MANCHESTER COLLECTIVE ECSTATIC DANCES
SIR RANULPH FIENNES LIVING DANGEROUSLY
Paul Clark composer Poul Høxbro pipes and drums Manchester Collective string quintet Ecstatic Dances created by Poul Høxbro and Manchester Collective Poul Høxbro has been called “the great man of small instruments”. He’s an endlessly fascinating and inspiring musician – a Danish master of ancient flutes and bells, of bones and drums. This combination of instruments has literally never been heard before. Quite simply ancient music, brought vividly to life for 21stcentury ears. Rounding out the artistic team for the project is composer Paul Clark, who makes his Manchester Collective debut fresh off the back of a hugely successful collaboration with Renée Fleming and Ben Whishaw at The Shed in New York. A note from the Collective: “Ecstatic Dances feels scary for us. New work is always frightening, mostly because until you start making it, you never really know what you're going to end up with. Fortunately, we're not particularly fond of being comfortable.” TICKETS: £20.67 Over 60s: £1.50 off Under 18s/students/unwaged: 50% off
Named by the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has spent his life in pursuit of extreme adventure, risking life and limb in some of the most ambitious private expeditions ever undertaken. Both light-hearted and strikingly poignant, Living Dangerously offers a personal journey through his life, spanning early childhood and school misdemeanours, right through the Transglobe Expedition and his many recordbreaking achievements; inspiring generations and making him a pioneer of exploration with an unparalleled story to tell. Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 3 Pärt Fratres Shostakovich Chamber Symphony Bach Concerto for Two Violins Pärt Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 5 The Britten Sinfonia presents a programme of contrasting, yet perfectly matched, works of music old and new. This concert pays homage to Baroque composer JS Bach, master of writing for many parts as demonstrated in his Concerto for Two Violins, where he delicately weaves two solo parts in and out of the orchestra, always intertwined but never tangled.
Rossini Overture: William Tell Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Schubert Songs with orchestra: arr Jackson – Die Forelle arr Webern – Du bist die Ruh arr Brahms – Geheimes arr Reger – Am Tage aller Seelen arr Liszt – Erlkönig
Beethoven Symphony No 6 (Pastoral) Rossini’s William Tell overture is known throughout the world, you might recognise it as the theme tune to the 1950s TV show The Lone Ranger.
Estonian composer Arvo Pärt leads a spiritual life, as did Bach. Though their music is very different, and composed two centuries apart, it is linked through their shared faith and religious inspiration. Pärt’s meditative Fratres has found its way on to many soundtracks, most notably in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2007 epic film There Will Be Blood.
On the day Britain entered WWI, Vaughan Williams was mistaken for a spy strolling along Margate coast. When he was arrested, his alleged enemy notes turned out to be sketches for The Lark Ascending!
Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, originally a string quartet of epic proportions, doubles in catastrophic intensity in this chamber orchestra sized arrangement.
Despite his tragically short life Schubert still became master of the art of song. These five songs are each beautiful notes on life, love, longing and loss.

MELODY OF SPRING CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION 2020
Ravel Ma mère l’Oye Debussy Ibéria Beethoven Piano Concerto No 4 Ravel La Valse
Presented by Leeds Chinese Community School and Guangzhou No 6 Middle School from China
Ravel’s enchanting Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) quotes magical fairytales and nursery rhymes, while Debussy’s Ibéria is a three-movement whirlwind trip through partying Spanish streets.
A Chinese youth music group joins Leeds artists to showcase a wide variety of performances including a traditional orchestra of 100 talented young musicians from China.
Beethoven starred as soloist in the premiere of his fourth piano concerto in 1808. The concerto is a sunny one with between-the-lines melancholy, but closes with a fiery finale.
The fascinating sounds and shapes of traditional instruments, authentic Chinese music, song, dance and culture provide a celebration of the diversity of Chinese and Western music.
Ravel’s post-war piece La Valse comments on the then Europe by introducing, decaying, and essentially destroying the musical form of a waltz. Dark satire at its most musical. TICKETS: A £39.22, B £37.10, C £32.86, D £25.44, E £19.08, O £14.84 Over 60s: £1.50 off Under 18s/students/unwaged: 50% off

Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture: Romeo and Juliet Edward Gregson Oboe Concerto (world premiere) Berlioz Symphonie fantastique Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet overture is a twenty-minute whistle-stop tour through the most famous love story ever written. Out of the tempestuous fighting passages emerges the utterly wondrous love theme. British composer Edward Gregson’s new oboe concerto A Vision in a Dream, is based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem of the same name, written in 1797. The poem came to Coleridge in an opium-induced dream, and describes the paradise gardens of Xanadu. Across the Channel, Berlioz wrote his Symphonie fantastique inspired by a tragically unrequited infatuation with the beautiful actress Harriet Smithson. The symphony comes with a narrative from Berlioz’s also opium-induced dreams; of a festive ball, hazy countryside frolicking – and of the resentful composer’s own execution for Harriet’s murder. Bizet Selections from L’Arlésienne Suites No 1 & No 2 Ravel Concerto for the Left Hand Anna Thorvaldsdottir Aeriality Prokofiev Selections from Romeo and Juliet Bizet’s L’Arlessienne (the lady from Arle) suites were originally incidental music to a play about one man’s struggle with his desire for two women. Ravel composed his Concerto for the Left Hand for pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who’d lost his right arm in WWI. The result is a dark work mixed with jazzy rhythms, arguably one of the most challenging piano works ever written.

MANCHESTER COLLECTIVE CRIES & WHISPERS Manchester Collective string quartet Widmann String Quartet No 2 (Choralequartett) Britten String Quartet No 1 Gesualdo Selected Madrigals Shostakovich String Quartet No 8 Manchester Collective’s string quartet concerts are some of our most personal shows – like there’s a direct connection between each of the four players, and every listener in the room. Widmann’s Chorale Quartet, inspired by the seven last words of Christ on the cross, is augmented by unsettling sounds of rubbing and scratching that evoke skin and bone on wood. Britten’s music emerges from a mist: fragile, lost, and precious. The Collective performs some intensely expressive and sacred music by Carlo Gesualdo, an Italian musical genius hundreds of years ahead of his time. The concert concludes with the huge emotional impact of Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet, a biographical scream written by a man desperate to create, haunted by fear and political oppression. This music will move you if you let it – it will scare you and inspire you. TICKETS: £20.67 Over 60s: £1.50 off Under 18s/students/unwaged: 50% off

This programme is the perfect showcase for the orchestra’s wonderful talents. CLYO’s British orchestral heritage is on show in the first half with Elgar’s depiction of London town, a work he dedicated to “My many friends, the members of British orchestras”. Then Elgar’s most famous piece of music – Nimrod from his Enigma Variations set to words of the requiem mass in a moving eight part unaccompanied choral arrangement. CLYO sings! Shostakovich’s seventh symphony remains a uniquely resonant revelation in 20th-century history. Written during the siege of Leningrad in the Second World War and dedicated to the people of that city, it remains one of the most powerful of all symphonic works. The orchestra welcomes back CLYO alumni to take what is already set to be a moving and powerful concert to the next level.

Vocalise, originally written for soprano, and here performed as an orchestral arrangement has been rearranged and performed by many, including the Pet Shop Boys in their song Happiness is an Option. The witch’s companions ultimately save her from a fearsome dragon, and in gratitude, she rewards them with a magnificent new broom, which has room for everyone. And the magic doesn’t stop there. The Highway Rat tells the tale of a ravenous rat who craves buns, biscuits and all sweet things. Tearing along the highway, he searches for sugary treats to steal, until his sweet tooth leads him to a sticky end... Illustration © Orange Eyes Limited 2012

MANCHESTER COLLECTIVE VOICE OF THE WHALE Alex Groves composer Manchester Collective ensemble Joyce High and Low Groves New Work (world premiere) Korngold Piano Trio: iii & iv Hamilton In Beautiful May Crumb Vox Balanae In 1969, George Crumb heard a tape recording of undersea sounds emitted by a humpback whale. The experience never left him, and eventually inspired one of his most enigmatic pieces of music: Vox Balanae, or, Voice of the Whale. Performed under blue light by anonymous, masked musicians, on instruments that are amplified and modified, it’s music from another world, an undersea world that audiences will experience on stage, together with the Collective. Alongside Vox Balanae, hear newly commissioned music by Alex Groves, Molly Joyce’s exuberant High and Low for solo piano, electro-acoustic madness from Andrew Hamilton, and selections from Erich Korngold’s swashbuckling piano trio. Beethoven Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Mozart Symphony No 41 (Jupiter) Beethoven Mass in C Goethe’s poems Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage inspired Beethoven to compose his small but mighty piece, with full choral forces lamenting ships stranded in calm seas before winds rise to carry them on their way. Mozart’s Symphony No 41 was his last and perhaps most exciting symphony, nicknamed Jupiter due to its march-like imperial nature. All in all a dazzling culmination of his symphonic career. Beethoven’s Mass in C, completed and premiered in 1807, is a perfect illustration of his genius and is widely loved and performed the world over. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet... a duel with knight, Sir Gadabout the Great! The smash-hit stage adaptation from Freckle Productions (the team behind Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and Tabby McTat) is back in 2020 and promises to be bigger, brighter and more roar-some than ever before! ST PETERSBURG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Nikolai Alexeev conductor Noriko Ogawa piano
Prokofiev Suite: Cinderella Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 1 Tchaikovsky Symphony No 5 Prokofiev’s popular ballet score for Cinderella is notable for its jubilant music and comic characterisations of the ungraceful ugly sisters. Rachmaninov was just seventeen when he began work on his first piano concerto. This astonishing first attempt is a playful work that displays glimpses of his almighty second piano concerto that followed ten years later. Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony has a recurring ‘fate motif’ throughout, and whilst often huge in scale, it lends a sombre nature that even Tchaikovsky himself couldn’t escape. The last movement however, is a triumphant return to a brighter mood, and a suitably spectacular ending. OPERA NORTH
The breathtaking, emotionally-charged soundworld of one of today’s most remarkable artists meets the intensely expressionistic universe of a landmark of early cinema. Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, composer and producer Julia Holter performs her new soundtrack for the revelatory 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, scored for the mighty 36-strong Chorus of Opera North, plus her own band. Commissioned by Opera North Projects to score Carl Theodor Dreyer’s visionary film about the martyrdom of the French saint, she finds herself with an immense sonic tapestry at her fingertips, and an opportunity to dig deeper into her fascination with the music and art of the medieval era. Manchester Collective string octet Bach Cello Suite No 1 in G Major Panufnik Modlitwa Tenney Koan Tavener The Lamb Enescu String Octet in C Major, Op 7
Quite simply, Manchester Collective has put a bunch of its favourite music into this show. Rather than sticking to a single theme or composer, in this programme, they get the chance to show off their musical range – to flex muscles and get up close and personal with some of the greatest music ever written. This show takes you from focussed and intense works for just one instrument (Bach’s G Major Cello Suite), to the huge combined string sound of Enescu’s String Octet; from the shape-shifting Koan by James Tenney to the haunting Modlitwa, a musical prayer by father-daughter compositional team, Andrzej and Roxanna Panufnik. For the last time this season, Manchester Collective will be touring its trademark “radical human experience through live music” to concert halls, warehouses, clubs, and factories all over the UK. In the words of Stephen Pritchard, music critic for the Observer: “Catch it if you can – the future has arrived.” TICKETS: £20.67 Over 60s: £1.50 off Under 18s/students/unwaged: 50% off
