both nitrogen and methane efficiency of cows, a key driver would be the animal’s ability to maximise production output per kilogram of feed eaten.

48

Until now, however, the relationship between good genetic merit animals and nitrogen output and efficiency was yet to be formally quantified by LIC. The calculations described in this article were done with three steps: first looking at a wider breeding bull population, then the Premier Sires bull teams, and finally validating the findings with cow data. The first step was to use the NZAEL database of breeding bulls across all dairy breeds. The analysis indicates that BW shows a good relationship with how much urinary nitrogen is produced by an animal per kilogram of milksolid produced. For every $10BW increase, there was 1.0g less urinary nitrogen produced per kilogram milksolid. These results align with the DairyNZ research , with high BW and low BW cows in metabolic stalls comparing intake, output, and partitioning.

High BW cows showed greater nitrogen efficiency, higher levels of nitrogen being in milk protein and lower amounts of nitrogen in urine. The second stage was to see how the LIC Daughter Proven Premier Sires team (including Friesian, Jersey and Kiwicross) has improved over time. Using the weighted average from the number of straws sold each year, the adjacent graph shows how the urinary nitrogen calculated per kilogram of milksolid has progressively decreased by 0.22% per year (7% over 30 years) as LIC has pushed for greater animal efficiency. LIC has made these improvements in environmental efficiency through BW being a sound measure of overall efficiency of a dairy animal. This has enabled the breeding programme to select the best allround genetics which has resulted in consistent genetic gain.

According to Premier Sires bull data, urinary nitrogen per kg of milksolids has declined by 7% over 30 years

So when making decisions on a breeding programme, remember that BW is a key measure of the overall efficiency of the animal, including environmental efficiency.

What is the NZAEL Bull File? This is the list of sires enrolled with NZAEL, the dataset on 14 August 2019 included 25,571 bulls. This includes bulls of any dairy breed and includes the majority of bulls registered for use through breeding companies. Many young bulls are enrolled when they enter sire proving schemes. Some of these bulls were born as far back as 1940, this is why there is a large BW range. 1 Woodward S.L., Waghorn G.C., Bryant M.A., and Mandok K., (2011) Are high breeding worth index cows more feed conversion efficient and nitrogen use efficient?, DairyNZ, Proceedings of the New Zealand Society of Animal Production 2011. FERTILITY AND FARM MANAGEMENT GO HAND-IN-HAND FOR FARMER JAMIE COSTIN

Jamie wants to increase his herd's six week calving rate to 90%.

Herd improvement is at the front of Jamie Costin’s mind when he looks at his breeding policy. Farming in Dungarvan, Co.Waterford, he looks for cows that efficiently convert feed to profit, stay healthy, remain in the herd for a long time, and produce daughters of even better generic merit. “I want to leave a legacy of strong cow families in the herd. I’ve seen that the cows need to calve consistently within the first six weeks of calving and getting as many in calf in that period is key to my operation here,” he says. When your herd is seen as the engine of your farm business, measuring milk production would be the equivalent of measuring speed, breeding Worth (BW) would be your engine’s horsepower and the six-week in-calf rate your rev counter – showing how efficiently your engine is running. As with any engine or system, small changes can have dramatic effects,

50

so it’s vital you put your efforts into the right areas at the right time. Whether you are capturing more days in milk, more replacement calves, or improved herd quality through more culling options and more choice, lifting this in-calf rate will help to achieve business goals. Jamie’s six-week rate is 86% and, ideally, he wants to top 90%. At the same time, 96% of his heifers calved within 22 to 26 months, and he got 80% of his heifers in-calf to their first insemination, despite trying weather conditions. He recognises that there are eight key areas of impact on fertility and that they are all related to farm management. These are calving patterns, heifer management, nutrition and body condition, heat detection, service bulls, AB practices and genetics, non-cycler issues and cow health. Jamie milks 360 cows on his 130ha grazing platform at Cosfeirm Teoranta and has been expanding the herd rapidly since moving over to LIC genetics in 2012.

He’s invested in the animals first and is now busy supporting the herd with capital investment, remaining confident in the future of dairying in Ireland. The main bulls he used when he started his crossbreeding programme included Moodys Executive (YMD), Solaris (PSQ), Sierra (ZSP) and Integrity (OKT). YMD was chosen to bring high kilos of milk solids, excellent fertility and health benefits such as low SCCs. He also offered good udders and capacity. PSQ is an all-round excellent bull, with great fat and protein percentages of 4.9% and 4.0%, while also having excellent BCS and offering an SCC reduction. Solaris also has excellent capacity and fertility, allowing for efficient production of grass into milk solids. He has 60,000 daughters on the ground worldwide, with some 2500 in Ireland. OKT is a pure Jersey bull with

Jamie has sought to increase his knowledge and has been rewarded with increased yield. excellent fat and protein components of 5.9% fat and 4.3% protein. His BCS and capacity are excellent. “These were some of my foundation bulls which have allowed me to breed capacious, fertile, low SCC and high fat and protein percentage cows,” he said. For 2019 he has chosen Sierra, Beaut, Epic, Spot-on, Misty and Dexter. All these bulls follow a similar trend – high fertility, high milk solids and fats and proteins, excellent capacity with good BCS and udders. “I strongly believe that fertility and farm management go handin-hand and by concentrating on them both and having a positive herd improvement programme that I stick to, I will run a profitable dairy farm,” says Jamie. His approach to early spring is to look for early grazing with a ‘flexible’ mindset, so yes, the cows may come back indoors for a while if the weather turns. But flexibility remains key, as he plays by the weather to manage swards.

“You must respect the land and understand you depend on it. We have a spring rotation planner and we try to stick closely to the target. We will normally aim to finish our first rotation by the first week of April. “Then, from the start of May, we will rotate every 21 days through to the end of August. Our aim is to maximise the utilisation of every blade of grass that we grow, and we have to fit the size of the herd to the forage available. “Stocking rate is something we look at very carefully. We don’t believe we should go above 2.5 cows/ha. One of the hardest decisions is how many cows you can run. In 2019 we were between 2.1 and 2.2 cows/ha and that worked out well.” Jamie walks and measures his grass every two weeks in February and March and agrees that the earlier you get out and measure what you have, the better you can graze the farm. From April he walks every three or four days and admits he is often surprised by what he finds.

“As we’ve improved our knowledge, we’ve increased our yield. In 2009 we were getting between seven and eight tonnes of dry matter a hectare – now we are closer to 13 to 15 tonnes. Obviously yield is very closely linked to stocking rate, so this is why we feel that 2.5cows/ ha is about right for us.” He aims for opening covers of around 1,000 but says what’s important is to calculate what the right intake is for the cows. He believes this to be around 160-180kg/DM per animal, and often when the grass is growing at peak times we will take a cut of silage when he feels there’s extra fodder available. “These figures are easy to achieve when you manage your grass properly. I look at the weather forecast and plan. It’s certainly becoming a lot more scientific, but once you get into a system it becomes intuitive. “My message here would be don’t waste grass – learn what you have, manage it properly and maximise its utilisation.”
